"King of the Mountain" was ROBBED. That lyrical hook is a work of art. But it wasn't a big hit so I'm also not surprised.
"So Much Like My Dad" is a great song conceptually and I love the lyrics so much, but it isn't a song that I enjoy revisiting often. It's clever and heartbreaking, but I don't find a lot of replay value in it, so the 60s is the best I could give it in my ranks.

81. "So Much Like My Dad"
Album: Holding My Own My first reaction to all of you above who ranked this so low! Seriously though, I was not expecting to see this song leave so soon. I remember George mentioning that it took him quite a few tries to get this one right in the studio and he wanted to make sure he did the song justice. Y'all just ruined my day!

I expected "Lead On" to do much better. I can't believe such a great song was in the bottom 20, it's so much better than a lot of the songs that are still in.

This song had a pretty wide spread, with DistrictTwelve and @adam1995 both putting it in their top 15, and myself, CoJoFan , and BackwoodsBarbie all putting it in our bottom 5 or 6. Honestly, I was surprised this song got as much love as it did! It was trending just barely behind the midway point for the majority of the rankdown, but as the results averaged out it managed to fall back to #80. This has always been towards the bottom of George's hits for me, but mostly just because this style of song is something I don't particularly care for. Similar songs like "If You Ain't Lovin' (You Ain't Livin')" are also towards the bottom of the pile for me, even though they are theoretically well-done songs. {Songs Remaining} A Fire I Can’t Put Out Ace In The Hole Adalida All My Ex’s Live In Texas Amarillo By Morning Baby Blue Baby’s Gotten Good At Goodbye Blue Clear Sky Carried Away Carrying Your Love With Me Check Yes Or No Cold Beer Conversation Cowboys Like Us Desperately Does Fort Worth Ever Cross Your Mind Drinkin’ Man Easy Come, Easy Go Famous Last Words Of A Fool Fool Hearted Memory Give It All We Got Tonight Give It Away Go On Gone As A Girl Can Get Heartland Here For A Good Time How ‘Bout Them Cowgirls I Can Still Make Cheyenne I Cross My Heart I Got A Car I Gotta Get To You I Hate Everything I Just Want To Dance With You I Saw God Today I’d Like To Have That One Back I’ve Come To Expect It From You If I Know Me If You Ain’t Lovin’ (You Ain’t Livin’) If You Can Do Anything Else If You’re Thinking You Want A Stranger It Ain’t Cool To Be Crazy About You It Just Comes Natural Let’s Fall To Pieces Together Living And Living Well Living For The Night Love Without End, Amen Love’s Gonna Make It Alright Marina Del Rey Meanwhile Murder On Music Row Nobody In His Right Mind Would’ve Left Her Ocean Front Property One Night At A Time Right Or Wrong Round About Way Run She Let Herself Go She’ll Leave You With A Smile Texas The Best Day The Big One The Chair The Chill Of An Early Fall The Cowboy Rides Away The Fireman The Man In Love With You The Seashores Of Old Mexico Today My World Slipped Away Troubadour True Unwound We Really Shouldn’t Be Doing This What Do You Say To That When Did You Stop Loving Me Wrapped Write This Down You Can’t Make A Heart Love Somebody You Know Me Better Than That You Look So Good In Love You’ll Be There

Funny, Prime Country teases "Am I Blue" in between songs, but plays other songs of his instead.

I’d never gone to Tennessee To sing my songs and chase my dreams. Only Heaven knows just where I’d be If it wasn’t for Texas.

