The Weeknd's 'My Dear Melancholy' Heading for No. 1 on Billboard 200 Albums Chart
News
By Keith Caulfield | April 02, 2018 8:30 PM EDT
Plus, Kacey Musgraves and Rich the Kid aiming for top 10 bows.
The Weeknd’s surprise album, My Dear Melancholy, is aiming for No. 1 on next week’s Billboard 200 chart.
According to industry forecasters, the set -- which was released on March 30 via XO/Republic Records -- may earn around 150,000 equivalent album units in the week ending April 5.
The six-song album appeared with little warning, following a cryptic Instagram post on March 27, which led to a confirmation of an album two days later.
The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The top 10 of the new April 14-dated Billboard 200 chart (where The Weeknd will likely debut at No. 1) is scheduled to be revealed on Billboard’s websites on Sunday, April 8.
If My Dear Melancholy arrives at No. 1, it will give The Weeknd his third consecutive chart topper. It would follow his previous leaders, 2016’s Starboy and 2015’s Beauty Behind the Madness. Starboy bowed with 348,000 units in its first week, according to Nielsen Music (of which 209,000 were in traditional album sales), while Beauty Behind the Madness launched with 412,000 units (326,000 in album sales). Both titles were available in their first weeks on streaming services, and at retail as a digital album and CD.
My Dear Melancholy is currently only available via streamers and as a digital album. A CD version of the set is expected in the coming weeks.
Also on course for top 10 debuts next week: Rich the Kid’s The World Is Yours and Kacey Musgraves’ Golden Hour. The former may bow with perhaps 50,000 units, while the latter could enter with 40,000 units.

The Weeknd's 'Call Out My Name' Headed for Top 10 Billboard Hot 100 Debut
News
By Gary Trust | April 06, 2018 3:53 PM EDT
Concurrently, parent set "My Dear Melancholy" is slated to launch atop the Billboard 200.
The Weeknd's "Call Out My Name" is aiming to debut in the top 10, and perhaps the top five, of next week's Billboard Hot 100 chart (dated April 14), as parent set My Dear Melancholy is headed for a No. 1 launch on the Billboard 200.
Based on preliminary data projecting the tracking period feeding next week's Hot 100, the song, on XO/Republic Records, should bow in the top five of both the Streaming Songs and Digital Song Sales charts, with over 35 million U.S. streams and over 30,000 downloads sold in the week ending April 5.
The song is from The Weeknd's new album, which looks primed to open atop the Billboard 200 with around 150,000 equivalent album units in the week ending April 5.
The Weeknd is seeking his eighth Hot 100 top 10. He notched his seventh in February, when "Pray for Me," his Kendrick Lamar duet from the soundtrack Black Panther: The Album, debuted at its No. 7 peak (marking his highest entrance).
Meanwhile, My Dear Melancholy should arrive as The Weeknd's third Billboard 200 No. 1 (all earned consecutively), following Beauty Behind the Madness in 2015 and Starboy in 2016.
Highlights of next week's Hot 100, which blends streaming, airplay and sales data, according to Nielsen Music, will post on Billboard.com Monday (April 9), with all charts posting the following day (April 10).

Wut? Surely 'Melancholy' will do better than 150k? HDD never predicted that low and it's been steady for all week on streaming.

^Remember that usually these Billboard articles tend to have very conservative numbers. They seem to have to copy and pasted the earlier prediction for the latter article. As a matter of fact, I see HDD has just over 167k SPS as their final number for My Dear Melancholy,.

