Country superstar Luke Bryan notches his fourth No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart with the arrival of What Makes You Country. The set, which was released on Dec. 8 through Capitol Records Nashville, bows atop the list with 108,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending Dec. 14, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 99,000 were in traditional album sales.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new Dec. 30-dated chart (where What Makes You Country debuts at No. 1) will be posted in full on Billboard's websites on Tuesday (Dec. 19).

Bryan’s last charting set was the EP Farm Tour: Here’s to the Farmer in 2016, which debuted and peaked at no. 4 with 34,000 units (of which, 32,000 were in traditional album sales). Bryan’s last full-length studio effort, 2015’s Kill the Lights, debuted at No. 1 with 345,000 units, with 320,000 of that sum in album sales. Bryan additionally scored No. 1s with both Crash My Party and Spring Break… Here to Party in 2013.

What Makes You Country is the fourth country set to hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in 2017, following Kenny Chesney's Live in No Shoes Nation, Shania Twain's Now and Thomas Rhett's Life Changes. That’s the most country leaders in a year since 2014, when five titles visited the top: Eric Church’s The Outsiders, Miranda Lambert’s Platinum, Blake Shelton’s Bringing Back the Sunshine, Jason Aldean’s Old Boots, New Dirt; and Florida Georgia Line’s Anything Goes. (Notably, all of the five No. 1s for country in 2014 came when the chart was still a pure sales-based ranking, before it transitioned in December 2014 to an equivalent album units-ranking.)

Bryan made his Billboard chart debut 10 years ago, back on Feb. 10, 2007, when his single “All My Friends Say” arrived on the Hot Country Songs chart at No. 59. It would eventually peak at No. 5 in September of that year. That same month, his first album, I’ll Stay Me, topped out at No. 2 on the Top Country Albums chart, and No. 24 on the Billboard 200.

What Makes You Country was preceded by the single “Light It Up,” which has so far peaked at No. 4 on Hot Country Songs, and granted the singer his 18th No. 1 on the Country Airplay chart.

Back on the Billboard 200, Taylor Swift’s Reputation rises from No. 3 to No. 2 with 100,000 units (down 11 percent), while Ed Sheeran’s ÷ (Divide) climbs 4-3 with 70,000 units (up 2 percent), and Pentatonix’s A Pentatonix Christmas ascends 5-4 with 67,000 units (up 1 percent).

A pair of hip-hop albums bow at Nos. 5 and 6, respectively, driven largely by streaming activity, as the compilation set Quality Control: Control the Streets, Vol. 1 album debuts at No. 5, while Big Sean and Metro Boomin’s collaborative effort Double or Nothing enters at No. 6.

Control the Streets bows with nearly 52,000 units — with just 4,000 in album sales, 2,000 in TEA, but a whopping 45,000 in SEA (equaling 68.1 million streams of its songs during the tracking week). Double or Nothing begins with 50,000 units — with 10,000 in traditional album sales, 2,000 in TEA, and 38,000 in SEA (57.5 million song streams). The Control the Streets and Double or Nothing albums are the Nos. 1 and 2 most-streamed sets of the week on the chart, by total number of streams generated for their respective songs.

For Big Sean, Double or Nothing is his fifth total, and consecutive, top 10 effort, and second in 2017, following his No. 1 I Decided. Metro Boomin ups his top 10 count to two, following his earlier collaborative set Without Warning, alongside 21 Savage and Offset (which peaked at No. 4).

Following Double or Nothing on the new Billboard 200, Chris Stapleton’s From A Room: Volume 2 falls from No. 2 to No. 7 in its second week, with 47,000 units (down 63 percent). Sam Smith’s The Thrill of It All moves 7-8 (46,000 units; down 2 percent) and Michael Bublé’s Christmas dips 8-9 with 42,000 units (though it’s up 2 percent). Post Malone’s Stoney rounds out the top 10, as it climbs 11-10 with 36,000 units (down 5 percent).

Top Albums

Luke Bryan lands his fourth No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 as What Makes You Country dislodges U2’s Songs of Experience. It’s the fourth country album to top the “pop” chart in 2017, following Thomas Rhett’s Life Changes, Shania Twain’s Now, and Kenny Chesney’s Live in No Shoes Nation. Bryan’s album also enters Top Country Albums at No. 1, dislodging Chris Stapleton’s From A Room: Volume 2. It’s Bryan’s eighth album or EP to top the country chart.


Taylor Swift’s Reputation rebounds from No. 3 to No. 2 in its fifth week. The album spent its first three weeks on top.

Ed Sheeran’s ÷ inches up from No. 4 to No. 3 in its 41st week. The album spent its first two weeks at No. 1. The album tops the 1 million mark in traditional album sales this week. It’s the second album to reach that threshold in 2017, following Swift’s Reputation (which is up to 1,719,000 in traditional album sales). ÷ logs its 18th week at No. 1 on the Official U.K. Albums Chart. That’s the longest run by any album since Adele’s 21 had 23 weeks on top in 2011-12. It’s the longest run by a male solo artist since Elvis Presley’s Blue Hawaii soundtrack also had 18 weeks on top in 1962.

