Album Spotlight: Something Special
Released: August 29, 1985 Label: MCA Nashville Producer: Jimmy Bowen, George Strait Runtime: 29 min. 47 sec. Country Albums Chart: 1 Certification: Platinum
Singles/Rankdown Placements: The Chair (24) You're Something Special To Me (97)
Average Rank: 60.50
Tracklist: 1. You're Something Special To Me 2. Last Time The First Time 3. Haven't You Heard 4. In Too Deep 5. Blue Is Not A Word 6. You Sure Got This Ol' Redneck Feelin' Blue 7. The Chair 8. Dance Time In Texas 9. Lefty's Gone 10. I've Seen That Look On Me (A Thousand Times)
Album Tracks: "Last Time The First Time"
One of the more hook-driven songs on the album. It is very catchy, and would have made an excellent single. "Haven't You Heard"
This song is extremely poignant from a lyrical perspective. The point of view of the narrator is very interesting here. I love it when George puts himself in the position of being an unlikeable character, and this is certainly one of his less likable ones. I won't spoil the storyline for those who want to listen to this, but it is very well crafted. "In Too Deep"
"Darlin', I'm in too deep to pull out now..." Lmao I cannot listen to this song around my friends. I don't think George realized what an innuendo that phrase was going to sound like by the time the 2010s came along... Still, the song is amazing! One of the catchiest choruses on the album! Would have made a great single. "You Sure Got This Ol' Redneck Feelin' Blue"
This song is just plain catchy. Would have made a much better single than "You're Something Special To Me". The only problem is that the lyrics are a little bit sexist, with the narrator referring to his significant other as "Woman". Not that that would have really mattered on country radio... Besides, it is obviously not done with harmful intent, and the song is amazing otherwise! "Dance Time In Texas"
This is a novelty type of song that would not have done well as a radio single, but it is still a standout from the album because it is a perfect dancing song! It is a fast swinger for most of the time, but it also features a tempo shift into a slow dance section in the middle, which is always something that I enjoy in a song because it is so unique and speaks to a tremendous amount of artistry. "Lefty's Gone"
This tribute to Lefty Frizzell is a standout from the album simply for its melodic and lyrical strength. George's vocal performance here is full of a kind of melancholy pain that can only come from remembering the career of one of your idols who is no longer with us. bboat11 @adam1995 Cody Wants Out... .indulgecountry codyj100 sabre14 George Strait Junkie zaclord 🌈 mamasaid castleoblivion26 DistrictTwelve countrymusicjunkie CoJoFan gardyfan carriekins fearlessarrow LBTrocks tim BackwoodsBarbie Kanenrá:ke

Ouch! Losing "Fool Hearted Memory" right outside the top 20 hurts so much, but I guess I should be thankful it even made it THAT far considering lol. Still tho, it should have been a lock for top 20 at least and even top 10.
"All My Ex's Live In Texas" has never been a favorite of mine. I like it fine when I hear it, but you'd never see me go out of my way to purposely listen to it. Certainly not anywhere near my 'go-to' song list from George.

