I have been teasing this one for so long...it's time to finally start this puppy! This is going to be the most epic celebration of George Strait's career that anybody has ever seen. The man is a walking, talking legend. He has been releasing singles since 1981, when he burst onto the scene with his debut album, Strait Country. Since then he has released 97 singles, 60 of which went all the way to #1 on various country charts. And this is no boring-ass vanilla #1 streak either; listening to these songs, I would challenge anybody to tell me that he did not deserve to have that many #1s! In fact, when I first claimed a George Strait rankdown, it was only going to be his #1s... Ultimately, however, I could not limit us to just 60 songs. From the beginning of his career until 2012, George released 90 singles, and literally only 1 of them missed the top 20... His 7 singles since then have had waning success, but only because radio started phasing him out. Due to the overall commercial strength of his catalog, we simply HAVE to include them all. Several of his non-#1s are among the biggest country hits of all time! So, here they are! George's 97 solo singles, plus his #2 peaking duet with Kenny Chesney, and his 2 album tracks that climbed all the way into the top 40 due to unsolicited airplay giving us a grand total of 100 songs. The Songs:
1. Unwound2. Down and Out3. If Youโre Thinking You Want A Stranger (Thereโs One Coming Home)
4. Fool Hearted Memory5. Marina Del Rey6. Amarillo By Morning7. A Fire I Canโt Put Out8. You Look So Good In Love9. Right Or Wrong10. Letโs Fall To Pieces Together11. Does Fort Worth Ever Cross Your Mind12. The Cowboy Rides Away
13. The Fireman14. The Chair15. Youโre Something Special To Me16. Nobody In His Right Mind Wouldโve Left Her17. It Ainโt Cool To Be Crazy About You18. Ocean Front Property19. All My Exโs Live In Texas20. Am I Blue21. Famous Last Words Of A Fool22. Baby Blue23. If You Ainโt Lovinโ (You Ainโt Livinโ)24. Babyโs Gotten Good At Goodbye25. Whatโs Going On In Your World26. Ace In The Hole27. Overnight Success28. Love Without End, Amen29. Drinking Champagne30. Iโve Come To Expect It From You31. If I Know Me32. You Know Me Better Than That33. The Chill Of An Early Fall34. Lovesick Blues35. Gone As A Girl Can Get36. So Much Like My Dad37. I Cross My Heart38. Heartland39. When Did You Stop Loving Me40. Easy Come, Easy Go
41. Iโd Like To Have That One Back42. Lovebug43. The Man In Love With You44. The Big One45. You Canโt Make A Heart Love Somebody46. Adalida47. Lead On
48. Check Yes Or No
49. I Know She Still Loves Me50. Blue Clear Sky51. Carried Away52. I Can Still Make Cheyenne53. King Of The Mountain54. One Night At A Time55. Carrying Your Love With Me56. Today My World Slipped Away57. Round About Way58. I Just Want To Dance With You59. True60. We Really Shouldnโt Be Doing This61. Meanwhile62. Write This Down63. What Do You Say To That64. The Best Day65. Murder On Music Row (duet w/ Alan Jackson)* 66. Go On67. Donโt Make Me Come Over There And Love You68. If You Can Do Anything Else69. Run70. Living And Living Well71. Sheโll Leave You With A Smile72. Tell Me Something Bad About Tulsa73. Cowboys Like Us74. Desperately75. I Hate Everything76. Youโll Be There77. She Let Herself Go
78. The Seashores Of Old Mexico79. Texas* 80. Give It Away81. It Just Comes Natural82. Wrapped83. How โBout Them Cowgirls84. Shiftwork (duet w/ Kenny Chesney) 85. I Saw God Today86. Troubadour87. River Of Love88. Living For The Night89. Twang90. I Gotta Get To You91. The Breath You Take92. Here For A Good Time93. Loveโs Gonna Make It Alright94. Drinkinโ Man95. Give It All We Got Tonight96. I Believe97. I Got A Car98. Let It Go99. Cold Beer Conversation100. Goinโ Goinโ Gone* = Album track that peaked in the top 40 due to unsolicited airplay Preference Revealer, if anyone wants to use it!
I know that this is a huge list, and that it will be a serious undertaking if you want to participate. But I promise it will be worth it. I have completed my own list, and I can say that I would be happy with literally anything in my top 90 making it into the top 10! Granted, I am very possibly the biggest George Strait fan you have never met (sorry tim )... But still, George is the master of consistency, and I think that everybody could find something to like in many of his songs. Plus, most country fans probably already know the vast majority of his catalog even if they don't realize it, because they are all pretty much huge hits! Since this is such a large rankdown, I am setting the deadline for December 1! I want as many people as possible to participate in this! If you like country music, you NEED to do this, because George Strait's hit list is truly one of the most watershed achievements in all of country music history. There's so much time before this is due so I'll definitely be procrastinating on this one for awhile, but I am quite stoked for this!

