J. Cole's 'KOD' Set for No. 1 on Billboard 200 Chart With 2018's Biggest Debut

J. Cole is set for his fifth No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart with his latest studio effort, KOD. Industry forecasters suggest the set, which was released April 20 via Dreamville/Roc Nation/Interscope Records, could launch with 2018’s biggest week for an album -- as it may earn between 350,000 and 400,000 equivalent album units in the week ending April 26, powered by sizzling streaming activity.
The surprise set, which was only announced on April 16, is J. Cole’s fifth studio release. All four of his previous studio sets reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200.


The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The top 10 of the May 5-dated Billboard 200 chart (where J. Cole will likely debut at No. 1) is scheduled to be revealed on Billboard’s websites on Sunday, April 29.

If KOD starts as expected, it would surpass Justin Timberlake’s Man of the Woods for the biggest week of 2018. Woods debuted at No. 1 with 293,000 units earned in the week ending Feb. 8, according to Nielsen Music. KOD would also log the biggest week for any album since Taylor Swift’s reputation bowed atop the list with 1.24 million units earned in the week ending Nov. 16, 2017.

Avicii’s True album is set to re-enter next week’s Billboard 20​0 chart (dated May 5), and jump straight into the top 40, following the DJ/producer/artist’s death on April 20. The former No. 5-peaking album, released in 2013, could earn over 20,000 equivalent album units in the U.S. in the week ending April 26, according to industry prognosticators. In the previous week (ending April 19), it earned about 1,000 units, according to Nielsen Music.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The top 10 of the May 5-dated Billboard 200 chart is scheduled to be revealed on Billboard’s websites on Sunday, April 29.


True features Avicii’s biggest hit single, “Wake Me Up!,” which reached No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 10​0 and ruled the

Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart for a whopping 26 weeks. The multi-format smash also hit No. 1 on the Dance/Mix Show Airplay, Pop Songs, Adult Pop Songs and Adult Alternative Songs radio airplay charts.
It’s likely that a number of Avicii’s songs, including “Wake Me Up!” and “Levels,” will impact various Billboard tallies next week, as fans remember the late artist by buying and streaming his music.

In related news, on the day of Avicii’s passing, April 20, on-demand audio and video U.S. streams of his songs grew 1,838 percent as compared to the previous day (25.3 million versus 1.3 million) according to Nielsen Music. On-demand audio streams increased 1,246 percent (rising to 9.3 million from 694,000) and on-demand video streams bolted 2,512 percent (up to 15.9 million from 609,000).

Avicii's top five most popular songs on April 20, in terms of total streams, were “Wake Me Up!”(7.9 million), “Levels” (4 million), “Hey Brother” (2.9 million), “Waiting for Love” (1.4 million) and “The Nights” (1.2 million).

The LP could land the third-biggest streaming week ever.

J. Cole’s new album, KOD, which is already on course for a No. 1 debut on the Billboard 200 chart, is also set to secure 2018’s biggest streaming week for an album.

According to industry forecasters, the effort could see its songs generate perhaps 320 million on-demand audio streams in the week ending April 26. That would give it not just the biggest week of 2018, but also the third-biggest week ever.

KOD would trail only the debut frames of Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN. (340.6 million on-demand audio streams of its tracks in the week ending April 20, 2017, according to Nielsen Music) and Drake’s More Life (384.8 million in the week ending March 30, 2017).

KOD is likely to start atop the Billboard 200 with, perhaps, according to prognosticators, between 375,000 to 385,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending April 26.

As previously reported, KOD is on track to surpass Justin Timberlake’s Man of the Woods for the biggest week of 2018. Woods debuted at No. 1 with 293,000 units earned in the week ending Feb. 8. Set logs biggest week of the year in overall units and third-largest streaming week ever.

J. Cole’s fifth studio album, KOD, roars in at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart with 2018’s biggest week for an album, as the set earned 397,000 equivalent album units in the week ending April 26, according to Nielsen Music. It also notches the largest streaming week of the year, and the third-largest streaming week ever.

KOD is J. Cole’s fifth consecutive No. 1 on the Billboard 200, following his four previous studio sets: 4 Your Eyez Only (2016), 2014 Forest Hills Drive (2014), Born Sinner (2013), and Cole World: The Sideline Story (2011). Four of his five No. 1s opened in the top slot. Only Born Sinner missed a No. 1 debut, as it bowed at No. 2 and then moved to No. 1 in its third week on the list.

-- Biggest week of 2018 for an album: KOD launches with 397,000 equivalent album units earned. That surpasses 2018’s previous largest week, registered when Justin Timberlake’s Man of the Woods bowed at No. 1 with 293,000 units on the chart dated Feb. 17. KOD logs the biggest week for any album since Taylor Swift’s reputation started atop the tally dated Dec. 2, 2017 with 1.238 million units.

