I'm impressed, especially after the monster first day it had. Plus it was able to stay top ten. Really decent, all things considered.

She also did Shake It Off at the VMAs in 2014 That's well before the album came out? When we got into 2015 and 2016, she wasn't doing the conventional promo we associate with big pop acts. There was no random Thursday night Fallon appearance. No TODAY Show or Good Morning America Summer Concert Series. No appearance as the musical guest on SNL. She premiered videos for her singles - but didn't actually perform the songs - at the 2015 BBMAs, VMAs and NYRE. And so my question is - does that change for this album cycle? First, what kind of promo will she do in the lead-up to Reputation? And then will she do promo throughout the era or kind of let the songs live or die on their own? The only talk show appearance she did was in February 2015 for "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon". This album cycle nothing is known about the promo. Before in the past eras,We got UK Talk Show appearances about a month before album release. Release week was The Late Night Shows,Ellen Etc. If she is cutting back this era and the interviews/performances end up on Taylor Swift Now on Directv Now exclusively it could happen. This deal with AT&T could be affecting what we see in promotion this era. and Congrats to Taylor on finally getting a UK #1 Single. :)

What was the first day on Pop?

The first day was also the biggest first day ever and the 8th day is simply a response to that. It's still in the actual top 10. I think this is actually the first song SINCE Born This Way (and second song since the PPW began in 1994) that a song hit the Top 10 in only its second week* in the Top 40.
(by second week, I mean second published chart. In both cases, the songs reached the top 10 in under a week.)

The track length for the opener on the album (3:28) is now showing on iTunes, which means we're probably getting the first promotional single in the next week or two. Sooner than you think ;)

It's really interesting to see her releasing a promotional single so early because I don't think she's ever released a promotional single this early (except for "Change" from Fearless but that was a special case due to its association with the Olympics). I wonder if she's putting a promotional single out early to win back people who were turned off by "Look What You Made Me Do"? Kind of like how Ed Sheeran released "Shape of You" and "Castle on the Hill" at the same time to ease people into new material because "Shape of You" sounded nothing like what Ed had done before.

If this is a promo single, I believe it will be aimed at those people that didn't like this song. Most likely a pure pop song (and not dark) like "Welcome to New York" and "Out of the Woods" to prove to the world she hasn't gone completely nuts and that the lead single was just a satire. OR she is nuts indeed.

I fully expected a promo single in mid-September to continue to boost pre-orders and to show diversity of album. The 2nd 'radio' single (3rd release) will be issued 3rd week in October to carry through the holiday season. I don't see LWYMMD having the radio longevity of a SOY, which has actually hurt ES. COTH was a disappointing follow-up at radio (relatively speaking) and only didn't get classified as a 'flop' because of the promo release gave it a #6 peak at H100.

Yeah it's been interesting to see the Castle on the Hill strategy play out, because even though there are many ways to judge the metrics of a successful single, on its own terms, it really didn't smash.
PS: Has anyone noticed a backlash to the backlash beginning to occur?

I've said it before: if you're a big name star and you're gonna release an anticipated promo single before the album, DO NOT RELEASE SOMETHING YOU'LL WANT TO SEND TO RADIO LATER. Maybe release something maybe a bit less commercial to show off your depth, release a rehash of your old work to win back fans, but releasing your best material that you'll want to send to radio later almost always backfires -- it happened to OOTW, it happened to COTH, and it'll happen to many other artists who will have even their promo singles be widely heard. Even if you release it second like Sheehan did with COTH, it's still gonna be old news to most people and the GP's demand isn't going to be where you want it to be when it matters most as they'll have already heard the song and it'll be old news.

"OOTW" was a sixth single. The idea that it under-performed because it was a pre-release track never really stood up as an argument for me. The GP wasn't tired of OOTW, they were tired of Taylor.
And "COTH" went top 10 at pop fighting against "Shape Of You" which would not die (and still isn't dead). I don't think it underperformed, I think it overperformed given the circumstances.
We want to talk about instant grat tracks taking off, let's talk about "Dark Horse" for a second. That being a pre-release track got the general public and radio schooling Katy on what needed to be a single and kept that era from completely going off the rails.

I never had to go flying into scroll mode faster than the last few pages. Even though I much rather prefer not to admit this because her stans are something else but the song has grown on me courtesy of the video.
I'm not saying its a good song but for her it's not bad. It's a few notches below bad blood but a notch better than that horrid shake it off. I dont think I can ever root for her like I do now for Katy because her personality and music is so robotic and cold but I don't think that matters if she can release a good hook and somewhat mature lyrics on her next song. Better effort next sweety.
Maybe if she reads a book or reach out to the Hillary Clinton camp we can finally get a world affairs song or two instead of the petty shenanigans of her vapid life.

If you want an example of exactly the kind of sexist double standard Taylor is dealing with, this is a decent one. I know, I know -- this will be written off as an over dramatic Taylor stan being "the worst" -- instead of calling out that statement for what it accurately is.

You just couldn't let a post go by without the need to comment. Calling out ONE woman who has vapid lyrics hardly constitutes as sexism especially when if this was the Jason Derulo thread I would have called his ass as vapid and trash too!. Now let me go flying outta the circle jerk dream thread you created for yourself but I'm not the one. Do better, sweety.

We don't criticize male pop stars for not releasing political songs or for writing songs about their exes, or trivializing the experiences behind their art as petty shenanigans.
I don't need to circlejerk the thread or make a thesis out of it. The point stands for itself.

Is sexism in pop music or life an issue, sure! But that's a whole different argument that deserves a serious discussion not just some Taylor Swift fan picking and isolating small parts of posts that don't support Taylor and then using a serious issue as a way of conveniently shutting down and dismissing anything not positive. One you used it fraudulently. Two it was a disingenuous backdoor low handed approach by you and three this thread nor every comment made needs a rebuttal from your ass and four you don't know me to make such claims! . If you want to have a serious conversation about sexism please open a thread in YOP and I would be glad to participate and support you but if that's your way of shutting down non positive chatter then you learned from your queen herself on how to frame serious issues as a way of furthering your point!

Or maybe a song about her best friend's husband who texts 'selfies' to strange women with their child in pictures. Interesting according to NYT, the Clintons never condemned that man's actions. Glass houses, but definitely not an advocate for women. I'd Absolutely LOVE Taylor to write a song based on a woman like that. It's ridiculous to want our pop stars to be political (but only if it's left-centric). They should focus on what they on talent with which they were blessed - sing, write, dance or whatever - that's all that matters to me.

Can we stop dragging this thread into the depths of unnecessary political drama? If you want to bitch and moan about politics, go to the News & Entertainment board to do that, I'm sure people will agree with you there, don't drag that shit onto here.
