This is really puzzling because so many people are saying that this sounds like a flop and is the worst song of her career, yet it's breaking so many records lmao. Perhaps most people purchased the song before even listening to it? Anyway, I feel like Taylor's decision to release the song is going to bite her in the ass eventually. I've never seen a comeback single have more negative perception than this has had so far (even moreso than Perfect Illusion), so we'll just have to wait and see if the hype is going to be short-lived... Me :kii: But this still has the #2 song down to 0.1715 on iTunes and is increasing in views a lot on YouTube, so although it may seem a lot of people may not like it, they must be a vocal minority because.. it is still doing well? I agree with your point, it is a little confusing, because Focus and Perfect Illusion were hated and didn't last long (as expected). However, this is still nearly as powerful as it was when it was first released It is "still" doing well? It was literally released less than 48 hours ago. Let's not polish the longevity trophy just yet. TS has a large fan base and the curiosity of the general public. This will obviously fly high for a while. Let's see if it's still #1 in 10 weeks or not. That'll be the test.

Yes, unless a song is #1 for ten weeks, it's not a hit.

If a song opens as strongly as this is, then yes, it should remain stable for two to three months. Is that even a long time? TS fans are already calling this the biggest hit of the year but making excuses for it to fall only 10 weeks into its run too. Lol.

The former had fallen to #2 (0.6067) within 48 hours and Focus had fallen to #4 (no point comparing its pop bars because it was behind Hello). So compared to them, yes, it is still doing well. Will it collapse in a week and die quickly? I don't know but right now, the amount of hate it seems to be getting does not seem to be leading to it crashing on iTunes/YouTube/Spofity/anywhere. If anything, I think it is getting much more hate than those two yet #2 is still at 0.1715

Its streaming is out of the park (Spotify and Youtube) and its sales are staggering for this climate. I don't think the general consensus is that this song is terrible, just Taylor has her detractors out in full force right now (not to say that there aren't many neutral parties who just don't like the song, simply that there are many who are trying to actively find failure due to their own personal distaste for her). The video premieres tomorrow and I know they'll have went all out to ensure some of those who might not find the song particularly strong to come around. I think, unlike some, a perfect trajectory is in the works and this will be not only a multi-week topper, but have solid longevity. This song may not be incredible, but with an amazing video coupled with the incessant push her label is known for, it's gonna be juuuuuust fine. People said she was gonna be "over" after the messy Grammy performance with Stevie Nicks, when she was gearing to pop with Red, after the Kanye/Kim fiasco, so so many times. Some are salivating for her failure and she just keeps getting better and stronger. Lol :)

Funny how Taylor fans tried to call "Pillowtalk" a "flop" a few pages back for literally debuting at #1 and not staying there forever, but are already making excuses for this to fall. Whether it's #1 or #3 in 10 weeks is irrelevant. If it's not close to the top after debuting as strong as it did, it means it debuted this high out of buzz/curiosity/core fans and not because of a high public approval rating. That's the point to take away here. Not chart pedantics.

There's a lot of hype around the song right now so of course it's going to get a ton of streaming points. Any major single would get that in the beginning. This one is getting it to a greater extent because there's so much coverage around it. It'll take a little bit for it to sink in and then we'll see if the song is good enough to stand on its own. Debuting at/jumping to #1 on the Hot 100 will help it out too.

This is Taylor Swift we are talking about. Regardless of the quality or the reviews, did people really expect this to pull a Perfect Illusion? Taylor and Adele are the only artists that have consistently pulled over 1 million first week album sales with their past 2 projects (well I dunno if Adele did for 21 but I'm pretty sure she did have a million selling week at one point). Gaga had that with BTW but that was with that whole Amazon discount to 1.99 or whatever. I'm not shocked by the airplay at all because we all knew there would be a deal. Streaming, no one had a clue bc she has never been available.
I'm not saying this is gonna fall drastically, I think the next few weeks will be very interesting regarding this song. It's a big thing right now in the news/social media but with the mixed response it is getting with all the coverage, I honestly could see a backlash. I'm surprised there hasn't been more talk about her playing the victim again. Maybe I just haven't come across it. But "Look What you made me do" - oh, I just completely changed me bc you hurt me is essentially what the song is saying. Especially with "the old Taylor is dead."
I'm 50/50 with the song. I guess I wanted something that was more fun? I was more of a fan of The singles from 1989 other than SIO. And I'll be totally honest, I knew she would have to comment on the Kimye situation but I was hoping for more of a deep cut rather than a lead single addressing it. I hope for her that this is it and the album is not more of the same Kimye/Katy/exes who done her wrong or else she might have a problem. She might be self-aware but maybe not that self aware.
At the same time, we all might be the butt of the joke bc we're buying into these feuds. Maybe they all agreed to it. Granted, Taylor so far is the only one running to the bank at this point. I guess we'll see how this unfolds. I'm here for it.

