Can we get this thread back to actually talking about the awards themselves? Thanks. Can you stop pretending to be a mod? Thanks.

I mean, buffalo may not be a mod, but he is very much right about this thread needing to get back on track... It is everyone's responsibility to not stir up drama or draw out petty arguments, and that is pretty much all that was happening in here a few days ago. It's not like he was trying to stifle healthy discussion that the real mods would have otherwise had no problems with... Anyway, this comment was from 3 days ago. The thread has since turned around and gotten back on track. Bringing up the argument again just to get the last word is not going to help anyone out here.

I will say that I am actually kind of excited for this award show this year. There seems to be a certain a of uncertainty with a lot of these categories.

I strongly believe Jason Isbell will win Album of the year. Grass roots sales that match (actually beyond) what Stapleton did with "Traveller" (pre CMA) but most importantly its a unique sound away from his prior albums. Sonically, country is in that 2-3 year window of the "blues country" fad. We know the "outside noise" to country rotates every few years. Isbell is at an opportunity to change the "outside noise" sonically, garner a new in crowd to country radio, etc. I have to believe the voting parties recognize his talent. Call me crazy but I would actually be highly surprised if Lambert or Stapleton takes this from him.

Chris was only grassroots in the sense that the casual fan didn't know who he was (yet), but he's super connected in the industry. Jason has none of those things. I'd love to see him win, but I'm just stunned he even got a nod.

I think Jason Isbell is the least-likely to win Album of the Year out of all 5 nominees. It's definitely a two-horse race between Miranda Lambert and Chris Stapleton imo, and I think Miranda has the edge.

I puck Chris Stapleton, but think itll be awesome to see a dark horse like Jason Isbell win, plus he's on a smaller label.

Am I the only one who gets disappointed when Single / Song of the Year categories are near, or completely identical? I guess for me I feel there is huge distinction between what song sounds sonically good (single) and what sound sounds lyrically good (song) that there isn't a need for all five nominees in each category to be the same.
Sad Brett Young didn't get any nominations for 'In Case You Didn't Know', thought he would be a shoe in for Song of the Year, but I'm betting 'Tin Man' snags Song (although I want 'Better Man' to) and 'Body Like a Backroad' snags Single. Or it may be the Miranda show, and she'll win everything.

