'The Greatest Showman' Soundtrack Spends Second Week at No. 1 on Billboard 200 Chart

The soundtrack to the musical drama film The Greatest Showman scores a second week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, as the set earned 104,000 equivalent album units (down 3 percent) in the week ending Jan. 11, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 70,000 were in traditional album sales (down 10 percent).

The Greatest Showman is just the fifth soundtrack in the last 10 years to spend multiple weeks at No. 1.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new Jan. 20-dated chart (where The Greatest Showman spends a second week at No. 1) will be posted in full on Billboard’s websites on Wednesday, Jan. 17 (one day later than normal, due to the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday on Jan. 15).

In the past 10 years, 21 soundtracks have hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart and, of those, just five have netted multiple weeks atop the list: The Greatest Showman (two, so far), Suicide Squad: The Album (two, in 2016), Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Mix Vol. 1 (two, 2014), Frozen (13, 2014) and Glee: The Music, Volume 3 -- Showstoppers (two, 2010). The last live action musical released in movie theaters to see its soundtrack notch more than a week at No. 1 was the Dreamgirls album, with two weeks in the penthouse back in 2007.

Since The Greatest Showman’s release in theaters on Dec. 20, the movie has earned an estimated $95 million at the U.S. and Canada box office, according to Box Office Mojo.

The Greatest Showman album features performances by the movie’s stars, including Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron, Zendaya and Michelle Williams. Four songs from the album debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 chart dated Jan. 13, led by “This Is Me,” by Keala Settle and the film’s ensemble.

Back on the new Billboard 200 chart, Ed Sheeran’s ÷ (Divide) holds at No. 2 with 53,000 units (down 21 percent), while G-Eazy’s The Beautiful & Damned returns to its peak (and debut position) at No. 3 with 38,000 units (down 10 percent).

Bruno Mars’ 24K Magic hits its highest rank in eight months, and returns to the top 10 after more than four months, climbing 15-4 with 37,000 units (up 75 percent). The set’s rises is driven by the strong start of its new single, “Finesse,” which has been boosted by a new remix with rapper Cardi B. (The remix is merged with the original version of "Finesse," and contributes to the SEA and TEA units of the song's parent album, as most remixes do.)

The album has not ranked this high since the April 22, 2017-dated list, when it placed at No. 4; and has not been in the top 10 since Sept. 2, 2017, when it was No. 10. The album debuted and peaked at No. 2 on the Dec. 10, 2016 chart.

Post Malone’s Stoney ascends 8-5 on the latest Billboard 200, with nearly 37,000 units (down 6 percent), Taylor Swift’s Reputation falls 3-6 with a little over 36,000 units (down 24 percent) and Eminem’s Revival dips 6-7 with 36,000 units (down 11 percent). Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN. slides 5-8 with 35,000 units (down 15 percent), Huncho Jack’s Huncho Jack, Jack Huncho is steady at No. 9 with 32,000 units (down 17 percent), and Sam Smith’s The Thrill of It All climbs back into the top 10, rising 12-10 with 29,000 units (up 5 percent).

The next chart's projected to be ~50K or more for the top seller. Is Fall Out Boy's Jan. 19 release a studio album? Maybe we won't see a new Nielsen-era low for the top seller in January. There doesn't look to be a big release on Jan. 26, but that will be February's chart. :)

Lana Del Rey's 'Born to Die' Becomes One of Only Three Albums by Women With 300 Weeks on Billboard 200 Chart

The 2012 album joins Adele's "21" & Carole King's "Tapestry."

Lana Del Rey becomes just the third woman in the history of the Billboard 200 chart to have an album spend at least 300 weeks on the survey. Her Born to Die clocks its 300th frame on the latest tally (dated Jan. 20), rising 148-141.

Since the Billboard 200 began publishing on a regular weekly basis in 1956, only two other albums by women have notched at least 300 weeks on the chart: Carole King's Tapestry (318 weeks) and Adele's 21 (359 weeks). Tapestry bowed in 1971 and spent 15 weeks at No. 1, and 21 arrived in 2011 and logged 24 weeks at the summit, the most for an album by a solo female.

Born to Die, Del Rey's debut full-length, bowed and peaked at No. 2 on the chart dated Feb. 18, 2012. The set has earned 3 million equivalent album units through Jan. 11, according to Nielsen Music, with 1.5 million of that sum in traditional album sales. The album is currently mostly powered by on-demand audio streams of its songs; in the latest tracking week (ending Jan. 11), it scored 5.5 million streams for its tracks.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). (The chart transitioned from a traditional album sales ranking to a consumption-based tally in late 2014.)

