Remember when I said that bodak yellow could be the song to dethrone despacito a month ago and everyone called me crazy? Well... and you still are. Who said it's dethroned or will dethrone Despacito already? I'm not surprised it's in the top 10 considering it's a streaming monster, but it's getting top 5 at most. I don't see it challenging Despacito for #1 at all. This will not be another Panda/Black Beatles/Bad and Boujee-type situation.

I think a lot of people forget that One Sweet Day got the benefit of the slow chart over the holiday season when nothing really shakes up. 16 weeks is 16 weeks without a doubt, but I'd argue that summer weeks are more impressive due to over-exposure. It was first released during the holiday season, though, so that isn't where it was helped to 16 weeks. People also don't think about the fact that at that time, not all radio formats counted toward the Hot 100 like they did today. It's at least possible "One Sweet Day" could have held on longer if its R&B airplay was included, no?

One Sweet Day fell to #5 on the Hot 100, and descended 4-8 on the sales chart that week. On airplay, it fell 2-3, but even if additional formats were counted, it likely wouldn't have made up for the sales deficit.

It could be a combination of a couple factors. Songs already available that are released as singles months after their parent album is released aren't auto-hits the way they used to be because of sales and streaming. Radio may still jump on board these songs and push them to respectable peaks but when streaming and sales don't support them in the same way they did first singles, there's only so far they can go. It's almost as if having an album works against earning additional hit singles from said album. I think with Adele, everyone bought the album early, because it wasn't streaming. So she got low numbers for both streaming and sales for all the singles after Hello, with fairly strong AirPlay. Didn't the album sell 10 million copies like really quickly?

It sold 20 million worldwide in 2015, which is unreal because it was released in late November.

The poster was saying its release time helped it, and I was pointing out there are a lot of things that go into a song's chart run. At the end of the day, its run was its run. Under 00s chart rules the song also would have debuted sooner than it did since it was already #2 in airplay when it was released commercially. Out of that it would have had more top 10 weeks and more weeks overall and thus would rank higher on the all-time charts.

It seems like people are just throwing out s**t about a bunch of random artists releasing singles now. Can we provide direct source links for all these claims please? Alright, I stand corrected about Miley and Justin. One simple word though for why Justin might tank: Overexposure I thought that would affect Cold Water after Company's weak performance but.. :/ Also, I don't like Slow Hands but I would like to see it go top ten as it will be the first solo Irish artist to go top 10 since Hozier :)

It's almost as if having an album works against earning additional hit singles from said album. Yeah, songs like Castle on the Hill and, to a lesser degree, Versace on the Floor got a lot of attention before they were actually released as US singles. By the time they were promoted to radio they had already sold a lot and gotten a lot of streams. I don't think the Chainsmokers, for example, would have gotten the same amount of hits if all of them were released on a single album at the time Roses or DLMD became hits. There are other cases like When We Were Young and Unconditionally where I could argue that they just picked the wrong single. Both of those albums had better, more radio-friendly choices (and that's probably a fact considering the following singles became #1 hits on Pop and top 10s on the Hot 100). You could say stuff like those two, or Rihanna's You Da One, or even Bruno's Gorilla, would have actually done worse had they not been following huge hits. I don't recall heavydirtysoul getting much of a push, not even an adds date for radio, so I wouldn't put it in the same category as the others. Love on the Brain was getting attention since the album's release and many had already purchased or streamed the song, and yet it managed to peak inside the top 10 when it was actually released as a single (maybe it could've peaked higher had it been the follow-up to Work, we'll never know) But it shows that big acts can still get a third or fourth single to be a hit, even months after the album's been out.

Question:
how the hell is Sorry Not Sorry still #30 (assuming those final predictions were correct)? She has been in the top 20 of the US iTunes ever since its release (was outside for maybe one day), it has been inside the top 30 of pop radio for weeks, this week it was #21 on top 40 radio and been inside the top 30 there for weeks also, currently sitting steadily at #20, still rising, and has been in the top 15 of the US Spotify since it's release (discluding the first couple of days). Also it has a nice amount of US views from Youtube.
She is in the top 20 of the charts of almost all mainstream streaming/airplay/sales charts, yet SNS is still #30.
This makes zero sense to me. Can someone explain to me what other factors are affecting this?

