It actually bothers me quite much how everybody views the records as being Mariah's. The record was never hers, it was shared by her and Boyz 2 Men (who have more 10wk+ number ones than she does) . Now it is shared by luis fonsi, daddy yankee, and justin bieber as well. Stop calling it Mariah's record.

But if you consider that they have more 10wks+ number ones, can we also consider that she has more 8wk+ number ones than they do, or that they got only 4 #1 during the 90's while Mariah got fucking 14 #1 during that same decade? :|   IMO she was a more reliable guarantee to get a number 1 than they were - I think it would be more relevant to acknowledge that before discussing the longevity of their number one hits. By the way, wasn't OSD crafted for Mariah's Daydream album? In a way, it makes it more her song than theirs from my pov. |

That does not make One Sweet Day a Mariah song or more of a Mariah song than that other group.
One Sweet Day was co-written by Mariah and Boyz II Men, so they SHARE credit at the writing level too.

"OSD" also didn't get the benefit of chart weeks climbing to #1 because of chart rules at the time. It had top 2 airplay before it ever debuted, so under the late 90s chart rules it would have debuted earlier and added extra weeks to its chart run. Additionally, my understanding is the commercial single was deleted at a certain point, so that also led to its somewhat quick descent. Additionally, its airplay at R&B radio didn't count toward its Hot 100 run; so, again, under current chart rules it would have had even better airplay because of its multi-format success. It might have had more weeks at #1, or at least more weeks on the chart under current rules. In other words, there are a lot of factors. You nailed it. Mariah's record company stopped shipping OSD singles to focus on the 10x platinum album. The song could have been #1 20 weeks probably. The point is more that there are always a lot of factors with every song's chart run, and while the speculation can be fun, it's ultimately just that...speculation. At the end of the day, both "One Sweet Day" and "Despacito" were #1 for 16 weeks, and they share the record. I will note that the week "OSD" hit 16 weeks at #1, the Hot 100 column noted its lack of challengers and essentially predicted a 17th week at #1. It then fell to #5 the next week. I'd imagine (so again, speculation) that was due to Sony stopping making the commercial single, and thus sales fell harder than predicted. |

^Yeah, so my prediction that Attention would reach #1 in radio audience came true. If Look What You Made Me Do doesn't get much of a correction from today's airplay in tomm, it could end up as high as #5 in Radio Songs next week.

It was an understandable tactic at the time, but in the long run I think all the album filler you had to purchase to get a single song helped kill sales as well.

Also sorry for the double post but I still think not enough attention is being given to the fact that we have ANOTHER record IN PROGRESS right now. And not a tied record either, Shape Of You just got the 33rd week in the top 10 and nobody's been talking at all about whether or not it's gonna stay in the top 10 or what. All you peeps complaining about a tied record really should be focusing more on this because it just broke the tied record between Closer and How Do I Live. I know it's being knocked down by one spot by Taylor but beyond that is Strip That Down, Rake It Up, or Bank Account a challenger?

At the same time, nothing has been within a week of the record for weeks at #1 (much less tied it) in the past 21 years. So, that alone makes the #1s record more notable. Plus, in general people/media are more hyped about #1s than weeks in the top 10. That is only to give an explanation. It's obviously truly impressive that "Shape of You" has been able to stay in the top 10 for 8 months now. |

I would think that Stay is more Zedd's single than Alessia's Then you would be wrong, because they get equal billing. If acts get equal billing, then they split equally. It's not a difficult concept to understand. Everything else people have been going on about (who had more hits, what was on who's album, etc.) is worthless stan semantics. |