The all-time longevity champ on the Billboard 200 remains Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon, with a whopping 937 weeks on the tally to date. It's far ahead of the No. 2 title, Bob Marley and The Wailers' Legend: The Best Of…, with 504 weeks. The rest of the top five titles with the most weeks on the chart: Journey's Greatest Hits (494); Johnny Mathis' Johnny's Greatest Hits (490); and the My Fair Lady original cast recording (480).

Note: From May 25, 1991, until Dec. 5, 2009, older albums, often referred to as catalog albums, were generally barred from charting on the Billboard 200 if they fell below No. 100 on the list. Instead, they would chart on the separate Top Catalog Albums chart. Starting with the Dec. 5, 2009-dated Billboard 200, catalog albums returned to the chart, making it easier for titles, like 21 and Born to Die, to rack up significantly long runs on the list.

^I'm surprised that album in particular managed to be the third one to get to that milestone, although I guess the existence of the Catalog Albums chart probably negated albums by some other female the opportunity to have that album. That said, it's quite amazing that the album has remained in the Billboard 200 as much as it has since streaming was introduced, which is most of the time the album since the album was released.

Now, let’s take a closer look at some of the action on the rest of the Billboard 200:

— Dua Lipa, Dua Lipa – No. 35 — Seven months after its release, Dua Lipa’s self-titled debut album reaches the top 40 on the Billboard 200 for the first time, climbing 43-35. The set rises with a 9 percent increase in equivalent album units earned for the week ending Jan. 11 (climbing to 12,000), according to Nielsen Music. The set is one of only 11 titles to see a gain within the top 40.

Lipa’s album continues to profit from the breakout success of its single “New Rules,” which holds at No. 7 on the Radio Songs chart (90.2 million in audience in the week ending Jan. 14) and is steady at No. 4 on the Pop Songs airplay chart (up 12 percent in detections at the format). The song is also on the verge of hitting the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100, as it is stationary at No. 11 for a second week (though still gaining in overall points).

Dua Lipa bowed on the Billboard 200 dated June 24, 2017, at No. 86 and fell off the chart the next week, only to return on the July 29 list. It has been slowly climbing the chart ever since.

In total, the album has earned 310,000 equivalent album units, of which just 27,000 are in traditional album sales. (In fact, Dua Lipa has spent just one week on the Top Album Sales chart: its debut frame, at No. 50.) Most of the album’s popularity has come from streaming services, as Dua Lipa has yielded 340 million on-demand audio streams for its tracks, with 164 million of those owed to “New Rules.”

— Sam Smith, The Thrill of It All – No. 10 — Sam Smith’s The Thrill of It All returns to the top 10 (12-10) thanks in part to sales generated by a concert ticket/album bundle redemption promotion. The album rises with 29,000 units (up 5 percent), of which 13,000 were in traditional album sales (up 22 percent). Though most sales affiliated with a ticket/album bundle offer tend to occur during an album’s release week, it’s not unusual to see spikes in sales from bundles later in an album’s life span. This usually happens when reminder email blasts are sent to ticket buyers who have yet to redeem their album, thus prompting a concentrated rush in redemption sales.

— Soundtrack, Moana – No. 37 — The soundtrack to the film Moana has proven to be a sturdy performer on the Billboard 200 chart over the past year. The album, which has spent all but one of its 60 chart weeks inside the top 50, moves 35-37 on the latest chart with 12,000 equivalent album units earned (down 7 percent), according to Nielsen Music. In total, the album has generated 1.6 million equivalent album units, with 912,000 of those in traditional album sales.

— Michael Jackson, The Essential Michael Jackson – No. 51 — Jackson’s best-of, along with a number of greatest-hits compilations on the chart, profit from special pricing and promotion at digital retailers. The album re-enters the list at No. 51 with 10,000 units (up 139 percent).

— Led Zeppelin, Mothership – No. 92 — Like Michael Jackson’s Essential album (see above), Led Zeppelin’s greatest hits album Mothership gains following promotion at digital retail. The set zooms 182-92 with 7,000 units (up 45 percent), with album sales equaling 2,000 of that sum (up 42 percent).