-- Biggest week for a hip-hop album in nearly a year: KOD’s debut of 397,000 units is the biggest week for a hip-hop album since Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN. opened at No. 1 with 603,000 units on the chart dated May 6, 2017 (reflecting the tracking week ending April 20).

-- Largest streaming week of 2018 for an album: Of KOD’s overall starting unit sum, 215,000 were in SEA units. That figure translates into 322.7 million on-demand audio streams of the album’s tracks in its opening week (each SEA units equals 1,500 on-demand audio streams). That’s by far the largest streaming week of 2018 for an album, surpassing the debut of Migos’ Culture II (149,000 SEA units; 224.6 million on-demand audio streams on the chart dated Feb. 10, reflecting the tracking week ending Feb. 1.)

-- Third-largest streaming week ever for an album: KOD’s tally of 322.7 million first-week on-demand audio streams for its tracks is the third-biggest streaming week for an album. The only larger weeks were posted by the debut frames of Lamar’s DAMN. (340.6 million on-demand audio streams of its tracks in the week ending April 20, 2017) and Drake’s More Life (384.8 million, week ending March 30, 2017). (Also impressive: KOD achieved its streaming sum with only a 12-song track list. DAMN. and More Life have 14 and 22 tracks, respectively.)

-- Second-largest sales week of 2018: With 174,000 in traditional album sales, KOD has the second-largest sales week of the year, trailing only the debut frame of Man of the Woods (242,000).

At No. 2 on the new Billboard 200, Cardi B’s former No. 1, Invasion of Privacy, moves up one spot in its third week on the list with 91,000 units (down 30 percent).

A Perfect Circle returns with its first studio album since 2004, and fourth top 10 set, as Eat the Elephant debuts at No. 3 with 68,000 units (of which 63,000 were in traditional album sales). The act was last on the list in 2013 with the hits compilation Three Sixty, which debuted and peaked at No. 38. Before that, the remix album Amotion hit No. 57 in late 2004.

A Perfect Circle’s last studio release, Emotive, opened and peaked at No. 2 in 2004 with 142,000 copies sold in its first week (the chart was purely sales-based in 2004). The rock act also hit the top 10 with its two earlier studio sets: Thirteenth Step (No. 2 in 2003) and Mer de Noms (No. 4 in 2000).

The Greatest Showman soundtrack continues to hold on strong in the top 10 for an 18th consecutive week, as the album is a non-mover at No. 4 (68,000 units; down 12 percent).

Jason Aldean’s Rearview Town falls from No. 1 to No. 5 in its second week, earning 38,000 units (down 79 percent)

XXXTENTACION’s ? moves up one position to No. 6 with 35,000 units (down 13 percent)

Migos’ Culture II climbs 8-7 with 33,000 units (down 8 percent)

The Weeknd’s My Dear Melancholy dips 6-8 with nearly 33,000 units (down 26 percent) and

Black Panther: The Album is steady at No. 9 with 32,000 units (down 7 percent)

Closing out the top 10 is rock group Lord Huron with its first top 10 effort, Vide Noir. The set, which is the act’s third studio set, bows at No. 10 with 31,000 units earned (of which 28,000 were in traditional album sales). The band previously visited the chart with its first two sets, Strange Trails (No. 23 in 2015) and Lonesome Dreams (No. 179 in 2012).

With another 24,000 more fans buying his album, Jason Aldean remains at #1 for a second week (but it'd take a miracle for him to hold that slot next week with Keith Urban set to bow with Grafitti U). Aldean's latest, Rearview Town has sold nearly 187,000 copies in two weeks. No small feat in this streaming age. Brothers Osborne's sophomore album Port Saint Joe debuts with nearly 19,000 sold (over 22,000 sales plus streaming to land at #15 on Billboard Top 200; Aldean sits at #5 after debuting at #1 there last week). At #3 is rural rap artist Upchurch. He continues to put out the albums at a fast pace and remains up there with The Lacs, Colt Ford and Smo as big sellers in the country subgenre. He moved nearly 12,000 Creeker albums last week. John Prine's The Tree Of Forgiveness debuted last week to over 52,000 albums sold and this week the iconic singer/songwriter sits at #4 with 7,700 more fans taking home his first all-new collection in 13 years. There are now nearly 61,000 copies of the album going around. Old Crow Medicine Show's Volunteer debuts at #5 with 6,500 copies sold.

Chris Stapleton has three of the #6-#10 selections with both From A Room album volumes and Traveller and is joined by Kenny Chesney (at #6) with his Live From No Shoes Nation double album enjoying robust sales again with sales now at 416k to date. Kacey Musgraves is the other artist in the second half of the Top 10 with her latest album, Golden Hour sitting at #9 with over 60,000 copies sold to date (including vinyl, CD and digital). Stapleton's albums have collectively sold over 3,000,000 copies to date.

