LCD Soundsystem Earns First No. 1 Album on Billboard 200 Chart With 'American Dream'
LCD Soundsystem achieves its first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart, as American Dream arrives atop the list. The set earned 85,000 equivalent album units in the week ending Sept. 7, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 81,000 were in traditional album sales. The album was released on Sept. 1 and is the act’s first new studio effort in more than seven years, and first for Columbia Records.
The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new Sept. 23-dated chart (where American Dream debuts at No. 1) will be posted in full on Billboard's websites on Tuesday (Sept. 12).
LCD Soundsystem, led by James Murphy, last released a studio set in 2010, when This Is Happening debuted and peaked at No. 10 on the list (its then-highest ranking effort). American Dream is the act’s third charting title -- LCD’s second studio effort, Sound of Silver, reached No. 46 in 2007.
American Dream’s debut benefits from a concert ticket/album bundle sale redemption promotion in association with the act’s U.S. upcoming tour. Other No. 1 albums in 2017 that have profited from such an offer include Arcade Fire’s Everything Now, The Chainsmokers’ Memories… Do Not Open and Katy Perry’s Witness.
LCD Soundsystem is the third act in a row to notch its first No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, following Lil Uzi Vert a week ago (with Luv Is Rage 2) and Brand New (Science Fiction, on the Sept. 9-dated list). Other acts that collected its first leaders in 2017 include Lorde, Halsey, Bryson Tiller and Logic. The last time the chart housed three first-timers in-a-row at No. 1 was a little more than two years ago, when seven acts notched their first No. 1s in succession. Between the June 20 and Aug. 8, 2015-dated lists, Florence + The Machine, Muse, James Taylor, Breaking Benjamin, Meek Mill, Tyrese and Future all snagged their first chart toppers.
LCD Soundsystem leads a rather quiet top 10, as American Dream is the only debut in the region. At No. 2, Lil Uzi Vert’s Luv Is Rage 2 slips a rung in its second week, with 73,000 units (down 46 percent). XXXTentacion’s 17 falls 2-3 in its second week with 51,000 units (down 41 percent) while Kendrick Lamar’s former No. 1 DAMN. is up a spot to No. 4 with 40,000 units (down 12 percent). Khalid’s American Teen (8-5) benefits from a lack of competition in the top 10, as even though the album is down 1 percent in units (33,000 earned for the week) it climbs three spots to No. 5.
Imagine Dragons’ Evolve zooms 12-6 with 31,000 units (up 20 percent) and 13,000 copies sold (up 71 percent) after the set was sale-priced in the iTunes Store for $6.99. In terms of digital album sales, the set sold 9,000 copies (up 131 percent).
Kodak Black’s Project Baby Two climbs 9-7 on the Billboard 200 with 30,000 units (down 10 percent), while Logic’s Everybody returns to the top 10 (11-8) with 29,000 units (up 3 percent). It’s the album’s first week in the top 10 since the set opened at No. 1 on the list dated May 27. (In its second week on the list, the album fell straight out of the top 10.) The album has seen a surge in popularity following Logic’s performance of the set’s “1-800-273-8255” on the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards (Aug. 27), alongside the song’s featured guests, Alessia Cara and Khalid.
Closing out the new top 10 are SZA’s Ctrl (14-9 with a little more than 26,000 units; up 5 percent) and Ed Sheeran’s former No. 1 ÷ (Divide) (13-10 with 26,000 units; up 1 percent). Billboard Video

Luke Combs’s This One’s for You rebounds from No. 39 to No. 23 in its 14th week. The album debuted and peaked at No. 5. The album returns to No. 1 on Top Catalog Albums, after being bumped out last week by Taylor Swift’s 1989. Curtain Call has topped the catalog chart in three of the last five weeks. It has sold 4,176,000 copies in traditional album sales. The Script’s Freedom Child debuts at No. 58, breaking a string of three consecutive top 20 albums by the Irish band. The album fares much better on the other side of the Atlantic. It enters the Official U.K. Albums Chart at No. 1. It’s the Script’s fourth No. 1 album on that chart. Coming Attractions: Thomas Rhett’s Life Changes appears headed for No. 1 next week. The National’s Sleep Well Beast, Jack Johnson’s All The Light Above It Too and Dustin Lynch’s Current Mood are also on track for top 10 debuts.

