Getting close to the anniversary of the release of Madame X. So almost a year after, how do you now consider this album among all her albums. One of your favorites? One of the best? Indifferent? I liked it a lot more than some of her later ones like Hard Candy, MDNA, and Rebel Heart. I did like all of those as a whole, but I felt the last two didn't feel cohesive. Madame X had a similar sound running through it and it felt like a complete body of work.

I probably haven't been listening to M music as much as I would like lately, though I do enjoy the MX album. Weakest spots for me (15-track version) are the Anita and "Loca" tracks.

It has some of her best songs in a while, the Madame X album, I also think the lead single was her best since “Hung Up,” even if I don’t listen to it anymore. Overall I wouldn’t call it a crappy album like MDNA or Hard Candy, but I would rank it below all of her 80’s albums for sure. Maybe above Erotica and Bedtime Stories. The song I revisit the most I think is “I Don’t Search I Find”.

I have to say, none of Madonna's albums after Confessions on a Dancefloor have had that non-stop repeat experience for me. When they first come out, I of course listen to them repeatedly for about a week, then it tapers off and I tend to play the single that is out at that moment. Then rarely ever revisit after that. They have all been missing that huge juggernaut of a song that brings me to that magical place. Confessions was like that through every single song. The entire album felt like this journey that lifted me up and kept it at that euphoric state.
Hard Candy started out pretty strong with "4 Minutes" and "Give it 2 Me" which felt cool and timely (though now it sounds dated). But it was filled with such starts and stops, that I eventually lost interest. Spanish Lesson makes me cringe.
MDNA was more fun to me because it had a few songs on there that really took me there. I loved Girl Gone Wild, Addicted, Love Spent, and the mixes of Give Me All You Luvin;...but then the rest sort of dropped off for me.
Rebel Heart had a lot of promise when I first heard the demo version of the title track. It felt uplifting and I loved how it chugged along. Then when it came out, she basically stripped the life out of it from the demo, just to change it up. That entire album had moments of greatness and big moments of "she should have cut this out." It was such an overloaded album, that felt like she kept every song she had demoed because so much of the good stuff had already leaked. If I ever revisit it (and its rare) I only listen to the playlist I made of the album that takes out all the songs that just do not sound like her.
Madame X is a weird one for me. It feels like such a sidestep of a concept album to me. Like when an artist decides they are going to do an album of standards or covers and it sounds out of place and not really part of their studio album catalog. I rarely revisit. That being said, I did enjoy Medellin, Dark Ballet, Funana, Batuka. But other than that, I am just not into it. It is an album that I could not recite from memory all the track, whereas, I could do that for most of her other albums. The thing about this album is I stopped listening to it at all after maybe a week or two. I then focused on when a remix EP came out or a new video, but as for sitting and listening to the album, rarely after the initial release.

She posted topless photos on Instagram today Yeah that is an old photo, about 10 years old. It was from when she was doing that photoshoot with Jesus Luz wearing Victoria Beckham. I forget what magazine it was for.

It depends on what I am listening to and where I am. If I am in my home office and want to listen to a specific playlist or some obscure Broadway album or bootleg remixes, then through my iTunes library. Otherwise, I stream on my Alexa or phone with Spotify or Amazon music. In my car, it varies completely. I have Apple Carplay, so I have easy access to both spotify and itunes. However, where I live, barely anyone drives, so thats not too often. This is my edit of Rebel Heart:

I don't have Madame X yet, but I've listened to some of the songs on Youtube and it was very different from her previous albums. There were less dance songs. I thought Rebel Heart was decent. I never liked MDNA from the very start, and I still consider that one to be her weakest of all her albums. So I'll probably rank Madame X after Rebel Heart and above MDNA. Hard Candy was a good, fun album. I thought Candy Shop amd Heartbeat were highly addicting tracks. . I consider her 80s and 90s albums to be her greatest work, and where her aristry was at its peak.

I think it’s because I always just thought of it as a soundtrack album when I was a kid, and never realized all the songs were by her.

Some IB trivia- three of the songs are by Sondheim, while another, "Now (I'm Following You)" - both parts - was not written by her. Aside from "Vogue," a Ciccone-Pettibone track, and "I'm Going Bananas," the remaining five are Ciccone-Leonard compositions. M co-produced all tracks.
I remember an article in TV Guide reported that NIFY would be the third single, though that never materialized.
The album was a nice turn for her- though I'm sure some who heard "Vogue" and expected the album to be of a similar nature were left perplexed.

