Eminem's 'Revival' Debuts at No. 1 on Billboard 200 Chart, G-Eazy & Jeezy Bow in Top 10

Eminem earns his eighth straight No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 albums chart, as his latest studio release, Revival, opens atop the tally. It launches with 267,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending Dec. 21, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 197,000 were in traditional album sales. Eminem is the first act to achieve eight consecutive chart entries that debuted at No. 1.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new Jan. 3-dated chart (where Revival debuts at No. 1) will be posted in full on Billboard's websites on Wednesday (Dec. 27). (The new chart is dated on a rare Wednesday date, instead of the usual Saturday, as Billboard is adjusting how it dates its charts and magazine issues.)

Revival was released on Dec. 15 through Web/Shady/Aftermath/Interscope Records. The set is Eminem’s first new studio album since 2013’s The Marshall Mathers LP 2, which debuted at No. 1 with 792,000 copies sold in its first week, according to Nielsen Music. (The Billboard 200 did not transition to a units-based tally until the end of 2014.)

Revival notches the third-largest week of 2017 among hip-hop albums, both in total units and album sales, trailing only the debuts of Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN. (603,000 units; 353,000 album sales) and Drake’s More Life (505,000 units; 225,000 album sales).

With his eighth No. 1, Eminem is now tied with Kenny Chesney, Madonna and U2 for the sixth-most leaders in the history of the chart. Ahead of them are The Beatles (with 19), JAY-Z (14), Bruce Springsteen and Barbra Streisand (each with 11), Elvis Presley (10), and Garth Brooks and The Rolling Stones (both with nine).

Elsewhere in the top 10 of the chart, rappers G-Eazy and Jeezy both bow in the top 10 with their newest efforts, The Beautiful & Damned and Pressure, respectively.

At No. 2 on the new Billboard 200, Taylor Swift’s former leader, Reputation, holds at No. 2 with 133,000 units (up 33 percent). Of that figure, 105,000 were in pure album sales. With one week left in Nielsen Music’s 2017 tracking year, Reputation has now sold 1.82 million copies.

G-Eazy debuts at No. 3 with The Beautiful & Damned, marking his third top 10 in a row, and total. The album, which is his third full-length major label studio effort, enters with 122,000 units (68,000 in traditional album sales). He previously hit the top 10 with When It’s Dark Out (No. 5 in 2015) and These Things Happen (No. 3 in 2014).

G-Eazy’s new album is currently enjoying a hit single with “No Limit,” featuring A$AP Rocky and Cardi B. The track reached the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 dated Dec. 16, granting G-Eazy his second top 10, following “My, Myself & I” with Bebe Rexha.

Ed Sheeran’s ÷ (Divide) dips from No. 3 to No. 4 on the Billboard 200 with 90,000 units (though it’s up 29 percent), while Pentatonix’s A Pentatonix Christmas shifts from No. 4 to No. 5 with 75,000 units (up 12 percent).

Jeezy logs his ninth top 10 album with Pressure, which debuts at No. 6 with 72,000 units (54,000 in traditional album sales). The rapper has yet to miss the top 10 with a charting album, stretching back to his debut on the list, 2005’s Let’s Get It: Thug Motivation 101, which peaked at No. 2. Among his nine top 10s are three No. 1s: The Inspiration (2006), The Recession (2008) and Trap or Die 3 (2016).

Rounding out the new top 10: Sam Smith’s The Thrill of It All rises 8-7 (60,000 units; up 30 percent), Luke Bryan’s What Makes You Country falls 1-8 in its second week (48,000 units; down 55 percent), Garth Brooks’ The Anthology: Part I, The First Five Years ascends 12-9 (46,000 units; up 29 percent) and Chris Stapleton’s From A Room: Volume 2 drops 7-10 (45,000 units; down 2 percent).

With “Revival’s” No. 1 debut, he’s the first act in history to have eight chart entries in a row bow at No. 1.

As previously reported, Eminem’s Revival debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, granting the artist a record eighth consecutive bow at No. 1. The set starts atop the list with 267,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending Dec. 21, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 197,000 were in traditional album sales.

Eminem is the first act in the history of the Billboard 200 chart with eight consecutive chart entries to bow at No. 1. He previously opened at No. 1 with his last seven releases: The Marshall Mathers LP (2013), Recovery (2010), Relapse (2009), the best-of set Curtain Call: The Hits (2005), Encore (2004), The Eminem Show (2002) and The Marshall Mathers LP (2000). His only charting effort to miss the top was his major label debut album, The Slim Shady LP, which topped out at No. 2 in 1999.

While no other act has seen eight charting sets in a row debut at No. 1, there are three acts have achieved honorable feats with eight No. 1s.

JAY-Z: The superstar mogul has seen his last 11 solo studio albums debut at No. 1, from 1998’s Vol. 2… Hard Knock Life through his latest release, 2017’s 4:44. Sprinkled among those chart toppers are three further collaborative sets that opened atop the list: Watch the Throne, with Kanye West; MTV Ultimate Mash-Ups Presents: Collision Course, with Linkin Park; and Unfinished Business, with R. Kelly.

