I remember seeing that back in the day, though I think it was fiction.

I remember seeing that back in the day, though I think it was fiction. I still wonder what the truth is about all of it. Mariah was asked by Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live a few years back if she had ever met or talked with Madonna and her answer was "Never had a conversation with her." It is an absolute stretch, but if it did happen, it could have been entirely done through management and producers without them directly communicating or interacting, though it seems so unlikely given how hands on both of them are within the creation and composition of their music.

A couple of weeks ago we were talking the release of "Love Makes the World Go 'Round" that was then canceled. Initially planned as the first single, it was canceled in favor of "Papa Don't Preach." Here she is performing it at Live AID a full year before the album True Blue came out. "Dress You Up" was about to released as a single after Live AID, so I am a bit surprised she didn't do that song.
I always found it interesting how long the gap is between when an artist records a song and when it is released. It can be a year or two before a song is ever released as a single, depending on the longevity of the album cycle.
For example, True Blue was recorded starting in Dec 1985. Open Your Heart was the first song recorded, but didn't see the light of day as a single until the end of 1986. An artist has to be pretty forward thinking in terms of style and consumer taste, because who knows if the style of music you recorded is going to be popular 1-2 years later. Guess that is why some albums go two singles deep and others go seven singles deep. Depends on reception of the public.
I recalled the Rhythm Nation album charted its last single in the third year of its release. Love Will Never Do replaced Justify My Love at #1 in January 1991. She released a radio-only single called "State of the World." If there had been a physical release, it most likely would have been her 8th top 10 from that album, as it peaked at #5 in airplay. Its parent album came out in the summer of 1989 and charted #1 songs in three calendar years. Which means, she was probably recording in 1988.
Anyway, I digress, here is Love Makes the World Go 'Round at Live AID, with backup vocals by The Thompson Twins.

^Check the posted video. ;)
"Love Makes the World Go Round" is fun, peppy, has a great message, etc.- but it wasn't as strong as the five singles, so good choice to keep it off the release schedule.
areyouready- do those Spotify stats include all versions/listings of a track?

Tracks are combined from each album, but not with remixes.

^Thanks- so, the Immaculate version of LAP, for instance, is lumped with the plays the song gets from the LAP and Celebration albums? Same for other tracks on TIC? I mean, they're "remixes" (most notably, LAP and EY), but the others are not mixes like ones released on maxi-singles and the like.

^Yes. Remixes from 12-inch/maxi-cd singles are not counted.

THanks, I fixed it. I think youtube had automatically started the next video right before I copied the URL.

This isn't Madonna related, except age wise...but Tina Turner is releasing a remix of What's Love Got To Do With It with Kygo on Friday. Will be interesting to see if it does anything.
Wouldn't mind Madonna doing something like this.

chartf- I would be surprised if that Kygo/TT release saw the amount of success that "Higher Love" enjoyed, as TT is still with us, and it's a song that already was a big hit for her.
Doubt a Kygo/Madonna mix would do much either. Maybe in Europe and other territories. Heck, "Higher Love" didn't do nearly as well in the USA as it did elsewhere.

On July 14 1987, Madonna’s second studio album, Like a Virgin was certified 7x platinum (7 million units) in the USA.
According to author J. Randy Taraborrelli, “Every important artist has at least one album in his or her career whose critical and commercial success becomes the artist’s magic moment; for Madonna, Like a Virgin was just such a defining moment”.

Yes, chartf- but, that doesn't always give a complete picture. :) Also notably, it cracked top 30 at pop radio, top 10 AC and top 15 at Hot AC. SHOOTER- I don't dislike BIM; I just don't necessarily like it all that much.

She needs exposure to younger generation.

I don't know why that Madonna/Mariah duet rumor has resurfaced, but this person works for Mariah:
So, that's that on that.

When Like A Virgin was certified 5xP in July 1985, it was the highest certified album by a female artist at the time.
Carol King's Tapestry had sold more, but was not certified 1xP-10xP until 1995.

So what’s the true tea??
We’ve read that the label didn’t want her to compete with her own singles and ubiquitousness. Maybe it was both then?

Now that disco/pop music is in vogue, would you guys like Madonna to release Confessions volume 2?

I would love her to do a throwback album to the uptempo synthy disco sound of her debut. It wouldn't sound unoriginal/pandering at all coming from her.

I would love it, if she can sing like she did then, cause these new vocals don’t dont do it for me.
