Damn!!! Even Madonna?? I thought she would be a lot higher on this list, like at least crack the top 10! Well, you see, she doesn't sing like a Vocaloid on "Lucky Star", so that clearly makes it worse than every other song on this list, including To All The Girls I've Loved Before, If Ever You're In My Arms Again, Hard Habit To Break, Think Of Laura, Infatuation... Lol, what's a vocaloid???? I've never heard that term before.

#40. Break My Stride - Matthew Wilder I'm surprised how high this ends up compared to better songs on this list? This one always seemed silly to me.
#39. Talking In Your Sleep - The Romantics Love the Romantics. At least it ends up top 40 on this list, but it deserves so much better.
#38. Union Of The Snake - Duran Duran Duran Duran are one of my favorite bands ever. This sould have ended up top 20.
#37. Uptown Girl - Billy Joel This is my favorite Billy Joel song from that album. This is a fair placement for the song.
#36. Lucky Star - Madonna Great song. *0's Madonna was the best and her vocals sounded the best too.
#35. Say Say Say - Paul McCartney & Michael Jackson Duets are so unecessarry.
#34. Oh Sherrie - Steve Perry FUCK yeah! I'm glad this ended up in the top 20. Beautiful song with beautiful lyrics.
#33. 99 Luftballoons - Nena I don't know what version you all ranked, but I thought the English version was garbage. I much preferred the original German version.
#32. She Bop - Cyndi Lauper Cool Cyndi Lauper song. The music made the song. better than that "Goonies"..." shit.
#31. I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues - Elton John One of my favorite Sir Elton John songs. Amazing piano works.

Doc Indie Party Rock: Culture club was one of my favorites at that time. I bought three 45 rpms from them: Karma/Church, Itβs a miracle/Miss me and The war song/canciΓ³n de la guerra. They were all top 5s in my chart. Their last hit was Move Away, a top 2 in my chart. Spandau Ballet is another group I really liked, but Iβll comment when True comes up... luckily not anytime soon (and yeah, Iβve downloaded a couple of their latest songs! So happy when I knew they were back) Yes to Rebel Yell, another strong song from Billy! Panama was a mid-size hit back home and in my personal chart. David looked so... wrong but good? Lol Weβre not gonna take it was another big hit back home, multi-week chart-topper and all. And definitely a year end top 40 in my chart. Their followup I Wanna Rock was also a chart-topper but less successful. Relax wasnβt as popular back home. It was released later as well. Video wasnβt released but later in the 80s and only the censored version, which still felt sexual. Iβve liked it a lot but didnβt chart high in my personal chart.... I guess I followed the censorship as well From 38 Special in 1984, I only remember their mid-size hit Teacher Teacher...

One decidedly '80s music phenomenon that I've never liked is the intrusive, histrionic, over-the-top saxophone action, especially at the end of a song, and especially if it seems to be competing against the vocals. I don't mind if a saxophone gets its own solo in a song, or if it's used to add a little bit of decoration to a song, but if the last 30 seconds of a song is a guy blowing a saxophone like crazy and trampling all over the vocalists as the song fades out, then it just ruins everything for me. "The Glamorous Life" by Sheila E. is one of the most glaring examples of this phenomenon, and "Modern Love" by David Bowie and "I Wanna Go Back" by Eddie Money are two other examples that immediately jump out at me. Sad thing is, all three of those songs would be great if not for their loud and overwhelming sax outros.
The only three songs I can think of that I like in spite of this phenomenon are "You Should Hear How She Talks About You" by Melissa Manchester, "Living In America" by James Brown, and "Danger Zone" by Kenny Loggins. End of list. The difference with "You Should Hear How She Talks About You" is that the saxophone at the end of the song isn't showing off like it is in the songs I mentioned in the first paragraph, and also that the sax solo in the bridge is great. With "Living In America," it's that the saxophone doesn't end the song, and also sounds kind of funny for some reason. As for "Danger Zone," the saxophone is mixed lower, so it's underlying the vocals, rather than competing with them.