Entertainer: Garth Brooks • Eric Church • Luke Bryan • Keith Urban • Chris Stapleton
Who Will Win: Garth Brooks My Pick: Eric Church
This is tough. Once again, Garth has the numbers, but I'd like to see this award get spread around a little bit. Luke Bryan had a quiet year, and so I would like to see Eric Church get it - this may be his only chance. I think Garth might take it again though.
Female: Kelsea Ballerini • Maren Morris • Miranda Lambert • Reba McEntire • Carrie Underwood
Who Will Win: Miranda Lambert My Pick: Reba McEntire
I'll never not root for Reba. It was a quietish year for her, but she did release a very well received #1 album in the eligibility period. I do think she has a tiny chance, but this is probably between Maren and Miranda. Miranda released a stellar album in the eligibility period, which I think will tip things in her favor.
Male: Dierks Bentley • Eric Church • Keith Urban • Thomas Rhett • Chris Stapleton
Who Will Win: Eric Church My Pick: Eric Church
I think this is Eric Church's year, but I also wouldn't be surprised to see Thomas Rhett get it. I think the CMA will move on from Chris Stapleton this year.
Duo: Florida Georgia Line • Dan + Shay • Maddie & Tae • Brothers Osborne • LOCASH
Who Will Win: Florida Georgia Line My Pick: Florida Georgia Line
Not a ton of competition for this award this year. FGL had far and away the strongest year, so I think they should take it.
Group: Lady Antebellum • Rascal Flatts • Old Dominion • Little Big Town • Zac Brown Band
Who Will Win: Little Big Town My Pick: Zac Brown Band
I would love to see the ZBB finally win this, but I bet LBT will get it yet again.
New Artist: Lauren Alaina • Luke Combs • Jon Pardi • Brett Young • Old Dominion
Who Will Win: Brett Young My Pick: Luke Combs
The only new artists nominated for this are Brett and Luke, so I would like to see one of them get it. Both had huge hits this year, but I think that "In Case You Didn't Know" had slightly more impact than "Hurricane".
Album: The Breaker, Little Big Town • Heart Break, Lady Antebellum • From A Room, Vol. 1, Chris Stapleton • The Weight of These Wings, Miranda Lambert • The Nashville Sound, Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit
I don't think the groups stand a chance, but any of the other 3 could get this. Miranda's album is such a statement though that I think she will get it.
Who Will Win: The Weight Of These Wings My Pick: The Weight Of These Wings
Single: "Tin Man," Miranda Lambert • "Body Like A Back Road," Sam Hunt • "Dirt On My Boots," Jon Pardi • "Blue Ain't Your Color," Keith Urban • "Better Man," Little Big Town
I could see "Better Man" or "Tin Man" winning, but I think "Body Like A Back Road" is too undeniable not to win this.
Who Will Win: Body Like A Back Road My Pick: Body Like A Back Road
Song: "Tin Man," Miranda Lambert, Jack Ingram, Jon Randall • "Body Like A Back Road," Sam Hunt, Shane McAnally, Josh Osbourne • "Dirt On My Boots," Rhett Akins, Ashley Gorley, Jesse Frasure • "Blue Ain't Your Color," Hillary Lindsey, Steven Lee Olsen, Clint Lagerberg • "Better Man," Taylor Swift
Who Will Win: Tin Man My Pick: Tin Man
"Better Man" pull off an upset, but I think this is "Tin Man"'s award to lose.
Video: "Vice," Miranda Lambert • "Craving You," Thomas Rhett ft. Maren Morris • "It Ain't My Fault," Brothers Osborne • "Blue Ain't Your Color," Keith Urban • "Better Man," Little Big Town
Who Will Win: Better Man My Pick: Vice
This is the CMA's chance to award "Better Man", though I think that the "Vice" video is far superior.
Musical Event: "Kill A Word," Eric Church ft. Rhiannon Giddens • "Funny How Time Slips Away," Willie Nelson ft. Glen Campbell • "Craving You," Thomas Rhett ft. Maren Morris • "Speak To A Girl," Tim McGraw & Faith Hill • "Setting the World On Fire," Kenny Chesney ft. P!nk
Who Will Win: Kill A Word My Pick: Setting The World On Fire
I'd love to see either "Speak To A Girl" or "Setting The World On FIre" get this, but I think things will go in Eric's favor this year. Glen Campbell could pull off a sentimental win, and this could be the CMA's chance to give both Thomas and Maren something while denying them the bigger categories. Any of these could conceivably win.
Musician: Jerry Douglas • Paul Franklin • Dan Huff • Derek Wells • Mac McAnally
Who Will Win: Mac McAnally My Pick: Mac McAnally
Mac seems unstoppable in this category right now.

From a Room winning would be a joke ( releasing a nine song album where four of the songs are just complete filler? lol) Won't complain at all if Weight of These Wings or THe Breaker wins. both very good albums. But anyways obviously Isbell had the best album of the bunch but sadly probably doesn't mean anything

Maybe someone here has already explained it and I just overlooked it, but what is the difference between "Song of the Year" and "Single of the Year"? This is one thing I've never really understood about these award shows, especially when the nominees are mostly the same.

This is one thing I've never really understood about these award shows, especially when the nominees are mostly the same. Song of the Year goes to the songwriters and Single of the Year goes to the artist who recorded it. Basically it's about quality vs. success, which is why a lot of posters are saying that "Tin Man" or "Better Man" are front-runners for Song, while "Body Like a Back Road" is likely to win Single.

Just A theory, but do we think that the whole Las Vegas shooting put a stop on possible announcement of performers and now CMAS want to put a bit of distance in time between the Vegas shooting and announcing performers?

Curious to see what happens if Isbell does win, since he's always been one to slam basically anything mainstream/awards-related.

