Bon Jovi's Back at No. 1 on Billboard 200 Albums Chart
Plus: 6ix9ine and Vance Joy debut in the top 10 with new albums.
Bon Jovi’s former No. 1 album, This House Is Not for Sale, is back atop the Billboard 200 chart for a second week.
The set re-enters the tally with 120,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending March 1, according to Nielsen Music, up from a negligible figure in the previous week. Essentially all of its sum is traditional album sales. The surge back to No. 1 is owed nearly entirely to sales generated by a concert ticket/album sale redemption offer with Bon Jovi’s upcoming U.S. arena tour.
The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new March 10-dated chart (where Bon Jovi returns to No. 1) will be posted in full on Billboard's websites on Tuesday (March 6).
This House Is Not for Sale first led the Billboard 200 on Nov. 26, 2016, when it opened in the penthouse with 129,000 units (128,000 in album sales), also driven by a ticket/album sale redemption offer. The set marked the band’s sixth chart-topper.
Bon Jovi’s tour kicks off on March 14 at the Pepsi Center in Denver. The 24-date U.S. trek is slated to wrap on May 24 at the Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. In total, Billboard estimates the tour may sell between 350,000 and 375,000 tickets.
For the tour’s ticket/album sale redemption offer, the price of the standard CD edition of This House Is Not for Sale was bundled into the purchase price of each ticket sold online to the tour. Customers received, via email, a redemption offer for the album, where they could choose to redeem the CD and have it mailed to them. The only sales that count towards the charts are those albums that are redeemed by customers. Many ticket buyers never redeem the offer.
This House Is Not for Sale is the second album to re-enter the Billboard 200 straight in at No. 1, following Chris Stapleton’s Traveller. The latter returned to the list on Nov. 21, 2015, jumping in at No. 1 for the first time, thanks to buzz generated by Stapleton’s big night on the 2015 Country Music Association Awards. Further, This House Is Not for Sale’s 15-month gap between stints at No. 1 is the longest amount of time for an album to reclaim the summit.
At No. 2 on the new Billboard 200, Black Panther: The Album moves down a slot after two weeks atop the list. The set earned 99,000 units (down 24 percent). Migos’ Culture II dips 2-3 with 59,000 units (down 7 percent).
Rapper 6ix9ine arrives at No. 4 with his debut effort, Day69, earning 55,000 units. Of that sum, 20,000 were in traditional album sales and 2,000 were in TEA units. Streams drove the bulk of the debut, as the set garnered 33,000 SEA units, equaling 50 million on-demand audio streams for the album’s tracks in the week ending March 1.
The 21-year-old artist (born Daniel Hernandez) only recently made his Billboard chart debut with the hit single “Gummo.” The song debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 chart dated Dec. 2, 2017, on its way to a No. 12 peak (Dec. 30). Through Feb. 22, the song had generated 312 million on-demand audio and video streams.
Following “Gummo,” he dropped two further tracks -- “Kooda,” and “Keke,” with Fetty Wap and A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie.” Both tunes also hit the Hot 100, and combined, the three tracks have amassed more than a half-billion on-demand streams. All three songs are featured on the 11-track Day69 album.
The soundtrack to The Greatest Showman falls 3-5 with 53,000 units (down 14 percent). It’s likely the album could see a rise on next week’s chart, following the 90th Academy Awards broadcast on ABC March 4. The show will feature a performance of the album’s “This Is Me,” which is nominated for best original song.
Ed Sheeran’s ÷ (Divide) rises 7-6 with a little more than 39,000 units (up 5 percent), while Post Malone’s Stoney climbs 9-7 with 39,000 units (up 24 percent). The latter likely gains due to excitement surrounding his new single “Psycho,” featuring Ty Dolla $ign, which was released on Feb. 23 -- but is not included on Stoney. (As previously reported, “Psycho” should start in the top five, perhaps as high as No. 2, on the March 10-dated Billboard Hot 100.)
Imagine Dragons’ Evolve ascends 13-8 on the Billboard 200 with 31,000 units (up 32 percent), following the album’s reissue on Feb. 21 with the band’s new track, “Next to Me,” and sale pricing for the set in the iTunes Store. Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN. moves 8-9 with 29,000 units (down 11 percent).
Singer-songwriter Vance Joy earns his first Billboard 200 top 10 album, as his second effort, Nation of Two, bows at No. 10 with 28,000 units (18,000 in album sales). He first reached the list with his first set, Dream Your Life Away, which debuted and peaked at No. 17 on Sept. 17, 2014, and has earned 1 million in equivalent album units (339,000 in traditional album sales).
Dream launched his hit single “Riptide,” which peaked at No. 30 on the Billboard Hot 100, No. 1 for five weeks on Alternative Songs, No. 2 on Hot Rock Songs, and went top 10 on Adult Alternative Songs and Adult Pop Songs. The new album was led by the single “Lay It on Me,” which premiered last July, and spent three weeks atop the Adult Alternative Songs chart, and went top five on Alternative Songs. The set’s newest single, “Saturday Sun,” is scaling both the Alternative Songs and Adult Alternative Songs tallies.

