yep that too, Lots of other duos that had long careers too Others that were groups became duos like Steely Dan and Air Supply Basically no curse on being a duo. After rethinking it some more, let me put it another way: I guess there's no curse on being a duo per se, but they do seem to crash and burn disproportionately relatively early in their careers, right after a huge album era (usually their first or second). I can't think of nearly as many group and solo artists who have had a similar career pattern. Alanis Morisette? Iggy Azalea?...Those are the only ones who come to mind right away. Just looking over past Best New Artist winners/nominees we see a ton of solo artists and groups who had a huge era then quickly faded for various reasons: Lauryn Hill, Norah Jones, Wilson Phillips, MGMT, Amy Winehouse (she had 4 years between Back To Black and her death), Meghan Trainor (unless this new single really takes off), Paula Cole, Macy Gray, Hootie & The Blowfish, Hanson, Jewel, Arrested Development, Ace of Base, Jon Secada, Color Me Badd, C+C Music Factory, Lisa Stansfield, Terence Trent D'Arby, Julian Lennon...and again that's just Best New Artist nominees! |

While both had a mammoth era, it's not like they didn't produce several successful albums that followed. Jewel with 5 more Top 10 albums and a sixth that peaked at 11. Norah Jones next five studio albums hit the Top 3, two #1s & two #2s - 3 of which went platinum.

When you have albums as big as they did, a normal selling album after that pales in comparison. No one can sustain diamond selling album success very long. |

Him & I isn't doing so hot outside of radio, it's on the edge of the top 40 on both Spotify and iTunes. If it ends up going top 10, it'll be similar to how New Rules was eventually pulled up by its airplay after it had peaked in other metrics. Between this, Now or Never and Bad At Love, I think that Halsey gets most of her success from radio. Him & I will probably be more successful than Now Or Never but not as successful as Bad At Love. |

The Beatles, Mariah Carey, Adele, Maroon 5, Bette Midler, Sade, Alicia Keys, Toni Braxton, Carrie Underwood...I know people talk about a 'curse' but when some of the biggest artists of their decades (and even all-time) have won, it's hard to take the curse seriously. Still Renfield's point was simply to say there are plenty of non-duos who have flamed out after an album or two as well. Are you saying that only happens to those cursed by a Best New Artist win or nom? |

The risk for Billboard in putting out a "could" article for something that is unlikely to happen (but possible), is that they can get backlash in certain cases when it doesn't happen.
For example, if in Camila Cabello's case they did an article saying she could be #1, it would probably be reported on in some pop music websites, her fans would get all excited and spread it round Twitter, etc. Then if she ended up at #2, Billboard would have a lot of people angry at them. Even though it's completely irrational to be angry in this situation, it's just the way a lot of people are.
They hear something they like "could" happen, and their brains seem to substitute "could" with "will" for some reason. Then they get excited and hyped up. Then they get angry when it doesn't happen. Then they blame the person who told them it "could" happen, as if they don't know what the definition of "could" is...
It happens in all walks of life. If the weather forecast says "It could snow tomorrow", a load of people get really excited thinking it WILL snow, then if it doesn't snow they get angry at the company who did the weather forecast. It's ridiculous, but Billboard have to look out for themselves I suppose.
This happens when you talk about averages. If you say "Men are on average more assertive than women" a lot of people's brains seem to read it as "All men are more assertive than all women". It's really annoying in these cases as you get branded a sexist when what you're saying something that's actually correct and also non-discriminatory.
Same with when you say the word "most". If you say "Most gay men don't like football", a lot of people hear that as "No gay men like football", and they reply with "I know a gay man who likes football" as if that disproves what you said.
I don't know what it is about so many people's brains that does this... It's incredibly annoying, so I understand why Billboard does this. Saying "could" only in cases where something is very likely to happen means they don't have to deal with the backlash very often.
