Justin Timberlake Earns Fourth No. 1 Album on Billboard 200 Chart With 'Man of the Woods'
Justin Timberlake notches his fourth No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart, as Man of the Woods debuts atop the tally. The set, which was released on Feb. 2 through RCA Records, earned 293,000 equivalent album units in the week ending Feb. 8, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 242,000 were in traditional album sales.
Timberlake scores the largest week for an album -- both in terms of units and pure album sales -- since Taylor Swift’s Reputation flew in at No. 1 on the Dec. 2, 2017-dated chart with 1.24 million units and 1.22 million in album sales. Timberlake claims the biggest week for an album by a man since Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN. debuted at No. 1 on the May 6, 2017 list with 603,000 units and 353,000 in traditional album sales. The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new Feb. 17-dated chart (where Man of the Woods starts at No. 1) will be posted in full on Billboard's websites on Tuesday (Feb. 13). Of Man of the Woods’ launch of 293,000 units, 242,000 were in traditional album sales, 14,000 were in TEA units, and 37,000 were in SEA units. Of its pure album sales, 139,000 were in digital albums, 89,000 were in CD sales and 15,000 were in vinyl LP sales.Notably, Man of the Woods also claims the biggest-selling week for a vinyl album since LCD Soundsystem’s American Dream sold 16,000 in its first week, on the chart dated Sept. 23, 2017. (Target carried an exclusive orange-colored edition of Man of the Woods on vinyl, while all other retailers had the standard black vinyl version.)Overall, Timberlake has the second-biggest sales week for a vinyl LP among solo male artists since Nielsen Music began tracking data in 1991. Only the debut frame of Jack White's Lazaretto was larger: 40,000 in 2014. (Among all soloists in the Nielsen era, only one other artist has sold as many vinyl LPs in a week as Timberlake and White: Adele, who did it in five separate weeks with her 25 album in late 2015.Timberlake’s last album, The 20/20 Experience (2 of 2), debuted at No. 1 on the Oct. 19, 2013-dated chart with 350,000 in traditional album sales. (The chart did not transition to a units-based ranking until the end of 2014.) Timberlake has also topped the list with his first installment of The 20/20 Experience (earlier in 2013; 968,000 copies sold in its first week) and FutureSex/LoveSounds (2006; 684,000). His only album to miss the top was his first solo set, Justified, which debuted and peaked at No. 2 in 2002 (bowing with 439,000 sold).Timberlake, of course, is a member of the group *NSYNC, which tallied two Billboard 200 No. 1s: No Strings Attached, in 2000, and Celebrity, in 2001. Man of the Woods’ lead single, “Filthy,” debuted and peaked at No. 9 on the Jan. 20-dated Billboard Hot 100 chart. He followed it with a teaser track, “Supplies,” which hit No. 71 (Feb. 3). The album’s second single, “Say Something,” featuring Chris Stapleton, debuted at No. 9 on the most recently compiled Hot 100 (dated Feb. 3). At No. 2 on the Billboard 200, Migos’ Culture II falls a spot in its second week, earning 88,000 units (down 56 percent). The soundtrack to The Greatest Showman slips 2-3 with 81,000 units (down 15 percent), Ed Sheeran’s ÷ (Divide) rises 5-4 with 40,000 units (down 17 percent) and Bruno Mars’ 24K Magic descends 4-5 with 35,000 units (28 percent).Post Malone’s Stoney rises 8-6 with 33,000 units (down 3 percent), Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN. descends 6-7 with 32,000 units (down 17 percent), Camila Cabello’s Camila falls 7-8 with 31,000 units (down 15 percent) and Lil Uzi Vert’s Luv Is Rage 2 climbs 12-9 with 25,000 units (down 1 percent).Rounding out the top 10 is the chart’s second-highest debut, the Now 65 compilation, which bows at No. 10. The set -- featuring recent Hot 100 hits like Demi Lovato’s “Sorry Not Sorry” and Camila Cabello’s “Havana” -- launches with 25,000 units -- all from traditional album sales. Now 65 is the 69th Now That’s What I Call Music compilation to reach the top 10 (63 of the main, numbered series; and six genre-specific spin-off titles, like Now That’s What I Call Christmas!). The U.S. Now series will celebrate its 20th anniversary later this year, as the first Now album debuted on the chart dated Nov. 14, 1998. (The original Now series launched in the U.K. in 1983.)