excited to participate in this. Already have my list half done but need to listen to 37 songs that tbh I don't remember though I'm sure once I hear them will be like oh that song lol. Look forward to seeing how this plays out as I can already tell I'm gonna have songs I like as low as the 60's at least if not lower than that. So many great songs and I know my #1 has no prayer of making Top 10 but while I hope to be proven wrong hopefully it makes it far!

Always happy to participate for the World's Most Perfect Man....my late hubby used to just laugh and buy the tickets.
Thanks for the tag.
I had to put it on a spreadsheet....alphabetized it and have it broken into groups of 10...Party On!

I am listening to I Want To Dance With You at the moment for the CMA rankdown so I can as well do this rankdown since I started to get familiar with his songs and deadline is far away.

Oh and we can do album tracks for this as well right? Since he has such an incredibly long career, could we maybe do a Top 20 or something bigger instead? Or would a Top 10 still be the more manageable way to go? Just airing some very early thoughts.

I have been kinda on the fence regarding album tracks, because he just has so dang many of them that I am not sure if we would get any semblance of consistency between submissions. And even then they STILL might not have enough submissions to represent all of his best songs! But you are right that a top 20 could help with that. Tell you guys what, if anyone wants to submit an album track list, make it a top 20! I'll make decisions from there about how to highlight songs during the reveal, depending on how many people submit album tracks and whether there ends up being any consistency between lists

*pop poster coming to ruin country rankdowns* (I do think I'm one of the country-leaning pop posters but anyways)
I'll try sending a list for this since I have over 2 months plus I've always wanted to become more familiar with George Strait's music. I've pretty much liked what I've heard from him so far, so even though this will be a lot of work it'll be exciting for me (hopefully)!

Question though would collaborations with other artist and live tracks from live albums be allowed? Have a few songs that I would definitely include

I've pretty much liked what I've heard from him so far, so even though this will be a lot of work it'll be exciting for me (hopefully)! My suggestion for somebody who is mostly unfamiliar with George's music would be to go buy his 50 Number Ones cd right now, and then put it on repeat for the next couple weeks. (Or Spotify/Apple Music, whatever). Don't even look at the song list for this rankdown yet, just go familiarize yourself with his number ones cd. Then when you come back to this rankdown, you'll think, "Holy crap, I am already so familiar with a lot of these!" And that will give you a good starting point to start catching up on everything else Cause with a huge list of unfamiliar songs like this, it definitely helps to have a framework in your mind of which songs you love and how you would rank them, and then start filling in the gaps with the ones you don't know. Or you can just tackle the list however you want to. You're a grown damn man, and I won't tell you what to do

You can use any song that George Strait sings on, that is not included in this rankdown (You can include live versions of songs that are in this rankdown too, since you are not ranking the live versions for the purposes of the rankdown, so they might as well be considered album tracks if you enjoy them enough to feature them).

^No problem! I unfortunately have a lot of time at work, lol. It was incredibly hard. Some of those match ups in the preference revealed were criminally hard.

Especially considering how solid his hits are over pretty much his entire career. Like, how the heck am I supposed to vote between "The Chair" and "I Saw God Today"? The 30-year age gap just makes it that much harder!

Still need to play catch-up on a few rankdowns I promised myself I'd do. I'll try to get this one started in this coming week, though, since I know over half of this list already.
