Random thread, but what artists have been there for you during your dark periods? I know for me when I'm dealing with a major life event music becomes much more important to me and really can help emotionally more than anything. Florence + the machine saved my life when I was in highschool, Leon Bridges was the soundtrack to my time when one of my friends died, The Cranberries have been helping get through my recent breakup. John Mayer/Alanis Morrisette/Liz Phair/Lorde are also really big emotional soundtracks for me.
Would love to hear what other music has made a big impact in people's lives!

The one song I always think back to when getting through tough times was Firework. It came out during my senior year of high school when I was struggling with my sexuality and accepting myself. Both the song and video helped me during that time and is pretty much what turned me into a Katy stan.
Thereβs also a number of P!nk and Kelly Clarkson songs that helped me through some tough times.

Idk why, but for me it's the fun songs that just are so upbeat you feel great when you listen to them (mostly older rap songs). For example:

Both the song and video helped me during that time and is pretty much what turned me into a Katy stan. I have to second that about Firework. It was very inspiring to me. I was having a hard time dealing with hair loss, and I'm telling you...looking back, Firework singlehandedly gave me the courage to finally take a clippers and shave it the fuck off. It was scary, but quite a turning point, and i've never looked back after that. It's kinda cheesy to think about, but it's true. Hair is overrated anyways. I don't miss it at all.

There are lots of singles that did/do this for me, but album-wise Mariah's Butterfly and Aaliyah's Aaliyah still uplift me whenever I need it

Drop the World back in my freshman year.
TPAB the year that it came out.
Both these music I felt a pretty strong emotional connection to.
I went through some really shitty times in summer 2016, and then again in summer 2017. But neither of those really had any music that I connected to during those times.

This helped me through a break up in college:
This helped me through a situation where I wanted a relationship with someone who didn't want one with me:
This helped me through my dad dying:
This helped me through a time when someone close "needed space" but I couldn't quite let go:

That is a good question. When I was going through a painful heartache and emotional abuse from a guy, plus all the other shit I was going through, I had listened to a lot of Mariah Carey albums, Celine Dion, Mary J. Blige, Foxy Brown, Lil' Kim, Trina, Eve, and other rebellious inspired albums or songs.
These were my favorite songs to listen to during those very difficult times:
1) Owner Of A Lonely Heart - Yes 2) All Cried Out - Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam 3) Hurts So Bad - Linda Rondstadt 4) Only The Lonely - The Motels 5) Harden My Heart - Quarterflash 6) Headed For A Heartbreak - Winger 7) Cold Hearted Snake - Paula Abdul 8) Girlfriend - Pebbles 9) Words - Madonna 10) Send Me An Angel - Real Life 11) Loves Bites - Def Leppard 12) Eyes Without A Face - Billy Idol 13) Little Lies - Fleetwood Mac 14) Make It Real - The Jets 15) Total Eclipse Of The Heart - Bonnie Tyler 16) Missing You - John Waite 17) Hard Habit To Break - Chicago 18) Take A Bow - Madonna 19) Foolish Heart - Steve Perry 20) Should've Known Better - Richard Marx 21) Run To You - Whitney Houston 22) This Used To Be My Playground - Madonna 23) Human Nature - Madonna 24) I Want You - Madonna 25) Something To Remember - Madonna

There are too many songs but I can narrow down albums a bit easier: (top 5 and this was hard)
Britney Jean - Britney (recovery from Anorexia) Britney - Britney (first "secular" artist /album I snuck into the house while being bound to religion) Make Some Noise - Krystal (trying to figure out my future) Dignity - Hilary (Getting rid of Toxic peeps) Breakaway - Kelly (betrayal)

So many. Today's choice:
We live in a generation of Not being in love and not being together But we sure make it feel like we're together 'Cause we're scared to see each other with somebody else

Some songs that really struck a cord with me in the right place at the right time. Keep in my mind, a lot of this is from high school...
"The One," Vanessa Carlton (most of this album really... really polished lyrics) "All You Wanted," Michelle Branch "All Good Things Come to and End," Nelly Furtado "A Little Bit of Everything," Dawes "Hallelujah," Paramore "How to Save a Life," The Fray "Long Way to Happy," P!nk "Praying," Ke$ha

I remember I used to walk home from school to Move Along.
Also, a crap ton of albums got me through the rest of 2017, because holy crap, it was an emotional year for me.

Fleetwood Mac - Self-titled, Rumours and Tusk ANYTHING with Nina Persson's vocals. Nobody sings and writes about heartbreak quite like her IMO. Long Gone Before Daylight was the soundtrack of my first relationship and break-up (I swear to God she wrote "Feathers & Down" about that bum). Gran Turismo and Super Extra Gravity were there too. Mary J. Blige - especially Mary and My Life. I remember listening to The Globe Sessions and s/t by Sheryl Crow a lot during one of my sh*tty break-ups too.

Keyshia Cole's Just Like You got me through the worst break up you can imagine.
Adele's "Turning Tables" also got me through a difficult time with an old friend.

I have never had any albums describe stages of my life like these three. Iβve basically been living βMelodramaβ for two years now.

I've had a great life so I don't really think of myself as having gone through tough times....however my freshman year of high school was a somewhat of a rough patch. We're talking about late 02-early 03. We had moved back to my hometown and my old friends seemed to have moved on. Didn't fit in the way I had before. I was also dealing with some health issues that weren't the most fun. But I have to say that that might have been the best little period in music I've been around for. The albums listed below really kept my spirits up.
John Mayer, Room For Squares - still the best album I've ever heard 3 Doors Down, Away From The Sun Matchbox 20, More Than You Think You Are Avril Lavigne, Let Go Jason Mraz, Waiting For My Rocket To Come Maroon 5, Songs About Jane
There were a ton of other great songs out at the time in addition to these. But I would listen to these albums, especially John's, every night. I actually look back on that time fondly because of the music but I know I wasn't too happy at the time.

I would also add during my trying times in my last year in college, I would listen to Christina Aguilera's Lotus album. I can definitely relate to "Shut Up" and "Circles". Freshman year in high school, I would turned to the Stripped album.

Hunter Hayes is mostly my go to when I'm really struggling. FGL's songs are a pretty major mood booster. If I just want to be in my feels for a bit I'll turn on some Gary Allan.