I have noticed something. Urban acts always have so much more Streaming than sales compared to other genres. Why is that?

293k is decent after all, could've been worse.
If it drops the regular 80% next week, it'll be like 60k or sth.

What are we calling "young" here? Young like Selena Gomez's fans? Or young like 21 Pilots' fans? Does Drake have an older fan base than other urban acts?

www.yahoo.com/entertainment/justin-timberlakes-man-woods-first-week-sales-arent-super-214804825.htmlJustin Timberlake's 'Man of the Woods' first-week sales aren't so 'super'Yahoo Music Paul Grein, Writer February 12, 2018 Justin Timberlake’s Man of the Woods had a less-than-super opening week, despite his high-profile performance at this year’s Super Bowl. It moved 293K “equivalent units” in the U.S., which includes 242K in traditional album sales. (The “equivalent units” figure also takes into account digital track sales and streaming activity.) This is way down from Timberlake’s 2013 album, The 20/20 Experience, which sold 968K in traditional album sales in its first week. A Part 2 to that album, released six months later, sold 350K in traditional album sales. (Billboard introduced the “equivalent unit” concept in late 2014.) Timberlake’s first two solo albums also got off to faster starts. Justified sold 439K copies in its first week in 2002. FutureSex/LoveSounds sold 684K in its first week in 2006. That gives Man of the Woods the slimmest first-week sales tally for any of Timberlake’s solo albums. Timberlake’s sales decline is surprising because he had the biggest platform in the world to promote the album — the halftime show at Super Bowl LII. A total of 103.4 million people watched the Super Bowl this year. Moreover, Timberlake timed his album release to take maximum advantage of that appearance. Man of the Woods came out two days before the big show, and he opened his performance with the album’s lead single, “Filthy.” By contrast, last year’s headliner, Lady Gaga, performed more than three months after the release of her album Joanne. However, Gaga’s halftime show was widely praised, while Timberlake’s received mixed-to-scathing reviews. Album sales have been dropping for years, but some artists have been able to defy the downward trend. In the past year, five albums posted larger first-week “equivalent units” totals than Timberlake did this week — Taylor Swift’s Reputation (1,238,000), Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN. (603K), Drake’s More Life (505K), Ed Sheeran’s ÷ (451K), and P!nk’s Beautiful Trauma (408K). In fairness, none of those acts has been a superstar attraction as long as Timberlake has. With NSync, he first cracked the top five on the Billboard 200 in September 1998, giving him a nearly 20-year span of top five albums. Just two years ago, Timberlake walked off with the year’s best-selling single, “Can’t Stop the Feeling!” (Digital sales to date: 3,295,000.) If Timberlake had a monster pop hit like “Can’t Stop the Feeling!” now, it would have doubtless boosted sales of the new album. The first single from the album, the above-mentioned “Filthy,” entered the Hot 100 at No. 9 but faded fast. The second, “Supplies,” never got off the ground (No. 71). The third, “Say Something” (featuring Chris Stapleton), debuted at No. 9 last week and, though it falls out of the top 10 this week, shows signs of being a more meaningful long-term hit. Top AlbumsMigos’s Culture II dips from No. 1 to No. 2 in its second week. The Greatest Showman soundtrack dips from No. 2 to No. 3 in its ninth week. It spent two weeks at No. 1. The album logs its seventh week at No. 1 on Top Soundtracks. It spends its fifth week at No. 1 on the Official U.K. Albums Chart. Ed Sheeran’s ÷ inches up from No. 5 to No. 4 in its 49th week. The album spent its first two weeks at No. 1. Bruno Mars’s 24K Magic dips from No. 4 to No. 5 in its 64th week. The album debuted and peaked at No. 2. Post Malone’s Stoney rebounds from No. 8 to No. 6 in its 61st week. The album peaked at No. 4. Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN. dips from No. 6 to No. 7 in its 43rd week. The album spent four weeks at No. 1. Camila Cabello’s Camila dips from No. 7 to No. 8 in its fourth week. The album debuted at No. 1. Lil Uzi Vert’s Luv Is Rage 2 rebounds from No. 12 to No. 9 in its 24th week. The album debuted at No. 1. Now 65 debuts at No. 10. It’s the 69th Now volume to crack the top 10. That tally includes 63 of the 65 regular, numbered volumes plus six themed albums. Above & Beyond’s Common Ground plummets from No. 3 completely off the Billboard 200. Two other albums drop out of the top 10 this week. Khalid’s American Teen drops from No. 9 to No. 11, and Imagine Dragons’ Evolve drops from No. 10 to No. 13. Chris Stapleton’s From A Room: Volume 2 drops from No. 18 to No. 23 in its 10th week. The album debuted and peaked at No. 2. The album logs its third week at No. 1 on Top Country Albums. Stapleton has three of the top five albums on the country chart this week. He made a clean sweep of the top three positions last week. Just two other artists have held down the top three spots on the country album chart in the same week — Garth Brooks for 11 weeks in 1992, and Charlie Rich for eight weeks in 1974. Both of those artists went on to win the CMA Award for Entertainer of the Year in those years. Will Stapleton follow suit? He has been nominated the last two years, but lost to Brooks both times. I think he’ll do it this year. You read it here first. Ed Sheeran’s x inches up from No. 49 to No. 48 in its 190th chart week. The album debuted at No. 1. The album returns to No. 1 on Top Catalog Albums, displacing Drake’s Take Care. This is its ninth week on top. The Notorious B.I.G.’s Greatest Hits, which debuted at No. 1 in March 2007, tops the 1 million mark in traditional album sales this week. Coming Chart Watch attractions: Black Panther The Album, Music From and Inspired By is on track to debut at No. 1 next week. The 50 Shades Freed soundtrack will open around No. 5.