Album Spotlight: Pure Country
Released: September 15, 1992 Label: MCA Nashville Producer: Tony Brown, George Strait Runtime: 31 min. 24 sec. Country Albums Chart: 1 Certification: 6xPlatinum
Singles/Rankdown Placements: I Cross My Heart (45) Heartland (22) When Did You Stop Loving Me (77)
Average Ranking: 48.00
Tracklist: 1. Heartland 2. Baby Your Baby 3. I Cross My Heart 4. When Did You Stop Loving Me 5. She Lays It All On The Line 6. Overnight Male 7. Last In Love 8. Thoughts Of A Fool 9. The King Of Broken Hearts 10. Where The Sidewalk Ends 11. Heartland (Main Title Sequence)
Album Tracks: "Baby Your Baby"
A classic George Strait hook. This song definitely should have been a single! Coming on the heels of "Heartland" and "I Cross My Heart", I feel like this one could have been a #1 hit as well. "When Did You Stop Loving Me" is great, but I think this one would have moved the needle more. It is fun, uptempo, catchy, and has a just plain great message. "Overnight Male"
This song is a must-hear, even if only for the lyrics. The entire song is a pun off of the slogans and business model of the United States Postal Service, with all the delicious mail-related puns that can be made out of such a thing. "Last In Love"
This ballad is beautiful. George goes out of his way to turn in a softer vocal performance here, and it greatly influences the way the song turned out. It is probably too boring for radio, but this is one of the more artistically-awesome songs on the album. "Thoughts Of A Fool"
Just a really strong country song. Everything is a standout on this album, but what makes this one stand out is the verse melody. "The King Of Broken Hearts"
Perhaps the most unique melody on the album. This one immediately stands out because of the a cappella blues-scale-patterned vocal right out of the gate. I always wonder how George sings this one, because it is hard to sing a blues scale like that, because it's just plain difficult to wrap your mind around it, let alone turning it into vocals at the same time. On top of that the lyrics are descriptive and emotive, and George's vocal captures all the subtle emotional nuances of the miserable King of Broken Hearts. "Where The Sidewalk Ends"
The song that was used to represent George's (AKA Dusty's) disillusionment with the music industry in the movie "Pure Country", this song is undoubtedly one of the most instantly-recognizable from the entire movie. Accordingly, this is by far the biggest missed single opportunity from the album. I have no doubt in my mind that it would have been every bit as big as "Heartland" and "I Cross My Heart". Not only is it recognizable, but it is just a damn good song! bboat11 @adam1995 Cody Wants Out... .indulgecountry codyj100 sabre14 George Strait Junkie zaclord 🌈 mamasaid castleoblivion26 DistrictTwelve countrymusicjunkie CoJoFan gardyfan carriekins fearlessarrow LBTrocks tim BackwoodsBarbie Kanenrá:ke

Also, here is the decade breakdown heading into the top 20. All 4 decades of his career survived into the top 20!! 1980s: 23/27 (85% eliminated) 1990s: 26/36 (72% eliminated) 2000s: 21/26 (81% eliminated) 2010s: 10/11 (91% eliminated) Looks like the '90s are faring the best heading into the top 20, but interestingly all the decades are still fairly close, proportionally! The 2010s are looking to be eliminated first, since they are represented by only 1 remaining song ("I Got A Car"). But between the '80s, '90s, and '00s there is not one that is really in danger of disappearing in the super near future (unless there is a big purge of one of them all at once ) Also, 16 songs out of the remaining 20 were #1 hits for George on various charts. That means 80% of the top 20 is #1 singles! That also means that right now, 44/60 #1s have been eliminated, or 73%. Or another way to look at it, heading into the top 1/5 of the rankdown, over 1/4 of the #1 hits still remain. Which means the density of #1s in this top 20 is overall quite a bit heavier than the density of #1s has been in the bottom 80. (80% of the top 20 is #1 hits, versus 55% of the bottom 80).

I'm shocked that "I Got A Car" and "You Know Me Better Than That" made the top 20. Same. Honestly, "You Know Me Better Than That" is one of the very few George songs I will skip. Not that into it. This has been a very damaging rankdown. I don't even know how many top 10 I have left, all I know is, it's very few.

I like top 20 way more than I liked top 25 :) Oh and I don't quite understand how it is possible that I Cross My Heart was eliminated before Heartland.

This rankdown really got moving in the last week...and I'm getting behind on my fan notes. I think I might've gotten ahead of myself with trying to match as many songs in the list lol. Onward I go...
#68: Sometime in late 1994 a rumor somehow got started that George was moving to Nebraska (Fort Calhoun area to be exact)...it became such a big deal that every country radio station in the Omaha area was talking about it and even somehow managed to get someone to go into the studio and redo the song "Adalida" with lyrics referencing Nebraska and such. Anyways this is a distant memory but how this rumor ever got started I never found out. It might've been that George was looking into buying some land (maybe for cattle?) in the area.
#67: My fourth George Strait concert was again for the Country Music Festival in Ames, Iowa (April, 1999). Artists on this tour included Tim McGraw, Dixie Chicks, Kenny Chesney, Jo Dee Messina, Mark Wills, and Asleep at the Wheel. This remains my least favorite concert if only because of the setlist...he sang a lot of covers (he kicked off with "There Stands the Glass" along with too many album tracks from the recently released Always Never the Same). I remember so many people were leaving the stadium during George's set. This would be the last festival concert I'd attend because all around it just became too long of a day.

