Black Panther: The Album collects a third week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, as the set climbs 2-1 on the list dated March 17. The album earned 76,000 equivalent album units in the week ending March 8 (down 23 percent), according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 15,000 were in traditional album sales.

The set logs the most weeks at No. 1 for a soundtrack since “Frozen” in 2014. Plus, Tory Lanez launches at No. 3.

With a third week atop the list, Black Panther: The Album has now logged the most weeks at No. 1 for a soundtrack since Frozen topped the chart for 13 nonconsecutive weeks in 2014. Between Frozen and Black Panther, there were eight soundtracks that reached No. 1, all spending either one or two weeks in the penthouse. Further, in the last 15 years, while 29 soundtracks have hit No. 1, only four have spent at least three weeks at No. 1: Black Panther, Frozen, High School Musical 2 (four weeks, 2007) and Bad Boys II (four weeks, 2003).

The new March 17-dated chart will be posted in full on Billboard's websites on Tuesday, March 13.

Black Panther: The Album debuted at No. 1 on the chart dated Feb. 24, and spent its first two weeks atop the list. It slipped to No. 2 on the March 10 chart.

At No. 2 on the new Billboard 200, The Greatest Showman soundtrack steps 5-2 with 60,000 units (up 14 percent). The album benefits from exposure on ABC TV’s broadcast of the Academy Awards on March 4, where the soundtrack’s “This Is Me” was nominated for best original song and was performed on the show by the movie’s Keala Settle. While the tune didn’t take home the Oscar, the show-stopping performance clearly motivated music consumers. The album’s sales grew 19 percent to 39,000 for the week. The set also gains thanks to its vinyl LP release on March 2, as The Greatest Showman also debuts at No. 1 on the Vinyl Albums chart with 5,000 copies sold.

With Black Panther: The Album and The Greatest Showman at Nos. 1 and 2 on the Billboard 200, soundtracks rule the top two on the chart for the first time in nearly eight years. It last happened on the June 26, 2010-dated list with the TV soundtrack Glee: The Music, Journey to Regionals at No. 1, and the theatrical movie soundtrack The Twilight Saga: Eclipse at No. 2.

Notably, it’s been nearly 20 years since two theatrical film soundtracks have monopolized the top two. One has to scroll all the way back to July 25, 1998, when Armageddon — The Album and City of Angels were at Nos. 1 and 2.

Back on the new Billboard 200 chart, Tory Lanez notches his highest charting album yet, as his second full-length studio effort Memories Don’t Die debuts at No. 3. The set earned 54,000 units, of which 15,000 were in traditional album sales. The album’s bow is driven mostly by streaming activity, as it tallied 36,000 SEA units (equaling 54 million on-demand audio streams for the set’s tracks in its opening week).

Memories Don’t Die follows Lanez’s debut effort, I Told You, which bowed and peaked at No. 4 on the Sept. 10, 2016, list with 52,000 units earned in its first week.


Migos’ Culture II slips 3-4 on the latest Billboard 200, with 52,000 units (down 13 percent), while Ed Sheeran’s ÷ (Divide) climbs 6-5 with 36,000 units (down 9 percent). Post Malone’s Stoney is up one slot to No. 6 with 35,000 units (down 11 percent), Imagine Dragons’ Evolve rises 8-7 with 29,000 units (down 4 percent) and Camila Cabello’s Camila jumps back into the top 10 with a 12-8 ascent, tallying 27,000 units (up 3 percent).

Rounding out the top 10: Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN. is steady at No. 9 with 26,000 units (down 9 percent) while 6ix9ine’s DAY69 falls 4-10 in its second week with 24,000 units (down 55 percent).

Film Soundtracks Rule Top Two on Billboard 200 Albums Chart for First Time in Nearly 20 Years

It’s a big week for Hollywood at the top of the Billboard 200 albums chart. On the March 17-dated list, Black Panther: The Album returns to No. 1, while former leader The Greatest Showman steps 5-2. Soundtracks, thus, are the Nos. 1 and 2 albums on the chart simultaneously for the first time in almost eight years, and theatrical film soundtracks rule the top two for the first time in nearly 20 years.

Looks like 4514 pure sales for Bon Jovi--- #27 on the sales chart this week (overall total sales 331,000)

That record could still be a thing; from what I've seen in the Chart Moves articles, #80-#140 can be around the 5,000-7,000 unit range on a typical week, so if it's weak enough in streaming/track sales, This Home is Not For Sale could easily end up lower than #98, which is the current record for #1 drops (set by that Brand New album).

