Despacito -4.5 million AI today. I don't like the song, but I feel bad for the way radio is dropping it. Good riddance tbh.

Despacito -4.5 million AI today. I don't like the song, but I feel bad for the way radio is dropping it. If it was an American song it wouldn't lose 40+ million airplay in three weeks. So now there's "discrimination" against a song that was #1 all summer? Reaching like this makes it hard for people to speak up when an actual slight has occurred. It was #1 all summer on the Hot 100. I'm talking about radio. People love the song as you can see on the Hot 100, Streaming Charts, Digital Sales Chart. It seems like radio programmers don't think the same. I'm fine with Despacito falling on the Hot 100, I Just don't feel like it should be losing 4.5M AI on radio compared to other hits that weren't as huge as Despacito is/was losing just 1-2 million. Also, it was #1 on radio, but it's ridiculous that Don't Wanna Know had 3 more weeks at #1 than Despacito. In my opinion, airplay shouldn't account for 30+% of the Hot 100 points as it doesn't reflect people taste as much as streaming/sales.

Prediction for Despacito's coming weeks: 2-4-6-8-out of Top 10
It's falling so quickly I think it might actually not be #1 on the YE chart

How quickly did "See You Again" lose impressions? See You Again: 2.0-2.5M per day Despacito: 3.0-3.5M per day And, of course, Despacito is a much bigger hit than SYA. Look how slowly Closer, SOY, That's What I Like, etc. fell compared to Despacito. I don't think it's just because Despacito was released in January, it has something to do with Despacito being a Spanish language song. The same thing happened in the VMAs. I have yet to see any evidence to support this theory. Despacito is not the only huge song that tumbled in airplay the moment it peaked.

If Despacito is not "American", what country is it?

Look at the numbers of the other huge songs (Over the past 5 years, Closer, Uptown Funk, Shape Of You are the only ones that are Despacito-level) and tell me a song that lost 30-35% of its audience impressions in three weeks. Despacito Aug. 26 - 134.6M airplay Sep. 2 - 120M airplay Sep. 9 - 105M airplay Sep. 16 - 85-90M airplay I'm done with this discussion.

You mean the same programmers who made it #1 on Radio Songs for 5 weeks? It's not uncommon for songs to do better/worse at radio as compared to sales and streaming. Is "Despacito" having less longevity at radio than some other big #1s? Yes. But it's not like it was shut out at radio. And again, it's common in most if not all countries for songs sung in a language other than the official language of that country to do worse.

Despacito is falling hard in radio not so much because it's Spanish-language but because it has limited play on Adult formats, which tend to keep songs floating around for longer. Many R&B/Hip-hop songs (when those songs were huge on radio), and more uptempo/dance/rhythmic songs or other songs that otherwise don't get huge AC play have had similar precipitous falls after their peaks, especially songs that get well over 100 mil, because percentage-wise a 10% reduction in audience for a song that is at 150 mil is going to be more than a 10% loss for a song that peaked with 40 mil. A 15-20 million weekly audience loss isn't at all very uncommon.

Personally I blame Despacito's intense fall on Bieber, Friends is being pushed pretty hard right now. And let's not forget I'm The One and 2U have some airplay left.
The public is sick of Bieber, and I bet Despacito would have a better time at radio if Bieber didn't over saturate it with 85 songs.

www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/7949833/taylor-swift-look-what-you-made-me-do-biggest-sales-weekTaylor Swift's 'Look' Could Land Biggest Weekly Sales & Streams This Year on Way to No. 1 on Billboard Hot 1008/31/2017 by Gary Trust Her return single is set to soar in atop the Streaming Songs & Digital Song Sales charts. Taylor Swift's new single, "Look What You Made Me Do," should blast to No. 1 on next week's Billboard Hot 100 chart (dated Sept. 16) with the highest weekly sales, and possibly the top streaming total, for any song in 2017. Highlights of the chart will post on Billboard.com on Tuesday, Sept. 5 (a day after the Labor Day holiday). Following a first chart week of sales and streaming data tracking (Aug. 25-31), after its Aug. 25 arrival, the first single from Swift's album Reputation, due Nov. 10, could sell upwards of 400,000 downloads in its first week. That would roar past the current high for 2017: 240,000 (according to Nielsen Music), set by Ed Sheeran's "Shape of You" when it bowed atop the Hot 100 and Digital Song Sales charts dated Jan. 28. "Look" should also launch at No. 1 on Streaming Songs with more than 60 million U.S. streams in the tracking week, challenging for the top weekly sum this year. Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee's "Despacito," featuring Justin Bieber, boasts the current top streaming frame of 2017: 69.6 million (June 17). Fueling the first-week streaming totals for "Look," its lyric video arrived Aug. 25 and its official clip posted Aug. 27 following its premiere during that night's MTV Video Music Awards. "Look" could also surpass the all-time top weekly streaming sum for a song by a woman: Adele's "Hello" leads with 61.6 million in its debut week (Nov. 14. 2015). "Look" should additionally rank in the top 15 on the Radio Songs chart with more than 50 million in all-format airplay audience. (The Hot 100 measures airplay on a Monday-Sunday schedule, while streams and sales cover a Friday-Thursday period; thus, "Look" debuted at No. 77 on the Sept. 9-dated chart from its first three days of airplay.) With those projected totals, "Look" appears set to dethrone "Despacito," which this week, on the Sept. 9-dated Hot 100, logged its record-tying 16th week at No. 1, matching Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men's "One Sweet Day," which reigned for 16 weeks in 1995-96, for the longest rule in the Hot 100's 59-year history. Check back Tuesday, Sept. 5, for your first look at Swift's likely leap to No. 1 on the Hot 100 and its finalized lofty sales, streaming and airplay totals for the week.