I remember an article in TV Guide reported that NIFY would be the third single, though that never materialized. The album was a nice turn for her- though I'm sure some who heard "Vogue" and expected the album to be of a similar nature were left perplexed. Madonna gave a great interview in Interview magazine in 1989, discussing Like a Prayer and recording the I'm Breathless album. Here is the section on Dick Tracy / I'm Breathless: Becky Johnson: Have you spent the last couple of weeks preparing for the role? Madonna: In terms of Breathless Mahoney, I’ve probably been preparing for the role all my life. [laughs] But superficially, yes… I mean, I had to dye my hair, pluck my eyebrows, have a lot of fittings. Stephen Sondheim is writing songs of the period for the film, so I’ve been working on them, and they’re quite difficult. Becky Johnson: Why’s that? Madonna: Because Stephen Sondheim writes in a kind of chromatic wildness. They’re difficult songs to learn. I mean one song is written with five sharps. They’re brilliant, but really complex. Becky Johnson: Are they mostly torch songs? Madonna: One is. There are three songs. One is a torch song and another is more up-tempo. It’s kind of like “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend” or “Material Girl,” where she keeps singing about how she wants more and more. It’s about gluttony. And it’s funny, it’s ironic. And then the third song is a kind of slow, sad song. I’m going to be singing it with Mandy Patinkin, who plays my accompanist at the nightclub where I work. It’s the kind of song you sing at three in the morning, when the club is empty. It’s very melancholy… just a piano and a voice. But they’re all really different for me, and so I’ve been working very hard to get them right. Becky Johnson: Do you feel this part is more demanding than a lot of other parts you’ve played? Madonna: [long pause] Yes and no. I’m different now from when I played those other parts, so everything is different for me. And I think there are a lot more subtleties to her character than it would seem on the surface. So in that respect it’s more demanding for me.

Also here is an article on the planned, but scrapped, release of "Now I'm Following You" as the third single from "I'm Breathless" www.madonnatribe.com/decade/2013/now-im-following-hanky-panky-2/‘I’m Breathless‘ remains Madonna’s most under-represented full studio (non-remix) album in terms of singles released. Even ‘Evita‘ and ‘Who’s That Girl‘ managed three singles internationally whereas ‘I’m Breathless’ only had two, the phenomenally successful ‘Vogue‘ and the cheeky ‘Hanky Panky‘. The reasons why the ‘I’m Breathless‘ promotion stalled are numerous. Time constraints regarding the release, the unavailability of Madonna thanks to the Blond Ambition Tour, and the general radio-unfriendly nature of the songs (although, in summer 1990, Madonna could have probably got drivel like ‘Cry Baby‘ into the Top Ten!). Well, it transpires that there was a third single planned from the album. ‘Now I’m Following You‘ the rather odd duet with Dick Tracy himself, Warren Beatty, was to be the final single from ‘I’m Breathless’, in it’s full two-part glory. Sire went to the trouble of commissioning remixes for the release and a host of 7″ Remixes were made to try and find a way of making the odd mix of styles that make up the album version(s) into a radio friendly mix. Five different ones were prepared, but in all honesty, they aren’t particularly inspiring and all that different from each other As you can see from this super rare Reference CD from September 1990, a Dance Mix was also prepared and considered for inclusion on the set. None of them have ever been released commercially. A further mix was commissioned – the Tiny Little Circles Mix which did slip out commercially, via the Razormaid DJ mailorder service where upcoming mixes are sent out to influential DJs to test reaction in clubs. The Mix was included on the 15th issue on lovely swirled mustard vinyl and a much rarer CD. I think most fans would probably agree that of all the songs on ‘I’m Breathless’, ‘Now I’m Following You‘ would not be top of their list for release as a single. Many of us probably expected the Dick Tracy unofficial theme song ‘Sooner Or Later‘ to see a single release, to showcase Madonna’s lovely torch song vocals. Still, with ‘Now I’m Following You’ taking a full slot on the tour the video would have been easy to sort although whether MTV would have played a video with three pairs of gay trenchcoat and black y-front wearing Dicks prancing around on stage remains to be seen. Once shelved, the next single couldn’t really have been more different to ‘Now I’m Following You‘ as Madonna went from wanting to ‘do a little two step’, to wanting ‘to make love in a train….cross country’! And in a strange way, ‘Justify My Love‘ almost has more in common with the preceding single ‘Hanky Panky’ than ‘Now I’m Following You’ when you think about their lyrics! Here is one of the mixes:

Weirdly, randomly, I’m Going Bananas was a single back home in the #1 pop station in Peru. Well, it was likely because of its Tropical style. It understandably flopped and was on their top 15 ranking for only a couple of weeks.
