I just need another smooth and melodic Drake single. It can spend 5 months at #1, I don't care - just be solid ear candy. Isn't that kind of God's Plan? No.

How possible is it that Gods Plan may end up spending 16 or more weeks at number one?

Ariana's lead single is rumored to be released in April. I'm betting that will be the next #1.

We need Bieber to come out with his next song to knock him off. He's our only hope.

Yeah, with spring/summer coming, there's going to be a lot of potential high profile hits vying for #1. I don't think God's Plan will last another month on top.

They have stuff out already and aren't smashing. I would bet on Adele, if she chooses, or Bieber. Yeah Friends flopped, but he's had flops before. They could re-brand him.

Let's be honest, the only artist who can 100% debut at #1 is Adele. Just like 85la said "if she chooses" she can debut at #1 anytime, even with the weakest song on the album.

Beyonce could debut at #1 if she released the song to all streaming and download services, but that isn’t likely.

Beyonce could debut at #1 if she released the song to all streaming and download services, but that isn’t likely. true if she had Formation would be a #1 hit People say this a lot, but we have no proof that it would have done. I think the fact that it was only #10 when it eventually got a proper release suggests that it probably wouldn't have gone to #1 (or that if it did it would have been a front-loaded one like Look What You Made Me Do). Think of it this way, if Shape of You or Despacito were unavailable for a few months, they would've debuted at #1 when they were eventually released properly. Not being on iTunes or unlisted on Youtube for months wouldn't stop a massive hit song. I forgot how many weeks it was unavailable for, but a lot of songs are even still #1 20+ weeks after release like Cheap Thrills or Havana. It's only a guess, but I think it probably would've had a high debut (maybe #1, maybe not) in week one and then hovered in the 6-15 region for a few months. I can't for the life of me understand how people can state it would have gone to #1 as an absolute fact. There's a big difference between saying maybe a song would've gone to #1 and saying it definitely would have. I understand it gets competitive around female pop stars and their fans look for any way to score points against each other, but I don't like dishonesty. There might be a lot of people who don't follow the charts like we do who think Formation really would have been a #1 for certain. Also, remember the situation with Kendrick Lamar's verse in Control a few years back. The Internet was talking about nothing but his verse for days, it seemed like the biggest thing that week, Twitter was all over it, news sites were publishing articles on it, more than any pop song, and it somehow only charted on Bubbling Under. I can admit that Formation COULD have gone to #1. I have nothing against Beyonce at all. But it seems a lot of people can't admit that it COULD have missed #1. It's like people saying the Bible is 100% historical. There's simply no proof of it.

You’ve forgotten one factor that harmed Formation’s actual debut: the song had been available for free for weeks to download officially. Tidal, in one of their promotional stunts, let people get the single for free back when it released. In addition, the music video was available unlisted for several months, and received notable views despite that (which you can’t see the stats of anymore sadly because of how YouTube works; once you publish publicly, the stats start over). If the release was more public, it would’ve done at least twofold better than its album rollout, and the Super Bowl performance would’ve kept it in the top 10 for at least a month.

Formation premiered hours before the SuperBowl. She performed it to over 100 million people on release day. She wasn't even the main act. Yet, Formation and its video were easily the most talked about thing in pop culture from the moment it dropped until several weeks later. I haven't seen something like that happen often. It was very reminiscent of the release of the Wrecking Ball video or Hello, both of which were #1 hits, so I don't doubt for a single second Formation would have smashed its way to #1 in sales and streaming had it been allowed to do so.
To put it in perspective, the song became available for streaming and sales over 2 months after its premiere to 100+ million people. Yet, when it finally became available, did people forget about it, deem it old, and not give a shit? Nope. It went straight to #1 on iTunes and broke Tidal streaming records, allowing it to debut at #10 on the Hot 100 (because it still wasn't and to this day isn't available everywhere).
Hell the video was set to private for a long time, requiring the direct link to view it, and it still racked up views.

In this day and age, people aren't going to sit around and wait for 2 months to get their hands on something. If it's not available right away, they're either going to lose interest or obtain it through other means. No doubt this hindered "Formation"'s sales when it came out.

Yeah, I think that Formation could have peaked higher than #10 if it was released on the week of the Superbowl, But I doubt she would be able to get a #1 debut.
And I really doubt she would be able to get a #1 today without any of the added Superbowl hype.
If she does make an album featuring Jay-Z (assuming it's not the other way around), I think she could get a bigger debut than Lemonade. But, still no #1 debut.

Beyoncé isn’t THAT big of an artist Good thing we're talking about a specific song having enormous hype and reaction upon release and discussions relating to not only the song, but politics and race for several weeks after its premiere to over 100 million people and not Beyoncé herself.

I honestly can’t see an Ariana Grande song have enough streams to hit #1 How so? She was the 4th most streamed female artist on Spotify in 2017 and she didn't release any new material. Her 2nd album is the most streamed female album ever on Spotify. I can't see your point. And the hype for her comeback is through the roof.

It all comes down to rollout and pre-hype hype. If Justin Timberlake can debut at #1 with a random soundtrack song that came off the heels of his meh eras before that, Beyonce could with the right strings pulled, even Ariana could.

^ You think FutureSex/LoveSounds and The 20/20 Experience were "meh" eras? To me, it was more surprising that quite a long time after his previous era, 3 years, it did so well (though 3 years isn't THAT long), how long he waited to release his next album after that hit, failing to capitalize on it, and how poorly MOTW and its singles did when they were released.
