"I Saw God Today" is really good, but can't compete with George's classics. ISGT sounds very 'mainstream' I can't at Mr. Trash Taste accusing us high rankers of "I Saw God Today" as having basic taste

"I Saw God Today" is like one of George Strait's biggest classics though, so I'm not sure I understand that argument. It's easily like one of his Top 10 biggest/most remembered hits, lol.

That may have been a fairly uneventful elimination for most of us, but that is about to change. The next song has the highest standard deviation of the rankdown!! Which means that a whopping SIX of us are going to lose top 10s, including two top 3s!! It was on pace to be an easy top 10 at first, until people started tanking it and it dropped like a rock. It's a miracle it was even able to stay in the top 40... Some people are about to be VERY upset. I'm gonna take a break while I wait for more people to show, because this reveal deserves some fanfare! Feel free to predict which song will have the highest SD, up next! Just wanted to take a moment to point out that this particular post was littered with lyrical hints. "She's sleeping like a rock, my name on her wrist, wearing tiny pink socks..." "My brand new baby girl, she's a miracle..." "Had to take a break. I'd been by her side for 18 hours straight..." "Yeah, I couldn't help but notice she was starting to show..."

There’s one thing that we both agree. I like you, and baby, you like me. Let’s take our love one night at a time.

This song was also a super consistent performer, spending the majority of the submission process within the top 40. It didn't seem to get any hate, but it sure did receive a lot of love. This is the first elimination to take out TWO top 2s, unfortunately for BackwoodsBarbie and LBTrocks . fearlessarrow also loses another top 10 after losing his #2 with the last reveal.

I guess it pays to be disliked by nobody! Unfortunately for this song, it was not quite enough to push it into the top 30.

I know "One Night At A Time" isn't a standout for many, but for me it is one of the most BEAUTIFUL songs! I have always been obsessed with it. It's just gorgeous. I love the instrumentation, the vocal arrangement slays, and hell I even quite like the lyrics. Everything about it is perfection. I'm glad it made the top 40, but wish it could have done even better.

The whiskey kills the man you’ve turned me into And I come alive. I’m livin’ for the night.
32. "Living For The Night"
Album: Twang Year: 2009
Total: 809 Average: 40.45 Std Dev: 25.44 castleoblivion26 - 2 DistrictTwelve - 5 countrymusicjunkie - 5 tim - 16 George Strait Junkie - 17 sabre14 - 21 LBTrocks - 28 fearlessarrow - 32 BackwoodsBarbie - 32 bboat11 - 43 CoJoFan - 43 @adam1995 - 45 Cody Wants Out... - 46 Kanenrá:ke - 48 codyj100 - 52 mamasaid - 66 zaclord 🌈 - 67 .indulgecountry - 75 gardyfan - 78 carriekins - 88 This song is beautiful, especially lyrically, and it kills me that it did not manage to become a #1 hit for George. The fact that this song is rumored to have been written about his daughter who tragically passed away as a teenager, that he still doesn't like to talk about, totally adds a whole new layer of emotional depth to this already-emotional song. 3 people lose a top 5 here, including castleoblivion26's #2, and with this we also lose the final single from the Twang album. {Songs Remaining} All My Ex’s Live In Texas Amarillo By Morning Baby Blue Baby’s Gotten Good At Goodbye Blue Clear Sky Carried Away Carrying Your Love With Me Check Yes Or No Fool Hearted Memory Give It Away Heartland I Can Still Make Cheyenne I Got A Car I Hate Everything If I Know Me It Just Comes Natural Living And Living Well Love Without End, Amen Marina Del Rey Ocean Front Property Run She Let Herself Go She’ll Leave You With A Smile The Chair The Cowboy Rides Away Today My World Slipped Away Troubadour True Write This Down You Know Me Better Than That You Look So Good In Love

I easily could've placed "Living for the Night" in my top 10. The line "I'm a whole lot easier to talk to, when I've had a few, I settle down" has always been my favorite from the song.
To be completely honest (and #70 fan note), this song came out during what I'd describe as a very dark time in my life. I don't touch whiskey anymore to say the least. I listened to this song over and over and over...and then some more. It is still painful to listen to this day, but it reminds me of a time that I'm happy to say I dug myself out of. I also just really effing love sad songs, so there's that lol.

