Shania Twain's 'Now' Debuts at No. 1 on Billboard 200 Albums Chart
Plus: Demi Lovato, A Boogie Wit da Hoodie, and Miley Cyrus arrive in Top 10; Tom Petty re-enters at No. 2.
Shania Twain debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart with Now, her first studio album in nearly 15 years. The set starts atop the list with 137,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending Oct. 5, according to Nielsen Music.
Of that sum, 134,000 were in traditional album sales -- the third-largest sales week for a country album in 2017, and the largest for a woman in nearly two years. Now, which was released on Sept. 29 through Mercury Nashville, is Twain’s second No. 1 album and the first chart-topping country set by a female artist in over three years.
The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new Oct. 21-dated chart (where Now debuts at No. 1) will be posted in full on Billboard’s websites on Tuesday, Oct. 10.
Twain’s Now is the singer’s fifth studio album, and first since Up!, which was released in November of 2002. The latter album marked the performer’s first No. 1 on the Billboard 200, and spent five weeks in the penthouse (and six weeks at No. 1 on the Top Country Albums chart). Following Up!, she issued a Greatest Hits album two years later that hit No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and No. 1 on Top Country Albums. Then, in 2015, she released the live album Still the One: Live From Las Vegas, which peaked at No. 55 on the Billboard 200 and No. 2 on Top Country Albums.
Now is the second country album to hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in 2017, following Thomas Rhett’s Life Changes. Now is also the first country set by a woman to lead the chart in over three years, since Miranda Lambert’s Platinum spent a week at No. 1 (June 21, 2014).
Additionally, Now notches the third-biggest sales week for a country album in 2017, following Chris Stapleton’s From A Room: Volume 1 (202,000) and Zac Brown Band’s Welcome Home (139,000). Now also claims the biggest sales frame for a country album by a woman since Carrie Underwood’s Storyteller started with 164,000 (Nov. 14, 2015-dated chart).
Now’s debut benefits from a concert ticket/album bundle sale redemption promotion in association with Twain’s 2018 U.S. tour. Other No. 1s in 2017 that employed the same sort of offer include The Killers’ Wonderful Wonderful, LCD Soundsystem’s American Dream, Arcade Fire’s Everything Now, The Chainsmokers’ Memories… Do Not Open and Katy Perry’s Witness.
Twain made her Billboard chart debut on March 27, 1993 with the single “What Made You Say That,” which entered the Hot Country Songs chart at No. 74. It eventually peaked at No. 55, marking the first of over 30 hits for Twain on the list. Her self-titled debut album topped out at No. 67 in 1993 on the Top Country Albums chart, and did not reach the all-genre Billboard 200.
Her follow-up, The Woman in Me, seriously changed her chart fortunes, as the album spent 29 weeks at No. 1 on the Top Country Albums chart and peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard 200. Her third album, the blockbuster Come On Over, spent a record 50 weeks at No. 1 on Top Country Albums (still the longest run at No. 1 for any album in the chart’s history), and hit No. 2 on the Billboard 200.
Twain’s Now was led by the single “Life’s About to Get Good,” which hit No. 33 on Hot Country Songs and has so far peaked at No. 12 on the Adult Contemporary airplay chart.
At No. 2 on the new Billboard 200, the late Tom Petty re-enters with his Greatest Hits (alongside The Heartbreakers), as the album returns to the list with 84,000 units (up 2,231 percent) and 52,000 in traditional album sales (up 3,407 percent). Petty died on Oct. 2. Greatest Hits initially peaked at No. 5 in February of 1994, following its release the previous year.
Greatest Hits is Petty’s third album to peak at No. 2 on the chart, alongside Mojo (2010) and Damn the Torpedoes (1980). He hit No. 1 once, with Hypnotic Eye in 2014.
Demi Lovato earns her sixth top 10 album with the debut of Tell Me You Love Me at No. 3. It bows with 75,000 units (48,000 in traditional album sales). She previously hit the top 10 with all five of her prior releases: Confident (No. 2 in 2015), Demi (No. 3, 2013), Unbroken (No. 4, 2011), Here We Go Again (No. 1, 2009), and Don’t Forget (No. 2, 2008).
At No. 4, Rapper A Boogie Wit da Hoodie scores his first top 10 album, as his first full-length studio album, The Bigger Artist, launches with 67,000 units (10,000 in traditional album sales). The set is largely powered by streaming activity, as it collected 54,000 SEA units (equaling 81.2 million on-demand audio streams for the album’s songs in its first week). A Boogie Wit da Hoodie has charted twice previously with the mixtapes Artist (No. 70) and TBA (No. 63).
Miley Cyrus’ Younger Now rounds out the debuts in the top 10, as the album bows at No. 5 with 45,000 units (33,000 in traditional album sales). It’s Cyrus’ 13th charting effort, and 11th top 10 album (including titles billed to her former Disney Channel alter ego, Hannah Montana). She was last in the top 10 with her 2013 effort Bangerz, which debuted at No. 1.
Post Malone’s Stoney is steady at No. 6 on the new Billboard 200, with 42,000 units (up 14 percent) while Lil Uzi Vert’s Luv Is Rage 2 dips four slots to No. 7 with 40,000 units (down 10 percent). Imagine Dragons’ Evolve falls one position to No. 8 with 39,000 units (though up 6 percent) and Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN. descends 8-9 with 34,000 units (down less than 1 percent). Ed Sheeran’s ÷ (Divide) closes out the top 10, as it’s a non-mover at No. 10 with 31,000 units (up 4 percent).

