Cardi B's 'Invasion of Privacy' Album Set for No. 1 Debut on Billboard 200 Chart

Cardi B is bound for a No. 1 debut on the Billboard 200 chart with her first studio album, Invasion of Privacy, according to industry prognosticators. Early forecasts suggest the set -- which was released April 6 via The KSR Group/Atlantic Records -- could start with between 160,000 and 210,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending April 12. That sum should easily enable the set to debut atop the chart dated April 21.

The first-week forecast for Invasion has a wide range because the album has only been available for one day. As the week progresses, the forecast will narrow to a more specific starting span.

If Cardi B bows at No. 1, she'll become just the fifth female rap artist with a No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart, and the first since 2012. She would follow Nicki Minaj (with Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded in 2012, and Pink Friday in 2011), Eve (Let There Be Eve… Ruff Ryders' First Lady, 1999), Foxy Brown (Chyna Doll in 1999 and the collaborative album The Firm in 1997, with Nas, AZ and Nature) and Lauryn Hill (The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, 1998).

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The top 10 of the April 21-dated Billboard 200 chart (where Cardi B could debut at No. 1) is scheduled to be revealed on Billboard's websites on Sunday, April 15.

In the meantime, the top 10 of the Billboard 200 chart dated April 14 -- where it is expected that The Weeknd's My Dear Melancholy will bow at No. 1 -- is slated to be announced Sunday (April 8).

The set, which was released on April 6 through The KSR Group/Atlantic Records, earned 255,000 equivalent album units in the week ending April 12, according to Nielsen Music. That’s the second-biggest week of 2018, trailing only the arrival of Justin Timberlake’s Man of the Woods, which bowed with 293,000 units on the Feb. 17-dated chart.

Of Invasion’s total unit bow, 103,000 were in traditional album sales -- the biggest sales week for an R&B or hip-hop album in 2018.

Here are some of the stellar feats that Cardi B achieves with Invasion of Privacy’s debut at No. 1:

-- Cardi B becomes the fifth female rapper to top the Billboard 200 albums chart. She follows Nicki Minaj (with Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded in 2012 and Pink Friday in 2011), Eve (Let There Be Eve… Ruff Ryders' First Lady, 1999), Foxy Brown (Chyna Doll in 1999 and the collaborative album The Firm in 1997, with Nas, AZ and Nature) and Lauryn Hill (The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, 1998).

-- Invasion of Privacy bows with the largest on-demand audio streaming week ever for an album by a woman. Invasion launches with 255,000 equivalent album units overall, and of that sum, 135,000 were in SEA units. That translates to 202.6 million streams of the tracks on the album during its debut frame. Invasion easily bests the previous record-holder, Beyoncé’s Lemonade, which launched with 77,000 SEA units (115.2 million streams) on the May 14, 2016-dated chart.

-- Invasion logs the biggest streaming week for a debut studio album, trumping the arrival of Lil Uzi Vert’s Luv Is Rage 2, which bowed with 100,000 SEA units (150.6 million streams) on the Sept 16, 2017-dated list.

-- Second-biggest streaming week for an album in 2018: Invasion nabs the second-largest streaming week for an album this year, behind only the debut of Migos’ Culture II (149,000 SEA units; 224.6 million on-demand audio streams).

-- Seventh-largest streaming week for an album ever: Invasion’s big streaming start marks the seventh-largest streaming week for an album, and the fifth biggest debut ever. Drake’s More Life continues to hold the record for the largest streaming frame overall, when it claimed 257,000 SEA units in its opening frame (chart dated April 8, 2017), equaling 384.8 million on-demand audio streams.

-- Invasion’s start of 255,000 units is the second-biggest week overall for an album in 2018, trailing only the bow of Timberlake’s Man of the Woods (293,000 units). Further, Invasion notches the largest week for an R&B or hip-hop album since Eminem’s Revival started with 267,000 units in the tracking week ending Dec. 21, 2017; and the biggest week for an R&B or hip-hop album by a woman since Beyoncé’s Lemonade tallied 321,000 units in its second week on the list (May 21, 2016-dated chart).

Invasion’s solid album sales figure of 103,000 is notable, considering many hip-hop albums by newer artists tend to be largely driven by streams and have relatively little album sales. Invasion has the largest sales week for an R&B or hip-hop album since Eminem’s Revival bowed with 197,000 copies sold.

