hitsdailydouble.com/news&id=310467Saturday, February 10, 2018 NEW RELEASES: HEROES AND HEARTSAlthough its curators would prefer you didn't call it a soundtrack, the Black Panther album—crafted by Kendrick Lamar, Top Dawg and team to accompany the wildly anticipated Marvel blockbuster, which hits theaters in one week—has arrived, in tandem with an official ST (for the latest steamy installment in the Fifty Shades franchise). Black Panther (TDE/Aftermath/Interscope) 110-120k total activity, 35-40k album 50 Shades Freed (Republic) 50-60k, 30-40k As you probably know by now, Lamar performs on five of the Panther album's 14 tracks; other participants in the superhero sonics include The Weeknd, SZA, ScHoolboy Q, 2 Chainz, Khalid, Swae Lee, Jay Rock and Vince Staples. Panther is the #1 album at Apple Music and iTunes; seven tracks are currently in the Apple Music Top 10 and five in the Spotify Top 10 (with three in the Top 5).

Terrible opening for FSF, but not surprising with the dropoff from the first to the second and the single being basically DOA.
The TEA/SEA boost for BP is about what I'd thought it'd be, but the sales are lower. Won't be surprised if it grows though.

I would love to see Justin Timberlake's second week numbers. He couldn't clear 250,000 in pure sales and 300,000 SPS. That album will have a tough time going platinum unless a killer single is released from the album.

^It's currently #4 in iTunes. So things don't look too promising in terms of second week sales numbers. Given that it just got over 50k in track sales plus streaming equivalent, that number will probably drop significantly this week.
Not bad numbers for Black Panther OST, just slight over The Greatest Showman OST's numbers, except that most for it is streaming rather than pure album sales. It might stick around the top 10 of the BB 200 if it manages to yield a couple of Hot 100 hits.

Really hope the video dropping and the album release pushes Kendrick and SZA's "All The Stars" into the top 40 (which seems likely). That song is phenomenal, I would love to see it become a huge hit.

The Greatest Showman OST is back to #1 in iTunes. It could be a challenger for #1 in Top Album Sales next week.

I think Black Panther could really blow up once the movie is out. I'm more interested in it's number next week than this week.

^Good point. Fifty Shades Freed OST even with the movie's release this week isn't doing that well. The second week numbers for Black Panther OST should be more telling about its longer term prospects. If it can hold or improve over the first week number, that'd be a good sign for it.

In regards to Black Panther soundtrack, does anyone think any of the singles on the album could make the soundtrack blowup like Whitney’s Bodyguard album?

No numbers for MGMT It's only #15 on iTunes and not represented at all on Apple Music and Spotify so I get why. Just, ehhhhh. This should be a big moment for them, at least top 10.

In regards to Black Panther soundtrack, does anyone think any of the singles on the album could make the soundtrack blowup like Whitney’s Bodyguard album? The two current singles along are growing with X and Paramedic! having potential. Pray For Me could be huge if they release a video for it since Pop, Urban, and Rhythmic have already attached to it. It also just debuted at #7 on the Hot 100 so that's a good sign. The Ways may be able to do something, too.

YOUR TOP 20: BLACK PANTHER SALUTEAhead of the film’s release, the Kendrick Lamar/Top Dawg-curated Black Panther soundtrack will debut at #1. Migos (Quality Control/Motown/Capitol) 71-76k, 2-3k 3. Justin Timberlake (RCA) 70-75k, 40-44k 4. The Greatest Showman (Atlantic) 61-66k, 36-40k 5. *Fifty Shades Freed (Republic) 58-63k, 39-43k 6. ^Quite an upgrade for Black Panther OST. It seems to be doing well in streaming and some tracks from it are selling decently. Disappointing debut for the Fifty Shades Freed OST, which probably reflects that the actual movie didn't do that great in the box office.

Not terrible numbers for BP soundtrack on its own, but it's a disaster when compared to DAMN's opening week. I guess Kendrick's usual fans are sitting this one out. Still, the 50 Shades did a lot worse, so it's not a complete loss.

Still, the 50 Shades did a lot worse, so it's not a complete loss. It's not really a Kendrick Lamar album and it hasn't been promoted as one either. The Kendrick tracks are doing the best out of all the songs. I'd expect it to maybe go up next week with the movie opening? I think we might have a new million seller, but let's wait until next week, because it could be another GOTG Vol. 2 and run out of steam quickly.

It has two top 40 singles to its name at the moment, All the Stars (#31) and Pray for Me (#7), with the possibility in the coming weeks that King's Dead may join them.
Also, I find it kinda funny that Man of the Woods is struggling to not get beaten out by perennial The Greatest Showman on both SPS and raw sales in its sophomore week (and that Black Panther is actually giving both a run for their money in raw sales).

^I expect quite a few songs from it to enter the Hot 100 and Bubbling Under thanks to the streaming they got. The songs from the album probably got streamed just under 150 million times.
