The worst part of this tribute is seeing Mary Mary perform, knowing that we will never get another album from them

Artist of the year: Taylor Swift Maybe in 2008/09, 2012/13 and 2014/15...NOT THIS YEAR. Well, she's the only nominee in attendance, so... and Post Malone?

I'm just wondering why Ciara gets beat up for never singing when JLO doesn't. Ciara killed it.

Drake won 0 awards at the VMAs and 0 awards at the AMAs. The only award show I see him winning anything in at this rate is the BBMAs. Grammys will probably give him 0 awards, too. Welp.

Carrie Underwood is low key brilliant. Not American Idol still having the real singers on lock with her, Kelly and Fanny!
Speaking of America Idols. Mariah looks amazing, her dress and set was beyond beyond and she sounded good over her backing track but there was live parts sans chorus
Ciara and Missy wow!
Aretha Franklin tribute gorgeous.
The rest whatever.

I feel really bad for Tracee Ellis Ross getting roped into doing this awful show. They can't even call it an awards show. It's just performance after performance. Call it a showcase. Tracee did a good job though. I liked her opening. I am only going to talk about the performances that mattered. I was entertained by Taylor's performance though I did notice she was not singing live in a few places at the end and the backing track was so obviously loud. I liked Mariah's even though it did appear to be lipped. I loved the choreography around her. Ella Mai was AMAZING! Cardi B rocked it though IDK what Bad Bunny and J Balvin were doing. I liked Dua Lipa's 90s rave/circuit club performance. Camila's was pleasant. I like the simplicity of it. Carrie was easily the best of the the night. Jennifer Lopez's was nice though the Sia backing vocals were too prominent. They are prominent enough to be considered a feature. Panic! At The Disco were good enough, though this was a really tough song for them to do. Ciara and Missy were FIRE! Shawn Mendes was enjoyable. He needed to take some clothes off. I enjoyed the Aretha tribute though I would have liked Yolanda Adams to be a part of it and it should not have been done at the end like they just dumped it there like an afterthought. I am still disturbed by Post Malone and 21 Pilots' performances. No comment on Halsey's. The worst part of this tribute is seeing Mary Mary perform, What was that yellow dress and menarche red hair one of them was rocking tonight? No no no.

That s**t J.Lo just lipped to has got to be the most generic, blandest song of 2018. Yikes! You mean Mariah?

The show was an okay diversion. Some of those winners were a complete joke, but who takes this fan voting sh*t seriously anyway? And I like Tracee's corny mom energy, she's adorable.
Taylor Swift's stage and production were amazing. Those vocals? Not so much. And what was with all the stop starting? It was annoying. Carrie Underwood served, after seeing J.Lo and Camila perform those horrible ballads, it was refreshing to have an actual singer step on the stage. Seriously though, that J.Lo song was horrendous, why is it so hard for her to record a decent song? And Camila has no business trying to sing a big ballad, those vocals were BROKEN. I still don't understand Post Malone and I don't think I ever will. And what was that Halsey/Khalid nap break even supposed to be about anyway? Mariah Carey... ugh. Loved the little entrance, but that performance was not it. Lipping that easy ass song? She's better than that. Cardi gave the show some much needed life, loved the color and how fun it was. Ciara served a fun performance as well, although I feel like Missy could have been utilized better. Shawn Mendes was fine (but those pants were giving the real performance). I was pleased with how Ella Mai sounded, I think she sounds kinda crap on record, she was stronger than I thought she would be. Dua Lipa is one of those artists I want to get on board with, but just can't because she's such a non-entity. I was dying at her choreographed walking. I loathe Panic! At The Disco, but that was a passable/cute Queen tribute. And why is Brendon looking so cute lately? 21 Pilots sounded bad, was something off with the sound during their performance? And the Aretha tribute was great, those heathens in the audience needed a cleansing. Glady's still sounds good and so does Cece and Mary Mary. Glad to hear some well preserved voices on that stage.
Carrie Aretha tribute Ciara Cardi

No surprise here: American Music Awards had 6.6 million total viewers and a 1.8 demo rating, dropping 28 and 25 percent from last year to mark all-time lows

Oh shit. I forgot about Queen Cardi's performance but I legit loved it and I would place her between Carrie and Mariah. No one was really a match for the three Cs though: Christ, Carrie, and Ciara.

It was getting killed in the ratings by football. It's a real conundrum. People are just losing interest in awards shows in general as the years tick by. We have so much access to our favorites these days, I think a lot of the thrill is gone.

Awards shows can still make headlines and the people who are interested are talking about them. Also, they're an easy way for media to photograph and interview celebrities at once. I think it's the awards themselves that are in trouble. Like does a Grammy mean a thing since everyone and their mother has got one (there used to be like 120 kategories).
Loved Taylor's performance, pop star doing her thing at best.

I don't think ABC thought it would do worse without NFL competition, but as you mentioned awards shows are sliding, it's three big factors: 1) the awards don't really mean that much since there are so many of them; 2) lots of similar live performances are readily available on YouTube, etc. (and they'll end up there after the show anyway); and 3) politics - people of all political persuasions want to escape and be entertained after a long day at work, not hear opinions of rich, entitled celebrities - as Paula Abdul might say, "Shut Up and Dance!" :)

I think the bolded is key... and to add to it... you can essentially watch the show via clips on twitter (within minutes) and interact (stan, troll, etc) with other fans while doing so. This is obviously more true of the younger folks, which is who these shows are trying to cater to. They do all these social media tie-ins in an attempt to get that demo interested in watching, but in the process, they continue to undermine their own viewership of the actual telecast by directing them to social media where they spend their time and watch the clips they want to watch without all the ads, etc. To be fair, it's really network TV in general these days. It's no longer essential to watch things when they air, if at all. So many other options.

Ratings: Taylor Swift Can’t Save AMAs From Hitting New All-Time Low www.thewrap.com/taylor-swift-amas-hit-new-all-time-low-ratings/ABC’s “AMAs” set a new record low in TV ratings on Tuesday, despite Taylor Swift opening the show with a performance and closing it by clutching the evening’s top award. The “American Music Awards” settled for a 1.8 rating this year among adults 18-49, which is the demographic most attractive to advertisers. It had a 2.4 in 2017 when the special aired on a Sunday in November. Last year’s 2.4 tied the previous record-low set by the 2016 version. Here are the (mostly) comparable 2017 AMAs ratings. That one didn’t do great either, but its Nielsen returns were 25 percent better than last night’s.