It really did end up being a long, long day...and I'm sure the Jack Daniels was flowing lol. I remember Kenny Chesney had a girlfriend at the time and could kind of get a glimpse of him hugging her backstage after the show. Do you remember the whole bit Tim McGraw did with his Nokia phone and placing a call to Faith Hill? It was nothing but a whole advertisement bit for Nokia at the time...but we all had to assume that Faith was on the phone and screamed HI!

More memories are coming back to mel...
#66: My fifth concert was George's final show at the Houston Astrodome in early 2003. This of course went on to be released as his first live cd. This was just a couple months before I went off into the Army. I do have to say that the order of the songs on the cd isn't right since he started the show off with "Stars in the Water" and not "Write This Down" (although I think the DVD corrects this). There were also a lot of songs omitted such as some of his most recent hits including "If You Can Do Anything Else."
#65: Since this song left already...I was in basic training for the Army while "Living and Living Well" was climbing the charts and went #1. Since we only had a few minutes on the computer I spent my time first checking the charts each week and then sending my family updates after that lol. I was certainly more concerned with how well that song was performing haha.
#64: If my chronology is correct, my sixth concert was George's show with Alan Jackson and Jimmy Buffett at Texas Stadium in May, 2004 (which of course later became another live album that finally got released in 2007). I went to this show by myself since it wasn't all that far from Ft. Hood where I was stationed with the Army. Alan sang first and George came out to sing "Designated Drinker" with him; George came on second and Alan came out to sing "Murder on Music Row" with him...Jimmy Buffett also came out during George's set to sing "All My Ex's Live In Texas;" during Jimmy's set both Alan and George sang their new duets ("Boats to Build" and "Sea of Heartbreak" that was included on the recently released License to Chill album.
#63: This one is fast forwarding quite a bit but a good memory...watching the movie Nebraska and hearing the song "Check Yes or No" out of nowhere was really cool. I still have no idea why that song was ever included in the move lol.
#62: I got a bunch of tickets for myself and friends to see George Strait at the Cheyenne Frontier Days (I forget the exact year but I think it was July 2004). We planned the entire trip well in advance only when it came down to the wire I had to stay behind due to military obligations so my friends from South Texas went on without me...only to get there to unusually cold temps along with rainout conditions (I'm not sure if George finished his set). I really wanted to be there...but after hearing their stories I was kind of glad I wasn't haha.
edit: I might have to switch this up to a top 50 lol...but I'm really trying to bring back all these memories.

Faith was actually backstage and when Tim did his phone thing she came out...with one of their daughters who was a toddler at the time. Neal McCoy was a stand out in that show. What a spectacular entertainer that man is. But lets face it, anytime a show opens with Asleep At The Wheel and ends with George Strait, it's all gonna be BIG FUN!

I'm guessing the smaller our average is, the better right? Yep. If your average is smaller, that means in general you have more higher-ranked songs remaining. Edit: It looks like you're doing super well, despite losing your #1 already!

It was even on track to be a top 10 contender, until mamasaid tanked it out of the top 15 and it never recovered. Anyway, this song is one of George's modern classics, so I am so happy to see it placing so high. It was the perfect blend of old and modern George, and the fact that it became his 51st #1 after the surprisingly lackluster Honkytonkville era preceded it with 0 for 3 in the #1s department just makes this song that much more important for his career! {Songs Remaining} Amarillo By Morning Blue Clear Sky Carried Away Carrying Your Love With Me Check Yes Or No Give It Away I Can Still Make Cheyenne I Got A Car If I Know Me Love Without End, Amen Ocean Front Property Run She Let Herself Go The Cowboy Rides Away Troubadour True Write This Down You Know Me Better Than That You Look So Good In Love