Tom Petty's 'Greatest Hits' Returns to Billboard 200 Albums Chart at No. 2
By Keith Caulfield | October 08, 2017 3:05 PM EDT Tom Petty
Five Petty albums re-enter the chart, led by his “Greatest Hits” set.
The late Tom Petty, who died on Oct. 2, is remembered on the latest Billboard 200 albums chart, as five of his albums return to the list.
Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers’ Greatest Hits re-enters at No. 2 with 84,000 units (up 2,231 percent) earned in the week ending Oct. 5, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 52,000 were in traditional album sales (up 3,407 percent). Greatest Hits initially peaked at No. 5 in February of 1994, following its release the previous year.
The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new Oct. 21-dated chart (where Greatest Hits sits at No. 2) will be posted in full on Billboard’s websites on Tuesday, Oct. 10.
Greatest Hits is Petty’s third album to peak at No. 2 on the chart, alongside Mojo (2010) and Damn the Torpedoes (1980). He hit No. 1 once, with Hypnotic Eye in 2014.
Elsewhere on the Billboard 200, Petty’s 1994 solo studio effort Wildflowers returns at No. 27 with 16,000 units (up 2,117 percent) and 7,000 copies sold (up 3,444 percent) and Petty and The Heartbreakers’ retrospective compilation Anthology: Through the Years re-enters at No. 32 with 14,000 units (up 2,058 percent) and 6,000 copies sold (up 3,833 percent). Petty and The Heartbreakers’ 1979 studio album, Damn the Torpedoes, re-enters at No. 122 (6,000 units; up 2,929 percent and 5,000 copies sold; up 3,244 percent) and Petty’s 1989 solo studio set, Full Moon Fever, returns at No. 127 (6,000 units; up 1,470 percent and 5,000 copies sold; up 1,813 percent).

Obviously heavily weighted towards the concert ticket offer
134K out of 137K units being traditional sales tells me there is little interest in the songs themselves as the singles are failing and no one is going out of their way to stream it

I could really see Tom Petty being #1 next week since next week look to be a pretty abysmal week overall. Then P!nk takes the following chart with ease.

Of course Shania Twain wouldn't be a heavily streamed act. At her age, she'd either have to pass on or have some other, extraordinary event occur for a great number of the streaming crowd to be interested.
Billboard upated the article to include this passage:
Now’s debut benefits from a concert ticket/album bundle sale redemption promotion in association with Twain’s 2018 U.S. tour. Other No. 1s in 2017 that employed the same sort of offer include The Killers’ Wonderful Wonderful, LCD Soundsystem’s American Dream, Arcade Fire’s Everything Now, The Chainsmokers’ Memories… Do Not Open and Katy Perry’s Witness.

