I figure someone started an official 92.7 discussion thread back when, so why not start one for KTU since there are a few things I want to bring up, and I'm sure other people might as well, so why not keep something running.
First off, I read on a myspace group that as of JUNE 1st, WHOOPI GOLDBERG replaced Baltazar and Goumba Johnny in the morning?!? And they're not mentioned on ktu's site anymore!
WHAT IS UP WITH THAT?!?
I mean I hate them, but is this a sign of things to come, perhaps something drastic?
Also, has anyone noticed how though KTU isn't totally up to date with things, that in the past month things have gotten better?
Sometimes I check mmr247, and they have songs played as often as 38 times!!! Thats better then mid-winter's 27. Plus though they are playing some hip hop and stuff like that, they are playing newer music...
Cascada - Miracle Danielle Bollinger - Kiss The Sky Christina Milian - Say I Nick Lachey - What's Left Of Me Nelly Furtado - Promiscuous Jeannie Ortega - Crowded Mario Vasquez - Gallery Bob Sinclair - Love Generation.
...food for thought.

Yeah, I read the Whoopi thing on All Access as well. Recently, I've been having a heated discussion (with my dad, LOL) about KTU's format and how they play "new music" that's been out for more than 7 months ("Love Generation" and "You Shine On Me")...disappointed. Where are Goumba and Balthazar?

I was listening today, and I heard "KTU, new music." Yupp, that new song by Stunt, I think it's called Raindrops? BEEN OUT FOR 6 MONTHS NOW! So yea, not new.
I love having one thread to bitch in.

KTU is going downhill and it's getting worse.
Gone are the days when this station was cutting edge. The mixshows on the weekends are fine, but aside from that, it's all gone.
And I thought KNGY took too long to add some songs (they still do take a bit longer than some stations, but they have some exclusives that no other stations have added yet, or if they did, they dumped them)!
And what's the point of the no-repeat workday thing? It's kinda misleading to say it's no-repeat when they play the same songs each and every workday. How many other dance stations in the U.S. play "Baby Talk" and "Spring Love" every single day!

How many other dance stations in the U.S. play "Baby Talk" and "Spring Love" every single day! TOTALLY. I know some of it is classic. But honestly, how much Stevie B., how much Cover Girls, and how much Barry White can the greater NYC area stand?!?! I called in about a week ago when I heard Amber's "One More Night" followed by Delerium's "Silence" (which they did NOT PLAY in 2001 when it was a massive hit), and told the girl answering that the last 8 minutes were the reason I haven't given up on KTU yet. As I've said numerous times, if they're going to play the classics, play a few an hour, and allow the majority of the no-repeat workday include their hits from the last 10 years. Hell, they overplayed "In De Ghetto" so much from 1996-1998 that I never wanted to hear it again, but I totally would like to hear it since I haven't since then! Then again, let's have them not include "Where Do You Go" or "Total Eclipse of the Heart", lol.

"In De Ghetto" has been played a lot here since 1994. At least they played the breaks mix of it here.

Anyone heard Anna Vissi's "Welcome To The Party" on KTU? I read that they started giving the song some spins and wanted to make sure it's not just a rumor. Thanks!

This song has received 80 spins to date on radio. Total. So that could possibly include KTU. But since it is the next single, radio may have temporarily dropped it until it gets a proper release and promotion.

