Pulse Rankdown: 2003 Year-End Alternative Chart (WINNER!)

1) PM me (that's Red ) the top 100 Alternative songs of 2003, all ranked to your preference (e.g. if you like a song the most, rank it the highest and vice versa).
2) The points a song has will be totalled up based on an inverse point system. So if you rank a song #100, it gets 1 point, and if you rank a song #1, it gets 100 points. All the points from the participants will be totalled up. I feel like most of you should know how this works by now.
3) The due date for submissions is Sunday, June 17th at 10pm US Eastern. There will be no extensions, so make sure to send in early and often.
4) ALL songs must be ranked.
5) To avoid posting with duplicate lines when you PM me, click BBCode below the text box before pasting your list.
6) All your rankings will be posted when I reveal a song in this thread.
7) You are allowed to make changes to your list, as long as you do so before the deadline.
8) For reference, here are the top 100 Alternative songs of 2003. The top 40 is from Billboard, the other 60, of course, is compiled by Daryl the Beryl .

Well, it's been three rankdown years since I last hosted one of these...I figured the time was right to host another one again.

The moment that the topic of hosting 2003 Alt came up, I knew I had to host this rankdown. More than any other year-end rock rankdown, this is the one that means the most to me personally. This particular year was when I was most in-tune with the radio, especially Alternative radio, and I have a huge soft spot for the majority of this rankdown. The rest of the songs...well...we'll get to those when the time comes.

I'm absolutely excited beyond words to begin hosting this rankdown, and I hope that the ride will be as fun and as engaging for all of you as I expect it to be for me. The year is 2003, the year-end chart is Alternative. Let's do this.

Oh, and peacebone, I would have also accepted "Founder of Rankdowns Anonymous".

I see some good stuff on here. I don't think I like it as much overall compared to 2004, but this might be my second favorite Alt Rankdown ever so far. I already likely see my #100 as that was easy to spot.

My submission is in. A slightly better year than '04 overall; didn't expect that going in (and especially after shuffle mostly gave me the s**tty songs first). Little meatier at the top and less utter guff at the bottom. Though, the battle for my #100 was tougher than last year

A very mixed bag of a year. There wasn't enough room in my top 10 for all the songs I absolutely adore, nor was there enough room in the bottom 10 for all the horses**t.

We're typing in Georgia font, and you know what that means...I WAIT FOR BALLOT UPDATES...LIKE A STONE! It's time for the first installment of the Red-approved rock chart rankdown ballot update! It's been a while since I've posted one of these in this kind of a setting, but I think I'm up to the task of providing the ballot updates for all of you during the course of the submission process. peacebone , singingrulebritannia , and The Bode Blend (Moose) are the first posters to get their very own ballot update, and, though it's early, interesting things are happening already...

Some stats to consider:
- Currently, just three songs have been in every top ten. One of those, however, is the current #1. The current #1 is over 20 points clear of the current #2. #2 is struggling much more with the songs right below it, just a single point ahead of #3.
- The gap between #6 and #10 currently stands at a meager four points. The gap between #10 and #11 is more significant, though not by that much: Eight points separate the two songs jockeying for the last top ten spot.
- A couple of songs early on are not doing as well as I thought they would. One song that I thought would be a contender for the top ten (or at least the top twenty) is currently barely in the top 50.
- Seven songs have been hanging out in the bottom ten for the entire time early on, though one is pretty close to escaping the bottom ten currently. The bottom four are among those who have been in every bottom ten. #100 isn't too far away from #99, eleven points behind #99.
- The top 25 are the only songs to have crossed 300 points so far. Meanwhile, all but 20 songs have crossed the 100 point plateau, and all but eight have 50 points.
- Oh yes, I did not forget to do this, either...WE HAVE STANDARD DEVIATION SIGN! The current highest standard deviation can be found in the middle of the rankdown, at #56, while the second-highest is a few spots below it at #61. The lowest, meanwhile, is not hard to spot...it's all the way down at the bottom of the rankdown, at #100. The second-lowest is also in the bottom ten and can be found at #92. I won't normally mention the third-lowest here in these standard deviation updates, but this one is significant: The third-lowest SD is our current #1.
- And did you really think that I would do a ballot update without Pulse's Favorite Part of the Ballot Update...


In these early stages, there are no shortage of ties...as evidenced by you guys forcing my hand and making me SOUND THE ALARM! We have an early top ten tie at #6 (and it's kind of a funny one, too). We also have ties at #11, #18, #29, #59, #72, #77, and #93.

Just wondering but since the chart for this is BDS based what's the time period used? Is it the usual December-November, January-December or the weird and kinda lame January-November one all the official publications used?

Also I might submit for this! I didn't listen to rock radio at all this year but I can appreciate all the good stuff we have here. Classics, crap, comebacks and panda jizz.

It's time for the second installment of the Red-approved rock chart rankdown ballot update! This time around, we have rankings from Cody, dm2081, and rgreen0625. How did these three posters shape the latest overall ranking? Well, you know I'm going to tell you, right?

