Logic Scores Second No. 1 Album on Billboard 200 Chart With 'Bobby Tarantino II' News By Keith Caulfield | March 18, 2018 1:00 AM EDT
Plus: Top 10 debuts from Lil Yachty, David Byrne, Judas Priest and Jimi Hendrix.
Logic scores his second No. 1 album in less than a year on the Billboard 200 chart, as his new mixtape, Bobby Tarantino II, debuts atop the list. The set, which was released on March 9 through Visionary/Def Jam, bows with 119,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending March 15, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 32,000 were in traditional album sales.
The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new March 24-dated chart (where Logic debuts at No. 1) will be posted in full on Billboard's websites on Tuesday, March 20.
Bobby Tarantino II’s debut was powered mostly by streams, as the album launches with 82,000 SEA units (equaling 123 million on-demand audio streams for the album’s tracks in the week ending March 15; each SEA unit equals 1,500 on-demand audio streams). With 32,000 copies of the album sold, the remainder of the title’s equivalent units was generated by TEA units (5,000).
Logic topped the Billboard 200 less than a year ago with his last studio album, Everybody. The effort opened at No. 1 on the list dated May 27, 2017 with 247,000 units earned (of which 196,000 were in traditional album sales). Notably, while Everybody’s overall debut figure was larger than Bobby Tarantino II (thanks to Everybody’s robust debut-week album sales figure of 196,000), Everybody tallied a far smaller streaming bow.
Everybody debuted with 47,000 SEA units, which translates to 70 million on-demand audio streams. Though, Everybody arrived before Logic’s breakthrough single, “1-800-273-8255,” featuring Alessia Cara and Khalid, had become a smash hit. The track, from Everybody, raised Logic’s profile in the past year and gave him his first top 10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100. It peaked at No. 3 on the Sept. 30 Hot 100 chart, and was later nominated for two Grammy Awards, including song of the year. So, it would stand to reason that Logic came into the opening week of Bobby Tarantino II with much higher visibility with music fans, and thus a bigger week on streaming services.
Lastly, Logic’s previous mixtape, Bobby Tarantino, debuted and peaked at No. 12 in 2016 with 19,000 units in its first week (of which 16,000 were in traditional album sales). At No. 2 on the new Billboard 200, Lil Yachty notches a new personal high-water mark on the list, as he sails in with his new studio album, Lil Boat 2, bowing with 64,000 units (7,000 in traditional album sales). It’s his highest charting album yet, second top 10 effort, and best week in terms of units earned.
Streaming activity, by far, fuels Lil Boat 2’s debut, as it earned 54,000 SEA units. Even without album sales and TEA units (2,000), Lil Boat 2 still would have debuted in the top five from just streams alone. Lil Yachty’s first studio set, Teenage Emotions, debuted at No. 5 (June 17, 2017) with 46,000 units.
David Byrne earns his highest charting album ever on the Billboard 200, as American Utopia enters at No. 3 with 63,000 units. Unlike Logic and Lil Yachty, Byrne’s debut is driven by traditional album sales, as effectively all of its units were in pure sales (resulting in his biggest sales week since Nielsen Music began tracking sales in 1991). American Utopia’s arrival was enhanced by sales generated from a concert ticket/album sale redemption offer with the artist’s tour, which started earlier in March. American Utopia is Byrne’s first solo effort since 2004’s Grown Backwards, which debuted and peaked at No. 178. Since then, he’s released a trio of collaborative efforts: Everything That Happens Will Happen Today, with Brian Eno (No. 174 in 2009); Here Lies Love, with Fatboy Slim (No. 96, 2010); and Love This Giant, with St. Vincent (No. 23, 2012). The latter was Byrne’s highest charting album, only top 40 set, until the arrival of American Utopia. Byrne made his solo debut on the list in 1981 with The Catherine Wheel, which topped out at No. 104 in 1982.