Of that sum, 81,000 were in traditional album sales. American Dream was the only debut in the top 10, and the only new arrival in the top 40 (more on that in a moment). The Billboard 200 chart ranks the week’s most popular albums based on their overall consumption. That overall unit figure combines pure album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). Now, let’s take a closer look at some of the action on the latest Billboard 200 chart: — LCD Soundsystem, American Dream – No. 1 — Not only does the band claim its first No. 1, but it does so with its best sales week ever (81,000) and the second-largest sales week for a vinyl album in 2017. The vinyl LP version of American Dream starts at No. 1 on the Vinyl Albums chart, selling 16,000 copies. The only larger week logged by a vinyl set this year was when Queens of the Stone Age’s Villains started with 18,000 just a week ago. — Logic, Everybody – No. 8 — Logic’s Everybody returns to the top 10 (11-8) for the first time in four months, as the album climbs with 29,000 units (up 3 percent) earned in the latest tracking week. It’s the set’s first week in the top 10 since the set opened at No. — Portugal. The Man, Woodstock - No. 37 — Portugal. The Man’s Woodstock returns to the top 40 for the first time since its debut frame (July 8, No. 32) as its hit single “Feel It Still” continues to grow in popularity. The album climbs 9 percent in equivalent album units earned in the week ending Sept. 7, rising to 12,000 (up 1,000). Meanwhile, the track -- which has topped both the Adult Alternative Songs and Alternative Songs tallies -- hikes 20-18 on the Billboard Hot 100 and 16-13 on Pop Songs. — The Script, Freedom Child – No. 58 — Strikingly, The Script earns the chart’s second-highest debut of the week, as Freedom Child bows at No. 58 with 9,000 units. It’s the fifth charting set for the band, and follows 2014’s No Sound With Silence, which debuted and peaked at No. 10. Notably, as The Script logs the chart’s second highest debut -- and that arrival is way down at No. 58 -- that means there’s only one debut in the top 40 (LCD Soundsystem’s American Dream at No. 1). The top 40 hasn’t been this empty of debuts since the Jan. 21-dated list, when zero titles bowed in the top 40 (reflecting the tracking week ending Jan. 5, a normally slow time for new releases). Further, the chart hasn’t had this few debuts in the region outside of the post-Christmas season since the Dec. 19, 2015, list, when Erykah Badu’s But You Caint Use My Phone was the only new arrival (No. 14). — Steve Winwood, Winwood: Greatest Hits Live – No. 62 — The former chart-topping artist (Roll With It, 1988) notches his 13th entry, and first of the 2010s. He last charted with Eric Clapton on the collaborative set Live From Madison Square Garden in 2009 (No. 14). — Steely Dan, A Decade of Steely Dan – No. 122 — Steely Dan’s 1985 greatest-hits compilation A Decade of Steely Dan debuts on the Billboard 200 as fans remember the duo’s late Walter Becker, who died on Sept. 3. The hits package arrives at No. 122 with 6,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending Sept. 7, according to Nielsen Music (up 449 percent). In total for the week, Steely Dan’s album sales grew 634 percent to 11,000 copies sold. Its best-selling title for the week was Decade, with a little over 2,000 sold, followed by its highest-charting album on the Billboard 200, Aja, with 2,000 sold. Aja peaked at No. 3 in 1977 and is one of five top 10-charting sets for the act. The album garnered Steely Dan its first Grammy Award nomination for album of the year. In terms of digital song sales, Steely Dan’s catalog of tunes sold 22,000 downloads in the latest tracking week (up 656 percent). Its top-selling song was “Reelin’ In the Years,” with nearly 3,000 sold. In terms of overall on-demand streams (audio and video combined), the act collected 9.76 million clicks (up 233 percent). — Boney James, Honestly - No. 125 — Boney James nabs his 11th entry on the Billboard 200, as he debuts at No. 125 with Honestly (6,000 units). It also bows at No. 23 on Top Album Sales (5,000 sold) and No. 1 on Contemporary Jazz Albums. It’s the saxophonist’s ninth leader on the latter tally, putting him into a three-way tie (with Dave Koz and Fourplay) for the second-most No. 1s on the chart. Ahead of all of them? Kenny G, with a whopping 16 No. 1s.