It's funny since KTU has gone downhill and my mother has gotten more in to dancey stuff, as opposed to the adult station on LI with some disco and stuff, she listens to 102.7 WNEW out of the city, and I really find myself listening SOO much more to 102.7 then 103.5 - it's like one or two new school songs an hour (like KTU) but instead of 1960s music without a beat and freestyle which KTU considers dance, everything on 102.7 has a beat, rhythm etc... It's a lotta fun to listen to!
Also, I just think that KTU should become a party station, not a dance station. They like dance, hip hop, freestyle, etc...
Why would KTU pass by songs like Black Eyed Peas Pump It, if they like the more hip hop (aka "ethnic" in my opinion) style, why not remixes to Shakira's Don't Bother? If they like being popular, as much as I hate the bitch, Natasha Bedingfield had Unwritten remixed by Johnny Vicious. Fall Out Boy was mad popular, why not the Sunshine mix to Dance Dance?
And honestly - why they still play the regular album versions of ALL Mariah songs, I don't know... even Be Without You by Mary J... they played the Moto Blanco for like three weeks or so, now it's back to the slow r&b album version. I understand playing regular versions of everything Shakira, Chris Brown, Christina Milian, Rihanna, from Pon de Replay and SOS, and now even Unfaithful!!!, Jeannie Ortega, on and on - there were never any good mixes of those... Run It only had a Nevins and the hott "That Kid Chris" mix, and especially with Rihanna, wow, how they never play a remix of her stuff I don't know.
Anyways, listening to NEW is pretty good, and last week I heard either Debbie Loeb or Kristine Hendrick's Valentin mix song on WNEW, NY's Classic dance station nonetheless, thought perhaps KTU caught on, but no. Give NEW a shot.
Anyway, enough for tonight lol.

LOL! I think it's kinda cool when your parents start to like music you like! I used to turn the station to KNGY 92.7 in my Mom's car whenever I would visit, and now she listens to it regularly. She now has me make CD-Rs of some of the stuff I listen to because she likes it! In the beginning, it was weird having her ask me if I had any new Mariah Carey remixes almost everytime we talked because she was loving the other ones! "Say Somethin" as mixed by Morales and "Raindrops" by Stunt are her songs of the moment.

As you know KTU still plays the isshhhh out of Mynt HDYK and Lucas Prata And SS, literally she knows both song's chorus, and it's hysterical. My dad doesn't even know KTU exists, but my mom knows every word to Cascada. Gay guys gotta show props to their moms lol.

79 of the 80 Spins for Anna Vissi are from Sirius and they are no longer playing the record. In fact in the last 7 days, nobody has played it.

First thing;
Paul Cubby Bryant is leaving Z100 NY tomorrow... 2-6pm tomorrow is his last drive home on Z100 after over a decade. Z100 won't be the same. But neither will KTU. He is joining Whoopi Goldberg in late July on that talk show thing Clear Channel is doing. Hopefully KTU gets better when he joins. He is a very influential person and I know through having spoken with him a few times he is a dance music fan. We can hope!
Next, Has anyone heard the horrible mix ktu plays of Unfaithful by Rihanna? This horrible sped up/cracked out version? Meanwhile yea, Z100 (as I speak at 8:59) is doing the top 9 at 9, and is playing (every time I hear it now on Z100 in fact) the Moran/Rigg Dance remix! Gotta love Z100!
PS you can now also hear Field Mobb w/Ciara - So What, and Janet and Nelly's new snooze Call On Me, on KTU in all their album version glory!

On July 31st at 6am, I strongly feel that KTU will be no more. If the producers have a satirical sense of humor, the last song will be "I Will Survive."
I'm interpreting Cubby's statement of the music being "compatible" with KTU's audience is basically another way of saying "most listeners are 18-34 year old females, and that group also likes Rob Thomas and Kelly Clarkson." So possibly the station will be like a PLJ of a few years back?
Maybe I'm wrong, but NYC radio is about to have a massive overhaul.

So possibly the station will be like a PLJ of a few years back? Is that a good or bad thing? I always was, still am, and pray that unless there is a huge change, I will always be a big fan of Z100. I never explored PLJ until maybe like three years ago, so the PLJ thing is a bad thing I'm assuming?