The band Talking Heads, of which Byrne was a member, charted a dozen albums on the Billboard 200 between 1977 and 2009. Eight of them reached the top 40, with the act’s highest-charting effort being 1983’s Speaking in Tongues. The album reached No. 15, powered by its hit single “Burning Down the House.” The track was the band’s only top 10 on the Hot 100, climbing to No. 9. Byrne’s new album was led by the single “Everybody’s Coming to My House,” which has reached No. 5 on the most recently published Adult Alternative Songs airplay chart (dated March 17). With Logic, Lil Yachty and Byrne debuting at Nos. 1-3, the Billboard 200’s top three are new entries for the first time in four months. It last happened on Nov. 18, 2017 when Kenny Chesney’s Live in No Shoes Nation, Kelly Clarkson’s Meaning of Life and Chris Brown’s Heartbreak on a Full Moon bowed at Nos. 1-3, respectively.
Back on the current Billboard 200, Black Panther: The Album drops from No. 1 to No. 4 with 63,000 units (down 18 percent). The album’s parent film, Black Panther, continues to rake in the dough at the U.S. and Canada box office. Through March 18, the blockbuster film grossed $605.5 million (of its $1.182 billion worldwide).
At No. 5 on the Billboard 200, rock band Judas Priest roars with the group’s highest charting album ever, as Firepower bows with 49,000 units (48,000 from traditional album sales -- the act's best sales frame since 2005's Angel of Retribution bowed with 54,000 copies sold). Like Byrne, Judas Priest's bow was bolstered by a concert ticket/album sale redemption offer.
Firepower surpasses the group’s previous chart high, logged with 2014’s Redeemer of Souls debuted and peaked at No. 6. The two sets are the veteran band’s only top 10 efforts, though the act has been charting since 1978 with Stained Class (No. 173). The group collected its first top 40 set in 1980 with British Steel (No. 34) and its first top 20 effort with 1982’s Screaming for Vengeance (No. 17). The new album was ushered in by the single “Lightning Strike,” which has so far peaked at No. 21 on the Mainstream Rock Songs airplay chart. It’s the band’s highest charting single on the tally since way back in 1982, when their classic hit “You’ve Got Another Thing Comin’” peaked at No. 4.
The Greatest Showman soundtrack dips 2-6 on the new Billboard 200, earning 48,000 units (down 21 percent), while Migos’ Culture II descends 4-7 with 45,000 units (down 13 percent). Jimi Hendrix’s latest posthumous album, Both Sides of the Sky, arrives at No. 8, garnering the rock legend his 10th top 10 effort. The archival set -- released via Experience Hendrix/Legacy -- launched with 37,000 units, of which 35,000 were in traditional album sales.
The 13-track Both Sides of the Sky album contains 10 previously unreleased recordings made between 1968 and 1970. It’s the third in a trilogy of albums that house, according to Hendrix’s record labels, the “best and most significant unissued studio recordings remaining” in Hendrix’s vault. The series began with 2010’s Valleys of Neptune (No. 4) and was followed by 2013’s People, Hell and Angels (No. 2).
Both Sides of the Sky is the fifth of five debuts in the new top 10 -- the most the region has seen since the Nov. 25, 2017-dated list. That week, Sam Smith’s The Thrill of It All, Maroon 5’s Red Pill Blues, Blake Shelton’s Texoma Shore, Kelsea Ballerini’s Unapologetically, and Kid Rock’s Sweet Southern Sugar bowed at Nos. 1, 2, 4, 7 and 8, respectively.
Closing out the chart’s new top 10 are Ed Sheeran’s ÷ (Divide), falling 5-9 (33,000 units; down 8 percent) and Post Malone’s Stoney, dropping 6-10 (32,000 units; down 8 percent).

