This album was one I never paid much attention to, I don't hate the singles from it but they're both lower in his discography for me (SMLMD #69, GAAGCG #86), thus I never really feel the need to listen to it. I actually only know "Trains Make Me Lonesome" off the top of my head and the other tracks are kinda a mystery to me. I've listened to the album a few times but I can't tell you about the rest.

When life deals out a surprise, Have a few surprises of your own. Don’t matter what you do, no matter where you go, You’ve got to have an ace in the hole.
69. "Ace In The Hole"
Album: Beyond The Blue Neon Year: 1989
Right on the heels of our first studio album loss, we wipe out another song from Beyond The Blue Neon, leaving that album with only 1 song left ("Baby's Gotten Good At Goodbye"). Unfortunately for mamasaid, this is another of those Texas Swing songs that so far nobody seems to hold in as high of regard as she does. She and gardyfan both lose a top 20 here. BackwoodsBarbie also loses a bottom 3. Overall this song was a fairly consistent performer in this rankdown. It was in the 60s and 70s for most of the submission process.

One Way sign: "If you're heading down a one way street, and you're not sure it's the way you want to go..." "She Lays It All On The Line": "Don't lay it all on the line for just one roll; you've got to have an ace in the hole."

I'm a little surprised to see this one out this early. I had thought that I'd be one of the lower rankings, but seems like I was more middle.

The next song might be a shock to some. I must admit I was dying when I saw so many low rankings flooding in for this one! I never would have foreseen that happening. I figured this would be one that nobody would dislike, even if not many people put it among their favorites... Like, I figured it would be around the top 40 with a low standard deviation. 5 people will lose a top 30 here, including 1 top 10.

Stayed sober once for nine days in a row. I quit cold turkey. Damn near almost made it to ten. But that’s a hell of a lot to ask of a drinkin’ man.

Another song that I am surprised to see place this low, but this one I am not exactly upset about. This song is a lyrical masterpiece, but I find it a little bit boring from a production standpoint. It was a terrible choice for radio, and definitely dealt a major blow towards George's radio career by being his first real radio flop. I still love this song, I just do not listen to it nearly as often as I do many of his other hits.
Still, I expected this one to do better based on how people always talk about it! It was a contender for the top 50 for a short period in the middle, but it was also a bottom 20 contender for about the same amount of time. In the end it settled comfortably into the 60s, which is a more than fair placement for it imo. Unfortunately George Strait Junkie joins the top-2 losses club!

Oh "Drinkin' Man" is much much too low...boo!!
On the other hand you're exactly right about "What Do You Say To That" being forgotten, I always forget it was a single. Just didn't stand out much when it was out.

Not surprised to see “Ace In the Hole” out already, but man this song is great. I love everything about the Beyond the Blue Neon album...it was so unlike anything George had ever done in the 80’s and it’s still a standout for me in his awesome discography. I remember George saying they wanted to get the Ace in the Hole Band into the studio to perform on the song but it just didn’t work out at the time.
Forgot I ranked “What Do You Say to That” so low; I always really liked the song back then but for whatever reason the song hasn’t aged well for me. I think I likely ranked it so low because it just doesn’t hold up well to his other singles. I do agree as a whole that Always Never the Same is a very solid album.

My face when I saw "Drinkin' Man" out already. Yeah, I'm genuinely surprised that "Drinkin' Man" is this low and had so many bottom 10/20 rankings. I definitely expected it to do quite a bit better here.

I definitely expected it to do quite a bit better here. I mean, yeah it's slower for sure, but it's got a great melody; wonderful lyrics; sung well by George and has solid production. I had no idea that many people disliked it.

The elimination of “Ace In The Hole” also reminded me of another Bud Light commercial!
If I’m correct, this was also the first song George ever sang at the CMA’s without his guitar (he went on to win Entertainer of the Year that night); he also performed “You Know Me Better Than That,” “Carrying Your Love With Me,” and “What Do You Say To That” sans guitar.

I think for the most part George came across just fine without a guitar...especially with his “Ace In The Hole” performance. George + Tuxedo = Sexy!!

Not quite sure what year I left off with, but gotta jump around a bit if I’m gonna make it to a 100:
#81: I first joined George’s fan club in the winter of ‘92. I’ve been a member ever since! It wasn’t free back then lol, but I miss getting the quarterly news letters with Anita’s notes and tidbits about what might be coming from George.
#80: George’s yearly calendar used to always hang up on my wall (dating back to 1992); lots of those early pictures had George on stage in a pink or light blue Wrangler shirt which must’ve been from his 1991/early 1992 tour.
#79: I did try growing a small ponytail (much like the character Dusty had) back in my younger days but it just wasn’t my style lol.

Y'all talking about him is gonna somehow summon him into this thread that he probably doesn't even know exists and I am not prepared for that. Though no one has mentioned Sturgill Simpson yet so maybe we're safe. well besides me just now

Now that George singing without a guitar AND the mere name of Sturgill Simpson have been brought up, we are on thin ice... But as long as nobody tries to claim that Sara Evans is a consistent artist or Martina is good at emoting, we should be good!
Edit: Well shit.

It was still a major commercial success, however, achieving Platinum status in just one week! It was rereleased in 2008 for all retailers under the title Classic Christmas.
Honestly, I don't have too much to say about any of these albums. George is definitely not one of my go-to Christmas artists. He sounds fine on these songs, of course, but when it comes to Christmas music I am not really a big fan of a traditional country instrumentation. Which is ironic, because I don't think anybody does Christmas music as well as country artists do! But to me most of George's Christmas output is the definition of forgettable. That is why I am not going to post any album tracks from any of these albums. However, we can't forget about this absolute classic, which is George's best Christmas song by far, but was unfortunately never put on any of his Christmas albums! bboat11 @adam1995 Cody Wants Out... .indulgecountry codyj100 sabre14 George Strait Junkie zaclord 🌈 mamasaid castleoblivion26 DistrictTwelve countrymusicjunkie CoJoFan gardyfan carriekins fearlessarrow LBTrocks tim BackwoodsBarbie Kanenrá:ke

On the "Fresh Cut Christmas" cover, what kind of tree is that, because it doesn't look anything like the pine trees we get in PA? I have also seen this type of tree used somewhere else, I think on Duck Dynasty. So is it like a standard Christmas Tree in the South Central US. Those types of trees seem to be decorative bushes up here. Also, aren't the branches kind of limp and weak to hold anything? Sorry, it's always been a big mystery to me why anyone would use those trees.

Don't let the branches fool you.