Further, Invasion was only available to purchase as a digital album. It’s the fifth album to hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in 2018 that was initially only available as a digital download and via streaming services (following The Weeknd’s My Dear Melancholy, XXXTENTACION’s ?, Logic’s Bobby Tarantino II and Migos’ Culture II).

At No. 2 on the new Billboard 200, rock band Thirty Seconds to Mars scores its second top 10, and highest-charting album ever, as America debuts with 62,000 units. It surpasses the band’s previous high, logged when Love Lust Faith + Dreams debuted and peaked at No. 6 in 2013.

Of America’s starting unit total, 54,000 were in traditional album sales -- the act’s second-largest sales week ever. Its only bigger week was logged by the 69,000 start of This Is War in 2009. (America’s sales bow was enhanced by sales generated from a concert ticket/album sale redemption offer with the band’s upcoming tour, which starts on June 6.)

The Weeknd’s My Dear Melancholy slips from No. 1 to No. 3 in its second week, earning 52,000 units (down 69 percent). The soundtrack to The Greatest Showman climbs one rung to No. 4 with 51,000 units (up 10 percent), following the film’s DVD and Blu-ray release on April 10. XXXTENTACION’s ? dips 3-5 with 46,000 units (down 20 percent), Migos’ Culture II is up a spot to No. 6 with 37,000 units (down 9 percent) and Black Panther: The Album falls a slot to No. 7 with nearly 37,000 units (down 15 percent).

Rich The Kid’s The World Is Yours tumbles 2-8 in its second week, earning 36,000 units (down 38 percent), while Post Malone’s Stoney shifts 8-9 with 29,000 units (down less than 1 percent).
Closing out the top 10 is rapper Lil Xan, as he bows at No. 10 with his debut album, Total Xanarchy. The set tallied 28,000 units in its opening frame, of which 14,000 were in traditional album sales. The album was preceded by the single “Betrayed,” which hit the top 30 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, Hot Rap Songs and the airplay-powered Rhythmic Songs chart.

As Cardi B’s debut studio album, Invasion of Privacy, arrives at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, she becomes just the fifth female rapper ever to lead the list, and the first to do so since 2012. (Comparably, in the last 12 months, seven different male solo rappers have led the tally.)

America has since scored another hit single with “Dangerous Night,” which has so far climbed to No. 8 on the Alternative Songs chart (dated April 14), becoming the group’s ninth top 10 on the tally.

Cardi B Rules Billboard Artist 100 Chart for First Time

The MC is just the second woman to lead the list this year.

Cardi B jumps from No. 6 to No. 1 on the Billboard Artist 100 chart (dated April 21) to become the top musical act in the U.S. for the first time, powered by the arrival of her debut LP Invasion of Privacy.
The Artist 100, which launched in July 2014, measures artist activity across key metrics of music consumption, blending album and track sales, radio airplay, streaming and social media fan interaction to provide a weekly multi-dimensional ranking of artist popularity.

Privacy debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 255,000 equivalent album units in the week ending April 12, according to Nielsen Music. Cardi B concurrently charts 13 songs on the latest Billboard Hot 100, passing Beyoncé for the most simultaneous Hot 100 entries by a woman. "I Like It," with Bad Bunny and J Balvin, debuts the highest, at No. 8, earning Cardi B her fifth top 10.

Cardi B previously peaked at No. 3 on the Artist 100 in January following the release of her "Finesse" remix with Bruno Mars.

Cardi B is just the second solo female to lead the Artist 100 this year, following Camila Cabello on Jan. 27.

Meanwhile, Thirty Seconds to Mars debuts at No. 5 on the ranking, as the group's fifth studio album, America, arrives at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 (62,000 units). The album is the band's highest-charting set and second top 10. Rounding out the Artist 100's top five, Drake lifts 4-2, Imagine Dragons hold at No. 3 and Ed Sheeran rises 5-4.

Among other Artist 100 moves, Underoath earns the chart's second-highest debut, at No. 32, as its eighth studio album Erase Me opens at No. 4 on the Top Rock Albums chart and No. 16 on the Billboard 200 (23,000 units).

On the latest Billboard 200 albums chart (dated April 21), Cardi B bows at No. 1 with her debut studio effort, Invasion of Privacy, becoming just the fifth female rapper to top the chart. The set starts with 255,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending April 12, according to Nielsen Music -- the second-largest week of the year for any album.
The Billboard 200 chart ranks the week’s most popular albums based on their overall consumption. That overall unit figure combines pure album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA).