Judas Priest Earns Highest Charting Album Ever on Billboard 200 With 'Firepower' News By Keith Caulfield | March 18, 2018 5:25 PM EDT
Rock band Judas Priest debuts at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 albums chart with Firepower — marking the group’s highest charting album ever. The album surpasses the group’s previous chart high, logged when 2014’s Redeemer of Souls debuted and peaked at No. 6. The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new March 24-dated chart (where Judas Priest debuts at No. 5 and Logic’s Bobby Tarantino II starts at No. 1) will be posted in full on Billboard's websites on Tuesday, March 20. Firepower — the act’s 18th studio effort — bows with 49,000 units earned in the week ending March 15, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 48,000 were in traditional album sales — the act's best sales frame since 2005's Angel of Retribution bowed with 54,000 copies sold. Judas Priest's bow was bolstered by sales generated from a concert ticket/album sale redemption offer in association with the band's tour that began on March 13.
Firepower and Redeemer of Souls are the veteran band’s only top 10 efforts, though the act has been charting since 1978 with Stained Class (No. 4. Here’s a look at Judas Priest’s history on the Billboard 200 chart: Title, Peak Position, Peak Date Stained Class, No. 173, April 22, 1978 Hell Bent for Leather, No. 128, April 28, 1979 Unleashed in the East (Live in Japan), No. 70, Nov. 10, 1979 British Steel, No. 34, July 12, 1980 Point of Entry, No. 39, May 23, 1981 Screaming for Vengeance, No. 17, Oct. 30, 1982 Defenders of the Faith, No. 18, Feb. 25, 1984 Turbo, No. 17, April 26, 1986 Live, No. 38, July 11, 1987 Ram It Down, No. 31, June 18, 1988 Painkiller, No. 26, Nov. 3, 1990 Metal Works ’73 - ‘93, No. 155, June 5, 1993 Jugulator, No. 82, Nov. 15, 1997 Demolition, No. 165, Aug. 18, 2001 Angel of Retribution, No. 13, March 19, 2005 Nostradamus, No. 11, July 5, 2008 A Touch of Evil: Live, No. 87, Aug. 1, 2009 Redeemer of Souls, No. 6, July 26, 2014 Firepower, No. 5, March 24, 2017

David Byrne Achieves First Top 10 Album on Billboard 200 Chart With 'American Utopia' News By Keith Caulfield | March 18, 2018 4:48 PM EDT
David Byrne earns his highest charting album ever on the Billboard 200 chart as American Utopia enters at No. 3 with 63,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending March 15, according to Nielsen Music. The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new March 24-dated chart (where Byrne debuts at No. 3 and Logic’s Bobby Tarantino II starts at No. 1) will be posted in full on Billboard's websites on Tuesday, March 20. Byrne’s debut — his 12th charting solo set — is driven by traditional album sales, as effectively all of its units were in pure sales, resulting in Byrne's biggest sales week since Nielsen Music began tracking sales in 1991. American Utopia’s arrival was enhanced by sales generated from a concert ticket/album sale redemption offer with the artist’s tour, which started earlier in March.
American Utopia is Byrne’s first solo effort since 2004’s Grown Backwards, which debuted and peaked at No. 178. What decade is this anyway? David Byrne, Judas Priest & Jimi Hendrix enter top 10.
The calendar says 2018, but the top 10 on the Billboard 200 suggests otherwise. Of the five albums that debut in the top 10 this week, three are by artists who have been turning out albums for more than 40 years.
David Byrne lands his first top 10 album — either solo or fronting his legendary group, Talking Heads — as American Utopia debuts at No. 3. The album arrives more than 40 years after the release of Talking Heads’ debut album, Talking Heads: 77. Byrne’s album was boosted by a concert ticket/album sale redemption promotion, similar to the one that sent Bon Jovi’s 2016 album This House Is Not for Sale back to No. 1 two weeks ago.
Talking Heads’ highest-charting album was Speaking in Tongues, which reached No. 15 in October 1983. Byrne’s highest-charting album as a solo artist before this week was Love This Giant, a collaboration with St. Vincent, which debuted and peaked at No. 23 in September 2012.
