Home stretch time.
Jumping forward to 2008, the album this song was featured on was this band's first album in over a decade. I've already used one of the songs from this album very recently in a Rock Tournament, but the song that I decided to use for this rankdown was not a single.

It is, indeed, Portishead, but it's not "The Rip".

Hunter?
There's 8 potential choices for this - I knew "Machine Gun" and "The Rip" were singles, and "Magic Doors" was apparently a single too.

There's 8 potential choices for this - I knew "Machine Gun" and "The Rip" were singles, and "Magic Doors" was apparently a single too. Indeed...hence why I'm going to get rid of some of the suspense. It's the second-longest song on the album.

Can't wait for some of the reactions to this song... Okay, admittedly, it's not quite fair to say that there were two songs that my sister played above all others. Sure, "Peek-A-Boo" was one of them, but there was more than one song by the next artist that I remember her listening to all the time. That artist? Portishead. I remember so many of their songs being played seemingly on repeat: "Glory Box", "Sour Times"...pretty much all of their second album. But I wanted to focus particularly on their third album, fittingly titled Third, because two songs on that album became my favorites of theirs. I've already chosen "Machine Gun" for something else, and I figured, "Hey, why don't we make this rankdown even crazier?"
The taste of life I can't describe It's choking on my mind Reaching out I can't believe The faith it can't decide
SONG #31 Portishead - We Carry On

On to hint #32...
This song from 2007 was the second single released from this band's breakout album, but it was a UK-only single release, and it was sandwiched between two much bigger songs. The song title shares its name with a much, MUCH more famous (and famously covered) song.

or Hallelujah by Paramore Going from Portishead to this...yeah, I'm not sure about this myself. But I guess we're in too deep now. For the last of my female-fronted Alt/Rock bands, there was only one choice: One choice for a band, one choice for a song. To this day, it's one of the few songs that has ever made me cry, and it might be the only one to make me cry because of the power of the vocal performance. To this day, they can make any kind of song that they want, any kind of album that they want, they can tinker with whatever styles of music their hearts desire...because, if nothing else, I'll always have Hayley Williams' vocals, and I'll always have "Hallelujah".
Somehow, everything's gonna fall right into place If we only had a way to make it all fall faster everyday If only time flew like a dove We gotta make it fly faster than I'm falling in love
SONG #32 Paramore - Hallelujah

Three more chapters to go...here's the next hint.
When one wishes to talk about this next band, this 1987 track is the first song that will, likely, pop into a person's head when thinking about them. If you've ever been to my Alternative #1 review thread (self-plugs are fun!), you know of my love for these Aussies.

Now, I like INXS and all...but they're no Midnight Oil. Chapter Ten The Songs from the Past
I can't pinpoint when, exactly, this happened, but I really, REALLY started to take an interest in music from the past around five years ago, even more than previously. I started putting together lists of songs from previous years when it came time for year-end best-of lists, because there were so many "new" songs that I was either discovering or re-discovering. Along the way, two songs from my past came back to the forefront and immediately established themselves as some of my favorite songs of all time. The first shouldn't surprise you too much if you've been following my Alternative #1 thread. If you haven't, allow me to introduce you (or reacquaint you) to Midnight Oil.
The time has come A fact's a fact It belongs to them Let's give it back

Hint? Yes.
This band, meanwhile, has PLENTY of other songs that would be remembered before this one, even some off of their final album released before the singer's untimely death in 1991. I'd argue, though, that the opening title track from said album is among the best in this legendary band's entire discography...

Whatever will be...will be. The second song belongs to an artist that I had originally fallen in love with much earlier, around the time that I fell in love with a certain favorite band that will show up soon. In recent years, though, I've stumbled into a recurring pattern: Every year, I would discover or re-discover at least one song by Queen and fall in love with it. For years, this happened without fail. My favorite of the discoveries, without question, was the title track off of their last album. "The Show Must Go On" has long been one of my favorite Queen songs, but this song may just be even better.
While the sun hangs in the sky and the desert has sand While the waves crash in the sea and meet the land While there's a wind and the stars and the rainbow Till the mountains crumble into the plain
SONG #34 Queen - Innuendo

saw "final album released in 1991" (before you edited it to mention the singer's death) and instantly thought Talk Talk...but Laughing Stock doesn't even have a title track.

Ready for another swerve? Here's the next hint...
And now, a quick swerve to the present day! (Told you.) This song, first released as a single in 2016, is off of this band's first studio album, released earlier this year. I take every (and I do mean EVERY) opportunity possible to expose this band to more listeners, and this song, in particular. If that doesn't help, it's also the title of a famous Leonard Cohen song that's NOT "Hallelujah".

As an aside, now that I mentioned Cohen, I wish I had the forethought to include him in this rankdown. Maybe in a sequel... Chapter Eleven Back to the Future...or Present
You know what we haven't seen at all in this rankdown? Songs from the last year or so. Let's fix that. These three songs have one thing in common: They have all been at the top of one of my early year-end lists at some point. Let's start with this, a song that, for a time, was my favorite song released this year so far. It has its moments where it reminds me of Rise Against, of AFI, and, in its chorus, none other than Meat Loaf. The sum of its parts, though, is decidedly one band: Creeper.
You were the girl that the world swung for I was just a boy who sung until his lungs were sore And in your diary you had an entry Listing all your enemies, what you'd do to them, and what you'd do it for
SONG #35 Creeper - Suzanne

Five songs to go! Here's the next hint.
This next song is one that was used in a Rock Tournament game (I believe Lord submitted it for the Best of 2016 tournament as his top extra), and that's really the only hint that I can give you that might help you remotely guess what song it is. Let's see...it's off of their second album, released in 2016. It was the lead single from said album. (Also, I stand corrected: THIS is the artist that is the least-known of the 40 artists in this rankdown.)

Lonely the Brave - Black Mire Missed out by this much. (Thank god I specifically mentioned Lord's Rock Tournament pick...we might have been here all night otherwise.) The next song was, up until recently, dominating my "Songs from the Past" list for 2017. It's just one of many discoveries that have been made thanks to the fine folks over at the Alt/Rock forum and the Rock Tournament series. Many of my most recent favorite discoveries were made because of the posters there. I'm forever in your debt. I'm not sure how I'll repay that debt, but...I'm sure we'll all think of something. But I digress. This song is not the most overly original song, nor is it the most technically proficient song....but what it lacks in other areas, it more than makes up for in power. This one's for you, Lord...
What if I said that this ain't the one Thick black words of a bellowed tongue What if I said the climb of the drum Will tear down scenes when you ain't got nowhere to run
SONG #36 Lonely the Brave - Black Mire