At least in regards to that NYC radio overhaul comment, I can definetly see that happening as well...
I remember the doomsday scenario that occured when WXRK (k-roq) ended it's run and became Jack or something, the devistation people I know felt when it became a talk station during the day or weekdays or somethin, I never cared enough to know.
First off, not like I care in the slightest again, NYC doesn't have a country music station. That is weird. There have been huge fights between HOT 97 and Power105 djs as usual, but to a ridiculous level, esp. a few months back. KTU is melting down, and WNEW is stealing people away from KTU and Lite. Like I said Kroq is changing all the time now, I think they play music again during the week again now? KTU is having Whoopi and Cubby host a show in the mornings, and supposedly a few of KTU's other dj's left as well I remember reading somewhere. Some don't do radio, others like old school Joe Causi (now on WNEW) are on other stations.
No matter what I know what music I will and won't like, this will be a fun thing to see what happens with this whole mess throughout summer.

WXRK 92.3 K-ROK became Free-FM talk radio on January 1st, 2006; David Lee Roth was hired and fired. In May of 2006, music was once again played on the frequency after 7pm weekdays and on the weekends. The music selection-- the "best" of rock (Q104.3 Classic Rock + today's big rock hits) mirrors the K-ROK of 2005.
WCBS-FM 101.1 "Golden Oldies" became JACK-FM on June 3, 2005.
WNEW 102.7, the former NYC all-talk station (which broadcasted Opie & Anthony before the St. Patrick's Cathedral debacle) began stunting a "best of CHR" format (meaning their playlist consisted of a lot of CHR hits of the most recent 5 years) in January 2003. By April 2003 (April 15th?), they were 102.7 Blink: a CHR station with DJs, and continued this format through the summer. Interestingly, they added a lot of stuff before Z100, including heavy rotation of The Ataris' "The Boys of Summer," prompting Z100 to add the track and see to its success. The most comical thing was their "you be the DJ" contest, wherein they tried to get a night DJ (at a $100,000/year salary) out of the listener pool, incorporating interactive American-Idol style voting after the 5 finalists were on the air. I remember one of them trying to introduce "Miss Independent" (played to death on Blink) and sounding so nervous and awful, haha.
At the end of the summer and early fall, 102.7 shifted from CHR to a more Mix 105.1 (WMXV//WNSR type-stuff, older stations on NYC Radio), catering to a female-oriented pop station. In November, they played all Christmas music all the time. On December 26, 2003, they resumed a Mix format, and by January 2005, began to stunt older dance tracks. Finally, they became NY's Classic Dance Mix over the next few months. The station is finally settled on a format that has kind of been working for them.
Here's what I see. Cubby and Whoopi are going to KTU. KTU will phase out the dance over the next few months and kind of become more Hot AC, yet play the occasional mainstream-enough dance track (eg., Shannon's "Let The Music Play" is a freestyle classic, but went Top 10 in 1984, so it'll get airplay; same with stuff like "Buffalo Stance" despite the rap, etc.) PLJ used to do this a few years back but after the departing of personalities like Kim Ashley and Jamie Lee, has since expanded its playlist to include a lot of 1970s hits, whereas their moniker used to be "the best of the 80s, 90s, and today." Their awesome Saturday Night 80s with Jamie Lee (which I listened to and taped all the time in high school, haha) is now the syndicated "Saturday Night At The 80s" with Todd Pettingale.
Should that happen, Classic Dance Mix 102.7 will probably see a lot of the KTU switch and will be a pseudo-KTU, increasing its modern dance playlist to maybe 5 or so tracks an hour. Or, if not, 102.7 will die and adopt an Alternative format, which NYC needs greatly.
Honestly, who the hell really knows. It's really going to be interesting to see. In summary, my thoughts:
1. Perhaps more than ever, New York Radio NEEDS an Alternative/AAA/New-Rock oriented station, and a fresh one at that. 2. KTU will see great success with the nationally-syndicated Cubby/Whoopi morning drive, BUT at the expense of a LOT of loyal KTU fans, who for the time being will seek out 102.7 for music. 3. NYC needs a good dance station, plain and simple. It's a big city, and dance music is appreciated; Country is not. KTU's sign-on in 1996 was revolutionary, and breathed life into NYC and caused then-alternative Z100 to be re-worked, just like Hot 103.5's sign-on in August of 1986 (after CHR 92-KTU died in July 1985) caused dance music to be added at Z100, thus proliferating it nationally.
4. I could be totally and completely wrong, and after the Whoopi morning drive, KTU goes back to dance music; if Cubby has a handle in this, it actually might get a little more fresh and a little better in terms of track and music. The fact remains, though, that Baltazaar, Goumba Johnny, Broadway Bill Lee, and Jewlez Lopez (Jewlez en tu radio) are gone, and with the exception of Vic Latino's house party, Diane Prior, and Judy Torres, who knows who's coming to KTU.
I could be wrong with some of my info but I'm recalling all of this to the best of my memory.