BTW its nice to see Mariah's record to continue to endure.

Would that actually reflect their popularity? Despacito feels like a bigger cultural event than Shape of You, which was a huge song but few songs actually reach the level of dominance Despacito had. It's taking Taylor Swift and record breaking numbers to take it down even after 16 weeks at #1...
Even if it fell from the chart within the next month, does that cancel the record breaking run it just had? People tried to do that with Hello, when it fell from the chart in under 30 weeks, but did that actually negate it's record breaking first few weeks? (which meant everyone knew the song already by week 10 and no one really needed to buy it by week 20, resulting in a shorter than usual chart run).
And this is coming from someone who prefers Shape of You by a long-shot and would love to see it take #1.

Think about it like this; in 1996 OSD spent 16 weeks at #1, but fell off after less than 30 weeks. The Macarena spent 14 weeks at #1, but it took a long ass time to climb to #1, and stayed on for 60+ weeks. OSD was the 2nd biggest song of '96, and The Macarena was the biggest of '96. However they both flipped positions on the decade end list, and yet The Macarena is in the top 10 on Billboard's All Time Greatest chart.
I think that Shape Of You will be the biggest song of 2017, because of it's insane chart longevity, and Despacito will be the 2nd biggest because of the weeks it logged at #1. And I wouldn't be that surprised if Despacito was the #1 of the decade, while Shape Of You is somewhere in the top 10, or top 5 most likely. It'll be like 1996 all over again, at least that's what I think could happen, but we'll have to wait and see.

Mariah Carey fans want Taylor Swift to unseat 'Despacito' as No. 1 song Look what you made Mariah fans do Thatiana Diaz Posted on August 31, 2017 at 7:03pm EDT
If you haven’t already heard, “Despacito” by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee featuring Justin Bieber now ties Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men’s 1995 smash hit “One Sweet Day” as the longest running No. 1 song on the charts at 16 weeks. The Spanish-language track has been topping charts and breaking records — such as most-watched video on YouTube — all summer long, but now people are calling for the “Despacito” frenzy to end. If the song makes it just one more week at the top of the Hot 100 chart, it will take the throne as the longest-running No. 1 song of all time, and Mariah Carey fans are not happy. They are subsequently rooting for Taylor Swift’s newest song “Look What You Made Me Do” to reach the top of the charts to end the “Despacito” streak.
Fans of Carey anxiously awaited the release of T.Swift’s “LWYMMD” and since it dropped, they’ve urged people to stream the song as much as possible. “All fandoms must unite to stop Despacito from breaking Mariah’s record by buying and streaming Taylor Swift’s new song,” tweeted one user.
Swift’s song is already breaking records, garnering the most YouTube global streams in a span of 24 hours, according to Billboard. The music video received over 30,000 views a minute on its first day. It also set records on Spotify for its first 24 hours, and according to Nielsen it was the most-played song on U.S. radio last Friday with 4,228 plays.

"OSD" also didn't get the benefit of chart weeks climbing to #1 because of chart rules at the time. It had top 2 airplay before it ever debuted, so under the late 90s chart rules it would have debuted earlier and added extra weeks to its chart run. Additionally, my understanding is the commercial single was deleted at a certain point, so that also led to its somewhat quick descent. Additionally, its airplay at R&B radio didn't count toward its Hot 100 run; so, again, under current chart rules it would have had even better airplay because of its multi-format success. It might have had more weeks at #1, or at least more weeks on the chart under current rules. In other words, there are a lot of factors.

I know that Shape Of You is really overrated, but Despacito's OVERRATEDNESS is really, really sick, and because of that (and because it's so much better song) i would like to see Shape Of You at #1.

Mariah's record company stopped shipping OSD singles to focus on the 10x platinum album. The song could have been #1 20 weeks probably.