With this elimination, the first of 2 album tracks are eliminated from this rankdown! "Texas" charted at #35 on the Billboard country chart solely from unsolicited airplay, undoubtedly bolstered by Texas stations. Radio seemed to want this one to be a hit, but for the most part we disagreed with them, as this song was in the bottom 30 for most of the submission process. All 3 singles from the Somewhere Down In Texas album are still intact. Speaking of Somewhere Down In Texas, I have always been surprised that "Texas" was the song that got so much attention when the title track was a much better song. I suppose it's possible George downplayed "Somewhere Down In Texas" so people wouldn't think he was retiring, because I definitely remember people being worried about that when the album came out {Songs Remaining} A Fire I Can’t Put Out Ace In The Hole Adalida All My Ex’s Live In Texas Amarillo By Morning Baby Blue Baby’s Gotten Good At Goodbye Blue Clear Sky Carried Away Carrying Your Love With Me Check Yes Or No Cold Beer Conversation Cowboys Like Us Desperately Does Fort Worth Ever Cross Your Mind Drinkin’ Man Easy Come, Easy Go Famous Last Words Of A Fool Fool Hearted Memory Give It All We Got Tonight Give It Away Go On Gone As A Girl Can Get Heartland Here For A Good Time How ‘Bout Them Cowgirls I Can Still Make Cheyenne I Cross My Heart I Got A Car I Gotta Get To You I Hate Everything I Just Want To Dance With You I Saw God Today I’d Like To Have That One Back I’ve Come To Expect It From You If I Know Me If You Ain’t Lovin’ (You Ain’t Livin’) If You Can Do Anything Else If You’re Thinking You Want A Stranger It Ain’t Cool To Be Crazy About You It Just Comes Natural Let’s Fall To Pieces Together Living And Living Well Living For The Night Love Without End, Amen Love’s Gonna Make It Alright Marina Del Rey Meanwhile Murder On Music Row Nobody In His Right Mind Would’ve Left Her Ocean Front Property One Night At A Time Right Or Wrong Round About Way Run She Let Herself Go She’ll Leave You With A Smile The Best Day The Big One The Chair The Chill Of An Early Fall The Cowboy Rides Away The Fireman The Man In Love With You The Seashores Of Old Mexico Today My World Slipped Away Troubadour True Unwound We Really Shouldn’t Be Doing This What Do You Say To That When Did You Stop Loving Me Wrapped Write This Down You Can’t Make A Heart Love Somebody You Know Me Better Than That You Look So Good In Love You’ll Be There

I think I probably underranked "Texas" a bit only because it charted as an album cut; this song still comes on the radio now and again down here in the Lone Star State!
And because I drank too much wine last night I came up with this idea to do a running list of my favorite memories of George...so here's three more lol:
#97: My mom paid $20 at Blockbuster to get me the Pure Country movie cardboard display...I held on to it for a long time until I moved away I think.
#96: My first George Strait concert was in July, 1993, in Lincoln, Nebraska. I remember very little from this show, but I didn't like the rotating stage they used (I still don't like them to this day!).
#95: While reading the most recent issue of Country America, I saw an ad for George's new album Easy Come, Easy Go and it said "Now Available." My mom and I rushed to Wal-Mart only to find out there were still a couple weeks before its launch date (remember this is well before the days of the internet lol).

I admit I was a little shocked by this song's overall poor performance here. It was a bottom 10 contender for a little bit, but even when it wasn't it was almost dead set on the bottom 20! tim and sabre14 are the only ones to lose a bottom 10, while mamasaid , DistrictTwelve , and CoJoFan all take top 20 losses. The 3 of them are the only ones who put this song in the top 40, however. The majority of us seemed to place it between 50-70.

How long have I been a memory? I’ve gotta know for my own sanity. Tell me, when did you stop lovin’ me?

This is a super disappointing elimination to me. The Pure Country album is literally perfect, and almost every song on it is a 10/10 for me, including this one. It started out in the top 40 with my submission, and then fell for pretty much the entire submission process #77, where it finished, was its lowest point for the entire rankdown.
This one had a pretty low standard deviation, with only 1 bottom 10 vote from mamasaid and only 1 top 30 placement from George Strait Junkie, so most of you probably are not surprised to see this leave now. But to the few who ranked this as high as I did, this loss might hurt!

This has always felt like one of George's more underrated singles to me. I know I am one of the lower rankers for this, but I think this song is really good, and it is super catchy, and definitely sounds like a song that should have returned him to #1. Maybe it would have been better suited as a lead single. But "Living For The Night" was probably the right choice, as evidenced by the fact that this one is leaving before it. In fact, "Living For The Night" is now the last song remaining from the Twang album!
This song had a pair of bottom 10 ranks from mamasaid and fearlessarrow, but it's highest rank was only barely in sabre14's top 30.