After she packed, when she looked back There were no tears in her eyes. And that’s got me worried, Thinkin’ maybe my baby’s gotten good at goodbye.
31. "Baby's Gotten Good At Goodbye"
Album: Beyond The Blue Neon Year: 1988
This is one of my very favorite George Strait songs from the '80s... I cannot believe it missed the top 30 > Towards the beginning of the submission process, this one looked like a sure lock for the top 20, but unfortunately it couldn't hang on. Still, it was destined to make the top 30 until Kanenrá:ke knocked it out... (And I do hold grudges, by the way... ) Anyway, this song is lyrically incredible, and the melody is that sneaky-catchy type, that reels you in without you even realizing it. @adam1995 is the latest to say goodbye to his #1 with this reveal. {Songs Remaining} All My Ex’s Live In Texas Amarillo By Morning Baby Blue Blue Clear Sky Carried Away Carrying Your Love With Me Check Yes Or No Fool Hearted Memory Give It Away Heartland I Can Still Make Cheyenne I Got A Car I Hate Everything If I Know Me It Just Comes Natural Living And Living Well Love Without End, Amen Marina Del Rey Ocean Front Property Run She Let Herself Go She’ll Leave You With A Smile The Chair The Cowboy Rides Away Today My World Slipped Away Troubadour True Write This Down You Know Me Better Than That You Look So Good In Love

I'm actually surprised to see "Baby's Gotten Good At Goodbye" make it this far...although would've been happier with a top 30 placement now!
Fun tidbit about this song...it came in during the final moments of the recording process for Beyond the Blue Neon and ended up knocking out a Dean Dillon song George had recorded for the album.

Album Spotlight: Honkytonkville
"Honk If You Honky Tonk"
This is one of those songs that I managed to hear somehow in 2003 when the album came out, and then when I found out several years later that it was not a hit I was absolutely SHOCKED. I figured it was one of his #1s! This song is super catchy, and silly, and definitely gimmicky, but still good enough to make the silliness acceptable. This should have been released to radio, no question, because it must have had quite a bit of buzz surrounding the release of the album for me to have heard it despite me knowing literally nothing about George at the time...
I thought for sure this was going to be a single off of Honkytonkville, but alas it was one of many stellar songs left as an album track. George ended up performing this one at the CMA's in 2003 so that may be a reason some thought this was actually a single of his...it was also one he included in his live shows and I think he actually might still perform it occasionally. George really gets into this song when he's performing it; he also changes the line "Me and Friday night go hand in hand Ice cold beer and a swingin' band" to "kickass band." Album Spotlight: Easy Come, Easy Go
"Without Me Around"
Tbh, this song has never been one that jumped out to me. This was submitted by somebody else (maybe tim ?). The chorus to this is definitely strong enough to get stuck in your head and make you want to listen again, but to me the verse melody has always seemed very clunky. I still like the song, but have never fallen in love with it.] That was me (I think it was #16 on my album tracks that I submitted)! I was only 10 when this album came out and yet this has always remained one of my favorite album tracks from it. I just love the emotion coming from George's voice in this Dean Dillon penned song. My favorite line also happens to be "But she knows damn well what she's getting out of" so maybe I just like that George cusses in a song haha.