It's worth mentioning that Justin's figure is without a ticket album bundle, which so many other artists have used recently to boost their numbers and chart positions. Given that Justin does have a tour coming up and the first dates released sold out, isn't it possible that if he were to offer a bundle, 100k or so could have been added to his figure, which would have been in the range of an acceptable and strong opening? I just want to put things in perspective.

^^If the Above & Beyond's album dropout is true, it ties the Epic AF Compilation as the biggest ones in Billboard 200 history. The later dropped out due to a technicality that allows compilation albums only to chart with pure album sales. For Above & Beyond's album, that was a 97.48% drop in pure album sales. Ouch!

It fell to #120 on sales alone. I’m a little surprised myself that they have no streaming support. Does EDM suck on streaming or something?

^^If the Above & Beyond's album dropout is true, it ties the Epic AF Compilation as the biggest ones in Billboard 200 history. The later dropped out due to a technicality that allows compilation albums only to chart with pure album sales. For Above & Beyond's album, that was a 97.48% drop in pure album sales. Ouch! It fell to #120 on sales alone. I’m a little surprised myself that they have no streaming support. Does EDM suck on streaming or something? Generally speaking, yes. On last week's Streaming Songs, The Middle managed to chart at #34. No Above & Beyond song made last week's top 200 on Spotify.

MILLION SELLERS CLUB www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/8100012/the-notorious-big-fifth-million-selling-albumThe Notorious B.I.G. Scores Fifth Million-Selling Album2/15/2018 by Keith Caulfield Each of his five of his solo albums have now sold a million copies in the U.S. The Notorious B.I.G. scores his fifth million-selling album in the U.S., as his 2007 release Greatest Hits climbs past the million sales mark. The set sold 4,000 copies in the week ending Feb. 8 (up a whopping 339 percent), according to Nielsen Music, pushing the album’s sales to 1.003 million. The album’s big sales surge is owed to how the title was sale priced for only $4.99 in the iTunes Store during the tracking week. On the Billboard 200 albums chart, the set climbs 158-74 with 8,000 equivalent album units earned (up 61 percent). All five of The Notorious B.I.G.’s solo albums have now each sold at least a million copies. His best-seller is Life After Death (5.36 million), followed by Ready to Die (3.87 million), Born Again (1.96 million) and Duets: The Final Chapter (1.17 million). Life After Death, Born Again and Greatest Hits all reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200. Ready to Die peaked at No. 15, and Duets: The Final Chapter topped out at No. 3. The Notorious B.I.G. has one more album in his catalog, the 2017 collaborative set The King & I with Faith Evans. It has sold 24,000 copies and topped out at No. 65. In total, The Notorious B.I.G. has sold 13.4 million albums in the U.S.