Judas Priest land their first top five album, as Firepower debuts at No. 5. The heavy metal band’s last studio album, Redeemer of Souls, debuted and peaked at No. 6 in July 2014. These are the first two top 10 albums for Priest, who released their first album in 1974. As with Byrne’s album, Judas Priest’s debut was boosted by a concert ticket/album sale redemption offer.
Jimi Hendrix lands his 10th top 10 album, as Both Sides of the Sky debuts at No. 8. The rock icon has now had as many top 10 albums (five) since he died in 1970 as he did while he was alive. This week’s debut puts Hendrix back in the top 10 47 and a half years after he died at age 27. No other artist in chart history has cracked the top 10 this long after his death. Hard to imagine, but Hendrix would be 75 now, had he lived. If he was 75, would he still be popular? Or is part of his appeal that he is eternally young?
In addition, this week’s debut pushes Hendrix’s span of top 10 albums past the 50-year mark. The Jimi Hendrix Experience first cracked the top 10 the week of Oct. 7, 1967, with Are You Experienced?. Among rock artists, only the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and Bob Dylan have had longer spans of top 10 albums.
Both Sides of the Sky contains 10 previously unreleased recordings made between 1968 and 1970. It’s the third in a trilogy of albums that house, according to Hendrix’s record labels, the “best and most significant unissued studio recordings remaining” in Hendrix’s vault. The album was preceded by 2010’s Valleys of Neptune (No. 4) and 2013’s People, Hell and Angels (No. 2).
Byrne’s album was this week’s top seller in traditional album sales, but lost out to rapper Logic’s mixtape Bobby Tarantino II when streaming and digital track sales were factored in. The vast majority of the points that the Byrne, Judas Priest, and Hendrix albums accrued this week came from traditional album sales. By contrast, several hip-hop albums in the top 10 received the vast majority of their points from streaming. Since late 2014, both sales and streaming have counted toward placement on the Billboard 200.
Top Albums
Logic’s Bobby Tarantino II mixtape enters the Billboard 200 at No. 1. Logic’s initial Bobby Tarantino mixtape reached No. 12 in July 2016. Bobby Tarantino II is the third No. 1 in the past seven months that was a sequel. Lil Uzi Vert’s Luv Is Rage 2, which debuted at No. 1 in September 2017, was the sequel to a 2015 mixtape. Migos’s Culture II, which debuted at No. 1 in February, was the sequel to a full-length album that debuted at No. 1 in February 2017.
Sequels have long dominated the film industry. Now we’re starting to see more sequels in the music field. It makes eminent sense, even if the titles are less creative than a new and original one would be.
Speaking of sequels, Lil Yachty lands his highest-charting album to date, as Lil Boat 2 debuts at No. 2. His initial Lil Boat mixtape peaked at No. 106 in 2016. Lil Yachty’s first full-length album, Teenage Emotions, peaked at No. 5 in June 2017.
Black Panther: The Album drops from No. 1 to No. 4 in its fifth week. The album has spent three weeks on top. The album is No. 1 on Top Soundtracks for the fifth week. The film was No. 1 at the box office for the fifth consecutive weekend. It’s the first film since Avatar to top the weekend box office five weekends in a row. (Avatar was No. 1 for seven consecutive weekends in 2009-10).
The Greatest Showman soundtrack drops from No. 2 to No. 6 in its 14th week. The album is No. 1 on the Official U.K. Albums Chart for the 10th consecutive week.
Migos’s Culture II drops from No. 4 to No. 6 in its seventh week. The album debuted at No. 1. Ed Sheeran’s ÷ drops from No. 5 to No. 9 in its 54th week. The album spent its first two weeks at No. 1. Post Malone’s Stoney drops from No. 6 to No. 10 in its 66th week. The album peaked at No. 4.