Can someone explain to me what other factors are affecting this? You aren't looking at the broad picture. "SNS" might be top 30 at pop radio, but it isn't even top 60 in overall radio. There are more formats than just Top 40. Airplay is what is really holding it back on the Hot 100. Along the same lines, Spotify isn't the only streaming service. Just because "SNS" is top 15 there doesn't mean it's top 15 in overall streaming. Last chart, for instance, it was #21 in overall streaming.

Can someone explain to me what other factors are affecting this? Because few songs have a huge lead in one of the metrics, while Sorry Not Sorry might have all three not as big. Let's see. SNS actually rose 30-28 in the Hot 100. In terms of components, it rose 18-17 in Digital Song Sales and 22-21 in Streaming Songs but didn't chart in the Radio Songs top 50. It did rise 25-23 in Pop Songs, but the top 40 radio format is only a part of overall radio formats for most songs. In the case of SNS, it actually accounts for most of its overall radio audience. Last week, in Spotify it was #11 and in Pandora #18. kworb hasn't updated its weekly YouTube US rankings, but SNS is currently #76 so that means its probably top 50 at best assuming most views are from the US. The three Hot 100 component charts that I mentioned in the beginning are the ones that matter in the end. Basically, radio airplay is the song's weakness at this point. That said, I think it could finally make the chart in a week or two.

There are kids in grade 3 right now experiencing a Drake-less Hot 100 for the first time in their lives lol
That's funny to think about because kids wouldn't care
gravey: Hey Jason, today is the first day in your whole life that Drake doesn't have a song in the hot 100. Jason: what?

It's interesting how having a hit no longer ensures major artists can get another big hit behind it. We've seen Adele ("When We Were Young"), Ed Sheeran ("Castle on the Hill"), Katy Perry ("Unconditionally"), and Fifth Harmony ("All in my Head") struggle with second singles in recent years despite their lead singles being big hits. Other artists from Justin Bieber ("Company") to twenty one pilots ("heavydirtysoul") and now Bruno Mars ("Versace on the Floor") have had major drop-offs with a single following multiple hits. Adele doesn't belong here because she got single #3 to be a very impressively sized hit.Β I like how you mention that but not the much more obvious example of Katy Perry. Dark Horse followed Unconditionally.

^ Dark Horse already had a ton of hype before it was a single, it actually began its chart run before Unconditionally. Also it was actually released as a single when Unconditionally was on the charts for like 4 weeks. So that's kinda just like she abandoned Unconditionally for Dark Horse. Whereas Adele Send My Love wasn't released as a single until When We Were Young was off the charts entirely so that's a more appropriate example IMO

I was curious to see how out of touch I am with pop music, and counted the tracks on the Hot 100:
I have not heard 64 of the songs -- 44 songs I've not only never heard, but have no idea who the lead artist even is 20 songs I know who the artist is, but have never heard the song
Of the remaining 36 songs I have heard, I like about 20.
Fortunately I'm in touch enough to at least know 9 of the top 10 (no idea what Bodak Yellow sounds like or who Cardi B is, or even what genre -- presuming hip-hop tho?).

How likely is it they have internet access to see charts like the Hot 100 or even care about what it is? what? What's confusing about that? Would an 8-year old 3rd grader even know who Drake was? Maybe, maybe not. Musical tastes of kids at that age are influenced by what they watch on TV and what their parents permit. Oftentimes that is in natural Drake-less environments in the first place (Disney/Nick/etc.) I get what I think you are trying to say. 8 years is a long time, some people were not alive in 2009 last time there was a Drake-less Hot 100. True. Also true, the 8 year old would not notice

Is this seriously the first Drake-less Hot 100 in 8 years? Yes. Since May 2009

I was curious to see how out of touch I am with pop music, and counted the tracks on the Hot 100: I have not heard 64 of the songs -- 44 songs I've not only never heard, but have no idea who the lead artist even is 20 songs I know who the artist is, but have never heard the song Of the remaining 36 songs I have heard, I like about 20. Fortunately I'm in touch enough to at least know 9 of the top 10 (no idea what Bodak Yellow sounds like or who Cardi B is, or even what genre -- presuming hip-hop tho?). you either don't stream music much and/or don't listen to hip hop or country. And yes, you certainly VERY out of touch. I know a lot of kids that listen to many of these songs.

I don't listen to country at all and I like some hip-hop but only if it's got strong melodies. Anyway, my tastes include a lot of stuff that never charts.