Yeppers: The Very Best of Prince sold 179,000 album-equivalent units (100,000 in pure album sales) in the week following Prince's death, thus allowing the album to re-enter the Billboard 200 at number one; this makes the album Prince's fifth number-one on the chart.

I think Bon Jovi's case is unique because their album is the first to re-enter at #1 that was also previously #1.
God but if you really want my honest opinion, this case clearly shows how the ticket-bundling scheme has become ridiculous. Label manipulation at its finest, nothing less. I predict there's going to be more funny cases like this happening again (as if falling to the 20's, 30's and below during an album's second week isn't funny enough) that will cause Billboard to rethink or eventually do away with allowing these bundles.
Funny though that even when labels are practically giving albums away for free, some people still refuse them. Or, maybe not exactly for free, but since the cost of the CD's seem to be absorbed by all ticket buyers even if they don't choose to receive the album, I wonder if the additional amount each ticket buyer ends up paying is 3.49 or less, which would be below Billboard's minimum price threshold for counting first week sales. If so, they shouldn't count should they? (this wouldn't apply to Bon Jovi's case of course)

"There must be satisfactory proof provided to Nielsen SoundScan that the manufacturer or distributer received a reasonable and customary payment for each unit from the concert promoter\venue or ticketing company." also label have to contact billboard/soundscan and get approval for bundle at least 15 days before bundle event.

Will be interesting to see if this falls completely off the BB200 without the bundle next week. The album plunged 1-43 on release; I can't imagine how bad it's going to be next week. New record set?

Don't know about that one, but it is already the first album title and first anything since "The Twist" to top a chart in two separate chart runs.
That ought to be worth something

It was a different recording, but honorable mention to Dolly Parton for taking "I Will Always Love You" to the top of the country chart two different times. Bing Crosby did the same thing with two different recordings of "White Christmas" in 1942 and 1947.

I have less issues with ticket bundles compared to streaming. If 120,000 people decided to redeem the album then it should be counted. Not sure why some consider it manipulation.

(this wouldn't apply to Bon Jovi's case of course) they have rules on price. I'm sure it follow the billboard's general price rule. But the concert promoter/venue, or ticketing company is not the end consumer. That is the concert-goer. The Concert promoter or ticketing company would be like the retailer in this scenario.

I have less issues with ticket bundles compared to streaming. If 120,000 people decided to redeem the album then it should be counted. Not sure why some consider it manipulation. I agree. I know plenty of people who buy concert tickets with the album download add-on but don't redeem it because they aren't interested. It requires interest, which is what the charts really monitor, not gross revenue. I also agree with the minimum pricing policy that's in place. Buying an entire (especially high-profile) album for less than $3 is basically giving it away and creates a sense of unfairness. I also recognize that the two things I've just stated may sound contradictory. It's complicated. The regular cost of the album is included in said concert tickets, so it's not discounted, even if it seems like it's entirely free. It's simply included in the overall ticket cost but doesn't count for the charts unless you actually show interest and redeem it. There is a clear difference in my mind.

I remember how eagles stole britneys album to be no.1. It's just effin not right. Right. 711,000 v 290,000 definitely 'stolen.' And this is coming from someone who thinks Blackout is modern day pop classic. If only she hadn't performed her Stepford Striptease. I'm not sure why ppl are pressed over the ticket-bundle when streaming is getting far too much credit on the charts over a long period of time. If you actually buy the album, you're 'hurting' that artist on the chart because it's a one-time chart event, no matter how many times you play it. However, if you stream it, it counts every time. Anyway, I'd love to see the BB200 and H100 move to a revenue chart.