Tour bundles are the equalizer since nowadays "streaming" counts as real sales which is total crap. And streaming is a heavily ageist sector, so I'm glad older established artists can find other ways, plus its not like they dont have to buy those tour bundles, at least they're spending money on her, unlike say listening to something on spotify...
Anyway, even without the bundles she'd be #1, so its an irrelevant issue to bring up.

This would suggest the bundles thing was not really a factor Look ahead to next weeks preview The #2 act is still in the running. It is very likely Shania will not even be in the top 20 All the acts that have incorporated this promotion have seen fairly steep week 2 drops. Which would say that concert bundles are huge drivers of week 1 numbers - including Shania's 137,000 units is grossly over-inflated - by the buy a ticket get a CD promo

Albums are included in the ticket prices, so if a consumer opts to redeem a copy, it's as much a sale as via traditional means.
skizzo- I primarily look at the Album Sales chart, but I see what you mean about being an "equalizer," at least in terms of the multi-metric one.

No, people overestimate the bundle thing, having a dedicated fanbase is much more important and they buy the album regardless.
The bundle will play more significant role in coming weeks (Metallica, Katy Perry etc are evidences of that with reclimbs)

Chart Watch: The durable Shania Twain debuts at No. 1
If I were advising artists, I wouldn’t recommend taking a decade or more off between studio albums. Fans can lose interest and drift away. We saw evidence of that just last week when Fergie’s first solo album in 11 years, Double Dutchess, entered the Billboard 200 at a disappointing No. 19. (It nosedives to No. 131 in its second week.) But a long layoff didn’t seem to hurt Shania Twain, whose first studio album in nearly 15 years, Now, debuts at No. 1, higher than new albums by the much younger Demi Lovato and Miley Cyrus — and both their albums contain top 10 singles.
Now is Twain’s second No. 1 album. Her last studio album, Up!, spent its first five weeks at No. 1 in December 2002 and January 2003. Now is the first album by a female country artist to reach No. 1 since Miranda Lambert’s Platinum in June 2014.
Twain is one of just four female artists born in Canada to amass two or more No. 1 albums. She follows Celine Dion, who has had four; Alanis Morissette, who has had three, and Avril Lavigne, who has also had two. Now also enters Top Country Albums at No. 1, displacing Thomas Rhett’s Life Changes, which spent three weeks on top. It’s Twain’s fifth No. 1 country album.
Now also enters the Official U.K. Albums Chart at No. 1. It’s the first country album to reach No. 1 in both the U.S. and the U.K. since Taylor Swift’s Red in late 2012. Now is Twain’s second No. 1 album in the U.K. Come on Over spent 11 weeks on top in that country. (You may be surprised to learn that that blockbuster peaked at No. 2 in the U.S.)
Top Albums
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ Greatest Hits reenters the Billboard 200 at No. 2 in the wake of Petty’s death on Oct. 2. This is the fourth time in recent years that a compilation by a music legend has soared into the top five in the immediate wake of his or her death. Whitney Houston’s Whitney: The Greatest Hits logged three weeks at No. 2 following her death in February 2012. David Bowie’s Best of Bowie reached No. 4 following his death in January 2016. Prince’s The Very Best of Prince hit No. 1 following his death in April 2016. (A second Prince compilation, The Hits/The B-Sides, reached No. 4.)
(Michael Jackson’s Number Ones would have logged six weeks at No. 1 following his death in June 2009, but catalog albums were barred from the Billboard 200 at the time. A second Jackson compilation, The Essential Michael Jackson, would have ranked No. 2.)
This is the highest ranking to date for Petty’s Greatest Hits album, surpassing its initial No. 5 peak in February 1994. Greatest Hits is Petty’s fourth album to reach No. 1 or No. 2 on the Billboard 200. It follows Damn the Torpedoes (No. 2 for seven weeks in 1980), Mojo (No. 2 for one week in 2010) andHypnotic Eye (No. 1 for one week in 2014). This gives Petty an impressive, nearly 38-year span of No. 2 albums.