Some stats to consider:
- From three songs in the last update, we are down to just two songs that have spent every ranking in the top ten...and one is fairly close to falling out of the top ten. The current #1 has a somewhat significant lead at this stage of the rankdown, holding a nearly 30 point lead over the current #2. a former #1 holder in its own right. #2 is only seven points clear of #3, though #3 is nearly 20 points clear of #4. It's still early, but it looks like a couple of early contenders are already starting to make themselves known.
- Just four points separate #6 from #8, and just seven separate #6 from #9. The current gap between #10 and #11 is also seven points.
- The song that I mentioned in the previous update that was surprising me quite a bit with its poor performance started to make some traction in this ballot update, so maybe things will not be as bleak as I thought for that song. There is another song, however, that is just barely clinging on to the top 40 that I thought might do better, too...
- Only four songs have been in every bottom ten now, down from seven in the previous update. One of the previous bottom four soared out of the bottom ten, but the other three songs from that previous bottom four are still hanging out in the bottom four. The other constant bottom ten song is this close to escaping the bottom.
- One song, in particular, fell hard into the bottom five and broke up the bottom four "lovefest". That song is sticking around now at #98.
- #99 and #100 are the only songs to have yet to cross the 100 point plateau. #99 is six points ahead of #100, however, so the "race to the bottom" is anyone's game. #99 is also over a full ranking behind #90 already, let alone #100, so these two songs may be sticking around at the very bottom for a while...
- STANDARD DEVIATION UPDATE? STANDARD DEVIATION UPDATE! Our current highest SD can be found at #74, while the second-highest is not far away at #70. As for the lowest, the current lowest is our middling #99. The second-lowest is much higher, however, and can be found all the way up at #13. The third-lowest is worth mentioning, too: It's our current #100.
- And yes, of course, there could not be a ballot update without Pulse's Favorite Part of the Ballot Update...


Incredibly, for the second update in a row, we have to SOUND THE ALARM! We have yet another top ten tie, this time at #7. We also have ties at #19, #26, #82, and #87.

Okay, so a situation has arisen. I mentioned in my 2010s rankdown thread that there's a chance that I may be going out sometime between the reveal of 2010s and the reveal of this rankdown. As it turns out, there are now some complications to that fallback plan. It's now looking like I'll be going out of town at the end of the month, which would directly coincide with the reveal of the top 40 here. As such, I have decided that I am going to move the deadline forward a week to the previous Sunday, June 17th. The only other option, at least to me, was to keep the deadline as it is, but that puts me at risk of missing a couple of days due to the whole "being out of town" thing. This might inconvenience some of you, and I do apologize, if that is the case, but I can't think of another solution right now. Real life happens sometimes for me, and I can't really help that.

So, what this means is that we are now...

ELEVEN DAYS UNTIL THE DEADLINE.

We're typing in Georgia font, and there's a good chance that you know what that means...I'LL SEND THE BALLOT UPDATE BELOW! It's time for the third installment of the Red-approved rock chart rankdown B-B-B-B-BALLOT UPDATE! Three new posters are about to enter the Ballot Update Dungeon: Daryl the Beryl, Pale Shelter, and @humanshazam. How have these three posters impacted the rankdown? I think we need to find out...

Some stats to consider:
- Two songs continue to hang out in the top ten after every ranking. For the first time, however, neither song is in the top five.
- The #1 position has not changed since the last update. In fact, #1's lead is starting to grow, now holding a 50+ point lead over #2. The gap is similarly big between the songs at #2 and #3, with #2 holding a 40 point lead over #3.
- Symmetry surrounds the rest of the top ten gaps: #6 is six points ahead of #7, #7 is six points ahead of #8, #8 is two points ahead of #9, and #9...yes...is two points ahead of #10.
- The current gap between #10 and #11 is significant: 30+ points.
- The song that I was referring to in the last update that was struggling continues to struggle, barely holding on to the bottom end of the top 40...
- The same four songs continue to inhabit the bottom ten, though, again, one of the songs is close to escaping. The bottom two continue to be among those that can't escape the deep end of the rankdown.
- An interesting "battle" is brewing at spots #96-#98, as those three songs are all separated by just three points.
- #99 and #100 STILL have yet to crack the 100 point threshold. #99 is now twelve points clear of #100, though one ranking can still change everything in terms of how the bottom two is ranked. In terms of whether or not these songs can escape the bottom ten, however...the less said about that, the better.
- IT'S SOME KIND OF A PULSE STANDARD DEVIATION UPDATE, THAT'S WHAT IT IS! The two highest standard deviations belong to the same two songs as the last ballot update, albeit in different positions (well, one of them is in a different position, anyway): #80 and #70. As for the lowest, the current lowest continues to be the song at #99. The second-lowest is the song currently at #15. Of note, the songs currently in the top two and the songs sitting at #98 and #100 also have pretty low standard deviations, at the moment.
- And what would a ballot update be without Pulse's Favorite Part of the Ballot Update...


You're not going to believe this, but...for the third straight update, we must SOUND THE ALARM! The top ten tie is even higher than last time, as it can be found all the way up at #3. We also have ties at deep breath #13, #26, #34, #36, #39, #42, #56, #68, and #75.

lol I actually dig both of those songs. I never liked anything else from Bowling for Soup, but "Girl All the Bad Guys Want" and "1985" were always favorites of mine.

I used to be a big Bowling For Soup fan about 15 years ago. As I've gotten older, sure my fandom has gone downhill a lot as their lyrics don't pertain to someone in their mid-30's. I almost couldn't make it through their newest album that came out I want to say two years ago. I still find some of their songs catchy as hell and fun to listen to brighten your day.
