Madonna at 64 doesn't care about charts anymore. She can easily book the biggest names in the industry if she wants, she doesn't want that. Madonna doesn't listen to commercial pop music and Madame X reflected that. Some fans should stop expecting another Confessions album from her.

We all love lists- or, love debating then, hating them, whatever tickles the fancy. :) Consequence of Sound last did a list in 2010- and Madonna was not included. Thus, it's a good thing that, this time, she IS, at No. 66. We can complain that she should be ranked higher, not ranked lower than another female, etc., etc. But, I'd advise just to be glad she is present, in this ever-shifting landscape where her work is still being remembered/'cited. consequence.net/2022/09/best-albums-all-time-list/5/?vgo_ee=cXWoZpSEmaRG0Kfp7NJ3UnwFoqDlMHNmyq65fGLdufk=66. Madonna - Like a PrayerLike a Prayer was where Ms. Ciccone made the leap across the borderline from pop star to artist. Madonna’s previous three albums were multi-platinum, hit-spewing smashes, and she was an MTV icon; still, any substance was overshadowed by the glitz and froth that came with being a Material Girl. But Madonna came into Like a Prayer with more than just blonde ambition — hell, she even dyed her hair brown for the occasion. As she approached 30 and saw her brief marriage to Sean Penn fail, Madonna opened up her journals and her heart for a surprisingly confessional and, of course, provocative set of songs that called for a reevaluation of her merit on artistic terms. She dug in for ruminations on the death of her mother (“Promise to Try”); her troubled relationships with her dad (“Oh Father”) and family (“Keep it Together”); the marriage (“‘Till Death Do Us Part”); and, in Like a Prayer’s title track, her conflicted perspective on the Catholicism in which she was raised. She’d found a grounding from which to purge a lot of demons, but she also made that cathartic exercise sound celebratory with mature and sophisticated songcraft (assisted by longtime collaborators Stephen Bray and Patrick Leonard and, on several songs, Prince) that touched on gospel (“Like a Prayer”), Stax soul (“Express Yourself”), and ‘60s girl-group pop (“Cherish”). From here on, Madonna would be taken seriously as a songwriter as well as a vanguard for a legion of artists who felt permission to, well, express themselves in the wake of Like a Prayer. — G. Graff

In 1992, the album debuted at the top of charts around the world and has gone on to sell more than six million copies. To celebrate the anniversary, a limited edition 12” vinyl picture disc featuring the album’s title track will finally see the light of day after a three-decade delay. Madonna will also release a new remix of her global dance smash “Hung Up” featuring Tokischa next Friday, September 16. The collaboration was premiered with a live performance by the duo at Madonna’s Pride event at Terminal 5 in New York in June celebrating her career-spanning remix collection Finally Enough Love: 50 Number Ones. Originally scheduled for release during the fall of 1992, the "Erotica" picture disc features a colorized version of the famous “toe sucking” photo taken from Madonna’s Sex book, which was released the same week as the Erotica album. However, the picture disc was cancelled unexpectedly just ahead of release, as the visual was considered too explicit for in-store display back then. The manufactured copies were promptly destroyed, with only a few finding their way into the public’s hands, only adding to the infamous allure of the release. Now, after a 30-year wait, the “Erotica” picture disc is available now for pre-orders and is set for release on October 21 for $24.98.“Erotica” was the album’s first single and peaked at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100, where it spent 18 weeks on its way to earning gold certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). ““Erotica” was a major hit globally as well, topping the European Hot 100 Singles chart, climbing to #3 in the U.K., and was a Top Five hit in Australia and New Zealand. “Erotica” also reached #1 in the U.S. on Billboard’s Dance Club Songs and Dance Single Sales charts. A remixed version of the track is included on Madonna’s latest album, Finally Enough Love: 50 Number Ones. Released in August, the career-spanning compilation was curated by Madonna in celebration of her historic achievement as the first and only recording artist to have 50 #1 hits on any single Billboard chart. In 2020, she topped the Dance Club Songs chart for the 50th time with “I Don’t Search I Find.” Finally Enough Love: 50 Number Ones - available now on both streaming and physical formats - dominated album charts around the world following its release this summer. The album debuted at #1 on both the Billboard Top Album Sales and Top Current Album Sales charts. It peaked at #8 on the Billboard Top 200, making Madonna the first female artist with Top 10 albums on the Billboard 200 in each of the last five decades, adding another landmark achievement to her long list of accolades. The album also debuted at #1 on the Billboard Top Dance/Electronic Album and Vinyl Albums charts. Madonna’s meteoric rise began in the New York club scene and she has perpetually kept her finger on the pulse of dance and club culture across five decades. She has continued to collaborate with the most cutting-edge artists and DJs to reimagine her groundbreaking hits. As a result, Madonna has now achieved more remix albums on the Billboard 200 than any other artist. Finally Enough Love is also the highest charting remix album in over a decade. 50 Number Ones spans her entire dance club chart reign with dozens of remixes by the world’s top producers. In addition to fan favorites, the collection also includes a selection of rare remix recordings, with more than 20 being officially released for the first time or making their commercial/digital debut. “Erotica” Picture Disc Track Listing Side A 1. “Erotica” – Album Version Side B 1. “Erotica” – Instrumental 2. “Erotica” – Radio Edit