Six Petty songs are listed in the top 40 on the Top Digital Songs chart. Petty’s bestselling digital hits in the week following his death are, in order, “Free Fallin” (No. 10), “I Won’t Back Down” (No. 21), “Mary Jane’s Last Dance” (No. 25), “Learning to Fly” (No. 29), “You Don’t Know How It Feels” (No. 36), and “American Girl” (No. 39).
Petty and the Heartbreakers’ Greatest Hits jumps to No. 1 on Top Catalog Albums, displacing Ed Sheeran’s x. This is the compilation’s second week on top of the catalog chart. It first topped that chart in February 2008 following their halftime performance at Super Bowl XLII. (It surged to No. 12 on the Billboard 200 that week.) Petty has the top three albums on this week’s Top Catalog Albums chart. His 1994 solo album Wildflowers is No. 2, the group’s double-disk 2000 collection Anthology: Through the Years is No. 3. (On the Billboard 200, they reenter at No. 27 and No. 32, respectively.)
Demi Lovato lands her sixth consecutive top five album as Tell Me You Love Me debuts at No. 3. That’s Lovato’s entire output of studio albums.
A Boogie wit da Hoodie’s debut album, The Bigger Artist, debuts at No. 4. The title is a play on the title of his 2016 mixtape, Artist, which marks one year on the chart this week. The album includes “Drowning” (featuring Kodak Black), which reached No. 38 on the Hot 100. Other artists who make guest appearances on the album include Chris Brown, Trey Songz, and 21 Savage.
Miley Cyrus lands her 11th top 10 album (counting Hannah Montana albums), as Younger Now debuts at No. 5. That chart position represents a drop from Cyrus’s last studio album, Bangerz, which debuted at No. 1 in October 2013.
Post Malone’s Stoney holds at No. 6 in its 43rd week. This equals its highest ranking to date.
Lil Uzi Vert’s first full-length album, Luv Is Rage 2, drops from No. 3 to No. 7 in its sixth week. The album debuted at No. 1. Imagine Dragons’ Evolve dips from No. 7 to No. 8 in its 15th week. The album debuted and peaked at No. 2.
Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN. dips from No. 8 to No. 9 its 25th week. The album has logged four weeks at No. 1.
Ed Sheeran’s ÷ holds at No. 10 in its 31st week. The album spent its first two weeks at No. 1.
The Killers’ Wonderful Wonderful plummets from No. 1 to No. 59 in its second week. This is the third time in the past six weeks that an album has fallen from No. 1 clear out of the top 50 in its second week. Brand New’s Science Fiction tumbled from No. 1 to No. 97. LCD Soundsystem’s American Dream dove from No. 1 to No. 56. This is the new normal until rock (and country) artists start to have more streaming (which will eventually come). Four other albums drop out of the top 10 this week. Macklemore’s Gemini drops from No. 2 to No. 19. Kevin Gates’s By Any Means 2 drops from No. 4 to No. 22. Jhené Aiko’s Trip drops from No. 5 to No. 21. Khalid’s American Teen drops from No. 9 to No. 11.
The Moana soundtrack inches up from No. 32 to No. 30 in its 46th week. The album peaked at No. 2. It’s No. 1 on Top Soundtracks for the 24th week. Coming Attractions: Look for NF’s Perception and Lil Pump’s debut album, Lil Pump, to make the top 10 next week, along with a deluxe, expanded edition of Kane Brown’s Kane Brown. Top Songs
Cardi B’s “Bodak Yellow (Money Moves)” holds at No. 1 for the third week in its 14th week on the Hot 100. Cardi B is the just third female rapper to top the Hot 100 for three or more weeks. She follows Lil’ Kim, who reigned for five weeks in June 2001 with “Lady Marmalade,” a co-equal collabo with Christina Aguilera, Mya, and P!nk; and Iggy Azalea, whose debut hit, “Fancy,” (featuring Charli XCX) spent seven weeks on top in June and July 2014.
“Bodak Yellow (Money Moves)” holds at No. 1 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart for the sixth week. This is the longest run at No. 1 on that chart by a female lead artist since Rihanna’s “Work” (featuring Drake) logged 11 weeks at No. 1 in early 2016. It’s the longest run at No. 1 by a female lead artist with no featured artists since Nicki Minaj’s “Anaconda” logged six weeks on top in late 2014.