Ashley Monroe and Joshua Hedley lead the debuts on the lower section of the chart with Monroe just missing the Top 10 with Sparrow. Hedley's Mr. Jukebox somehow was counted twice on this chart (likely the digital/CD and Vinyl edition). We combined the two for the sake of our chart which has him sitting at#17 with sales of 2,200 for his debut on Third Man Records. Other notables include Darius Rucker, Caroline Jones, Ashley McBryde, Walker Hayes, Reba, Scotty McCreery, Jon Pardi, Chris Young and Shania Twain, among others.

J. Cole's First-Week 'KOD' Numbers Prove His Stardom Is Secure as an Albums Artist

For the fifth time in five tries, J. Cole has debuted atop the Billboard 200 albums chart with his new LP. The recent semi-surprise release KOD enters the listing at No. 1 with 397,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending April 26 according to Nielsen Music, more than four times the total for the No. 2 set, Cardi B's formerly chart-topping Invasion of Privacy.

The figures are resounding: It's the best first-week numbers posted by any artist in 2018, more than for any album since Taylor Swift's Reputation started with over a million units in Dec. 2017, and for any hip-hop release since Kendrick Lamar's DAMN. debuted with 603,000 units the prior May. Less eye-popping but equally meaningful is the breakdown of those KOD units: He opens with 215,000 in streaming equivalent album (SEA) units, which is the third-highest tally in history -- but also with 174,000 in traditional album sales, second only to Justin Timberlake's Man of the Woods among 2018 albums.

Viewed in big-picture terms, that split reflects a rare ability of Cole's: To appeal in equal parts to younger, new-school fans (more likely to flock to streaming services) and veteran, older-school audiences (who traditionally are still responsible for the majority of direct sales). For reference, Timberlake's 2018-best number of 242,000 sold for Man of the Woods came with just 37,000 in SEA units, while a more obviously contemporary chart-topper like XXXTentacion's ? debuted with 106,000 in SEA but only 20,000 in straight sales. It's increasingly uncommon for an artist to post such a big overall first-week number where one of their traditional sales or streaming totals doesn't end up dwarfing the other, let alone being nearly split down the middle.

That's where J. Cole is at in 2018, though: He's a star with a uniquely wide-ranging and loyal fanbase, one that doesn't appear to be particularly contingent on him producing radio hits or even staying particularly visible between albums.

Consider that Cole's numbers for KOD are actually down somewhat from the impressive first week of his fourth album, 4 Your Eyez Only, which earned 492,000 units in its first frame in Dec. 2016. But it's still easily the year's biggest debut, and it comes with an even more pronounced impact on the same week's accompanying Billboard Hot 100 songs chart. (Eyez debuted all 10 of its tracks on the tally, including one in the top ten with the No. 7 debut of "Deja Vu"; KOD also debuts all 12 of its tracks on this week's chart, including a stunning three top tens -- "ATM," No. 6; "Kevin's Heart," No. 8; and "KOD," No. 10.)

It's a particularly impressive showing, because J. Cole has been far from a fixture in the pop mainstream since Eyez' release. Though Eyez did debut all 10 of its tracks on the Hot 100 in its first week, none of the songs climbed to a higher peak in the subsequent weeks -- and only one, "Deja Vu," graced the top 20 of the Hip-Hop/R&B Airplay chart, hitting No. 4 on in April 2017. Meanwhile, Cole has only made a handful of relatively low-profile featured appearances (mostly on deep cuts like Jeezy's "American Dream" and Miguel's "Come Through and Chill") in between the two albums, and has been at best a irregular presence on social media.

Yet despite his mainstream and crossover presence dwindling (he hasn't even touched the Pop Songs chart since 2013), Cole's popularity remains unwavering. He's hardly the first rapper to have his superstardom become reliably and almost entirely detached from his pop visibility, but the others who have -- figures like JAY-Z, Kanye West and Drake -- are among the biggest names in genre history, with a decade or two of major hits already to their credit. For Cole to join their ranks with only a handful of widely known crossover hits -- and never even coming within striking distance of a Hot 100 No. 1 -- seems somewhat jarring.

But hip-hop is in a state right now, having supplanted rock as the most dominant music in the popular sphere, where the genre can reliably spawn best-selling artists who are predominantly known for their albums, not their singles. Classic rock acts like Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin were regular presences at the top of the Billboard 200 chart throughout the '70s despite their singles only sporadically gracing Top 40 radio. Their albums would go on to sell in the tens of millions even without crossover hits, and their songs are among the genre's most familiar generations later, regardless of their initial Hot 100 peaks (or lacks thereof).

Rap has gone through periods of spawning similar breakout artists -- in the late '90s, Nas, DMX and JAY-Z all became superstars long before their Hot 100 peaks properly reflected it -- but even those guys were reliant on MTV and hip-hop radio in a way an artist like Cole simply isn't. His fanbase is entrenched at this point, and it's hard to imagine he'll need any assistance from conventional hit singles to sustain it for the foreseeable future. And it wouldn't be shocking if 20 years from now, cuts from his catalog that never dominated radio in their own time are better remembered from many of those unavoidable on the charts today.
