Most regular people are unaware of how this process works. Voting members are given a "fill in the blank" with each category listed. They make one selection in each category (there are 'prompting' materials available, but not everyone is willing to play the game). Top 5 get the nomination. Then voting members get a "multiple choice". They make one selection in each category...results are tabulated by the Secret Accounting Firm...and announced at the show.
So yes, the awards are politics.
I'm hoping for Eric Church to take the EOTY. I saw this tour...it's spectacular. He is more of a fan favorite than a 'suits' favorite, so we'll see who his peers agree with.
Zac Brown Band is wildly under rated, IMO. However they are another 'rugged individualist' type artist who are all about the music.

I'm fairly disappointed in the nominations and I'm not sure I'll watch this year because I'm tired of the Miranda Lambert show. I'm a fan of hers and I always will be despite the fact that I've been frustrated with her music lately because I think she lost something in her music ever sense Revolution was a hit because none of the albums after have really grabbed me the way each album up to that one did. Love "Tin Man" and it deserves Song of the Year nominations but agree that single is stupid and same with "Body Like A Back Road" being nominated for song, as a fan of that song and a fan of Sam Hunts I cannot say that song is among the best written songs of the past year.
Also the biggest WTH is with Lady Antebellum getting an Album of the Year nomination. They haven't released a good album since their 2nd one, what made them good on the first two albums got lost when they made the third and they have yet to rediscover it. Wish they would because those two albums are great but meh with everything else they have released

who would've thought that little Maddie & Tae could be so controversial... It is controversial because it is complte BS. I have nothing against those girls in fact I like some of their songs but they have done absolutely nothing in the last 16 months. Big & Rich are out there spending there own money getting some pretty decent air play & they may never get this opportunity again to be nominated. Brooks & Dunn just doing Vegas shows are more deserving of a nomination then M&T.

@ Maddie & Tae being nominated and that being the hot-button issue of this thread. Only thing that bothers me about the nominations is that Single and Song are exactly the same. That's so pointless. I can understand some overlap (that's normal), but like BLAR had no business being in Song and "Tin Man" shouldn't be in Single, for instance.

In Case You Didn't Know - should be nominated for Single. Drinkin Problem- should be nominated for Song

I found this on the CMA awards page about the nominating criteria.
Awards criteria, rules of election and balloting procedures are established by CMA’s Board of Directors. Singles, albums, music videos and qualified music products for the annual show must have been first released during the eligibility period, which for the 2017 show is July 1, 2016, through June 30, 2017.

It has been well established that these shows DO. NOT. FOLLOW. CRITERIA! Pulling it up and analyzing if every act fits it is pointless at this point. I wish they followed, but they don't. It is a free for all with these voters, they nominate who they are told to nominate and award who they are told to award.

It is a free for all with these voters, they nominate who they are told to nominate and award who they are told to award. Imagine if they had a fan vote. Allowing every artist eligible in every category and let the fans pick the 5 nominees,I wonder what nominations would look like? That would be interesting to see what the fans would decide.

Why are people upset about Garth getting in Entertainer? Is his tour not selling well?

Maddie and Tae don't get radio airplay, how did they get nominated? I couldn't tell you what single they released in the last year (without googling it), and I thought that had to factor into nominations. I think we often think about the rules a lot more than voters. I doubt most of the people voting know when Maddie & Tae last released a single, and whether or not it was within the eligibility period. Honestly, this is more on the CMAs to have some type of screening process to determine whether an artist should actually be eligible. The last single Maddie and Tae released was on May 16, 2016 ("Sierra") which peaked at #47. It's too bad all these awards shows are political and not based on real talent. Thank you for posting this. The CMA awards should be publicly ashamed for allowing politics to dictate their awards instead of actual accomplishments. All awards are dictated by politics to at least an extent; the Oscars, Emmys, Grammys, etc. That's just a reality you have to accept if you follow awards shows and want to keep sanity. Additionally, let's not forget the ACMs where the same song will get nominated in two separate years.

I could read the nominees only now so here what I think:
ENTERTAINER OF THE YEAR: I dont see Stapleton as a "Entertainer" and it would be a surprise to me if he wins, my bet goes on Luke or Eric.I wish Dierks would have been nominated.
SINGLE OF THE YEAR: I guess "Body Like A Back Road" will get this and I agree that "In Case You Didnt Know" or "Drinkin Problem" should get the nomination.
ALBUM OF THE YEAR: Big surprise to see Lady A on it..I wasnt expecting at all although I like the album a lot now I dont see as a winner. I guess it can be Stapleton or Miranda.
SONG OF THE YEAR: "Tin Man" would be a good winner but I think it goes for "Better Man".
FEMALE VOCALIST OF THE YEAR: I wouldnt be surprised if Maren wins it but Miranda might take this year.
MALE VOCALIST OF THE YEAR: I would love seeing Dierks gettin´it because he is my favorite among them but I think Stapleton or Thomas.
VOCAL GROUP OF THE YEAR: Little Big Town might get it although I think Lady A or Old Dominion have good chances this time.
VOCAL DUO OF THE YEAR: FGL but Brothers Osborne or Dan+Shay would be my choice.I think Maddie & Tae no comments I almost didnt remember them this year.
MUSICAL EVENT OF THE YEAR: “Craving You” – Thomas Rhett (feat. Maren Morris)
MUSIC VIDEO OF THE YEAR: “It Ain’t My Fault” – Brothers Osborne would be awesome to get it.
NEW ARTIST OF THE YEAR AWARD:Old Dominion

Just remember the eligibility time frame is July 1, 2016 to June 30, 2017
That might explain "Drinking Problem" not being nominated.

Maybe this is the seriousness of me coming out, but shouldn't the voters do a little research before nominating songs or artists? I do agree with you about the CMA having some type of screening process. It is sad that awards shows are political. If someone wants to watch a movie, or listen to a song bad enough, they will now, thanks to technology.

Universal used its considerable clout to pull Maddie & Tae back from the edge of obscurity for 2017/18. They will, most likely, have new music at some point soon and Universal knows that it needs all the help it can get if they plan to get this duo back on track.
I would have rather seen the nom go to other duos who have actually charted something in the past, well, year or so!

Shania is a hack...get real If "hack" is what we're calling the greatest-selling female country artist of all time, who released the biggest country album of all time, and has 3 diamond-certified records...then yeah, she's a hack. Otherwise, check yourself.

Shania is a hack...get real What a shame, up until this post I held you in a pretty favorable light from my limited interaction with you as poster. Anyway, I'm very excited for Shania Twain to grace the CMA stage once again with a performance instead of just a brief announcing gig! I'm sure it'll be a memorable moment.

She's protooled and autotuned up the whazoo...everything about her is skewed. She's an entertainment package, not a vocalist (Trisha Yearwood for example). She's one of those artists who wanted to be 'a star', not a singer. She was a fair "B" girl singer in the early years, disappeared then came back backed by Mutt Lange...totally over rated. .indulgecountry, we can agree to disagree on this point and still get along just fine...If we all liked the same thing at the same time we wouldn't have anything to talk about....