Finally a few Huey Lewis and The News songs, show up high on my own personal chart. 40. Footloose - Kenny Loggins (4) (B1) I forgot if this song already showed up, but I charted a lot of Kenny Loggins movie music. "I'm Free" "I'm Alright". He seemed to follow a pattern? This was some serious white boy dance rock. back then I thought ;the guy from Friday The 13th, was singing the song? www.youtube.com/watch?v=wFWDGTVYqE839. No More Words - Berlin (4) (B23) Loved all of Berlin's songs. This would become my favorite from the band. The most "poppy"? yes, but also the catchiest. www.youtube.com/watch?v=oIb9QUGjdIc38. Caribbean Queen - Billy Ocean (4) (B1) This made an Unnecessary early appearance on our joined list. A great R&B song that deserved Top 40 status. The composition of the song sounded right on target with the Exotic Caribbean Islands www.youtube.com/watch?v=9f16Fw_K45s37. ? 36. The Heart Of Rock 'N' Roll - Huey Lewis and The News (3) (B6) Now we finally get to see some Huey Lewis and The News action on y list. www.youtube.com/watch?v=M7JVlpm0eRs35. ? 34. ? 33. If This Is It - Huey Lewis and The News (3) (B6) This is such a good time, Rock n Rolling, bop. The sing a long factor to this band's songs was undeniable. www.youtube.com/watch?v=AaTQAaJWW5432. Hold On To 18 - Black 'n Blue (4) (BMR 50) Probably one of the few songs on my list that didn't chart on Billboard Hot 100, but it did chart on Mainstream Rock. I found it through MTV, where it got lots of airtime . The band would return to my charts one last time in 1986 with "Miss Mystery". www.youtube.com/watch?v=dcHYzogQeNk31. Send Me An Angel - Real Life (3) (B29) Normally I would love Australians for their rock style, but this was one of my favorite New Wave songs ever. They rereleased it in 1989, but it didn't have the same drive with the synths as the original had. www.youtube.com/watch?v=hwfErYUoqx8

Even the ballads and sometimes even the R&B ballads had some sort of guitar. Don't forget one of the biggest Sax rock songs of 81 from Foreigner. "Urgent"

"Urgent" Well yeah, the saxophone got its own solo in "Urgent," which, as I said, is fine with me, and it sounded awesome too. What I dislike is a saxophone competing with the vocals at the end of a song. Vocals alone or the saxophone alone as the song fades out would be fine, but combining the two just sounds sloppy as hell. "Modern Love," "The Glamorous Life" and "I Wanna Go Back" all have this problem, and it ruins songs that are otherwise good.

I'm completely amazed that Sunglasses at Night finished as high as it did. I thought that ranking it as low as I did would be one of my less controversial rankings. But I guess not.

Disappointed to see "That's All" go out in this set, but not entirely surprised. At least it was higher than "Against All Odds".

I have to say, I can't say that I was expecting my 85 to be my lone bottom half holdout. I thought it would "Against All Odds" or "Somebody's Watching Me", honestly.

"All Night Long" would've been in my top 5. "Somebody's Watching Me" deserved a little better too. "Eyes Without A Face" shockingly ended up higher than I would've ranked it, but I'm not complaining. Still haven't listened to "Self Control". The rest all overstayed their welcome.
Ugh at "Hold Me Now", "Drive" (sorry Doc), and "Footloose" being in the top 20.

40. Break My Stride (65): Cute, nice song that I still use... maybe just a bit too cutesy, simple... 39. Talking In Your Sleep (40): Fair placement for this strong song. Personal and country chart-topper that has remained an 80s favorite. 38. Union Of The Snake (44): Good song as well (with great visuals!). I just like other DD songs better, 37. Uptown Girl (21): One of my favorite BJ songs. THIS is the type of retro-influence that I do like. Really love the harmonies, and the final minute of the song. Cool video, too 36. Lucky Star (66): Sorry, Madge, I'm a huge fan but compared with other songs here, including your other two, this one just falls a bit short. It's good and the bridge is particularly lovely, but I just like other songs better this year. AND with this song my bottom 40 is cleared! :) 35. Say, Say, Say (24): This is amongst my top 10 Michael Jackson's songs ever. A star collabo that did work for me. I dig the combo of different vibes within the song, one more dance pop for when MJ sings and another more classic for when PMC sings; plus the harmonica sound takes it to a higher level. 34. Oh Sherrie (26): After seeing the dislike to Journey in other RDs and the lesser appreciation of power ballads, I was afraid this was going to be out in the bottom half. I'm really glad it's gone this far. I love the epicness of this song, from the powerful dynamics of the song, with the acapella moments, the background chorus, the guitar sound, the keyboard sound, and of course Steve Perry's unique voice. Superb song. 33. 99 Luftballons (18): This is another 1980s classic that has remained popular back home and with me. I've never used the English version, though, just the German one! Love the cinematic sound followed by the rock sound and the nostalgic moody vibe throughout the song. (Glad Nena had a couple of follow-up hits back home with Just A Dream and Irgendwie Irgendwo Irgendwann) 32. She Bop (9): Oh, no!!!! I knew this could happen, but I was still crossing fingers this could reach top 20. I was OBSESSED with this song in 1984. I loved the music, the rockier sound, the whistle, the more nostalgic sound of the chorus, and of course THAT VIDEO! My favorite for many years :) And at that age I didn't even know what she really meant when she was talking about 'bopping'. When I realized it, I appreciated the song even more. This was her third consecutive chart-topper back home and in my personal chart, and a top 5 yearend song for me. 31. I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues (46): A very strong, classic ballad from Elton. A song I had a hard time to rank, so I'm happy that at least one of Elton John's songs this year made it this far :)