— Various Artists, Revamp – No. 13 & Restoration – No. 36 — Twenty-six years after Elton John and Bernie Taupin received the tribute album treatment with Two Rooms: Celebrating the Songs of Elton John & Bernie Taupin, the songwriting team is being feted again with two star-studded sets: Revamp and Restoration. Both albums carry the subtitle Reimagining the Songs of Elton John & Bernie Taupin.
The pop- and rock-leaning Revamp, which features P!nk and Ed Sheeran covering John & Taupin tunes, bows at No. 13 on the Billboard 200 (25,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending April 12, according to Nielsen Music). The country-flavored Restoration -- boasting Little Big Town and Chris Stapleton, among others -- starts at No. 36 (15,000 units).
Revamp and Restoration also arrive at Nos. 2 and 4 on the Top Rock Albums and Top Country Albums charts, respectively.
The two sets follow Two Rooms, which arrived in 1991 and climbed to No. 18 the following year. The album has sold 1.4 million copies and helped usher in a bevy of tribute projects in the mid-1990s. Among them were Common Thread: The Songs of the Eagles (No. 3, in 1993), Stone Free: A Tribute to Jimi Hendrix (No. 28, 1993), Kiss My Ass: Classic Kiss Regrooved (No. 19, 1994) and Encomium: A Tribute to Led Zeppelin (No. 17, 1995).

— Bazzi, Cosmic – No. 35 — Bazzi bows at No. 35 with his debut effort, Cosmic, following a partial week of activity after the album’s off-cycle release on Thursday, April 12 (instead of on a Friday, when most albums are released, ensuring that it would get a full seven days of tracking in its debut week). The set -- which starts with 15,000 equivalent album units (mostly driven by streaming activity) -- will likely hold in the top 40 on the April 28-dated Billboard 200, following its first full week of charting activity.

— Soundtrack, Jesus Christ Superstar: Live in Concert – No. 46 — The April 1 live NBC-TV concert rendition of Jesus Christ Superstar launches at No. 46 with 13,000 equivalent album units earned, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 11,000 were in traditional album sales. The set (out April 6) is the fifth iteration of Superstar to reach the chart. It was preceded by the concept album (No. 1, 1971), Percy Faith’s instrumental highlights set (No. 186, 1972), the original Broadway cast recording (No. 31, 1972) and the movie soundtrack (No. 21, 1973).

— Kylie Minogue, Golden – No. 64 — Kylie Minogue arrives at No. 64 with her ninth chart entry, and first independently-distributed album in the U.S., as new studio album Golden takes a bow.
The pop princess’ new effort starts with 10,000 equivalent album units, of which 8,000 were in traditional album sales. The latter figure enables Golden’s launch at No. 4 on the Independent Albums tally. Golden, released through BMG, is Minogue’s first indie-distributed set after having her entire previous U.S. catalog go through major labels and distribution. (She was most recently with Parlophone/Warner Bros.)
On the Billboard 200, Golden arrives almost 30 years after Minogue’s U.S. debut set, Kylie, entered the list on Sept. 10, 1988.
Golden’s lead single, “Dancing,” rises 9-5 on Dance Club Songs. It’s her 18th top 10 hit on the list.

— Lorde, Melodrama – No. 68 — The album zooms 159-68 (9,000 units; up 76 percent, of which 5,000 were in traditional album sales; up 441 percent) after its vinyl release on April 6. It sold 4,000 vinyl LPs and bows at No. 3 on the
Vinyl Albums chart.

— Alice Merton, No Roots EP – No. 171 — Alice Merton makes her Billboard 200 chart debut with her No Roots EP at No. 171 with 5,000 units (2,000 in traditional album sales).



The five-song set was led by the hit title track, which in February reached No. 1 on Rock Airplay (the first No. 1 by a woman since Lorde’s “Royals” in 2014) and Alternative Songs (the ninth solo woman to top the tally in its 29-year history).
“No Roots” is now percolating on the Pop Songs airplay chart, as the track bullets at No. 27 (its peak). Meanwhile, the EP’s “Lash Out” debuts on Alternative Songs, starting at No. 39.
Concurrent with the bow of No Roots, Merton hits a new high on Emerging Artists, vaulting 11-3.
