All hope now relies on Taylor to release something on Monday now.

I think it's time to accept the fact that Despacito is gonna tie the OSD record

No current songs are headed to #1, so unless a new Taylor Swift song comes soon(and does what everyone here says it will do), 17 looks good too
If this were any other song, a song, admittedly on the decline but holding a big lead over #2 (as of last week a 46% lead) has probably at least 3 weeks left in it

What has been the highest sales week of the year? Taylor has to have the song available on Spotify Apple Music etc to have a shot. She can delay the rest of the songs when album comes though, but put the lead single there

She can delay the rest of the songs when album comes though, but put the lead single there Its Shape Of You with 240k followed by Shape of You with 200k followed by I'm The One with 171k. So Taylor "only" has to sell 241k for the highest sales week of the year and I think it's possible. I can't imagine her not putting the lead single on the streaming sites when she knows damn well how important it is. I think J Cole nearly out debuting her earlier this year because of streaming alone was a wake up call.

Taylor's lead single might actually end the trend of #1s being men

Taylor's lead single might actually end the trend of #1s being men Actually if you look at the "Top 10 in 2016" post that shows up here ever week this week last year Closer replaced Cheap Thrills and so this week is the anniversary of no females at the lead artist at number 1. And if somehow we get past the weeks where Closer was #1 (12 weeks later) and no woman hit number 1 then it will be a year with no women at number 1 at all, even as featured.

I think this male thing might be an effect of more popular Urban on the charts, so we'll have to wait until that ends (which I hope it doesn't)

^What this tells me is that we need a #1 debut, and fast. I do somewhat still believe that maybe a T-Swift release will come tomorrow, but that could very well not happen.

It's not a US-only thing. Dua Lipa's New Rules is the first UK #1 hit for a lead female since Hello as well.
Friday release on all the major outlets (yes, including Spotify, otherwise she's not gonna do it) is Taylor's best chance. 200K downloads should be doable for her.

If Taylor is stupid enough to not put her shit on Spotify, it won't crack top 5

If Taylor is stupid enough to not put her s**t on Spotify, it won't crack top 5 This might be more for albums, but her label is also not stupid enough to not realize that when her stuff isn't on streaming, boatloads of people buy her records. Her last 3 albums didn't open with 1 million sales weeks, and her last 2 lead singles with 500k plus for no reason. Yes, times were different then with record sales being bigger and streaming not as much, but sometimes labels are more interested if much bigger profits can be made, and in Taylor's case the songs/albums all went to #1 anyway.

In general, I honestly don't think labels care about whether a song debuts at #1 or even gets there altogether as long as it makes a ton of money. It's good for marketing, sure, but us chart watchers seem to care a lot more about charts than most artists do.

Well maybe she can debut at #1 with just the video counting as streams (at least 20m?), as long she get decent amount of sales since Despacito is not as strong in points like few weeks ago I'll probably die if she flops

I'm sure I made a relatively detailed post about the current (current to whenever I made it, a few weeks ago) situation with female artists at #1. I will try and dig it up ETA: To add to the lack of women in the top 10 last week, we haven't had a woman at #1 since November. If you ignore features, the last female #1 was last August with Cheap Thrills! As I pointed out in that post about women in the top 10, 2014 was quite the opposite. Everything until March was female (including features), and everything from June to the end of the year, bar Rude for six weeks in the summer, was by a female. It will be interesting to see what female act will get the next #1, seeing as both Katy and Gaga failed (and I don't mean fail in the sense that they flopped or anything, or that they were expected to debut at the top). Maybe Alessia or Selena? Although that would still continue the featured streak. Bon Appétit? Surprise Ariana release? Taylor later in the year? Gaga jump with The Cure? It will be interesting to see ETA: To add to that, it has been 24 weeks since there has been a female #1. The longest I could find since then (some got close with around 20 but usually with two songs with long runs) was 30 weeks from December 2005 to July 2006!

Did 'New Rules' benefit from the new rules of cutting streaming points? If they didn't cut Despacito's streaming points, maybe Despacito is still #1 at this point.

People would call me mad if I'd write that I think that Feel It Still would be a top 10 hit. But now? The chances are really high, tbh.