www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/8298065/the-weeknd-no-1-album-billboard-200-my-dear-melancholyThe Weeknd Scores Third Consecutive No. 1 Album on Billboard 200 Chart With 'My Dear Melancholy'4/8/2018 by Keith Caulfield Plus: Top 10 debuts from Rich The Kid and Kacey Musgraves. The Weeknd logs his third No. 1 in a row on the Billboard 200 albums chart, as his latest project, My Dear Melancholy, debuts atop the list. The surprise release, which arrived on March 30 via XO/Republic Records, earned 1 69,000 equivalent album units in the week ending April 5, according to Nielsen Music -- the biggest week for an R&B album in over a year, since his own last album. Of that sum, 68,000 were in traditional album sales. The six-song album appeared with little warning, following a cryptic Instagram post on March 27, which led to a confirmation of an album two days later. My Dear Melancholy follows The Weeknd’s two previous No. 1s: 2016’s Starboy and 2015’s Beauty Behind the Madness. The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new April 14-dated chart (where The Weeknd debuts at No. 1) will be posted in full on Billboard's websites on Tuesday, April 10. Notably, My Dear Melancholy logs the largest week for an R&B album -- by equivalent album units -- in over a year. The last R&B set to post a bigger frame was Starboy, on the list dated Dec. 17, 2016, when it tallied 209,000 units in its debut week. Further, My Dear Melancholy notches the highest sales week for an R&B album in nearly a year. The last R&B set to sell more was Mary J. Blige’s Strength of a Woman, which started with 72,000 copies sold on the chart dated May 20, 2017. My Dear Melancholy is currently only available to purchase as a digital download, as its CD counterpart is slated for an April 13 release. (Most surprise albums don’t see their CD editions arrive until a couple weeks after their initial digital release due to the amount of time it takes to manufacture product.) Though My Dear Melancholy’s sales were solid, the album’s debut saw more than half of its units driven by streams. The title bows with 94,000 SEA units, which equates to 140.8 million on-demand audio streams of the set’s songs (each SEA unit is equal to 1,500 streams). My Dear Melancholy’s streaming start of 94,000 SEA units is the third-biggest streaming week for an album in 2018, following the debut frames of Migos’ Culture II (150,000 SEA units) and XXXTentacion’s ? (106,000 SEA units). My Dear Melancholy’s streaming sum is even more impressive, considering it was achieved with only six songs. Comparably, Culture II had 24 tracks assisting its big streaming start, while ? had 18. The biggest song on My Dear Melancholy appears to be its lead-off track, “Call Out My Name.” The tune is likely headed for a top 10 debut on the Billboard Hot 100 dated April 14. Finally, My Dear Melancholy is the shortest album -- by track count -- to hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in nearly eight years. In 2010, the Glee: The Music, Journey to Regionals soundtrack, which also had just six tracks, bowed at No. 1 on the list dated June 26. For the last six-track (or shorter) No. 1 album by an artist, one has to scroll back to the Dec. 18, 2004 chart, when JAY-Z and Linkin Park teamed up for the six-track MTV Ultimate Mash-Ups Presents: Collision Course. (The album was initially only available in a CD/DVD edition, where the DVD included the MTV Ultimate Mash-Ups: Linkin Park vs. JAY-Z TV special and other video footage.) Previous to Collision Course, the last six-track No. 1 set was George Benson’s Breezin’, way back on the July 31 and Aug. 7-dated charts in 1976. At No. 2 on the new Billboard 200 chart, rapper Rich The Kid sees his full-length debut studio album The World Is Yours arrive with 59,000 units earned. Of that sum, just 6,000 were in traditional album sales. The set’s SEA units were unsurprisingly large: 50,000. The album is currently enjoying a top 20 hit on the Hot 100 with “Plug Walk,” which is Rich The Kid’s highest-charting hit. XXXTentacion’s former No. 1, ?, dips from No. 2 to No. 3 with 57,000 units (down 25 percent). Singer Kacey Musgraves collects her third top 10 album, as her seventh studio album Golden Hour bows at No. 4 with 49,000 units (with 39,000 of that sum powered by traditional album sales). Musgraves previously visited the top 10 with Pageant Material (No. 3 in 2015) and Same Trailer Different Park (No. 2, 2013). Golden Hour is the highest charting country album since Luke Bryan’s What Makes You Country launched at No. 1 on the Dec. 30, 2017-dated list. The soundtrack to The Greatest Showman slips one spot to No. 5 with 46,000 units (down 3 percent). As for the rest of the top 10: Black Panther: The Album falls 3-6 with 43,000 units (down 9 percent) Migos’ Culture II drops 5-7 with 41,000 units (down 8 percent) Post Malone’s Stoney descends 7-8 with 29,000 units (down 3 percent) Ed Sheeran’s ÷ (Divide) moves 8-9 with 28,000 units (down 4 percent) Logic’s Bobby Tarantino II slides 6-10 with 27,000 units (down 20 percent)

That's more than a 93% pure sales drop for Jack White's album. I wonder what that will translate into in terms of the Billboard 200 drop from #1.