Five albums drop out of the top 10 this week. Torey Lanez’s Memories Don’t Die drops from No. 3 to No. 16. Imagine Dragons’ Evolve drops from No. 7 to No. 12. Camila Cabello’s Camila drops from No. 8 to No. 13. Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN. drops from No. 9 to No. 15. 6ix9ine’s DAY69 drops from No. 10 to No. 20.
Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats land their second top 20 album, as Tearing at the Seams debuts at No. 11. An eponymous album by the ensemble reached No. 17 in 2015.
Taylor Swift’s Reputation rebounds from No. 29 to No. 23 in its 18th week. The album tops the 2 million mark in traditional album sales this week. It sold most of that total (1,216,000) in its first week, and took the next 17 weeks to claw its way to 2 million.
Kane Brown’s Kane Brown drops from No. 24 to No. 27 in its 67th week. The album peaked at No. 5. The album logs its ninth week at No. 1 on Top Country Albums.
Drake’s Take Care drops from No. 48 to No. 56 in its 263rd chart week. The album debuted at No. 1 in December 2011. The album logs its third week at No. 1 on Top Catalog Albums.
Top Songs
Drake’s “God’s Plan,” which entered the Hot 100 at No. 1 seven weeks ago, sits tight in its eighth week. “God’s Plan” is the first song to spend its first eight weeks at No. 1 since Adele’s “Hello” spent its first 10 weeks on top in 2015-16. It’s the first song by a male artist to spend its first eight weeks at No. 1 since Elton John’s “Candle in the Wind”/”Something About the Way You Look Tonight,” which spent its first 14 weeks on top in 1997-98.
“God’s Plan” seems likely to log 10 or more weeks at No. 1. It would be Drake’s second song to do so, following his 2016 smash “One Dance,” which spent 10 weeks on top. Drake is vying to become the second male solo artist with two singles that have logged 10 or more weeks at No. 1. Pharrell Williams was the first, but only combining lead and featured roles. He was featured on Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines” (12 weeks on top in 2013) and followed up with his own “Happy” (10 weeks in 2014).
Drake’s “God’s Plan” sold 49K digital copies last week, which allows it to log its sixth week at No. 1 on Top Digital Songs.
“God’s Plan” logs its eighth week at No. 1 on both the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and the Official U.K. Singles Chart. Ed Sheeran’s “Perfect” holds at No. 2 in its 29th week. The song logged six weeks at No. 1. Bruno Mars & Cardi B’s “Finesse” holds at its No. 3 peak in its 11th week.
“Meant to Be” by Bebe Rehxa & Florida Georgia Line jumps from No. 5 to No. 4 in its 21st week. This equals the peak position of Florida Georgia Line’s breakthrough hit, “Cruise” (featuring Nelly), which reached No. 4 in July 2013. “Meant to Be” holds at No. 1 on Hot Country Songs for the 16th consecutive week. Will it match “Cruise” for weeks at No. 1 on the country chart? The song topped the country chart for 24 weeks, which was the all-time record until Sam Hunt’s “Body Like a Back Road” logged 34 weeks at No. 1 last year.
Post Malone’s “Psycho” (featuring Ty Dolla $ign) dips from No. 4 to No. 5 in its third week. The song debuted and peaked at No. 2. “The Middle” by Zedd, Maren Morris & Grey jumps from No. 8 to No. 6 in its sixth week. Camila Cabello’s “Havana” (featuring Young Thug) dips from No. 6 to No. 7 in its 31st week. The song reached No. 1.
“Pray for Me” by the Weeknd & Kendrick Lamar inches up from No. 9 to No. 8 in its sixth week. The song has climbed as high as No. 7. Another hit from Black Panther: The Album, Lamar & SZA’s “All the Stars,” rebounds from No. 11 to No. 10 in its 10th week. The song peaked at No. 7.
BlocBoy JB’s “Look Alive” (featuring Drake) drops from No. 7 to No. 9 in its fifth week. The song peaked at No. 5. Migos’s “Stir Fry” drops out of the top 10 this week.
