I expected more based on the title but it turned into a snooze fest First of all, those are fighting words. I mean, that melody! Secondly, did you listen to the dance remix? If so, what did you think?

If you listen to her material chronologically, LI is a real revelation, probably her most emotive performance up to that point

This song was only mediocre but it’s my 13 so I wanted it out. Glad it is.

Perfect ranking! This is fine exactly where it is.

I think I ranked this slightly higher to offset the plebs with zero taste. Looking In is a masterpiece. It’s haunting. It’s honest. It’s emotive. It’s transcendent.

Looking back it amazes me that this was even included on the album. Seems like a pretty stunning indictment of her relationship with Tommy and how unhappy he was generally.

Meh, "Looking In" is a melodramatic take on a personal subject. She’d exercise new, more exciting penstrokes over the next two years.

I think LI can be taken in a more general sense as a song about being in the public eye, whereas Slipping Away is more direct.

I didn't know that was the fan theory re: Slipping Away. I think the fact that Long Ago treads similar ground lyrically is why it was left off, tbh. It's the superior song, so they went with the right one.

I didn't know that was the fan theory re: Slipping Away. I think the fact that Long Ago treads similar ground lyrically is why it was left off, tbh. It's the superior song, so they went with the right one. I don’t know how common a theory it is, but it’s one I’ve seen more than a handful of times. In a sense “Always Be My Baby” and “Forever” cover the same territory, too, so I’m not convinced that would be the reason either. My guess is Sony wanted a more “pop” album overall, so there was only so much room for the more R&B tracks. So, it probably came down to “Long Ago” or something versus “Slipping Away” in a stylistic sense.

I agree on Long Ago and thought the same thing when I first heard it. I think Forever is just a more general love song subject wise.
To be fair, her first song after getting married was Dreamlover where she was asking to be taken away, so if they were super hawkish on the subject matter that wouldn't have come out either.

This song was the one that had me thinking the most when I was ranking. It's gorgeous, subdued and haunting.
But inevitably I always rank based on songs I re-visit the most, seek out the most and the others just had more replay value for me.

Well, and she covered failing relationship song “Without You” on the album and released it as a single, and an album cut like “Just to Hold You Once Again” is a break-up song. Slipping Away is a bit more indicting than the Forever/Long Ago/Just To Hold You Once Again type songs in her body of work, IMO. The latter all have a sort of passive vibe that idealizes the object of affection - In Long Ago for example she says "But you still haunt me and take me back to yesterday" - whereas Slipping Away basically lays blame at the other person's feet for letting everything fall apart despite Mariah doing her best to hold it together and is kind of 'over it' ("it's all a big charade and a fruitless game we play"). I think there was speculation that Everything Fades Away got left off Music Box for a similar reason. It wouldn't have been the only sad song on MB, but it would have been the most biting one; "Don't you know that love is gone, it's too late" is definitely a contrast to "I can't LIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIVE IF LIVING IS WITHOUT YOU" ( so dramatically needy, lol). I think that (maybe too) detailed analysis along with knowing that Tommy was mentally abusive and manipulative is why some fans believe those songs were excluded. I wouldn't be surprised if those nuances mattered to him. That all said, I agree with you that Slipping Away's omission probably stemmed from its sound, with it not being 'pop' enough for the label's liking. I'd also add that lyrically it doesn't cater to the 'daydream' theme as readily as Long Ago does. EFA sounds plenty pop enough for me, but Columbia might have felt the r&b coming on too strong there too, compared to what did make Music Box. ------------- Back to Looking In, this wouldn't be the first time Mariah ended an album on an unexpectedly Debbie-downer note (Emotions/The Wind), but at the same time it is necessary and fitting, as it reveals her life is literally a fantasy, an illusion to anyone trying to look in on it (while she herself is on the outside looking in at her fantasy of happiness). It's the back-to-earth moment that comes at the end of every dream. I wonder if she had to fight for its inclusion much though, b/c I could see a table of execs listening to it and thinking it doesn't belong.

Great post, and I love how you read the thematic heft of the album the same way I do. "Looking In" is most definitely a perfect album closer in the way you mention, and also in how Mariah recognizes that false illusion people have is a fantasy she herself has for her life but can't reach; the 2nd verse being in third person is telling, especially because Mariah acknowledges "she" dreams - so again, a fantasy world - of all she can never be. So, not only is the perception people have of her a daydream, but the real Mariah has the same daydream. Brilliant. And, yeah, "Long Ago" reflects that better than "Slipping Away." "Slipping Away" actually is too real for the album, but not too real for Tommy, but too real for Mariah. And to that end it could actually be seen as Mariah singing about her dream of a life slipping away more than it's about a person slipping away. I do think it could then work if it were placed right before "Looking In," as it would then signify Mariah waking up from the dream of her life, and then "Looking In" would be her reflection on it. :ETA: I'll add that in no way do I think Mariah and team put this much conscious thought into the album and its tracks. I do think a lot of this was a subconscious reality, but there also was certainly some conscious thought about Mariah's life not being the fairy tale people thought. To that end I think that general concept was intentional, and then the layers of Mariah's life led to some subconscious connections as well.

"Looking In" is so beautiful!!!!! No regrets being the highest ranker for it I can definitely see people finding it boring, but as somebody who appreciates musicianship and artistry this one had me perched from beginning to end!
