And while I am in here being Miss Contrary, Earthquake is kind of underrated. Its main drawback is just that it was literally a decade too late...very dated. But still fun, in a silly way.

I co-sign on this "Ride & Shake" appreciation! I wonder what would've been the third single from Fear of Flying had they not done the re-issue with "Free" and "Again & Again". I always thought "Takin' Me Over" was a missed single opportunity! I'm still salty about that unnecessary re-release when the original FOF had several more records that would've made perfect singles. If "Free" wasn't one of the songs that was on the re release I would agree with you completely. If I remember correctly "Free" didn't do very well though but was played on MtV some. I LOVED it but it did bring the project to a near halt if if I remember. I also remember really liking "That's Why I Wanna Fight" and I had a weird obsession with "Now Or Never" a little. lol. There were so many good songs from "Fear Of Flying. It should have been a bigger hit.

Free did peak at #11 on Rhythmic and it did well internationally but following her biggest hit ever in America (Case of the Ex), it didn't do much to keep the momentum going. There honestly wasn't anything as crossover-friendly as COTE to follow up with IMO so I can see why the label wanted to take a chance with Free but I still think that Ride & Shake, That's Why I Wanna Fight or even Can't Believe (if they wanted to try a ballad) would've had more success - at least at Urban radio (for reference, Free stalled at 52 on R&B/Hip-Hop and 42 on the Hot 100).

Free did great at pop radio and on MTV's TRL. Starting with Case of the Ex, her label geared her singles more towards mainstream radio than rhythmic which explain Free underperformance on the Hot R&B/HipHop Singles chart. (In the process urban radio stopped playing her singles as much too. She lost her momentum at urban radio) However, Free performed modestly well internationally. It peaked within the top 10 in Australia, top 20 in the U.K., top 40 in Ireland, Scotland, etc.
Fear of Flying remains Mya's most commercially successful album to date internationally. It sold approximately 3-4 million worldwide. An old press release from 2001 said she sold 6 million albums worldwide combined with her debut.

All the more reason why they should've worked harder to try and regain some momentum but, to be fair, her debut album is the only album of hers I felt was properly handled. Don't even get me started on Moodring. >

BONUS: "Bye Bye" feat. Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott
Ahead of this afternoon's reveals, jam to this deep cut from Mýa self-titled album! For whatever reason, Missy's feature wasn't credited on the album packaging so it seems like casual fans aren't as aware that the two of them worked together prior to Lady Marmalade and Wo.

"Earthquake" was one of two songs I hadn't heard before and with good reason, I see. Bye.
Everything looks good so far but if you guys let that Rugrat ass song get into the top 20 I will forever be judging you.

I like that song! For someone who is so openly anti-children I have the oddest nostalgic attachment to childlike things.

Maybe I could have ranked it max 5 spots higher...just don't tell me its in your top 10 of all Mya songs.............

No, no, not that high. Closer than I recalled placing it tho (and frankly closer than it should be, I can concede). I myself probably could have bumped it down a few spots and still been okay with it.

Num.11 at Rythmic is pretty good. Any idea about CHR/Top 40 because that's what I think they were going for along with Rythmic. "Free" didn't sound urban at all. They should have or did they go with something else there? I was always hoping for my second favorite on the cd "How You Gonna Tell Me".

Should also add this has five bottom-5 rankers and yet this song never stayed in the bottom 5. I thought it would be more of the polarizing records included.

but hmm, something with both multiple top 10s and multiple bottom fives...that sounds like it would be one of her more recent releases.

Things went downhill from there.

but hmm, something with both multiple top 10s and multiple bottom fives...that sounds like it would be one of her more recent releases. If you count 2006 as "recent"... "Ayo!" was a promo single released in September 2006 and Mýa's first release on Motown. It was intended to be the first single from Liberation yet ended up cut from the final track list. It samples He's the Wizard from The Wiz and, despite no real push from the label, it still managed to peak at #70 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop chart (her second to last record to chart).
I remember how split fans were over this track when it first dropped but I've always thought it was a nice nod to her D.C. roots and one of those jams that suits her voice and personality perfectly!

Damn Shooter you were just three posts away! But yeah, I was thinking 'post major record label' when I said recent, so that works I guess.
(Let's not pretend that deal with Motown was legit. Ugh.)

Fun fact: the top-3 songs with the lowest SDs are in the top-10 while the 4th lowest comes in next at #24! It's another 2010s single release with no top-10 rankings and three bottom-5 rankings (*insert eye roll*).