Pentatonix’s 2016 album A Pentatonix Christmas inches up from No. 5 to No. 4 in its 20th chart week. The album spent two weeks at No. 1 in its first holiday season. It holds at No. 1 on Top Catalog Albums for the fifth week.


Quality Control: Control the Streets, Vol. 1 debuts at No. 5. It features tracks by Migos, Gucci Mane, Lil Yachty, Nicki Minaj, Cardi B, Travis Scott, Young Thug, Ty Dolla Sign and Kodak Black, among others.

Big Sean & Metro Boomin’s Double or Nothing debuts at No. 6. It’s the second collabo for both artists to reach the top 10. Big Sean climbed as high as No. 5 in 2016 with Twenty88, a collabo with Jhené Aiko. Metro Boomin climbed as high as No. 4 a few weeks ago with Without Warning, a collabo with 21 Savage and Offset. This is Big Sean’s sixth top 10 album overall.

Chris Stapleton’s From A Room: Volume 2 drops from its No. 2 peak to No. 7 in its second week.

Sam Smith’s The Thrill of It All dips from No. 7 to No. 8 in its sixth week. The album debuted at No. 1.

Michael Bublé’s 2011 album Christmas dips from No. 8 to No. 9 in its 62nd chart week. The album logged five weeks at No. 1 in its first holiday season. This is the seventh consecutive holiday season that Bublé’s album has cracked the top 10. Bublé’s album is the first album of any description to appear in the top 10 in seven consecutive years.

Post Malone’s Stoney inches up from No. 11 to No. 10 in its 53rd week. The album peaked at No. 4.


U2’s Songs of Experience tumbles from No. 1 to No. 13 in its second week. It’s the band’s second studio album in a row to log just a single week in the top 10. Songs of Innocence also experienced that fate. Of course, such falls are much more common than they used to be. Songs of Experience is the 12th album to fall from No. 1 out of the top 10 in 2017.

Three other albums drop out of the top 10 this week. Demi Lovato’s Tell Me You Love Me drops from No. 6 to No. 26. Miguel’s War & Leisure drops from No. 9 to No. 29. Garth Brooks’s five-CD boxed set The Anthology: Part I: The First Five Years drops from No. 10 to No. 12.

The Vince Guaraldi Trio’s 1965 classic A Charlie Brown Christmas jumps from No. 32 to No. 28 in its 63rd chart week. The album has climbed as high as No. 23. The album is No. 1 on Top Soundtracks for the third week in a row (and the fifth week overall). The album has sold 3,696,000 copies in traditional album sales since Nielsen began tracking music sales in 1991. It sold millions more between its release in 1965 and 1991.

This week’s top soundtrack for a theatrically released film is Moana, which dips from No. 45 to No. 46 in its 56th week.

Barbra Streisand’s The Music … the Mem’ries … the Magic! debuts at No. 69. It’s Streisand’s eighth live album to crack the top 100.

Coming attractions: Eminem’s Revival is on track to debut at No. 1 next week. G-Eazy’s The Beautiful & Damned will vie with Swift’s album for No. 2. Also due: Jeezy’s Pressure, John Williams’s score for Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Billboard 200 Chart Moves: Bob Marley's 'Legend' Hits 500th Week on Chart

On the latest Billboard 200 albums chart (dated Dec. 30), Luke Bryan’s What Makes You Country bows at No. 1, securing the country star his fourth chart-topper. The album earned 108,000 equivalent album units in the week ending Dec. 14, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 99,000 were in traditional album sales.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the week’s most popular albums based on their overall consumption. That overall unit figure combines pure album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA).

Now, let’s take a closer look at some of the action on the rest of the Billboard 200:

— Bob Marley and The Wailers, Legend: The Best Of… – No. 170 — Bob Marley and The Wailers’ greatest hits collection, Legend: The Best of Bob Marley and The Wailers, spends a landmark 500th nonconsecutive week on the Billboard 200 chart. It remains the album with the second-most weeks on the list, behind Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon (with 934).

Legend was originally released on May 1, 1984, and debuted on the Billboard 200 dated Aug. 18 of that year. It initially reached No. 54 on the Billboard 200 in 1984.

Except for three years between mid-1985 and mid-1988, the set was a mostly regular feature the chart until the summer of 1991. At that point, catalog titles (older albums), were ineligible to chart on the Billboard 200 (minus a few exceptions). In 2009, after the catalog restriction was lifted, Legend returned to the list. Since then, the title has been a near-constant presence on the tally. In 2014, the album finally reached the top 10 of the chart, peaking at No. 5 (following a bargain basement sale pricing promotion in the Google Play store).

Legend has sold 12.3 million copies in the United States since 1991, when Nielsen Music started tracking sales. It is certified as selling 15 million, according to the Recording Industry Association of America, a total that accounts for sales before 1991.