My predictions:
Entertainer:
• Garth Brooks - Could Win/Will Win • Eric Church - Should Win/Will Win • Luke Bryan • Keith Urban • Chris Stapleton
I think this one will be between Garth and Eric. Garth won last year, but he's just continued to have such a huge tour, and his managing team is touting his record numbers of tickets sold in North America. So that's kind of hard to deny. On the other hand...Eric had a big tour, and it would have been one of the biggest tours under normal circumstances (if a behemoth like Garth wasn't in the midst of a comeback tour, that is). Eric played a lot of shows and a lot of music, and for a long time, too. So I can definitely see him winning. Luke has big tour numbers as well, but his star isn't shining quite as bright right now as it has in recent years. Stapleton has become a big name (deservedly so), but I don't think he's popular enough to win this yet. I'd love for Keith Urban to win it again, as he had a really successful year with "Blue Ain't Your Color" and "The Fighter", plus his album and ticket sales were great, but I think Eric and Garth have the best chance.
Female Vocalist:
• Kelsea Ballerini • Maren Morris - Could Win • Miranda Lambert - Should Win/Will Win • Reba McEntire • Carrie Underwood
Miranda hasn't had much luck with radio lately, but the award shows love her. Carrie finally stopped Miranda's streak last year, but then Carrie switched labels earlier this year and has been on hiatus for the last few months as she works on her next album. She did have a successful duet with Keith Urban, but I'd be surprised if Carrie wins this. Miranda, on the other hand, has done a lot of touring and her two-disc album has sold decently well, all things considered. Kelsea's music remains too "bubble gum pop-ish" for her to win, but Maren could be the dark horse to knock off Miranda here, especially if the CMA voters want to move on to a newer artist.
Male Vocalist:
• Dierks Bentley • Eric Church - Should Win • Keith Urban - Should Win • Thomas Rhett - Could Win • Chris Stapleton - Should Win/Will Win
This is actually a tough one to predict. Dierks is the king of nominations but never wins anything...will voters finally throw him a bone? I definitely think he should have at least one male vocalist award on his shelf, but the problem is that this past year wasn't as big for him as the couple of years before. Eric definitely has a strong chance, as does reigning winner Chris Stapleton. Thomas Rhett is another possibility, and he's won this award at the ACMs. And then Keith is the veteran artist who just had one of his best years in quite some time...could he possibly pull it off? I'm gonna give the slight edge to Stapleton (just ahead of Eric and Keith), but if Garth or someone else wins Entertainer, then I could see MV going to Eric.
Duo:
• Florida Georgia Line - Could Win • Dan + Shay • Maddie & Tae • Brothers Osborne - Should Win/Will Win • LOCASH
This is a two-horse race between FGL and Brothers Osborne, and given that Brothers Osborne won it last year, I think they've got a pretty good chance of winning again. FGL had two pretty successful duets, though, as well as a big tour, so that could certainly help their chances. However, I think the CMA voters will continue to lean towards the more critically-acclaimed Brothers Osborne.
Group:
• Lady Antebellum • Rascal Flatts • Old Dominion - Could Win • Little Big Town - Should Win/Will Win • Zac Brown Band
I expect this one to go to LBT again. The only group I could see dethroning them is Old Dominion, as they've been quite successful and their fan-base and support continues to grow. Lady A's comeback has been moderately successful but I don't think they have enough momentum to pull off the win here. The Zac Brown Band remains a bit left of center when it comes to the industry overall, but they'll also be hurt by the fact that their radio momentum has really waned in the last couple of years. Rascal Flatts scored a radio hit with "Yours If You Want It" but they're definitely in their twilight years so I don't think they have much of a chance here.
New Artist:
• Lauren Alaina • Luke Combs - Could Win • Jon Pardi - Should Win/Will Win • Brett Young - Could Win • Old Dominion - Could Win
I'm surprised more people aren't picking Jon, given that "Dirt On My Boots" is nominated for both Single and Song of the Year. That to me suggests that Jon is the front-runner here, although Luke and Brett have a lot of momentum right now, and Old Dominion seems to have quite a bit of industry support as well. I'm glad Lauren was nominated but I think she's easily the least likely to win.
Album:
