PS: Has anyone noticed a backlash to the backlash beginning to occur? Already? It took Nickelback's backlash nearly ten years to get its own backlash. I don't expect Taylor's backlash to get its own backlash for at least a few months at least. Her backlash has to be inescapable and as of now, it's still pretty mute.

spaceykSVP1999 I don't know what you think you're crowing about; not only was this entirely expected but it's also most likely just a one day thing and it'll resume spin gains as early as tomorrow. Swish swish back over to the Katy Perry thread before you embarrass yourself any further. Oh honey, her singles were just as tragic, but at least "Chained To The Rhythm" was good. I post about Taylor because I stanned Red and 1989.

Castle on the hill has been very successful. It is nearing 800k in sales, has kept the album consistently selling 10k a week, and is almost at 35 weeks on the hot 100. Shape of you is currently the best selling song of the year, and was massive, just because castle on the hill hasn't met those achievements doesn't mean it underperformed.

And Castle on the hill had to deal with the fact that it was promoted at the same time that monster. If it was released as a proper second single probably it would do even better, but did it's job anyway (i suppose Ed is going to release a third single soon). Frankly Taylor's backlash is pretty tiresome. If she breaths there's always a bunch of people ready to feel outraged

Shape of you is currently the best selling song of the year, and was massive, just because castle on the hill hasn't met those achievements doesn't mean it underperformed.Well, going back to the singles from his last album, "COTH" is his lowest performing single at Top 40 radio and on the Hot 100 in terms of its actual chart run (i.e. not the debut week). To that end it did under perform since it's only a second single and his status/momentum has risen since the start of that era. "OOTW" was a sixth single. The idea that it under-performed because it was a pre-release track never really stood up as an argument for me. The GP wasn't tired of OOTW, they were tired of Taylor. And "COTH" went top 10 at pop fighting against "Shape Of You" which would not die (and still isn't dead). I don't think it underperformed, I think it overperformed given the circumstances. We want to talk about instant grat tracks taking off, let's talk about "Dark Horse" for a second. That being a pre-release track got the general public and radio schooling Katy on what needed to be a single and kept that era from completely going off the rails. In regards to "COTH," other singles have managed to do better despite another single by the same artist still doing well (see Justin Bieber with multiple top 10s at once, etc). More so I am not sure three examples are enough to go off in this discussion. Is Ed releasing a third single?

Sorry but Taylor is not like Nickelback.Even during Nickelback's successful era's they had a lot of haters. Most people love Taylor Swift. Not fair to compare Taylor to Nickelback. Taylor is on another level.

I fail to see how it's an underperform when it has sold as much as some of the years biggest hits and has helped his album to be the top selling album of the year.

I really like "Ready For It"! The prechorus is very Taylor sounding. The rest is pretty catchy. My only part I'm not huge on is the small drop during the chorus but it's very short so i'm sure I will get over it. 2 for 2 with me this era so far!

I've said it before: if you're a big name star and you're gonna release an anticipated promo single before the album, DO NOT RELEASE SOMETHING YOU'LL WANT TO SEND TO RADIO LATER. Maybe release something maybe a bit less commercial to show off your depth, release a rehash of your old work to win back fans, but releasing your best material that you'll want to send to radio later almost always backfires -- it happened to OOTW, it happened to COTH, and it'll happen to many other artists who will have even their promo singles be widely heard. Even if you release it second like Sheehan did with COTH, it's still gonna be old news to most people and the GP's demand isn't going to be where you want it to be when it matters most as they'll have already heard the song and it'll be old news. I worry about this with Kesha's promo singles. "Woman" and "Learn To Let Go" would both be great single choices but they already even have music videos out...

This new Taylor song is a mess. Sounds like something that would have dropped when "Dark Horse" came out. Or when everyone was trying to be hip and cool with dubstep.
I hope the album sounds nothing like this.
You ain't a rapper, boo.

It's making Look what you made me do lose some momentum. It was off to one of the best starts of any song ever but releasing the new song takes away some of the momentum. Look what you made me do was like 80 percent ahead of the song ar #2 the last few days, now the new song is 50 percent ahead of Look what you made me do on itunes.

I think people lose sight of what's really important to the label and the $$$ maker. They are looking to shift albums... singles are meant to shift the album. If they can get 2 #1s out of it, then that's a cherry on top. But they want to maximize the sales of this album and hype it up.

It'd be amazing if "Ready for It" somehow hit #1 on the Hot 100.

Not sure why some are worried about erosion to the first song.

Unlike OOTW I wouldn't say it flopped -- however I would call it an underperformance. Granted SOY was a hard song to follow up, but COTH only peaked at #9 on CHR and fell pretty quickly after peaking, following SOY which spent many weeks at #1 and had great longevity, and during its CHR run (as opposed to its initia debut when it debuted at #6) it only barely scraped the teens on the hot 100, which is the lowest a Sheeran single has peaked since his debut.

Chill guys! Promotional singles are not meant to hurt the actual single or the artist, if anything it even boosts the sales/streams by increasing the artist in popularity. As @au$tin stated, this is exactly what is happening.

You can't erode performance of a song with like a hundred million radio impressions and a video with a promo single.

I'd say the primary purpose of COTH was to offset any potential damage Shape Of You could have had on longtime fans. While Shape was an obvious hit, it was still at the expense of fans who prefer his acoustic side. COTH softened that blow and let fans relax on it a bit (this is putting it simply). I would say COTH served its exact purpose perfectly. Not everything needs to go to number one for it to be a resounding success.

Release a hit worthy track along with something for the fans so they aren't completely taken back by the more "crafted for success" song. Lorde's "Liability" comes to mind immediately, showcasing the minimalist style wasn't completely gone. Kesha's "Woman" was a toss back to her fun party days. And now Taylor is doing it. Releasing a song that isn't so tongue-in-cheek to offset the almost parody-like lead.

I haven't posted in a while, so I'll quickly share my thoughts on video and era so far. The video was a clear high budget, Gaga-like effort which could clearly take the crown of best video of the year. Seems there was a lot of attention to every single detail, which made it an event. At the same time, I had an uncomfortable feeling after watching it 4 times, which is making me like her less than during the 1989 era. And I have to say that I've been a fan of her since Love Story, and 1989 is among my favorite albums of the decade. I do feel something off. The message is confusing and dubious IMO, like blaming everyone else for stuff she's done instead of owning it, which looks quite hypocritical. Blaming the media for uncovering her own lies is not a good look to me. At the same time the imagery of the video has a dark undertone that I'm not a big fan of. I'm sure the anti-Illuminati webpages will have a great day uncovering the symbolism of snakes, dead Taylor, mind manipulation, cat faces and stuff like that. Don't get me wrong, I do like some dark stuff like the Paparazzi-Bad Romance-Telephone trilogy, but I felt that transition was better rolled out and easier on the eye than this one, even when BR had some uncomfortable imagery as well. I did love the final minute or so of the video, after the latex scene. Beyond that, the song has gotten better with each listen and the chorus does get stuck in your head. Still don't think it's among her best and would rank it around #15 among her singles to date. The new song? Mmmm... it sort of reminded me of when Madonna did American Life chorus is good enough but the whole rapping part is :-xx so it does continue with the "parody" of the first single instead of showing more of her stronger type of pop material. Katy Perry had a stronger attitude to pull her Dark Horse and ET stuff off and Taylor sounds like a try-hard Becky. Even Fergie sounded more authentic with her rapping than Taylor. Kudos to her for switching things up, but I just wish the switch had not been to this singing rapping stuff that is somewhat laughable to me... Will keep checking her stuff out though, with hopes that the album will be good.
