I really like it. It's a different sound from his self-titled, but it's a nice evolution.
I really want him to have a radio hit, but this isn't it. I hope he can become a critical darling with this next album that he releases (also hope it doesn't get postponed to death by Island like the last one).

I fux with this. I'm shocked Island held on to him; hopefully they do right by this era (not holding my breath). lmao this was my thought too. They screwed his debut so bad, and they still hung onto him. Maybe they'll right the ship? Doubt it. I hope he becomes bigger, but I hope they don't make him go for some ratchet jams or something to give him a hit because that is not what he's about. I think if he and Island can play their cards right, he really could become a big act in the critical lane. This gives me hope he might be going for some high quality stuff. |

It's as much a "rip off" of "Redbone" as it is Miguel, Raphael Saadiq, or a slew of forgotten 90's neo-soul tracks... it's just throwback R&B.

I think the success of "Redbone" certainly influenced them to go this direction. It's all 70's soul, but it's hard to deny a record as big as "Redbone" not being a factor in this sound.

We all know soul music is nothing new and tons of artists use the sound, but redbone was able to find success outside of urban and urban ac radio so of course it's going to influence others to follow. I don't even know why that's a debate, but okay. |