Camila Cabello’s “Never Be the Same” jumps from No. 19 to No. 16 in its 13th week. If it makes the top 10, this will be the first time that Cabello has had back-to-back top 10 hits.
Imagine Dragons’ “Whatever It Takes” jumps from No. 34 to No. 24 in its seventh week. It’s vying to become the group’s seventh top 20 hit.
Rich the Kid’s “Plug Walk” vaults from No. 48 to No. 25 in its fifth week. It’s the 25-year old rapper’s first top 40 hit. Logic and Marshmello’s “Everyday” jumps from No. 43 to No. 29 in its second week. It’s Logic’s fourth top 30 hit; Marshmello’s third.
Bad Wolves’ cover version of the Cranberries’ 1994 hit “Zombie” sold 44K digital copies, which allows it to zoom from No. 27 to No. 2 on Top Digital Songs. Dolores O’Riordan, the lead singer of the Cranberries (and the writer of “Zombie”), died on Jan. 15.

Billboard 200 Chart Moves: Three Days Grace Net Fifth Top 40 Album With 'Outsider'
News
By Keith Caulfield | March 22, 2018 9:41 PM EDT
Plus: Debuts from Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats and Nightwish, gains from Metallica and MercyMe.
On the latest Billboard 200 albums chart (dated March 24), Logic’s Bobby Tarantino II opens at No. 1, granting the hip-hop star his second leader in less than a year.
The Billboard 200 chart ranks the week’s most popular albums based on their overall consumption. That overall unit figure combines pure album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA).
Now, let’s take a closer look at some of the action on the rest of the Billboard 200:
— Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats, Tearing at the Seams – No. 11 — Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats notch their second top 40-charting album on the Billboard 200 as the group’s second full-length studio set, Tearing at the Seams, bows at No. 11. (It also launches at No. 1 on the Americana/Folk Albums chart.) The title earned 30,000 equivalent album units in the week ending March 15, according to Nielsen Music, and of that sum, 27,000 were traditional album sales — the band’s best sales week yet. The set was led by the single “You Worry Me,” which is in its seventh week at No. 1 on the Adult Alternative Songs airplay chart.
— Three Days Grace, Outsider – No. 24 — Three Days Grace collects its fifth top 40-charting album, and sixth entry overall, as Outsider bows at No. 24. The set earned 17,000 equivalent album units, with 15,000 of that sum in traditional album sales. It’s the sixth studio effort from the band, and all six have reached the tally. It follows Human (No. 16, 2015), Transit of Venus (No. 5, 2012), Life Starts Now (No. 3, 2009), One – X (No. 5, 2006) and the act’s self-titled debut (No. 69, 2004). Outsider also launches at No. 3 on Hard Rock Albums, No. 3 on Alternative Albums, No. 6 on Top Rock Albums and No. 7 on Top Album Sales.
— Metallica, Hardwired… To Self-Destruct – No. 42 — The former No. 1 album bounds back onto the list (13,000 units; up 380 percent) thanks to sales registered from a ticket/album sale redemption offer for the next U.S./Canadian leg of the band’s WorldWired Tour. It’s expected that Hardwired will vault back into the top 10 on the next chart (dated March 31), as more redemption sales pour in.
— MercyMe, I Can Only Imagine: The Very Best of MercyMe – No. 99 — The greatest hits package zooms 118-99 with 7,000 units (up 11 percent) following the theatrical debut of the film I Can Only Imagine on March 16. The biographical movie is inspired by the story behind MercyMe’s hit song, “I Can Only Imagine,” and the songwriter behind the track, the band’s Bart Millard. On the Top Christian Albums chart, the best-of set already hit No. 1, marking the act’s 11th chart topper.
— Nightwish, Decades – No. 119 — The rock group’s compilation album debuts at No. 119 and at No. 3 on the Vinyl Albums chart. The set was a hearty performer on vinyl as 41 percent of the set’s total first-week sales (nearly 3,000 of 6,000) were via the format.
