My own low-ish rank aside, it takes a special kind of fucked up to let a bop with a Wayne verse in TWO THOUSAND AND SEVEN flop. LIKE MOTOWN WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING WITH YOUR BITCH ASS.
I'll forever wonder what could have been if she'd stuck it out with A&M and released Control Freak.

I know major labels do artists dirty on the regular but the fact Ron Fair and Sylvia Rhone both f#cked her over is maddening especially because the quality of the material was not the issue at hand.

#11 has the HIGHEST STANDARD DEVIATION of the whole rankdown and was literally ONE POINT AWAY from gaining a top-10 slot. Kanenrá:ke's ranking knocked it out the top-10 and DistrictTwelve and Albie's rankings brought it back to the brink of top-10 status. It ended up with five bottom-five rankings vs. TEN top-10 rankings.
Wild guess what it is?!

I should've added that a #2 and a #3 will be lost while 4 people ranked this dead last... :kii:

^The only thing keeping me from guessing my own #2 (my #3 already bit the dust lol) is that nothing about that particular song seems that polarizing. I'd expect it to sort of middle out rather than split people. I could be entirely wrong though, who knows.

"Ghetto Supastar" was the second single released from the Bulworth soundtrack and it's safe to say that the success of the record eclipsed the movie itself. Back when he was doing some good for her career, Ron Fair successfully lobbied to get Mýa featured on the track; ODB asked to be on the record after he mistakenly burst into the wrong recording session and the rest is history.
I've always liked it but never loved it and was pretty surprised it ended up being this polarizing since several people suggested it be added after the fact and half of the participants actually ranked it in their top-10!

Finally! I had a literal WTF reaction when I first listened to this and heard Mya singing the chorus to "Islands in the Stream." That's one of my least favorite of Dolly Parton's big hits because it's a total campy ball of cheese, and I definitely only liked it less here.

Ah, so my first instinct was indeed the right one.
Mya is easily what made GS the hit it became which says a lot considering a) she was nobody at the time (a bit of an exaggeration, but still, she'd just scored her first hit, so she was hardly established) and b) the hook was almost 100% lifted from its Islands in the Stream sample, with just a couple of lyric changes. But I don't know if there is anyone else at that time that could have carried the song the way Mya did.
If Halle Berry had not been in the video I'm not sure anyone would have known that was from a soundtrack lol.

The middle school nostalgia I'm getting from #11, #15-#17.
I listened to the original version of "Take Me There" for the first time in forever. What a jam! I thought the "Want U Back" remix was so unnecessary at the time. The last ten years, I preferred that version over the original only because it feels happier and upbeat.
Ready for the Top 10.

Pretty much agree with everyone who said that Lock U Down is a jam and should've been a hit for her. I've never liked Ghetto Superstar.
Since the rankdown started, Fear of Flying has made its way back into my car, and I seriously every song on that album.

I remember the video. I think they had also performed this song at the 1998 VMAs, if I'm not mistaken.

Ready for Whatever - Definitely deserves a Top 10 placements. It's one of her better and strongest songs/singles since going independent.
Lock U Down - Nice song but her weakest 1st single from any of her major label studio albums. It is an improvement over Ayo! slightly. Without the guitar riff, it's just another typical Scott Storch production.
Ghetto Supastar - A bit surprise this didn't make into the Top 10. Most people associate this song as her own and most people are familiar with Mya through this song.
Sidenote: I'm shocked at how many people actually like/use Free. It's sadly one of Mya's most forgotten singles, imo.

First Time/No Tears on My Pillow > Again & Again I actually burned a CD with everything on it! The re-issue track order with No Tears and For The First Time placed in between Ride & Shake and the outro. Free and For the First Time are both in my top 5 Mya tracks and absolutely essential, so I’m pissed there was never a version of the album that had both songs. EDIT: That’s a flawless top ten, I must say. So happy that Coolin’ is the highest of her independent singles.

Well I was hoping my #30 would go out before the top 10, but I knew it'd be a lock so hopefully it goes out soon.

BONUS: "Elevator" feat. Smoove Jones
One of my favorite joints from her Grammy nominated Smoove Jones album released on V-Day 2016! Although I knew there was no way she was winning against Lalah Hathaway, I was ecstatic that her many years of independent grinding and networking did pay off with that kind of recognition. Really makes me wonder what she could still accomplish if she actually joined forces with a label again.

And just to tease the #10, as I mentioned before, it was only 1 point ahead of Ghetto Supastar! Albie gave it just enough of a boost to secure its top-10 status. It's a solo Mya track with the 7th highest SD; only 2 people were cruel enough to rank it in their bottom 5 while six of us ranked it top-10. Sadly, of the six, someone else will lose their #1 here.
