Hadn't been familiar with her music (ex. bury a friend and had seen her clips of other songs only on Hot 100 videos). Not really a fan of this album but I like ilomilo and started to like bury a friend. Also listened to Lovely and you should see me in a crown in full and... wow great songs! She's definitely incredebly talented and doing amazing on streams. I wish her luck!

I think it's more amazing considering the entire album was made by her and her brother Finneas Like that's not common for a major artist
All the more making the album even more impressive, gotta give credit where credit is due

This girl feels like the faddiest of all music fads. I’m sure she’ll be jokingly referenced in 1-2 years time.

I, too, am curious/skeptical as to her staying power in the industry. Despite making such a huge splash in the industry, Billie's mother Lorde fizzled completely on her sophomore. Never mind it being the superior album to Pure Heroine and also that AOTY nom, but...facts are facts. She is pretty much a non-thing now. The twee goth female thing has always seemed destined to be a footnote in pop culture/musical history, but some good shit has definitely come out of it, this album being one of them. ilomilo grew on me.

I don't think I'd call Lorde a footnote in musical history when her existence, along with LDR, completely changed the sound of pop music and inspired an entire generation of artists (some of whom are probably yet to be discovered).

I mean, Lorde released Melodrama 4 years after Pure Heroine, with only a few soundtrack songs in between. Not to mention Melodrama is certainly a different album sonically than Pure Heroine. I doubt Billie will take such long breaks.
As long as she doesn't fuck things up and ended becoming a caricature of herself ala Meghan Trainor, she'll be fine.

I'm getting Britney Spears vibes from her from phenomenon point of view: a new fresh pop idol for teens who is not relying on just one song like Meghan Trainor and Lorde to some extent did. The fanbase is just HUGE. I mean 7M streams for Bad Guy on Spotify, that's like Ariana Grande/Drake level and basically each song has charted higher than the previous.

bad guy xanny you should see me in a crown when the party’s over my strange addiction bury a friend ilomilo i love you
Listened to it 3x on a loop and even if I don’t love every song, it’s a cohesive album nonetheless. I also understand where the “fad” comments are coming from but I think her raw musical talent provides a great foundation and I’m very interesting in seeing how her (and Finneas’) sound evolves as she gets older.

Billie has already showcased evolvement in her artistry. Ocean Eyes and Six Feet Under would sound out of place here themeatically and even a bit sound wise. This album is all around much darker in both lyrics and production than her debut EP. Her stuff from before "bitches broken hearts," while still moody, were much more airy and lighter. She's definitely evolved from that, so there's no reason to think she wouldn't continue to evolve past this. I do agree that this album, while very good, sounds like it will for sure be very "of its time" with the dark electronic production and depressing teen angst lyrics, but when you dive into Billie's full discograpgy, there's more to her than what this album represents, and definitely has more up her sleeve than this one single emotion. While her star power will fade (as everyone's does), I don't think she herself will be seen as a fad (like Meghan Trainor), but rather the sound this album is in will be.
And lol @ Lorde being a fad. On mainstream success maybe, but girl inspired a whole niche of pop music this decade. Halsey and Billie wouldn't be given the time of day had Lorde not come first.

All 14 tracks are inside the top-45 on Apple Music and 13/14 are top-30 on Spotify (!!!!!!! is unsurprisingly not in the top-50 although it’s #25 on Apple Music).

Spotify charts probably have rules to exclude short skits and interludes.

Yeah, I believe Spotify does not track streams for track below 30 seconds. At least not initially. I've noticed on the desktop app, when an album drops, the short skits will always say <1000 for a few weeks and then suddenly will update to a decent number that makes sense with the rest of the album. My guess is the system that tracks the streams requires 30 seconds to count it, so they have to "manually" update streams for songs below 30 seconds, therefore making it impossible for them to chart on the Spotify charts.

This is exactly what I expected. A very cohesive record with a couple of instant songs and others that I won't bother checking again because their sound was executed better in the other tracks. Bury A Friend is the best song on the album which is not surprising since it's version 2 of this mid-00s classic.

Billie/Finneas with Timbaland could be fucking incredible. I'm imagining some mashup of Nelly Furtado's "Maneater" and Billie's "bad guy." That would go the fuck off!

I mean, Timbaland has been recycling his beats for the last 15 years so that's probably exactly what it would sound like.

Debuts atop in the UK. She becomes the youngest ever female artist to debut at #1 there.

With all the weird UK chart occurances, I'm genuinely surprised that she's the youngest to have a #1 album

That's pretty awesome, but yeah, I'm also surprised given there have been plenty of young female artists before in the 14-17 range.
Who holds said record for the US?
Edit: I think it's LeAnn Rimes at age 14.

#1 with 307k SPS (165k sales) per HITS. 313k SPS (170k sales) per Billboard. Also the youngest woman to debut at #1 since Demi in 2009 (she was 16). Who’s the youngest woman to have her *first* album *debut* at #1? I’m thinking Britney; she was barely 17 when BOMT dropped. Correct me if I’m wrong (LeAnn and Demi’s sophomore albums debuted at #1).