On the whole Eagles v Britney thing from a decade ago ---- time to move on
On the ticket bundle- as this results in a conscious effort by the ticket buyer to purchase the album ,it should mean the same as if it was done at Best Buy
This is no different an an in-store promo, well... a little, the ticket bundle promo is aimed at people already making a purchase on the artist, so the return rate would be higher

www.yahoo.com/entertainment/bon-jovis-album-back-no-1-two-years-later-fair-180141960.htmlWhy is Bon Jovi’s album back at No. 1, two years later — and is that fair?Yahoo Music Paul Grein, Writer March 5, 2018 Bon Jovi’s 2016 album This House Is Not for Sale re-enters the Billboard 200 at No. 1, dislodging the hot-selling soundtrack to the blockbuster film Black Panther. How can that be? Bon Jovi’s album was boosted by a concert ticket/album sale redemption offer, in which fans who bought a ticket to Bon Jovi’s upcoming arena tour could also opt to get the album. A similar redemption offer enabled the album to debut at No. 1 back in November 2016. Many other albums have benefited from such offers. Just since last summer, such promotions boosted Arcade Fire’s Everything Now, LCD Soundsystem’s American Dream, the Killers’ Wonderful Wonderful, Shania Twain’s Now, and P!nk’s Beautiful Trauma, all of which debuted at No. 1. But while these bundles are an established practice in the music industry, they raise fairness issues. Is Bon Jovi’s album really the most popular album in America this week, or did the band’s team just capitalize on a quirk in chart methodology? The album owes almost all of its success to the two promotions. It sold 128K copies in traditional album sales in its first week. It sold 120K copies this week. But get this: In the 67 weeks between those tent-pole weeks, it sold just 78K copies — on average, just a little more than 1K copies a week. Last week, without the promotion, the album sold just 175 copies. Keith Caulfield, Billboard‘s co-director of charts, explained how these offers work in his chart recap this week. “For the tour’s ticket/album sale redemption offer, the price of the standard CD edition of This House Is Not for Sale was bundled into the purchase price of each ticket sold online to the tour. Customers received, via email, a redemption offer for the album, where they could choose to redeem the CD and have it mailed to them. The only sales that count towards the charts are those albums that are redeemed by customers. Many ticket buyers never redeem the offer.” In a previous column, he explained the rationale behind the promotions. “Artists and record labels have increasingly turned to offering ticket/album bundles as a way to sell music, as the traditional retail landscape has changed dramatically in recent years, and as album sales continue to shrink. Not only are a growing number of fans turning to streaming in order to consume albums (instead of buying them), but the brick-and-mortar retailers that remain in business have dramatically reduced the number of titles they sell in stores (as well as the physical floor space for those albums). In turn, artists have found new ways to sell their music — from selling them bundled with merchandise, to offering them with concert tickets.” Fair or not fair, This House Is Not for Sale will go down as Bon Jovi’s first album to log multiple weeks at No. 1 since New Jersey in 1988. That album, the band’s follow-up to their commercial breakthrough Slippery When Wet, spawned five top 10 hits on the Hot 100. This House Is Not for Sale has yet to spawn any Hot 100 hits. This House Is Not for Sale returns to No. 1 following a 67-week gap. That’s the longest gap between appearances at No. 1 for any album since Bing Crosby’s Merry Christmas returned to No. 1 in January 1958, seven years after its most recent No. 1 appearance. (That album contained his immortal “White Christmas.”) This House Is Not for Sale is the third album to re-enter the Billboard 200 at No. 1, following Chris Stapleton’s Traveller (following his big night at the CMA Awards in 2015) and Prince’s The Very Best of Prince (following his death in 2016). This House Is Not for Sale has been in release for 69 weeks, but this is just its eighth week on the Billboard 200. The album charted for seven weeks in late 2016 and early 2017. Bon Jovi’s tour kicks off on March 14 at the Pepsi Center in Denver. The 24-date U.S. trek is slated to conclude on May 24 at the Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. Bon Jovi will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on April 14. Howard Stern is set to do the honors. Top AlbumsBlack Panther: The Album dips from No. 1 to No. 2 in its third week. It spent two weeks on top. The album is No. 1 on Top Soundtracks for the third week. Migos’s Culture II dips from No. 2 to No. 3 in its fifth week. The album debuted at No. 1. 6ix9ine’s Day 69 debuts at No. 4. It’s the rapper’s debut mixtape. The 21-year-old reached No. 12 on the Hot 100 in December with “Gummo.” The Greatest Showman soundtrack drops from No. 3 to No. 5 in its 12th week. The album spent two weeks at No. 1. Ed Sheeran’s ÷ inches up from No. 7 to No. 6 in its 52nd week. The album spent its first two weeks at No. 1. Post Malone’s Stoney rebounds from No. 9 to No. 7 in its 64th week. The album peaked at No. 4. Imagine Dragons’ Evolve rebounds from No. 13 to No. 8 in its 36th week. The album debuted and peaked at No. 2. The album was reissued on Feb. 21 with a new track, “Next to Me.” It also was on sale in the iTunes Store. Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN. drops from No. 7 to No. 9 in its 46th week. The album spent four weeks at No. 1. Vance Joy lands his first top 10 album as his sophomore album, Nation of Two, debuts at No. 10. His first album, Dream Your Life Away, debuted and peaked at No. 17 in September 2014. That album included his top 30 hit “Riptide.” Four albums drop out of the top 10 this week. Nipsey Hussle’s Victory Lap drops from No. 4 to No. 14. Brandi Carlile’s By the Way, I Forgive You plummets from No. 5 to No. 76. Justin Timberlake’s Man of the Woods drops from No. 6 to No. 11. The Fifty Shades Freed soundtrack drops from No. 10 to No. 17. Kane Brown’s Kane Brown rebounds from No. 27 to No. 22 in its 65th week. The album peaked at No. 5. The album logs its seventh week at No. 1 on Top Country Albums. Ed Sheeran’s x drops from No. 50 to No. 53 in its 193rd chart week. The album debuted at No. 1. The album logs its 12th week at No. 1 on Top Catalog Albums.