Film soundtracks hold down the top two spots for the first time in 20 years


For the first time in nearly 20 years, soundtracks to theatrically released films hold down the top two spots on the Billboard 200. Black Panther: The Album returns to No. 1 in its fourth week on the chart. The Greatest Showman rebounds from No. 5 to No. 2 in its 13th week. This is the first time that soundtracks to theatrically released films have held down the top two spots since July 1998, when Armageddon and City of Angels ruled the roost.

Those were both rock-dominated soundtracks. Aerosmith and Journey had the key tracks on Armageddon: The Album. Goo Goo Dolls and Alanis Morissette paced City of Angels. By contrast — and very much reflecting changes in contemporary music over the past two decades — Black Panther: The Album is a rap album, while The Greatest Showman is a pop collection.


Keala Settle performed “This Is Me” from The Greatest Showman on the Oscars (though the song came up short in what was likely a close race with “Remember Me” from Coco). Black Panther has yielded two top 10 singles on the Hot 100 — “Pray for Me” by the Weeknd & Kendrick Lamar, and “All the Stars” by Lamar & SZA.


This is the third week on top for Black Panther: The Album, which becomes the first soundtrack to log three weeks in the top position since Frozen spent 13 weeks on top in 2014. Moreover, it becomes the first soundtrack to a live-action, theatrically released film to log three or more weeks at the top since Bad Boys II topped the chart for four weeks in 2003.

Black Panther is No. 1 on Top Soundtracks for the fourth week. (Likewise, the film was No. 1 at the box office for the fourth consecutive weekend.)

The Greatest Showman was the week’s top seller in traditional album sales, but lost out to Black Panther when digital track sales and streaming were factored in. This is the third time The Greatest Showman has been the week’s top seller but hasn’t ranked No. 1 on the Billboard 200. It is the first album to experience this fate three times.

The Greatest Showman is No. 1 on the U.K.’s Official Albums Chart for the ninth week. That’s the longest run for a soundtrack in the U.K. since Grease had 13 weeks on top in 1978.

Bon Jovi’s 2016 album This House Is Not for Sale interrupted Black Panther‘s run at No. 1 last week, when it reappeared on the chart due to a concert ticket/album sale redemption offer. Wanna know what happened to the album this week? It plummeted to No. 169. That’s the steepest fall from No. 1 since 1963, when separate mono and stereo charts were combined into one comprehensive chart. The old record for steepest fall was set last September by Brand New’s Science Fiction, which dove from No. 1 to No. 97 in its second week.

Let’s review: Two weeks ago, Bon Jovi’s album wasn’t listed on the Billboard 200. Last week, it was No. 1. This week, it free-falls to No. 169. I think Billboard needs to take another look at these concert ticket/album sale redemption promotions. This isn’t a hit album as much as it’s a tour souvenir — not much different from a concert program or a T-shirt. The Billboard 200 should be reserved for hit albums.

It sometimes takes something outlandish to make Billboard see the need to review its chart policies. Michael Jackson had best-selling album for six weeks following his death in 2009, but that album, Number Ones, wasn’t eligible to appear on the Billboard 200 because it was an older catalog album. Before the year was over, the rules were changed to make catalog albums eligible for the big chart. Unless Billboard wants to see more strangeness at the top of one of its flagship charts, it needs to review this policy too.

Top Albums

Canadian rapper Torey Lanez lands his second top-five album as Memories Don’t Die debuts at a career best No. 3. His debut, I Told You, peaked at No. 4 in September 2016.

Migos’s Culture II dips from No. 3 to No. 4 in its sixth week. The album debuted at No. 1.

Ed Sheeran’s ÷ inches up from No. 6 to No. 5 in its 53rd week. The album spent its first two weeks at No. 1.

Post Malone’s Stoney inches up from No. 7 to No. 6 in its 65th week. The album peaked at No. 4.

Imagine Dragons’ Evolve inches up from No. 8 to No. 7 in its 37th week. The album debuted and peaked at No. 2.

Camila Cabello’s Camila rebounds from No. 12 to No. 8 in its eighth week. The album debuted at No. 1.

Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN holds at No. 9 in its 47th week. The album spent four weeks at No. 1.