www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/8100021/billboard-200-chart-moves-nfs-perceptionBillboard 200 Chart Moves: NF's 'Perception' Hits Six-Month High as 'Let You Down' Single Continues to Grow2/15/2018 by Keith Caulfield Plus: Meek Mill's "Dreams and Nightmares" album returns and Dua Lipa's self-titled album hits a new peak. On the latest Billboard 200 albums chart (dated Feb. 17), Justin Timberlake’s Man of the Woods bowed at No. 1 with 293,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending Feb. 8, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 242,000 were in traditional album sales. Man of the Woods marks Timberlake’s fourth No. 1 album. The Billboard 200 chart ranks the week’s most popular albums based on their overall consumption. That overall unit figure combines pure album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). Now, let’s take a closer look at some of the action on the rest of the Billboard 200: — Various Artists, Now 65 – No. 10 — The Now 65 compilation bows at No. 10 with 25,000 equivalent album units earned — all from traditional album sales. It’s the 69th Now That’s What I Call Music compilation to reach the top 10. Of the 69 top 10 sets, 63 are of the main, numbered series, while six have been genre-specific spin-off titles like Now That’s What I Call Christmas! The U.S. Now series will celebrate its 20th anniversary later this year, as the first Now album debuted on the chart dated Nov. 14, 1998. The original Now series launched in the U.K. in 1983. — NF, Perception – No. 17 — NF’s former No. 1 Perception climbs 21-17 with 19,000 units (up 6 percent) — its highest rank since it debuted at No. 1 (Oct. 28, 2017). The set rises in large part to a $5.99 sale tag in the iTunes Store. The title sold 5,000 copies (up 44 percent; rising 56-31 on Top Album Sales), with 4,000 of that sum in downloads (up 57 percent). Perception’s hit single “Let You Down” continues to find new fans, as the song rises 8-7 on the Pop Songs airplay tally and 14-12 on the Billboard Hot 100. NF’s previous album, 2016’s Therapy Session, also benefits from the iTunes discounting, as the set climbs back on the Billboard 200 at No. 80. It earned 2,000 units (up 95 percent). Nearly all of that sum came from album sales (up 95 percent), of which most were in downloads (up 134 percent). — Dua Lipa, Dua Lipa – No. 27 — The album’s slow climb continues, as the set reaches the top 30 — and a new peak — for the first time (15,000 units; up 4 percent). The effort’s “New Rules” rises 7-6 on the Billboard Hot 100. — Rhye, Blood – No. 118 — The set debuts with 6,000 units with 4,000 of that sum in pure album sales. The album performed solidly on vinyl LP, as 22 percent of its debut-week sales came from the vinyl format (it debuts at No. 10 on the Vinyl Albums chart). In addition, the album performs particularly well with indie and small chain music stores, as it debuts at No. 3 on the Tastemakers chart (which ranks the top sellers at indie and small chain stores). — Meek Mill, Dreams and Nightmares – No. 128 — The 2012 album — which debuted and peaked at No. 2 — returns to the chart for the first time since 2013 (6,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending Feb. 8, up 211 percent, according to Nielsen Music). The set’s back thanks to interest in its title track, which was adopted as a de facto anthem by the Philadelphia Eagles for the team’s Super Bowl LII championship aspirations. In the Feb. 8 tracking frame, the song nabbed 4.4 million on-demand audio streams (up 215 percent) and 10,000 downloads (up 703 percent).