Breaking up JAY-Z’s hot streak between 1998 and the present are seven charting titles that did not reach No. 1. Among those: his first collaboration effort with R. Kelly (The Best of Both Worlds, peaking at No. 2), a best-of album (Hits Collection: Volume One, No. 43), a live set (Live in Brooklyn, No. 36) and even an acapella title (The Black Album: Acapella, No. 106).

The Beatles: The Fab Four is the only other act to have eight chart entries in-a-row all hit No. 1 -- though none of the eight debuted at No. 1. The band topped the list eight consecutive times between 1965 and 1968 with Beatles IV, Help!, Rubber Soul, Yesterday and Today, Revolver, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, Magical Mystery Tour and their self-titled set, also known as The White Album. All eight of those albums debuted at a lower position on the chart, and then climbed to No. 1.

As noted above, the group has a record 19 No. 1s on the chart. (Note: the first album to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 was Elton John’s Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy in 1975. Only six albums bowed at No. 1 before May of 1991, when Billboard began using Nielsen Music’s electronically monitored point-of-sale purchase information to power the Billboard 200 chart. From that point forward, the vast majority of albums that reached No. 1 did so by debuting at No. 1. The influx of No. 1 debuts -- as compared to pre-1991 -- is owed to the chart’s increased accuracy thanks to Nielsen Music point-of-sale data.

The Rolling Stones: Between 1971 and 1981, all eight of the band’s studio albums reached No. 1-- from 1971’s Sticky Fingers through 1981’s Tattoo You. Like JAY-Z, the Stones’ domination at No. 1 was halted by a number of non-studio sets. In that span of time, the band clocked six further charting albums that did not top the list, including the greatest hits sets Hot Rocks 1964-1971 (No. 4 in 1971) and Made in the Shade (No. 6 in 1975), and the live album Love You Live (No. 5, 1977).

Considering how popular the Beatles were during the 1960s, I'm surprised they never debuted at the top of the top 200 chart. The demand was there for their music. We had to wait until the mid 1970s for Elton John to make history.

Billboard 200 Chart Moves: 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' Soundtrack & The Beatles' 'Christmas' Debut

Now, let’s take a closer look at some of the action on the rest of the Billboard 200:

— Soundtrack, Star Wars: The Last Jedi – No. 12 — The soundtrack to Star Wars: The Last Jedi bows at No. 12 with 44,000 units (41,000 in traditional album sales). All eight of the main Star Wars saga films have seen their companion soundtracks reach the top 20. The lowest-charting title of the bunch is Return of the Jedi, peaking at No. 20 in 1983. The remaining six Star Wars film soundtracks have all hit the top 10, though none have reached No. 1. (The closest the series came was with the first film, Star Wars, which saw its album spend three consecutive weeks at No. 2 in 1977. It was stuck behind Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours, which ruled the list for 31 nonconsecutive weeks.)

The last Star Wars saga film, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, saw its soundtrack debut and peak at No. 5 in January of 2016.

Following The Force Awakens, the soundtrack to the stand-alone film Rogue One: A Star Wars story, reached No. 29 in January of 2017.

— Linkin Park, One More Light: Live – No. 28 — The rock band claims its 15th charting album with this new live set, recorded before the death of the group’s singer, Chester Bennington. The set was recorded during Linkin Park’s tour of Europe in June and July of 2017. Bennington died on July 20.

Earlier in 2017, Linkin Park notched its sixth No. 1 album with the studio effort One More Light.


— Alan Jackson, Precious Memories Collection – No. 33 — The country king scores his 25th top 40-charting album with this compilation of inspirational songs, as Precious Memories Collection rises 162-33 with 22,000 units (up 255 percent). The album — which is a collection of the tunes found on his two earlier Precious Memories albums — is supported nearly entirely by traditional album sales (22,000; up 272 percent). The rise is owed to a big gain in sales through mail order and internet retailers, powered by direct-response TV ads that have been airing over the holiday season.

The Precious Memories Collection features all 36 songs that were included on Jackson’s 2006 set Precious Memories, and its sequel, 2013’s Precious Memories: Volume II. The Collection title also includes two new tracks: “It’s All About Him” and “That’s the Way.”

— Soundtrack, Pitch Perfect 3 – No. 61 — The soundtrack to the third installment of the Pitch Perfect film series debuts at No. 61 with 15,000 units (14,000 in traditional album sales). As the film arrived in U.S. theaters on Dec. 22 — the day after the chart’s tracking week ended — the soundtrack could rise on next week’s tally. The first Pitch Perfect soundtrack peaked at No. 3 in February 2012, while Pitch Perfect 2 debuted at No. 1 in 2015.

— The Beatles, The Christmas Records – No. 199 — The Beatles’ new box set of colored vinyl singles, The Christmas Records, arrives at No. 199 with 7,000 units (all from traditional album sales). The archival box has reproductions of the seven flexi-disc vinyl singles the band sent to its fan club members each Christmas between 1963 and 1969. The set, which has a total combined running time of about 44 minutes, features a smattering of music from the band (including the original tune “Christmas Time [Is Here Again]”), comedic skits and messages from the group. The Christmas Records also debuts at No. 4 on the Vinyl Albums chart and, due to the nature of the box’s contents, at No. 38 on the Holiday Albums tally.