6ix9ine’s DAY69 drops from No. 4 to No. 10 in its second week.

As noted above, Bon Jovi’s This House Is Not for Sale plummets from No. 1 to No. 169. One other album drops out of the top 10 this week. Vance Joy’sNation of Two dives from No. 10 to No. 73.

Tech N9ne cracks the top 20 for the 11th time as Planet debuts at No. 14. The rapper’s top 20 tally includes one EP, Klusterfuk.

Kane Brown’s Kane Brown drops from No. 22 to No. 24 in its 66th week. The album peaked at No. 5. The album logs its eighth week at No. 1 on Top Country Albums.

The Coco soundtrack vaults from No. 120 to No. 39 in the week after the Oscars, where its key song, “Remember Me,” won for Best Song. This represents a new peak for the soundtrack, which previously climbed as high as No. 55.
Drake’s Take Care rebounds from No. 55 to No. 48 in its 262nd chart week. The album debuted at No. 1 in December 2011. The album returns to No. 1 on Top Catalog Albums, displacing Ed Sheeran’s x. This is its second week on top.

Coming attractions: Look for Logic’s Bobby Tarantino II mixtape to debut at No. 1 next week. Lil Yachty’s Lil Boat 2 will probably open right around No. 3. Jimi Hendrix’s Both Sides of the Sky may squeeze into the top 10.

Top Songs

Drake’s “God’s Plan,” which entered the Hot 100 at No. 1 six weeks ago, sits tight in its seventh week. “God’s Plan” is the first song to spend its first seven weeks at No. 1 since Adele’s “Hello” spent its first 10 weeks on top in 2015-16. It’s the first song by a male artist to spend its first seven weeks at No. 1 since Elton John’s “Candle in the Wind”/”Something about the Way You Look Tonight,” which spent its first 14 weeks on top in 1997-98.


“God’s Plan” seems likely to log 10 or more weeks at No. 1. It would be Drake’s second song to do so, following his 2016 smash “One Dance,” which spent 10 weeks on top. Drake is vying to become the second male solo artist with two singles that have logged 10 or more weeks at No. 1. Pharrell Williams was the first, but only combining lead and featured roles. He was featured on Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines” (12 weeks on top in 2013) and followed up with his own “Happy” (10 weeks in 2014).

“God’s Plan” sold 57K digital copies last week, which allows it to return to No. 1 on Top Digital Songs after being displaced last week by Post Malone’s “Psycho” (featuring Ty Dolla $ign). This is its fifth week on top.
“God’s Plan” logs its seventh week at No. 1 on both the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and The Official U.K. Singles Chart.

Ed Sheeran’s “Perfect” rebounds from No. 3 to No. 2 in its 28th week. The song logged six weeks at No. 1.

Bruno Mars & Cardi B’s “Finesse” rebounds from No. 4 to No. 3 in its 10th week. This matches its highest ranking to date.

Post Malone’s “Psycho” (featuring Ty Dolla $ign) drops from No. 2 to No. 4 in its second week.

“Meant to Be” by Bebe Rehxa & Florida Georgia Line jumps from No. 7 to No. 5 in its 20th week. This is Florida Georgia Line’s second top five hit, following “Cruise” (featuring Nelly), which reached No. 4 in July 2013. FGL is the first core country act to notch two top five hits on the Hot 100 since Taylor Swift amassed five top five hits while she was a core country artist, before she went pop. “Meant to Be” holds at No. 1 on Hot Country Songs for the 15th consecutive week.

Camila Cabello’s “Havana” (featuring Young Thug) dips from No. 5 to No. 6 in its 30th week. The song reached No. 1.

BlocBoy JB’s “Look Alive” (featuring Drake) dips from No. 6 to No. 7 in its fourth week. The song peaked at No. 5.

“The Middle” by Zedd, Maren Morris & Grey jumps from No. 11 to No. 8 in its sixth week. It’s Zedd’s fourth top 10 hit, following “Clarity” (featuring Foxes), “Stay” (a collabo with Alessia Cara) and Ariana Grande’s “Break Free,” on which he was featured. It’s the first top 10 hit for both Morris and Grey.

This marks the first time that there were two songs in the top 10 by core country artists since May 2000, when Faith Hill’s “Breathe” was No. 3 and Lonestar’s “Amazed” was No. 10. (“The Middle” is a pop/EDM track not being promoted to country radio, but Morris is a core country artist nonetheless.)