• The Breaker, Little Big Town • Heart Break, Lady Antebellum • From A Room, Vol. 1, Chris Stapleton - Could Win • The Weight of These Wings, Miranda Lambert - Will Win • The Nashville Sound, Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit - Should Win
You can never count Stapleton out, but I think Miranda probably has the edge here, especially because of the length and depth of her album (whereas Stapleton's album is a brisk 9 tracks). Jason Isbell is definitely the outsider and dark horse here, and I certainly think his album is more than good enough to win...but will he get enough votes to top Stapleton and Lambert? He got enough to make the final five so I have to believe there's a chance, but I predict Lambert will top Stapleton and Isbell.
Single:
• "Tin Man," Miranda Lambert • "Body Like A Back Road," Sam Hunt - Will Win • "Dirt On My Boots," Jon Pardi - Could Win • "Blue Ain't Your Color," Keith Urban - Should Win • "Better Man," Little Big Town - Could Win
If we're going by success, then you really can't argue against "Body Like A Back Road" winning. However, despite Sam's escalating and tremendous success, he really hasn't been awarded by the country award shows, and hasn't received much in the way of nominations, either. Was BLABR big enough to overcome all that? Maybe, maybe not. "Tin Man" is a great song but shouldn't be nominated here, and I really hope it doesn't win. It should have a strong chance in the Song of the Year category, though. I feel that both "Blue Ain't Your Color" and "Better Man" have strong chances as well, but I'll give the edge to Sam.
Song:
• "Tin Man," Miranda Lambert, Jack Ingram, Jon Randall - Could Win • "Body Like A Back Road," Sam Hunt, Shane McAnally, Josh Osbourne • "Dirt On My Boots," Rhett Akins, Ashley Gorley, Jesse Frasure • "Blue Ain't Your Color," Hillary Lindsey, Steven Lee Olsen, Clint Lagerberg - Could Win • "Better Man," Taylor Swift - Should Win/Will Win
I think this will probably come down to "Tin Man" vs. "Better Man", and I give "Better Man" the edge. It was a big success, received a lot of praise...and you just know the CMA would love for Taylor Swift to accept an award on stage (or they'll have a remote video of her if they have to). BAYC also has a chance here, but I can't see BLABR or DOMB winning this one.
Video:
• "Vice," Miranda Lambert • "Craving You," Thomas Rhett ft. Maren Morris - Could Win • "It Ain't My Fault," Brothers Osborne - Should Win/Will Win • "Blue Ain't Your Color," Keith Urban • "Better Man," Little Big Town - Could Win
I really hope this goes to the hilariously epic "It Ain't My Fault" video, but the big budget "Craving You" definitely has a chance as well.
Musical Event:
• "Kill A Word," Eric Church ft. Rhiannon Giddens - Could Win • "Funny How Time Slips Away," Willie Nelson ft. Glen Campbell - Should Win/Will Win • "Craving You," Thomas Rhett ft. Maren Morris - Could Win • "Speak To A Girl," Tim McGraw & Faith Hill • "Setting the World On Fire," Kenny Chesney ft. P!nk
I expect Glen to pick up a posthumous win here, but I could see "Craving You" having a slight shot due to its impact, or "Kill A Word" winning due to its message.

But honestly, why is Garth so thirsty to win again. He had no business to win last year or this year, but here we are again with him. For the reasons that Garth Brooks' shows are sellouts and he has sold the most tickets (six million of them). His recent radio presence has gotten him two top twenty hits so far off his current album. It would not surprise me whatsoever to see him walk away with a sixth award.

But honestly, why is Garth so thirsty to win again. He had no business to win last year or this year, but here we are again with him. Why wouldn't someone want to win? I don't quite understand this argument. Everybody wants to win, and the artist with the most votes wins. That was Garth last year, and it could very well be him again this year. He's setting records with the number of tickets he's selling so I don't understand how he has "no business" winning. I'd prefer for someone else to win, but wouldn't be surprised if it's Garth, and I wouldn't really have any issues with him winning, either.

All he's got is the tour. In my opinion you should have touring numbers, great album and single sales/streaming and consistent radio success to be Entertainer of the Year. Garth has one of those right now, where most of the other nominees hit all those points. Garth didn't even have it last year. None of the other artists seem to be trying to get votes like he is, just seems so desperate. Clearly, I'm not a fan of his, and just don't understand the appeal of him.