Post Malone’s “Rockstar” (featuring 21 Savage) holds at No. 2 in its third week. The song jumps to No. 1 on the Official U.K. Singles Chart, displacing Sam Smith’s “Too Good at Goodbyes,” which reigned for three weeks.
J Balvin & Willy William’s “Mi Gente” (featuring Beyoncé) vaults from No. 21 to No. 3 in its 14th week. This surge is due to the release of a remixed version featuring Queen Bey. The original version had climbed as high as No. 19. It’s Beyoncé’s 17th top 10 as a solo artist. (She amassed 10 additional top 10 hits as a member of Destiny’s Child.) The song sold 79K digital copies this week, which enables it to leap from No. 34 to No. 1 in its 14th week on Top Digital Songs.
Logic’s “1–800-273-8255″ (featuring Alessia Cara & Khalid) holds at No. 4 in its 23rd week. The song has climbed as high as No. 3. Taylor Swift’s “Look What You Made Me Do” drops from No. 3 to No. 5 in its seventh week. The song spent three weeks on top.
Portugal. The Man’s “Feel It Still” inches up No. 7 to No. 6 in its 16th week. The song is No. 1 on Top Rock Songs for the second week. It’s No. 1 on the Alternative Songs airplay chart for the 16th week. Only one song has had a longer run at No. 1 on the alternative chart in this decade — Muse’s “Madness,” which spent 19 weeks on top in 2012-13.
Imagine Dragons land their fourth top 10 hit, as “Thunder” jumps from No. 17 to No. 7 in its 23rd week.
Demi Lovato lands her highest-charting hit to date as “Sorry Not Sorry” jumps from No. 10 to No. 8 in its 13th week. Lovato’s previous top 10 hits were “This Is Me,” a collabo with Joe Jonas (No. 9), “Skyscraper” (No. 10), and “Heart Attack” (No. 10).
Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee’s “Despacito” (featuring Justin Bieber) drops from No. 5 to No. 9 in its 38th week. The song spent a record-tying 16 weeks at No. 1. “Despacito” tops the 2.5 million mark in digital sales this week. (It’s at 2,506,000, to be precise.)
French Montana’s “Unforgettable” (featuring Swae Lee) drops from No. 6 to No. 10 in its 26th week. The song peaked at No. 3 Imagine Dragons’ “Believer” and Yo Gotti’s “Rake It Up” (featuring Nicki Minaj) both drop out of the top 10 this week.
Camila Cabello lands her third top 40 solo hit as “Havana” (featuring Young Thug) jumps from No. 44 to No. 29 in its eighth week.
Post Malone lands his fourth top 40 hit as “I Fall Apart” vaults from No. 65 to No. 39 in its second week.

She's set to drop to #5 in sales and #20 in SPS so No. You seem mad lmao. There's absolutely nothing wrong with Tour bundles with sales the way they are and if anyone's ok with streaming being included, which is extremely unfair to older acts, then I find it ridiculous if they have a problem with bundles. Plus considering she debuted at #1 in the U.K without them, I'm sure she would've done fine in the U.S either way considering she's always been much bigger there.

Hardly Buy a ticket - Get a CD is a way to move albums. That is fine as it happens all the time. Just pointing out that we won't likely be discussing this album's performance for very long as is the case with most albums that get to #1 this way. No hits, It got a #1 based on the ticket CD gimmick, almost all of the album's "consumption" numbers are based on CD sales. This means there is little interest in the songs themselves. Unless something changes, regardless of how many hits she has had in the past, this album won't be in the spotlight for very long.

I think even if she had hits from the cd it wouldn't do well because I don't think her audience streams music.

No, people overestimate the bundle thing, having a dedicated fanbase is much more important and they buy the album regardless. The bundle will play more significant role in coming weeks (Metallica, Katy Perry etc are evidences of that with reclimbs) Yeah, I really don't see too much of an influence on the first week. Most of the people snatching tickets within the first week were big fans that would likely get the album anyway.