This is the second time in recent months that a core country artist has released a track aimed squarely at pop radio. Carrie Underwood’s “The Champion” (featuring Ludacris) debuted and peaked at No. 47 on the Hot 100, but didn’t chart country. The lines between genres are getting fuzzier all the time.

“Pray for Me” by The Weeknd & Kendrick Lamar holds at No. 9 in its fifth week. The song peaked at No. 7.

Migos’ “Stir Fry” rebounds from No. 12 to No. 10 in its 11th week. The song has climbed as high as No. 8.

Two songs drop out of the top 10 this week—Post Malone’s “Rockstar” (featuring 21 Savage) and “All the Stars” by Kendrick Lamar & SZA.
“Rick Flair Drip” by Offset & Metro Boomin’ vaults from No. 36 to No. 16 in its 19th week.

XXXTentacion’s “Sad!” is the week’s highest new entry at No. 17. It (surprisingly) debuts ahead of DJ Khaled’s superstar-laden “Top Off,” which opens at No. 22. The track features Jay Z, Future and Beyoncé (credited simply as B).
Camila Cabello lands her fourth top 20 hit as a solo artist as “Never Be the Same” jumps from No. 24 to No. 19 in its 12th week. By comparison, Cabello landed two top 10 hits as a member of Fifth Harmony.

Ed Sheeran’s “Perfect” tops the 2 million mark in digital sales this week. It’s the second song from his current album ÷ to top 2 million in digital sales. “Shape of You” is up to 2,670,000.

Nope, nothing unusual about the 1-169 Bon Jovi drop. Albums re-enter at #1 and drop over 100 positions all the time. A completely natural, organic spike in sales with people showing true interest and paying full price for the album. No sign of label manipulation or gaming the chart system. Completely normal.

Chris Stapleton dominates the chart once again with his sterling collection trio of albums for Mercury Records Nashville.

With sales of over 21,000 copies, Chris Stapleton holds down #1-3 on this week's chart collectively. He's now sold over 3.3 million copies of albums since releasing Traveller in 2015. Last week's #1 Luke Bryan sits at #4 with What Makes You Country's sales now approaching 240,000 scanned to date. Alan Jackson's Precious Memories double disc set has scanned nearly 200,000 copies to date and adds to those release's individual Platinum and Gold tallies, respectively.

Kane Brown's G0ld-certified self-titled Debut album sits at #6 while Kid Rock's Sweet Southern Sugar having scanned 136,000 copies to date (with out a big hit yet). Kenny Chesney's Live In No Shoes Nation sits at #8 with sales of 397,000 to date. At #9 is Chris Young's Losing Sleep. The album has scanned nearly 88,000 copies to date and jumped back into the Top 10 this week. Thomas Rhett's Life Changes has scanned nearly 250,000 copies to date. The album features three #1 hits, including this week's chart topper -- his 10th -- in "Marry Me."

Notables include Granger Smith's When The Good Guys Win, Brett Young's self-titled Gold-certified debut album, Old Dominion's Happy Endings, and projects from Reba, Montgomery Gentry, Walker Hayes, Upchurch and debuts from Josh Grider and Brandon Jenkins.

Billboard 200 Chart Moves: 'Weird Al's' 'Hamilton Polka' Pushes Cast Album to Highest Rank in Eight Months

Plus: The “Coco” soundtrack hits the top 40 for the first time, Joan Baez earns her highest charting album in over 40 years, and Bon Jovi takes a big tumble.

On the latest Billboard 200 albums chart (dated March 17), Black Panther: The Album jumped back to No. 1, scoring a third nonconsecutive week atop the list. Meanwhile, The Greatest Showman soundtrack skipped 5-2, giving the chart theatrical film soundtracks at Nos. 1 and 2 for the first time in nearly 20 years.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the week’s most popular albums based on their overall consumption. That overall unit figure combines pure album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA).

Now, let’s take a closer look at some of the action on the rest of the Billboard 200:

— Original Broadway Cast Recording, Hamilton: An American Musical – No. 16 — Following the release and promotion of “Weird Al” Yankovic’s “The Hamilton Polka” -- inspired by Hamilton: An American Musical -- the original Broadway cast recording of the show hits an eight-month high on the Billboard 200. The set rises 21-16, its highest rank since the July 22, 2017-dated list, when it was also No. 16. The album earned 20,000 equivalent album units in the week ending March 8 (up 9 percent).