Kacey Musgraves Clocks No. 1 Debut on Top Country Albums Chart With 'Golden Hour'
NewsRecord Labels
By Jim Asker | April 10, 2018 11:22 AM EDT
The set also starts atop Americana/Folk Albums.
Singer-songwriter Kacey Musgraves' third full-length, Golden Hour, debuts at No. 1 on Billboard's Top Country Albums chart (dated April 14), earning 49,000 equivalent album units in its first week ending April 5, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 39,000 are from traditional album sales.
The set, with all 13 tracks co-authored by Musgraves, also debuts at No. 1 on Americana/Folk Albums.
Golden Hour marks Musgraves' third No. 1 on Top Country Albums. Her debut, Same Trailer Different Park, bowed atop the list dated April 6, 2013, with 43,000 sold, followed by Pageant Material, which debuted atop the July 11, 2015-dated tally with 55,000 sold, marking Musgraves' biggest sales week. (She additionally reached No. 11 in December 2016 with A Very Kacey Christmas.)
Despite her impressive album chart success, Musgraves has garnered modest support at country radio. Says MCA Nashville vp of promotion Katie Dean, "We took a slightly different approach to launching Golden Hour at radio. We identified both 'Butterflies' and 'Space Cowboy' as potential lead singles and serviced the two tracks simultaneously, because they're an integral part of the narrative of this record. We've received airplay on both, in addition to [the set's] 'High Horse.' "
On Billboard's Country Airplay chart, "Butterflies" debuts at No. 56 with 574,000 impressions. "I'm going to make 'Butterflies' a single whether it's a [label-sanctioned] single or not," says WCOL Columbus, Ohio, program director Dan Zuko. "I've always been a huge fan of her music and I think 'Butterflies' is a perfect fit for our audience. It's a beautiful song from a beautiful voice."
Says Kevin Christopher, pd of KJKE Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, which leads all stations with 177 plays of "Butterflies" to date, "Simply, 'Butterflies' is a great song and Golden Hour is such a cool album. Musgraves has always done well for KJKE, and 'Butterflies' feels like a hit."
"Butterflies" marks Musgraves' seventh Country Airplay appearance. She's earned one top 10 so far, her debut single as a lead artist, "Merry Go 'Round," which peaked at No. 10 in 2013.
On the Hot Country Songs chart, which blends streaming, airplay and sales data, "Butterflies" re-enters at its No. 32 high, followed by the new LP's "High Horse," up 39-36, "Space Cowboy," a re-entry at No. 40, and "Slow Burn," new at No. 42.

The Weeknd Rules Billboard Artist 100, BTS Blasts to No. 2
News
By Xander Zellner | April 11, 2018 12:39 PM EDT
The Weeknd leads for a 15th week, while BTS hits a new high, for the group or any K-pop act.
The Weeknd returns to No. 1 on the Billboard Artist 100 chart (dated April 14) for a 15th total week on top, and for the first time since February 2017, as his new set My Dear Melancholy launches atop the Billboard 200 with 169,000 equivalent album units, according to Nielsen Music.
The Artist 100, which launched in July 2014, measures artist activity across key metrics of music consumption, blending album and track sales, radio airplay, streaming and social media fan interaction to provide a weekly multi-dimensional ranking of artist popularity.
The Weeknd also lands seven songs on the Billboard Hot 100, including all six tracks from Melancholy. "Call Out My Name" places highest, debuting at No. 4, while his Black Panther soundtrack hit "Pray for Me," with Kendrick Lamar, follows at No. 15 (after previously reaching No. 7).
In the nearly four-year history of the Artist 100, only Taylor Swift and Drake have spent more weeks at No. 1 than The Weeknd:
Most Weeks at No. 1 on the Artist 100 36, Taylor Swift 25, Drake 15, The Weeknd 11, Justin Bieber 10, Adele 10, Ed Sheeran
BTS vaults from No. 31 to No. 2 on the Artist 100, a new peak, as the K-pop kings' new set Face Yourself debuts at No. 1 on World Albums and No. 43 on the Billboard 200, with 12,000 equivalent album units.
BTS bests its prior No. 5 Artist 100 high, the previous top rank for any K-pop act.
Rounding out the chart’s top five, Imagine Dragons holds at No. 3, Drake is steady at No. 4 and Ed Sheeran drops 2-4.
Also in the top 10, Kacey Musgraves re-enters at No. 9, matching her peak 2015 peak, as her third studio album Golden Hour arrives at No. 1 on Top Country Albums and Americana/Folk Albums and No. 4 on the Billboard 200 with 49,000 units.