People give so much importance to those lists then make a fuss. Who cares about a Madonna album making a random magazine's top 100? Like A Prayer era was an event, an event today's pop girls can't even see in their dreams. It elevated Madonna to become a more respected artist.

I'm a little disappointed the picture disc is just the single. I so badly want a vinyl of the album, but I want to wait and see what kind of expanded anniversary edition she cooks up with Warner Bros.
(Hopefully w/ Goodbye to Innocence)

It's really cool to release that picture disc though. It's one of those Madonna holy grails that goes for thousands of dollars, now everyone can nab it.
I admittedly was hoping for something a little more substantial for the 30th anniversary though. The Erotica re-issue is the one I want the most. I wonder if she'll release them in order or hop around throughout her discography.

It was stated on multiple occasions that there would be album reissues, so if they don't do that... lol That's one reason I haven't purchased upgraded vinyls of any of the studio albums that have been released thus far.

She's also brought back the Rebecca Carlson look, aka shaved eyebrows? Or are they covered?

I just zoomed a picture from a party last night. It seems she has actually dyed her eyebrows blonde, not shaved them.

Spree is right about the artists Madonna chooses to collaborate with. She seems to be choosing these people who are up and comers, but they haven't gotten up and come yet (sheesh that was an awful pun). She doesn't have the pull anymore where streaming or radio would turn her songs into a hit. The artists she is choosing to work with don't have that pull yet either, so why bother?
Elton John just struck while the iron is hot. His duet with Dua Lipa was at the perfect time, plus it did something really creative. They took his songs and his lyrics and modernized it. Also, his duet with Britney benefited from the fact that there is huge public sympathy for her and the public was craving new music from her. I am surprised Madonna's feature on Levitating didn't do anything, but I am thinking that she didn't really stand out in the mix. It took me a couple of listens to realize we transitioned from Dua to Madonna. I personally loved the sped up mix.
Maybe she needs to do a feature with Harry Styles, Lizzo, etc. Someone who is hot in the moment and she doesn't have to take under her wing. I do not think she is cut out to features with rap stars. It is just not who she is and it comes across so contrived. She is pure pop and does best there. Also, she seems slightly behind the curve and playing catchup. She takes so long to get these remixes or duets out there. It took her far too long to capitalize on the Frozen viral trend and then she kept releasing mixes when the trend was already over.

I just don't understand what she's doing right now. None of it makes any real sense beyond "oh she's just having fun". But you can have fun behind closed doors. When you involve cameras from every angle and video shoots and IG filters you open yourself up to interpretation. Sometimes I feel like she's doing all this on purpose cuz she knows nobody likes it. But I guess she's always been that way, only back then she was younger and getting radio play. Now that the mainstream success is gone it seems the only thing left is the shock value. Which is fine, but my selfishness wants more "Something to Remember" Madonna than "Bitch, I'm Madonna"...Madonna. the remix album is fabulous tho. Can't argue with that.

My interest in the WBR re-issue campaign is to get rare mixes, discarded songs, early demos etc. I honestly hope it is not a series of re-issue campaigns focused on vinyl. Vinyl is mainly a niche format for collectors. I am not a collector and want the music in the most convenient way. Right now, I know that they have mainly focused on re-issuing some maxi-singles, picture discs, and record store day stuff. For me, it is interesting to see that there is a 12" picture disc of Erotica, but not that exciting as I already have the music contained on it.
Yes, I know we got FEL and it got some good attention, but it contained almost entirely stuff that had been out there already. As Madge said "I want more!"
I am very interested to see what they do when they finally focus on each studio album. Will it be just remasters? The original album and include all the mixes for each single? Original album + demos? I am eager to see what they do.

August- had M been featured on the regular version of "Levitating," and had that version been promoted, it would have done something notable, most likely. :) That club album of FN was not much of a project- maybe M was not pleased that her version was not going to be promoted to radio and such. Hence, the no-show appearance in the remix video.