I simply called out the double standards I've read here and provided examples (you should too if you must reply). Agree, it's all relative. Taylor is so popular (the second best selling album artist of last let's say 6 years behind Adele) so OF COURSE her new song is a number one. But relatively speaking I'd say Look What You Made Me Do spending only 2 or 3 weeks at #1 of Hot 100 and a month in top five is the same as Gaga spending a week in top 10/20. The scale is so different and the first two weeks are pretty much only about the anticipation.

I get that you're a Lady Gaga superfan and get hype when her album goes from #185 to #178 (no shade just observation), but no. As far as radio success goes, this, like any other big release, needs about two weeks or so before anything can really be said about it. Overall, even if it's still a short lived hit, it's still a hit, and one that obviously got notice. And if this spends 3 weeks at #1 on the Hot 100, it is a far bigger hit than any Lady Gaga or Katy Perry single post-2013 stateside aside from Dark Horse without question.

I was talking about from her career point of view as her career is much bigger in pop than anyone else's besides Adele but yeah, I love Gaga more that Taylor so there's that

Guys, let's talk about Beyoncé instead.
Actually, let's have a little reminder instead. Posting Rules1. Stay on topic. -- try to keep all conversation relevant to the original topic at hand. If it's a topic about a specific single, keep the discussion related to that song. Same with topics about specific albums, artists, movies, etc. Some progression of the discussion away from the original intent is okay if the discussion is a quality one that grew naturally out of the conversation, but ideally discussion will come back to the original topic within a reasonable time. Some examples of unnecessarily going off topic include: - Ranking songs in the middle of singles topics is not allowed and must be relocated to specific Rank the Songs topics. Failure to do so may result in the topic being locked.
- Bringing other artists into a discussion, especially for the purposes of bashing or baiting. This will result in a warning.
3. No Personal Attacks. -- Personal attacks towards other board members anywhere on the message board will not be tolerated and will result in a warning/possible suspension. These include, but are not limited to: - direct insults
- underhanded comments (i.e.: "Well you must have heard a different version of that song", "Well you need to get your ears cleaned out")
- racial/homophobic comments & any slurs against those with developmental disabilities (these will not be tolerated and will result in a suspension/permaban)
In evaluating possible personal attacks, staff will consider the intent of the poster and the poster's relationship with those addressed in questionable posts. Posters are also encouraged to work out possible issues in a respectful manner with each other via PM. Staff may initiate such group PM discussions. 4. No Trolling. -- Posting messages with the intention of starting arguments/upsetting other members will not be tolerated and will result in the topic being locked and warnings/suspensions given. Posts seen as bordering on trolling will be considered as such and given the same treatment as obvious trolling posts. This includes but is not limited to: - repeatedly trashing specific artists in the same topics
- retaliating against other members by insulting artists you assume to be someone they like. (i.e.: "I didn't like Christina's last album." "It's not like Britney has done anything good lately!!")
- replying to a troll in a trollish matter. It brings you down with them and may result in warnings for both people.
In evaluating possible trolling, staff will consider the intent of the poster and whether the poster was joking rather than deliberately derailing the thread.
If you require any clarification on the above, please refer to this topic, located in The Lounge. Anyway, 2nd day Spotify stats: US - 2,338,968 UK - 407,117 (fell to #2) Global - 5,429,680

Wow, a loss of nearly 1.5M streams after one day. But it was to be expected I guess, you get huge hype for one day, and then it starts falling down, never to truly reach that height ever again. However, my guess is the number of streams may stabilize and the song could hold in the top 5 for a while, unless it gets a burst of life once the video gets released, which might just happen, who knows.

The Spotify drop is not alarming since huge debuts tend to drop during the weekend when old hits increase so it will probably drop today as well. Strong numbers nonetheless.
The song was apparently recorded last year since Joseph posted on Twitter that they started working on the video concert and preparations way back in January, shot it throughout May, and it was in post-production until this morning. He's also liked a couple of tweets that imply that she kills herself in the video.

Don't forget that Shake It Off, one of her biggest hits, only spent four weeks at #1 after debuting (and holding it for a second), as it was blocked by a random first single from essentially a nobody. At a quick glance, it looks like Shake It Off underperformed, but if you look at he situation itself, you will see both were extremely strong and as sometimes the chart is just luck, All About That Bass got lucky. I think there may even have been some weeks where people were convinced based on the numbers/what the numbers should be, Shake It Off should have been #1

Yeah were it not for AATB Shake it Off would have logged like 12 weeks at #1.
So, according to allow that, just barely a hit.