Billboard 200 Chart Moves: Hayley Kiyoko's 'Expectations' Arrives in Top 20
News
By Keith Caulfield | April 11, 2018 8:30 PM EDT
Plus: MercyMe's new greatest-hits album ascends to the top 25. On the latest Billboard 200 albums chart (dated April 14), The Weeknd notches his third straight No. 1 with My Dear Melancholy, which bowed with 169,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending April 5, according to Nielsen Music.
The Billboard 200 chart ranks the week’s most popular albums based on their overall consumption. That overall unit figure combines pure album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). Now, let’s take a closer look at some of the action on the rest of the Billboard 200:
— Hayley Kiyoko, Expectations – No. 12 — Seven years after Hayley Kiyoko made her Billboard chart debut with songs from the Disney Channel TV movie Lemonade Mouth, she scores her first entry on the Billboard 200 with Expectations. The set is Kiyoko’s first full-length studio release, and starts at No. 12 with 24,000 equivalent-album units earned in the week ending April 5, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 17,000 are in traditional album sales, which yields a No. 4 bow on the Top Album Sales tally. Kiyoko’s first chart action was on April 30, 2011, when a flurry of songs from Lemonade Mouth, in which she co-starred and sang in, arrived on the tallies.
— MercyMe, I Can Only Imagine: The Very Best of MercyMe – No. 23 — The best-of reaches a new peak, as it rises 36-23 with 16,000 units (up 27 percent) . Further, only two greatest-hits albums released in the last two years have gone as high: Elton John’s Diamonds (No. 23, 2017) and Paul McCartney’s Pure McCartney (No. 15, 2016).
— BTS, Face Yourself – No. 43 — BTS logs its sixth entry on the Billboard 200 in less than three years as Face Yourself debuts at No. 43. The Japanese-language album from the Korean group starts with 12,000 equivalent album units earned. Of that sum, 4,000 were in traditional album sales. On the World Albums chart, Face Yourself marks the act’s fifth No. 1 — the most among K-pop acts. The band previously was tied with B. A .P., GOT7 and Red Velvet, with four each.
— Greta Van Fleet, From the Fires – No. 65 — The set zooms (158-65) to its highest rank since its debut at No. 36 on the list dated Dec. 2, 2017. The album (9,000 units; up 68 percent) likely profits from increased visibility in the iTunes Store and on Spotify.
— Various Artists, Jesus Christ Superstar – No. 100 — Following NBC’s presentation of Jesus Chris Superstar Live in Concert on Easter Sunday, April 1, the original 1970 Jesus Christ Superstar concept album returns to the Billboard 200 at No. 100 -- the former chart-topper’s first placing on the list since 1972. The set earned 7,000 equivalent-album units (up 286 percent), with 5,000 of that sum in traditional album sales (up 298 percent). The various- artists album spent three nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1 in 1971. Jesus Christ Superstar was conceived as a stage production, but creators Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber couldn’t find a producer. “The only interest we could get on Superstar was as a record,” Rice told Craig Rosen in Billboard Book of Number One Albums. “As a second-best, we agreed we would do it as an album for MCA.” The release became a huge hit, bumping George Harrison’s All Things Must Pass from No. 1 and later earned a 1971 Grammy Award nomination for album of the year.