Album Spotlight: Twang
Released: August 11, 2009 Label: MCA Nashville Producer: Tony Brown, George Strait Runtime: 42 min. 03 sec. Country Albums Chart: 1 Certification: Gold
Singles/Rankdown Placements: Living For The Night (32) Twang (92) I Gotta Get To You (76) The Breath You Take (89)
Average Rank: 72.25
Tracklist: 1. Twang 2. Where Have I Been All My Life 3. I Gotta Get To You 4. Easy As You Go 5. Living For The Night 6. Same Kind Of Crazy 7. Out Of Sight Out Of Mind 8. Arkansas Dave 9. The Breath You Take 10. He's Got That Something Special 11. Hot Grease And Zydeco 12. Beautiful Day For Goodbye 13. El Rey
Album Tracks: "Easy As You Go"
This is the hit that got away from this album, as this is a song that I hear George's fans clamor about more than just about any other song since "As Far As It Goes" on the Honkytonkville album. The portrayal of a high school romance, and getting pregnant on graduation night, and having to grow up too quickly for the sake of your new child, is well-crafted and sensitive while also unashamed of its theme. I have never been in love with it melodically, but it is easy to see why it resonated with so many people. "Where Have I Been All My Life"
This song where the narrator reflects back on his youth and how little he knew then compared to now is also a highlight on the album, which could have been a great message to release to radio. Lines about how mom and dad got old in a hurry, and how "What a Wonderful World" by Louis Armstrong brought a tear to his eye, etc. paint a very poignant and vivid lyrical picture about how important it is to enjoy the little things in life before it is too late. A very common theme, but very well done in this case. "Arkansas Dave"
Not exactly single-worthy, but this is one that George feels very passionate about because his son wrote it. It is one of those classic story songs that feels like it belongs in a long-gone era, similar to what Marty Robbins might have sang (like "El Paso", or "Big Iron"). "He's Got That Something Special"
This song has one of the most instantly accessible melodies on the album, and for that reason it has always stood out to me as one that could have been a big hit. "Beautiful Day For Goodbye"
This is just a classic George Strait song that you can't help but feel warm and familiar while listening to. The lyrical twist about how the weather is just so beautiful that there is nothing that could stop her leaving, whereas if it had been storming or something maybe should would have considered staying, is very well-written and fresh. This would have made an excellent single. "El Rey"
This song stands out because George sings in SPANISH!!!!!! That's right, this song is hispanic, and imo George does a pretty freaking incredible job with it. This sounds exactly like a mariachi song... It helps that I've studied Spanish so I know what he's saying, but even if you don't know what he's saying the song is catchy as heck. I would highly recommend checking it out. bboat11 @adam1995 Cody Wants Out... .indulgecountry codyj100 sabre14 George Strait Junkie zaclord 🌈 mamasaid castleoblivion26 DistrictTwelve countrymusicjunkie CoJoFan gardyfan carriekins fearlessarrow LBTrocks tim BackwoodsBarbie Kanenrá:ke

Album Spotlight: Beyond The Blue Neon
Released: February 6, 1989 Label: MCA Nashville Producer: Jimmy Bowen, George Strait Runtime: 29 min. 30 sec. Country Albums Chart: 1 Certification: Platinum Singles/Rankdown Placements:
Baby's Gotten Goot At Goodbye (31) What's Going On In Your World (82) Ace In The Hole (69) Overnight Success (99) Average Rank: 70.25 Tracklist:
1. Beyond The Blue Neon 2. Hollywood Squares 3. Overnight Success 4. Ace In The Hole 5. Leavin's Been Comin' (For A Long, Long Time) 6. Baby's Gotten Good At Goodbye 7. What's Going On In Your World 8. Angel, Angelina 9. Too Much Of Too Little 10. Oh Me, Oh My Sweet Baby Album Tracks: "Beyond The Blue Neon"
The title track to the album, this song features George getting experimental with saxophone! (You can hear it paired with the fiddle throughout the song). It may not sound terribly experimental now, but when this album was released, it was a pretty big deal that George was experimenting like this! "Hollywood Squares"
One of the most cheesy hooks of George's entire career, and I live for it. "I've got so many ex's, and owe so much, they oughta put me on Hollywood Squares"... Jesus Christ, it's like a dad joke in song-format! The song is so fun and energetic that you can't help but love it, despite the cheese factor. This definitely should have been a single! Imo it would have done much more for his career than "Overnight Success" did. "Leavin's Been Comin' (For A Long, Long Time)"
This is just a very solid ballad. I have always enjoyed the way George's voice sounds on this song, which helps it to be one of the standouts for me. "Too Much Of Too Little"
This is definitely my favorite ballad on the album. "I gave her too much of too little too long" is a fabulous and classic George hook, and the conversational lyrics between George and a bottle of alcohol are extremely poignant and full of wisdom. Throw in the melody, driven by random high notes that George handles deftly, and this is a clear standout from the album. "Oh Me, Oh My Sweet Baby"
Yet another fabulous hook! This one is almost as cheesy as "Hollywood Squares", in that George turns expressions of sadness, such as "Oh me", "Oh my", "Oh no", and "Hooowee" (not sure how to write that one...lol) into actual sentences. So when the chorus starts it sounds like he's starting to say an expression of sadness, but then the sentence keeps coming. And then the listener says, "Oh, I see what you did there." bboat11 @adam1995 Cody Wants Out... .indulgecountry codyj100 sabre14 George Strait Junkie zaclord 🌈 mamasaid castleoblivion26 DistrictTwelve countrymusicjunkie CoJoFan gardyfan carriekins fearlessarrow LBTrocks tim BackwoodsBarbie Kanenrá:ke

Diamond Rio also released this as a single in 1993; I think it ended up being a top 5 hit for them.
