"Must be within the top 100 on at least 2 metrics" would reduce the impact. Some "album bomb" songs would still chart if they did well enough on digital sales but I'd presume things like intros and skits would not make it, at least. And I doubt that there would be any case of a "true" single being hurt by this.

Yeah, good discussion going on this week about the Hot 100 and album bombs and streaming, etc.

I think it's important to remember that the Hot 100 SINGLES chart became the Hot 100 SONGS chart for a reason(s) - it was a conscious decision. I don't think the impact of streaming and the "album bomb" was figured in at the time, so maybe changes will be made in the future as the industry continues to morph.  But, as of right now, it's not a singles chart. It's a songs chart, for one week at a time only. Chart runs aren't the tidy things they once were.  We're seeing changes and the effects of them, and for some of us, it's big, but not the first major change to witness.

Avicii's 'Wake Me Up!' Returns to Top 40 of Billboard Hot 100

In the first full tracking week after Avicii's death April 20, the late EDM star's biggest Billboard chart hit, "Wake Me Up!," re-enters the Billboard Hot 100 chart (dated May 5) at No. 34.

The song earned 16.4 million U.S. streams, surging by 718 percent, and sold 25,000 downloads, bounding by 1,965 percent, in the week ending April 26, according to Nielsen Music, helping the track re-enter the Streaming Songs chart at No. 34 and Digital Song Sales at No. 7.

The track also logged 8 million radio audience impressions in the week ending April 29.

"Wake" rose to No. 4 on the Hot 100 in October 2013, marking Avicii's only top 10, and second entry on the chart. He made his Hot 100 debut in December 2011 with "Levels," which peaked at No. 60 in February 2012. His other three Hot 100 entries: "You Make Me" (No. 85, 2013), "Hey Brother" (No. 16, 2014) and "The Days" (No. 78, 2014).

Meanwhile, Avicii's debut studio album True re-enters the Billboard 200 at No. 22 and the Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart at No. 1 with 17,000 equivalent album units (up 1,244 percent) in the week ending April 29. The set, which houses "Wake," "Make" and "Brother," debuted and peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 in October 2013.

Concurrently, 12 Avicii titles infuse the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart. "Wake" places the highest at No. 2.

You can always look for a couple cases that might be disadvantaged from a certain rule change, but that's not a reason to not implement the change, and you have to consider the big picture and what would benefit most songs overall. An important point is that NO RULE CAN EVER BE PERFECT, and while a song like Dame Tu Cosita might suffer under a supposed rule requiring multiple metric activity, it might help dozens more.

Another change that might help would be some kind of requirement that songs that are only popular on one metric, such as streaming, show some level of sustained interest over time, such as accumulating enough points over a 4 week rolling average. This would prevent the issue of first week album bombs (which really reflect first week interest in the album as a whole and not individual tracks). Whether it's official "singles" or just "album tracks," the Hot 100 is of course supposed to focus on the popularity of specific songs, and a rule like this could very well allow songs like Dame Tu Cosita to chart if they truly showed sustained interest over time.

And therein lies our fundamental difference of opinion. I want the charts to reflect the truth of its time frame as much as possible. The current UK charts and pre-00s Hot 100 charts have taught me that the instant a practice is preferred through rules, things will go wrong. Wanting to "benefit" songs in a way that doesn't reflect raw data is just wrong to me.

A weekly chart covers a 7 day period - not sustained interest over time

The songs in the "album bombs" are still being streamed - tied to an album or not. Some songs even within an album get streamed more than others - which would make them more popular than the others.

Probably. Interestingly, Billboard avoided addressing the issue altogether in the article just published and didn't even mention it had chart for 53 weeks previously.

What would Ariana's debut have to do with it? New singles debut every week. I could maybe see the J Cole thing (though I doubt it), but including Ariana's song makes no sense.

The track debuts at No. 81 and reaches the Hot Latin Songs top five.

Panamanian producer El Chombo (real name: Sebastian Clark), 48, earns his first entry on the Billboard Hot 100 chart (dated May 5), as his viral hit "Dame Tu Cosita" debuts at No. 81.

"Dame Tu Cosita," which translates to "give me your thingy," arrives with 10.4 million U.S. streams (up 26 percent) and 1,000 downloads sold in the tracking week ending April 26, according to Nielsen Music.

The novelty hit concurrently rises 6-5 on the Hot Latin Songs chart, while El Chombo jumps 35-28 on Billboard's Emerging Artists ranking.

The song's profile has been boosted by a viral meme on Musical.ly dubbed the Dame Tu Cosita Challenge, in which people lip-sync the tune and re-enact the dance in its official music video, which presents an animated green alien dancing.

As of May 1, the clip has rocketed to 227 million global views on YouTube since its posting on April 5.
