I’m guessing “The Champion” is going to chart on Hot Country Songs? Right now Bebe Rexha feat. FGL is no. 1 on that chart so the standard for “country” is not exactly set very high. Although for Grammy submission it would probably be in the pop collaboration category.

Wow! For how many years Arista couldn't get her to #1 on iTunes or land a promo deal like this? UMG did it at first attempt... LOL
Giddy with excitement for her upcoming album!! I need a proper headlining tour in Australia this time!

For what its worth I hope UMG is paying attention and release her lead single right after SB. Hopefully this single doesn't fizzle out like "Dear Hate"

I need a proper headlining tour in Australia this time! I really think that the promo UMG has been doing (so far for this song) is not any bigger or superior than Arista ever did for Carrie. The song shot to number one because of Carrie. People have been missing her music. And the 'Pop' label really helped the non hard core fans to buy the song. Storyteller singles didnt do as big as Blown Away era because Carrie and her team always labelled them as twangy and that didnt work out for non hard core fans. Thats all My opinion. Dont attack me. Lol Thats been said. I really cannot wait for the video , the new album, the tour. 2018 is going to be Carrie's year

I was not expecting to like this.... and I actually LOVE it. This is such a jam and such a great song to run/workout to.

But I always was under the impression she didn't want to go Pop at all... meaning, not only did she not want to release a straight up Pop song, but she didn't even want to do a remix of any of her country songs. I just think of so many hits she could have had...

^True, but this is kind of a one off. I'm sure she won't be going pop with the new album. She will pop elements of course, but I guess we shall see.

I actually really like The Champion but I can see why people wouldn't care for it. It's different for her.

Carrie has never had anything against making Pop music. She's just not a fan of those cheap remixes that country acts make to garner Pop airplay. There's a big difference there.
Anyway, I wonder if they'll consider retiring "Oh Sunday Night" next football season? If "The Champion" really takes off, I think it would be a wise decision for NBC to make it the official theme for all things Sunday Night Football.

I think we will be getting an official lead single after the end of the Winter Olympics. They won't be promoting The Champion much after that, and people will have her in their minds after hearing it so much.

But Blown Away had pop-rock (Fleetwood Macish) elements and didn't really need a remix, just like BHC didn't (although it's true someone created an unofficial pop remix...) Cadillacs and See you again were more country but also with pop sensibilities. And The Fighter even more. I'm sure that if a pop push had been made, any of these songs could've had a chance at pop. I like this one but yeah she sounds a bit more nasal and with some vocal effects. Also interesting that the song could fit into the Reputation album lol

I'll have to take a deep dive into Dudley's posting history to find the exact quotes, but I can assure you that she has never had a problem with her music being defined as Pop or being associated with Pop radio. Her anti-remix stance is because she believes that if a track is meant to crossover, then it should do so in its original state; she's not interested in altering songs to cater to specific audiences. She also always acknowledges when her material is more pop-leaning. In an interview during the Blown Away era, she said herself that the title track didn't feature much standard country instrumentation.

It's incredibly important for folks to remember that the contract she had at Sony/Arista Nashville was adjusted after 2 major events post-Some Hearts: Cindy Mabe left (and is now back with Carrie at UMG/Capitol), and Carrie's deal with Arista New York finished and wasn't renewed, for reasons that none of us know for certain. But, Arista NY was a huge player in "Before He Cheats" crossing over to CHR/Pop, and Cindy Mabe was a huge player in launching Carrie's career in such a massive way. After Some Hearts, she never partnered with Arista NY again (hence why there was never a major Pop push for any of her following singles), and in the middle of Play On, labelhead switches (Galante to Overton, and then later Overton to Goodman) really threw a few wrenches into the process and order of how things rolled at her label home.
She has never, ever strictly stated she's against Pop. As Typo mentioned, she's gone on the record in the past (more than once) and noted that she's not a fan of cheap Pop remixes of songs. Even while she was at Sony/Arista, they listed several singles of hers (including "Blown Away" and "See You Again") under CHR/Pop Cool New Music, and gave them adds dates. They just never pushed them, which is why they did literally nothing on the Pop charts.

As cliched sports anthems go this one isn't half bad. I mean, yeah, it's trope-y af but at least it's undeniably catchy and it'll be a great addition to my work out playlist. It might even make me feel like doing extra burpees. No doubt the compression is laid on thick but I don't know, it kinda works, or maybe it's just grown on me. Dunno. And at least the vocals are brought to the forefront instead of buried under an avalanche of processed instruments. So there's that to be grateful for. Whatever, Carrie's vocals are fire and I'm always happy when she gets a win -- which an iTunes number one always is. Has everyone seen Saving Country Music's take on this? Trigger's busy clutching his pearls that The Champion will be released to country radio as an official single. My dude needs a Xanax. Song Review, The Champion
This is a funny one from CBS Sports. Carrie Underwood, Ludacris Drop Super Bowl Anthem

My question to Typo was the statement that Carrie has no problem making pop music. I had never read that (and still can't find a statement from Carrie on it) so I was confused if it was a fact or just an educated guess.

Will they send the song to Pop? There have been a few instances where I feel they were very dumb to not send her singles there (Cowboy Casanova!), but this new label might change things up.

They have every right to critique any song they want but why is Saving Country Music doing their thing on The Champion. It’s obviously not country. It’s a pop song written for the Super Bowl and by extension the Winter Olympics. But, whatever. It is at number on ITunes all genre chart so it’s doing it’s job.

I love that Carrie is not pure country.
