jenglisbe, Whitney's "Thinking" was eligible for the Hot 100. Any single back then was, unless it was strictly a 12" vinyl. (and even that rule bent depending on the chart manager)
It didn't chart because - as 85la suggested - the Hot 100 in 1985 had no radio input from r&b stations (It was deemed too small an audience - and there were no real rhythmic stations back then,) Also pure r&b singles did not sell well. Clive at Arista clearly sent TAY just to Urban radio to firm up Whitney's r&b base in the face of pop fare like How Will I Know and Greatest Love of All (and perceived backlash)

Radio may be why his songs linger, but they do have tremendous sales success. Shape of you and perfect are two of the three 2017 songs that have sold 2million+ |
