I guess Katy Perry has to return to her Teenage Dream roots and Lady Gaga has to be bizarre again

Sometimes simply releasing the same old music does not help especially for artists who have already had their time at #1

^ Exactly, Katy needs to start making fun pop music again and Gaga needs to start being interesting again.

Cardi B - 13 songs charting second week in a row Wow. That's insane. Link? Are their positions known?

The even crazier part of this imo is that barely any of these artists are actually remembered outside of the chart watching community. Like sure, everyone knows who MC Hammer is, and there’s a few other names some people would recognize like Paula Abdul, New Kids on the Block, and Roxette, but aside from Rick Astley, who is really only popular because of memes...that’s about it. Crazy. You might have missed Bobby Brown on that list. That dude's pretty legendary. Still mentioned and name dropped on all sorts of songs. Milli Vanilli are pretty legendary too. For the wrong reasons of course. Milli Vanilli was mentioned on the new J. Cole album. I agree, Bobby Brown is definitely remembered. Much more so than Roxette.

I think one of the reasons why mega pop stars such as Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Justin Timberlake, P!nk, Taylor Swift are not doing so well is because of their production choices. They don't sound interesting or good in their recent songs, they seem to lack proper consistency when it comes to production. The reason why Ariana Grande is doing so well right now is because the production sounds interesting and Ariana sounds like herself. We'll have to see how Rihanna does with her next single

Well the pendulum is also swinging... Most of those artists are perceived as 10+ years in the game and belonging to a different sound era. This has happened so much in the last 70 years.

Katy sounds like herself. "Swish Swish" and "Bon Apetit" are "fun" songs. They just didn't resonate well with her intended audience. And on top of that, audience for Pop music seems to be shrinking at the moment.

I also think Top 40 radio - traditionally at the vanguard when Pop eras flourish - is recoiling a little. They really are hanging on to the "Shape of You"s and "Havana"s a lot longer. Per Sean Ross' recent podcast, Most CHRs are limited now to only 20 currents, meaning that anything below the top 25 at POP is not really 'getting out there' as a mass appeal force. Cyclically pop should be strong again in about 4 years.

I agree, Bobby Brown is definitely remembered. Much more so than Roxette. Unfortunately, he will be remembered more remembered by many for what he did outside of music, rather than his music.

It'd be interesting to do a comparison of different years to see when the biggest shifts were. When I get some time (and remember to), I might make some venn diagrams comparing year-over-year artists to see at what point consecutive years have the least overlap.

^Yeah. But that song was #4 in Digital Song Sales, which explains how it managed to be top 10.

I've also wondered about which years were occupied the most by "legendary" artists, and which years were occupied most by smaller artists.

Impressed with Perfect's longevity especially considering how ballads are not streaming power. I wonder if Never Be The Same can hit the top 10 eventually

As for the talk of the older pop artists not being that relevant anymore well it really is just a different era now. They had their time. I would argue that some of them tried to "update" their music but still didn't click because it just doesn't fit. I don't think it's really that bad if some artists stick to what they do best. Chasing for hits or what's hot to the young demo will not work for everyone and could even hurt your reputation if you fail miserably to drastically change your style. So might as well cater to your strengths especially when you are at certain point of your career. Luckily, most of them already made a big name for themselves and has a catalog of hits so they can live off on touring.
I'm not saying they should not try evolving their music but one must know if it's a natural fit.

^ Exactly, Katy needs to start making fun pop music again and Gaga needs to start being interesting again. The fun, the interesting, the "bizarre" parts are not what's lacking. Sometimes it has nothing to do with the quality of the music itself, but simply ageism or the fact that people are tired of these stars because they've been around so long and it's a very rigid, cyclical thing where their time is up and the industry and public moves on to the next. Sometimes no matter how good a record somebody puts out is, it will be overlooked simply because their stars have burned out.

But c'mon, is Bobby Brown more famous today for having one or two hit albums and being in a mildly-successful R&B group from 30-35 years ago, or for having been Whitney Houston's husband?

It's close to the actual release, so it's not that helpful, but...

I feel like we're not going to get the Hot 100 for at least another 3 hours.
Anybody else notice that a bunch of Hot 100 URLs seem to redirect to the current Hot 100 (Apr 21) instead of the correct date in the URL?

Regarding the biggest shifts in eras, it's funny - you rarely see the shift in the beginning. It's generally only clear with the hindsight of a few years. (It is not as obvious as a "Hey! The Beatles are here! Hey! Disco 'died' last month!")
I wonder when this current shift started… When the EDM sound started dying and the Katy / Gaga coalition stumbled in 2014…?