Finally! I admit I did not make it a point to purchase this and is the only album by George I’ve never bought. I had really been looking forward to this when they announced it, however I didn’t think they chose the right album tracks to showcase on the box set. I was more disappointed that they didn’t include a booklet like they did with the first set and this just didn’t seem like a package worthy of honoring George’s career from 1996 to present. If they decide to release a box set spanning his entire career I’ll for sure make it a point to add that to my collection (would probably come in 2020 celebrating 40 years).

Kicking off the top 75, we lose another #1 single from the '80s. This song is short and sweet, but for whatever reason I have always found it to be a chore to listen to compared to the rest of George's catalog. I'd probably still rate this a 7/10, but tbh so much of his catalog is 10/10 for me that when this one comes on I'm always like "Okay what's next?" Lol.
Not everyone shares my opinion, however, as this song wipes out a top 20 for two people. This is the first top 20 loss for Kanenrá:ke , and the 3rd for mamasaid .

This kind of situation has to pass. This chance encounter has to be the last. To take it further, we would be remiss. We really shouldn’t be doin’ this.

This song was a #1 hit for George in 1998, but I am not really surprised to see it leaving now. I have always thought it has a more polarizing sound to it than most of George's other music. I have come to enjoy this song a lot more than I used to, but I definitely am not sad to see it go now. Submission-wise, this song was all over the place! It rose and fell over and over again before finally settling into a little bit of consistency in the 70s. sabre14 finally loses his #100 here, while 2 others also lose a bottom 5. On the flipside, fearlessarrow loses his first top 10, while castleoblivion26 loses his first top 20. {Songs Remaining} A Fire I Can’t Put Out Ace In The Hole Adalida All My Ex’s Live In Texas Amarillo By Morning Baby Blue Baby’s Gotten Good At Goodbye Blue Clear Sky Carried Away Carrying Your Love With Me Check Yes Or No Cold Beer Conversation Cowboys Like Us Desperately Does Fort Worth Ever Cross Your Mind Drinkin’ Man Easy Come, Easy Go Famous Last Words Of A Fool Fool Hearted Memory Give It All We Got Tonight Give It Away Go On Gone As A Girl Can Get Heartland Here For A Good Time How ‘Bout Them Cowgirls I Can Still Make Cheyenne I Cross My Heart I Got A Car I Hate Everything I Just Want To Dance With You I Saw God Today I’d Like To Have That One Back I’ve Come To Expect It From You If I Know Me If You Can Do Anything Else If You’re Thinking You Want A Stranger It Ain’t Cool To Be Crazy About You It Just Comes Natural Let’s Fall To Pieces Together Living And Living Well Living For The Night Love Without End, Amen Love’s Gonna Make It Alright Marina Del Rey Meanwhile Murder On Music Row Nobody In His Right Mind Would’ve Left Her Ocean Front Property One Night At A Time Right Or Wrong Round About Way Run She Let Herself Go She’ll Leave You With A Smile The Best Day The Big One The Chair The Chill Of An Early Fall The Cowboy Rides Away The Fireman The Seashores Of Old Mexico Today My World Slipped Away Troubadour True Unwound What Do You Say To That Wrapped Write This Down You Can’t Make A Heart Love Somebody You Know Me Better Than That You Look So Good In Love You’ll Be There

I remember “We Really Shouldn’t Be Doing This” being a fan favorite at the time and I think that’s partially why they went with it as a single; looking back I probably would’ve gone with “Why Not Now” and think it would’ve been a much bigger hit.

OMG that song literally just came on my shuffle while I was reading this!!! I agree that "Why Not Now" is a much better song, and sounds like a big hit. Either that one or "You Haven't Left Me Yet" would have probably been the best choices for a 3rd single.

Coming up next, we have our 3rd smallest standard deviation at #73!
There is also a tie between the next two songs. #72 is somebody's #100, but it also won the tie because it is in multiple peoples' top 10s!

I'm going to say it. I love all George's stuff, but his 80s stuff is THE BEST music he has! Do a lot of people feel like this?
