www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/8205904/black-panther-album-billboard-200-chart-no-1'Black Panther: The Album' Debuts at No. 1 on Billboard 200 Chart 2/18/2018 by Keith Caulfield Black Panther: The Album debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, launching with 154,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending Feb. 15, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 52,000 are in traditional album sales. The set, which features music from and inspired by the blockbuster Marvel Studios film Black Panther, garners the biggest week for a soundtrack — in terms of total units earned — in a year-and-a-half. The last soundtrack to score a larger week was Suicide Squad: The Album, which bowed atop the Aug. 27, 2016-dated list with 182,000 units earned. Black Panther: The Album was released on Feb. 9 through Top Dawg/Aftermath/Interscope Records. The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new Feb. 24-dated chart (where Black Panther: The Album starts at No. 1) will be posted in full on Billboard's websites on Wednesday (Feb. 21) — one day later than usual, due to the Presidents’ Day holiday in the U.S. on Feb. 19. The Black Panther album includes a number of songs by Kendrick Lamar, who curated and produced the hip-hop-heavy album with Top Dawg Entertainment’s founder/CEO Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith. The set’s tunes also boast contributions from The Weeknd, SZA, Khalid and James Blake, among others. The album is the fifth No. 1 for Top Dawg, following a trio of leaders from Lamar (DAMN., untitled unmastered. and To Pimp a Butterfly) and ScHoolboy Q’s Oxymoron. Black Panther is the second soundtrack to reach No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in 2018, following The Greatest Showman, which spent two weeks atop the list (dated Jan. 13 and 20). The 14-track Black Panther album’s debut is powered mostly by streams, as the set collected 93,000 streaming equivalent album units. (The remainder of its bow came from traditional album sales: 52,000; and track equivalent album units: 9,000.) It’s not unusual to see such a large streaming number for Black Panther: The Album, as hip-hop albums tend to perform well on streaming services. Black Panther: The Album’s 93,000 SEA unit launch equates to 138.9 million on-demand audio streams for the album’s songs in the week ending Feb. 15. That’s the largest streaming week ever for a soundtrack, surging past the 40.4 million on-demand audio streams The Greatest Showman collected in the week ending Jan. 25. Of Black Panther: The Album’s 14 songs, three are heard in the Black Panther film. According to Top Dawg and Walt Disney Studios (Marvel’s parent company), this is the first time in Marvel Cinematic Universe history that Marvel Studios has integrated multiple original recordings specifically for a film. (The Marvel Cinematic Universe includes 18 films that have been released thus far, stretching back to Iron Man in 2008.) Black Panther: The Album isn’t the first chart-topping soundtrack set to consist mostly of music inspired by a film, with few tracks actually heard in its companion movie. It follows similar albums such as The Hunger Games: Songs From District 12 and Beyond (2012) and Men in Black: The Album (1997). At No. 2 on the new Billboard 200, Justin Timberlake’s Man of the Woods falls a spot in its second week on the list, with 74,000 units (down 75 percent). The Greatest Showman soundtrack holds steady at No. 3 with 72,000 units (down 10 percent), while Migos’ Culture II slips from No. 2 to No. 4 with 68,000 units (down 23 percent). The soundtrack to Fifty Shades Freed bows at No. 5 with 58,000 units (of which 36,000 are in traditional album sales). It’s the third soundtrack in the Fifty Shades film trilogy to reach the top five, following Fifty Shades Darker (No. 1 in 2017) and Fifty Shade of Grey (No. 2 in 2015). Fifty Shades Freed features songs by Liam Payne, Rita Ora, Julia Michaels, Jessie J and Sia. With Black Panther: The Album, The Greatest Showman and Fifty Shades Freed at Nos. 1, 3 and 5, the chart houses a trio of soundtracks in the top five for only the second time in the last 10 years. The only other time three soundtracks have populated the top five in the last 10 years was on the May 30, 2015-dated list, when Pitch Perfect 2 debuted at No. 1, Fifty Shades of Grey moved 6-3 and Furious 7 rose 7-5. Back on the new Billboard 200, Ed Sheeran’s ÷ (Divide) is pushed down 4-6, despite a gain, as it earns 42,000 units (up 5 percent). Bruno Mars’ 24K Magic falls 5-7 with 32,000 units (down 7 percent), Post Malone’s Stoney descends 6-8 with 31,000 units (down 4 percent) and Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN. dips 7-9 with just under 31,000 units (down 5 percent). Camila Cabello’s Camila closes out the top 10, moving 8-10 with 29,000 units (down 9 percent).

The Greatest Showman OST managed to surpass 500k in sales. I wonder how the record breaking opening of Black Panther will end up affect The Album's numbers next week.

In Record-Tying Week, Soundtracks Are Three of Top Five on Billboard 200 Albums Chart News By Keith Caulfield | February 19, 2018 5:01 PM EST
Black Panther, 2018
For only the 10th time since 1963, and just the second time in the last 10 years, a record-tying three soundtracks rank among the top five on the Billboard 200 albums chart. On the list dated Feb. 24, Black Panther: The Album debuts at No. 1, former chart-topper The Greatest Showman holds at No. 3 and the Fifty Shades Freed soundtrack bows at No. 5. 21) — one day later than usual, due to the Presidents’ Day holiday in the U.S. on Feb. 19.
Since the Billboard 200 chart dated Aug. 17, 1963 — when Billboard combined its previously separate mono and stereo album charts into one overall albums chart — just 10 weeks have seen a record three soundtracks in the top five. Here’s a look at the 10 times since 1963 where three soundtracks were among the top five on the Billboard 200 chart:

www.yahoo.com/entertainment/black-panther-soundtrack-makes-history-music-charts-070811663.html'Black Panther' soundtrack makes history on the music chartsYahoo Music Paul Grein, Writer Yahoo Music•February 19, 2018 In addition to setting records at the box office, Black Panther is making history on the music charts. The Kendrick Lamar-produced soundtrack enters the Billboard 200 at No. 1, even though Billboard’s sales tracking week ended Feb. 15 — the day before the movie opened in theaters. Now that the movie is out (and is the No. 1 film in the country), the soundtrack is a lock to hold at No. 1 next week. Black Panther: The Album posted 138.9 million on-demand audio streams for its songs in the week ending Feb. 15. That’s the biggest streaming week ever for a soundtrack — more than tripling the 40.4 million on-demand audio streams The Greatest Showman collected in the week ending Jan. 25. 'Black Panther' director Ryan Coogler tapped Kendrick Lamar and TDE Founder Anthony "Top Dawg" Tiffith with the daunting task of curating the highly anticipated motion picture's soundtrack. Black Panther: The Album is also the first hip-hop soundtrack to reach No. 1 since Furious 7 in April 2015, and it will be the first hip-hop soundtrack to log two or more weeks at No. 1 since Bad Boy II spent four weeks on top in August 2003. Black Panther has attracted considerable media attention because it features a mostly African-American cast (and director, Ryan Coogler) — important breakthroughs in a superhero film. In the same way, the soundtrack features an array of top black stars including Lamar, the Weeknd, Future, SZA, Schoolboy Q, 2 Chainz, Khalid, and Travis Scott. (Lamar curated and produced the album with music mogul Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith.) Black Panther: The Album has already spawned two top 10 hits on the Hot 100, The Weeknd and Lamar’s “Pray for Me” and Lamar and SZA’s “All the Stars.” Black Panther: The Album moved 154,000 “equivalent units” — a figure that combines traditional album sales (52,000, in this case), digital sales, and streaming activity. This is the biggest week for a soundtrack — in terms of total “equivalent units” earned — in 18 months. The last soundtrack to score a larger week was Suicide Squad: The Album, which debuted atop the Aug. 27, 2016-dated chart with 182,000 units earned. Here’s an odd wrinkle: Of Black Panther: The Album ’s 14 songs, just three are heard in the film. This isn’t the first chart-topping soundtrack to consist mostly of music inspired by, but not actually heard in, its companion movie. This was also the case with such soundtracks as The Hunger Games: Songs From District 12 and Beyond (2012) and Men in Black: The Album (1997). Black Panther is the second soundtrack to reach No. 1 so far in 2018. It follows The Greatest Showman, which spent two weeks on top in January. This is the first time since 1997 that soundtracks to two theatrically released films have reached No. 1 in the first quarter of the year. The soundtracks that topped the chart in the first quarter of that year were Gridlock’d and Private Parts. Two other soundtracks appear in the top five this week. The Greatest Showman holds at No. 3 in its 10th week, and Fifty Shades Freed debuts at No. 5. This is the first time that three soundtracks have ranked in the top five in the same week since May 30, 2015, when Pitch Perfect 2 debuted at No. 1, Fifty Shades of Grey rebounded to No. 3, and Furious 7 rebounded to No. 5. All three of the soundtracks in the steamy Fifty Shades franchise have made the top five. Fifty Shades of Grey peaked at No. 2 in 2015. Fifty Shades Darker hit No. 1 in 2017. Fifty Shades Freed features songs by Liam Payne, Rita Ora, Julia Michaels, Jessie J, and Sia. The Greatest Showman soundtrack has ranked in the top three for the past seven weeks. The soundtrack is doing even better in the U.K., where it’s spending its sixth week at No. 1 on the Official U.K. Albums Chart. Top AlbumsJustin Timberlake’s Man of the Woods dips from No. 1 to No. 2 in its second week. The album outsold Black Panther: The Album in traditional album sales (54K to 52K), but lost out when digital track sales and streaming were factored in. Migos’s Culture II drops from No. 2 to No. 4 in its third week. The album debuted at No. 1. Ed Sheeran’s ÷ drops from No. 4 to No. 6 in its 50th week. The album spent its first two weeks at No. 1. Bruno Mars’s 24K Magic drops from No. 5 to No. 7 in its 65th week. The album debuted and peaked at No. 2. Post Malone’s Stoney drops from No. 6 to No. 8 in its 62nd week. The album peaked at No. 4. Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN. drops from No. 7 to No. 9 in its 44th week. The album spent four weeks at No. 1. Camila Cabello’s Camila drops from No. 8 to No. 10 in its fifth week. The album debuted at No. 1. Two albums drop out of the top 10 this week. Lil Uzi Vert’s Luv Is Rage 2 drops from No. 9 to No. 11. NOW 65 drops from No. 10 to No.27. Hamilton: An American Musical rebounds from No. 24 to No. 20 in its 125th chart week. The original Broadway cast recording peaked at No. 3.Hamilton has sold 1,466,000 copies in traditional album sales, which makes it the fifth best-selling cast album of the Nielsen era (which dates to 1991). It trails the highlights edition of the original London cast recording of The Phantom of the Opera, (4.97 million), the original Broadway cast recording of Wicked (2.73 million), the original cast recording of Mamma Mia! (1.72 million) and the original Broadway cast recording of Les Miserables (1.66 million). Chris Stapleton’s From A Room: Volume 2 dips from No. 23 to No. 24 in its 11th week. The album debuted and peaked at No. 2. The album logs its fourth week at No. 1 on Top Country Albums. Ed Sheeran’s x jumps from No. 48 to No. 44 in its 191st chart week. The album debuted at No. 1. The album logs its 10th week at No. 1 on Top Catalog Albums. Coming Attractions: Look for high debuts next week by Nipsey Hussle’s debut album, Victory Lap, and Brandi Carlile’s By the Way, I Forgive You.