www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/8237466/billboard-200-chart-moves-luke-bryan-kelly-clarkson-adam-levineBillboard 200 Chart Moves: Luke Bryan, Kelly Clarkson, Adam Levine & Blake Shelton Gain in Wake of 'Voice' & 'American Idol' Promo3/7/2018 by Keith Caulfield — Luke Bryan, What Makes You Country – No. 30 — Luke Bryan, one of the three judges on the revived American Idol, shifts 49-30 with his latest album, What Makes You Country (14,000 units earned in the week ending March 1, according to Nielsen Music; up 33 percent). The set likely benefits from promotion surrounding Idol's return to TV on ABC, following its 15-year run on Fox (2002-2016). Bryan also returns to the chart with Crash My Party at No. 191 (5,000 units; up 10 percent). The other two judges on ABC TV’s rebooted Idol — Katy Perry and Lionel Richie — are not on the chart. The relaunched Idol premieres on March 11. — Kelly Clarkson, Meaning of Life – No. 163 — Kelly Clarkson’s Meaning of Life jumps back onto the list with 5,000 units (up 30 percent), amid her publicity tour in support of her debut as a coach on NBC’s The Voice. The new season of the reality competition series premiered on Feb. 26. Two of her fellow Voice coaches, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton, also see gains on the chart. Levine’s band Maroon 5 notches a 4 percent unit increase with Red Pill Blues (holding at No. 34; 14,000 units) while Shelton’s Texoma Shore reenters the list at No. 175 with a 20 percent lift (to 5,000 units). The fourth Voice coach, Alicia Keys, is not currently on the chart. — The Beatles, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band – No. 69 — The Beatles’ former No. 1 Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band scores its best sales week outside of the Christmas season since the week ending July 20, 2017, as the set re-enters the Billboard 200 at No. 69 with 6,000 copies sold in the week ending March 1 (of its 8,000 equivalent album units earned in the week). The album is up 37 percent in sales and 122 percent in units following a CBS Sunday Morning feature about the album on Feb 25. — Daniel Caesar, Freudian – No. 85 — As Freudian’s single “Get You,” featuring Kali Uchis, continues to gain in popularity (23-20 on R&B Streaming Songs), the album climbs to its highest rank since Sept. 30 (No. 71) with 8,000 units (up 14 percent). — The New Broadway Cast Recording, Once on This Island – No. 154 — The new Broadway cast recording of Once on This Island arrives at No. 161 on the Billboard 200, marking the first cast recording to debut on the list since last July. Once on This Island launches with 5,000 equivalent album units earned. Nearly all of that sum was driven by traditional album sales. The set also bows at No. 31 on Top Album Sales and No. 2 on Cast Albums. The last cast recording to hit the Billboard 200 was the original Broadway cast recording of Anastasia: The New Broadway Musical, which debuted at No. 56 on July 1, 2017. Anastasia was one of only four cast albums to bow on the tally in 2017, in addition to the original Broadway cast recordings of Dear Evan Hansen (peaking at No. 8), Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812 (No. 87) and the Bette Midler-led new Broadway cast recording of Hello, Dolly! (No. 60).