Among all albums -- since the chart began publishing on a regular weekly basis in 1956 -- Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon holds the record for the most weeks on the chart: 934. It’s followed by Legend (500), Johnny Mathis' Johnny’s Greatest Hits (490), Journey’s Greatest Hits (490), the My Fair Lady original cast recording (480), Metallica’s self-titled album (461), Guns N’ Roses’ Greatest Hits (423), Nirvana’s Nevermind (380), Eminem’s Curtain Call:
 The Hits (371) and Adele’s 21 (355).

— Reba McEntire, My Kind of Christmas – No. 39 — The country queen earns her 18th top 40-charting set on the Billboard 200, and second of 2017, as My Kind of Christmas climbs 52-39. The set earned 16,000 equivalent album units in the week ending Dec. 14 (up 19 percent). The album was initially released exclusively through Cracker Barrel stores in 2016, and was reissued widely this year with a trio of additional tracks.

McEntire first visited the top 40 in 1991 with Rumor Has It, which topped out at No. 39 on the chart dated May 25 of that year. Among her 18 top 40 albums are a pair of No. 1s: Reba Duets (in 2007) and Keep On Loving You (2009).

On the Top Country Albums tally, the diva has claimed 34 top 40 entries, including 13 No. 1s.

— Soundtrack, Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2: Awesome Mix Vol. 2 – No. 65 — Following the film’s Netflix debut on Dec. 5, its companion soundtrack soars from No. 122 to No. 65 with 11,000 units (up 49 percent), with nearly all of that sum from album sales. The first film’s soundtrack also spikes up the list, rising 135-83 with 10,000 units (up 31 percent) -- all from album sales.

— Barbra Streisand, The Music… The Mem’ries… The Magic! Live in Concert – No. 69 — The pop diva’s latest live album arrives at No. 69, starting with 11,000 units (nearly all from traditional album sales). Streisand has charted a total of eight live sets on the Billboard 200, stretching back to A Happening in Central Park in 1968, which reached No. 30. Three of her live recordings have hit the top 10: One Voice (No. 9 in 1987), The Concert (No. 10 in 1994) and Live in Concert 2006 (No. 7).

— Soundtrack, The Greatest Showman – No. 71 — The soundtrack to the musical drama film starts at No. 71 with 11,000 units (9,000 in traditional album sales). The movie, which stars Hugh Jackman, arrived in U.S. movie theaters on Dec. 20.

^Journey's Greatest Hits got to 490 weeks this week and ties Johnny Mathis' Greatest Hits for the third most weeks in the Billboard 200. 21 got to 355 week becoming the album with the tenth most weeks, breaking a tie it had with Doo-Wop & Hooligans.

Luke Bryan takes over #1 from UMG label mate Chris Stapleton (who has 1/2 of the Top 6). Walker Hayes debuts with "boom." this week as well.

These days, it's not often to see superstar artists release albums so late in the buying season yet that's exactly what we have with Luke Bryan and Chris Stapleton holding fort in the Top 2 this week (Stapleton held down #1 with From A Room: Volume 2 last week). This week, Luke Bryan sold nearly 100,000 actual copies of his latest album What Makes You Country. While that sale number isn't close to the number from his last album, 2015's double platinum Kill The Lights, 100k is still a number that's nothing to sneeze at. The figure is 1/3 of what Luke scored last time out but it's not because his star isn't as hot as it once was. Instead, we can chalk it up to a mixture of three factors:

- fans are buying less physical products, especially younger fans who like his music and streaming it instead
- The release date was too late in the season (and placed there to guarantee a #1 Hot 200 Albums chart debut (which it achieved)
- Fans just weren't that interested in the lead single "Light It Up"

The truth is likely somewhere in those three statements but regardless of this, Luke's well on his way to another Gold and/or Platinum album and if he scores bigger hits off the album (note: he will), he's looking at potentially having a juggernaut of an album over the course of the next year or two.

As for other albums inside this week's T0p 10, Chris Stapleton holds fort with THREE of the Top 6 albums, no small feat in this day and age and the last (and only other) country artist to do so is Garth Brooks, just last year and earlier, in the 1990s. Remarkable. The total (traditional) sales of all three albums are over 3 million units with 2.156 million copies belonging to breakout album Traveller. Walker Hayes, who has been struggling to break out for nearly a decade now, finally scores with boom., his debut album for Monument Records. The album scanned over 12,000 copies. Not a bad start for an artist who was once cast aside as an also ran. We must mention Garth Brooks' Anthology, The First Five Years. The project, which features five discs of music (some of the tracks never previously heard before) is also a fantastic hardbound book and well worth the $25 price tag. The CD is actually secondary to the book, which chronicles the first five years (and albums) of Garth's career. Stars roundout the Top 10 with Blake Shelton, Kenny Chesney, Thomas Rhett and Tim McGraw/Faith Hill taking their places within the chart.