“The Hamilton Polka” -- which is not included on the Hamilton cast recording -- was released March 2 and sold 17,000 downloads in the week ending March 8. It also generated 1.2 million streams.

On the day of the song's release, Yankovic and Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to promote and lip-sync the tune. Even though “The Hamilton Polka” is not on the Hamilton cast album, general excitement and curiosity around the “Polka” single encouraged consumers to buy and stream the album, and also purchase tracks from the set. The album sold 7,000 copies in the tracking week (up 15 percent), generated 1,000 TEA units (up 11 percent) and earned 12,000 SEA units (up 6 percent).

In December, Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda announced that new Hamilton-related content would arrive each month under the banner of Hamildrops. The first release was “Ben Franklin’s Song” by The Decemberists in December. It was followed by a video for The Hamilton Mixtape’s “Wrote My Way Out,” by Nas, Dave East, Miranda and Aloe Blacc, a remix of “Wrote” featuring Royce Da 5’9”, Joyner Lucas, Black Thought and Blacc (both in January), and then “The Hamilton Polka."

— Soundtrack, Coco – No. 39 — With Coco’s vault from No. 120 to No. 39, the album becomes the sixth soundtrack to reach the top 40 for the first time in 2018. The set’s jump comes courtesy of publicity generated by the film’s two Academy Award wins on March 4, including one for best original song for “Remember Me,” which was performed on the ABC TV broadcast. Before Coco, the chart welcomed new top 40 sets this year from Fifty Shades Freed (No. 5), Black Panther: The Album (No. 1), Pitch Perfect 3 (No. 20), The Greatest Showman (No. 1) and Star Wars: The Last Jedi (No. 12).

— The Breeders, All Nerve – No. 79 — The rock band is back on the list with its first album in nearly 10 years, as All Nerve enters at No. 79 (8,000 units; 7,000 in traditional album sales). The act was last on the list back in 2008 with its last album, Mountain Battles, which debuted and peaked at No. 98 on the April 26, 2008-dated tally. The group’s biggest album, Last Splash, peaked at No. 33 in 1994, and launched the hit single “Cannonball” (No. 44 on the Billboard Hot 100, No. 2 on Alternative Songs).

— Joan Baez, Whistle Down the Wind – No. 104 — The singer returns to the Billboard 200 chart for the first time in nearly 10 years, with her highest charting effort in over 40 years, as Whistle Down the Wind bows at No. 104 with 7,000 units. It’s her first new album since Day After Tomorrow, which was released in September of 2008 and debuted and peaked at No. 128.

Whistle Down the Wind is Baez’s highest charting set since 1977’s Blowin’ Away reached No. 54 on the Aug. 6, 1977-dated list.

Baez made her Billboard chart debut back on Nov. 27, 1961 with her album Joan Baez, Vol. 2. It topped out at No. 13 on the Billboard 200 the following year – her first of a dozen top 40-charting efforts.

— Bon Jovi, This House Is Not for Sale – No. 169 — Bon Jovi’s This House Is Not for Sale earns the distinction of the largest positional fall from No. 1 in the history of the Billboard 200 chart, as the set collapses 168 spots: from its re-entry at No. 1 a week ago to No. 169 (5,000 units; down 96 percent).

The set returned to the top of the chart thanks largely to sales of the album generated by a concert ticket/album sale redemption offer with the band’s upcoming arena tour. As we’ve seen repeatedly in the past, albums that garner big sales figures in a single week from such redemption offers will often have a huge decline a week later, when there are no further redemptions left to power the album on the list. Such is the case with This House Is Not for Sale. Notably, the album now has two of the top five largest falls from No. 1. When the set entered atop the list back in 2016, also powered by sales from a redemption offer, it fell to No. 43 in its second week.

Of the top five largest drops from No. 1, only one album was not driven by sales tallied from a redemption offer – Brand New’s Science Fiction.

Chart watchers note: Back in 1958, Elvis Presley’s Elvis’ Christmas Album went from No. 1 to completely off the chart in a single week. However, back then, the chart was only 25 positions deep, so it wasn’t surprising to see a Christmas album vaporize off such a shallow chart after the holiday season had concluded. (Much like how Pentatonix’s A Pentatonix Christmas fell 1-41 after Christmastime on the Jan. 21, 2017-dated tally.)