Ummm... Beatstock was amazing. I didn't get to see Joey Negro, Jeannie Ortega, Luz Divina, Danielle Bollinger, Bob Sinclar/Gary Pine, Reina, Freemasons, Stunt, Amuka, and prob a few others, we got to our seats at 705, the concert started at 6... but what I saw of it, just however many thousand people, at least 15,000, knowing every word to dance songs I knew... was just amazing. Lucas Prata was good, Kim Sozzi wasn't anything special, Amber was AMAZING, Rockell was great, and shockingly Angelo Venuto was outrageous! I'm sure I'm forgetting somethings, Jonathan Peters had EVERYONE out of their seats for like a 15/20 minute set of techno... seriously, if you love dance music and either 1) live in the area and haven't ever come to a beatstock, or 2) don't live in the area and haven't been able to go to one, you have no choice but to go next year... I'm saving up for it like I would a vacation next year, buying the best seats, tailgating even earlier, and not getting to the seats over an hour late! You can't express what it's like to see sooooo many people know the words to a dance song in one place. Heres their page www.ktu.com/pages/beatstock.html

^^ Didn't you go last year to? How was it? I've been trying to win tickets since 2002 and have yet to go....somewhere on my cassette tapes of KTU I think I actually have the 2002 Beatstock promo recorded haha.
Quite honestly, KTU has done fairly well this summer in terms of music, mixshows, and tracks. I think this time last year it was wayyy worse.

I don't understand why they don't add new songs and they are always so late; and have the same songs in the top 10 all year round - when they are a no-repeat-workday They only spin songs once a day, other than on weekends...They need to add all the new songs possible. The fact that they haven't added Debbie or Kristine is stupid.

Hmmmm. why did they add the Peter Luts/Dominico song??? Hmmmm... oh right, she was able to perform at Beatstock... right... Why was I soooo happy when the added Kiss The Sky? Right... cause I bet that she would be at Beatstock... Stunt back when... Why wasn't Paul Oakenfold added? He wasn't at Beatstock. I was happy when Elektro is Hot was added by Outwork/Mr. Gee... then Beatstock came around, and one of the only new techno songs, bam, dropped. They added Bob Sinclar's Love Generation and Rock This Party, right he was at Beatstock... They have artists like Beyonce and Sean Paul because they bring in audiences... it's just a coincidence that One Night Only is a dance song... if it sounded like Cassie, they would have added it too.
Give it a month, Danielle's song, Stunt's song, gone... They add songs that are one of these things, a) a dance song that will be at an event of theirs, or b) a hip hop song/ethnic song that has rhythm...
The one real thing that bothers me though is that they play the same songs every day in a different order from 9-5 during the no repeat workday... I hear Marc Anthony's I've Got You like everyday. It's soo annoying. Jennifer Lopez, Love Don't Cost AA Thing... Outkast HEY YA FOR CRYING OUTLOUD... The list I could come up with of songs they could play once in a while during their no repeat day at some point that are classics, but are just forgotten about, is ridiculous.
On that note though, who cares, I'm done caring... Beatstock was amazing, there is good music at all times in my car, and thats all that matters.
