Kanye West's 'Ye' Set for No. 1 Debut on Billboard 200 Albums Chart

“Ye” is on track to earn West his eighth No. 1 on the chart.

Kanye West’s new album, Ye, is heading for a No. 1 debut on the Billboard 200 chart next week, according to industry forecasters. Prognosticators suggest his new effort, which was released via G.O.O.D. Music/Def Jam Recordings on June 1, may launch with over 175,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending June 7. If Ye bows atop the tally, it will score West his eighth No. 1.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The top 10 of the June 16-dated Billboard 200 chart (where West will likely start at No. 1) is scheduled to be revealed on Billboard’s websites on Sunday, June 10.

Ye is West’s eighth solo effort, and ninth overall, counting his collaborative set with JAY-Z, Watch the Throne. All of West’s previous titles debuted at No. 1, save for his first album, The College Dropout, which bowed and peaked at No. 2 in 2004.

West last topped the chart in 2016 with his previous release, The Life of deleted.

Assuming West bows at No. 1 with Ye, he will tie Eminem for the second-most No. 1s by a hip-hop act. Only JAY-Z, with a total of 14 leaders, has more among hip-hop artists.

Also on track for a high debut next week: Ghost’s Prequelle could give the rock band its second top 10 effort.

Kanye West Earns Eighth No. 1 Album on Billboard 200 Chart With 'Ye'

He's earned all eight consecutively, tying Eminem and The Beatles for the longest streak of No. 1s.

Kanye West lands his eighth No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart, as his latest studio effort, Ye, bows atop the list.

The set -- which was released on June 1 via G.O.O.D. Music/Def Jam Recordings -- earned 208,000 equivalent album units in the week ending June 7, according to Nielsen Music, and is the fifth-largest week for an album in 2018. Of Ye’s starting sum, 85,000 were in traditional album sales.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new June 16-dated chart (where West debuts at No. 1) will be posted in full on Billboard's websites on Tuesday, June 12.

Let’s review some of the notable statistics associated with Ye’s No. 1 arrival:

Kanye West’s Eighth No. 1 Album: West lands his eighth No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart with Ye. He ties Eminem for the second-most No. 1 albums among hip-hop acts in the history of the chart. Only JAY-Z is ahead of them, as he owns 14 chart-toppers. (Among all acts, The Beatles have the most No. 1s, with 19.)

Record-Tying Eight No. 1s in a Row: West has earned all eight of his No. 1s consecutively. Every single one of West’s chart entries, except for his first album, 2004's The College Dropout, have debuted at No. 1. (The College Dropout debuted and peaked at No. 2.) He matches Eminem (2000-2018, a still-active streak) and The Beatles (1965-68) as the only acts to tally eight straight No. 1 albums. Eminem also matches West in terms of eight consecutive No. 1 debuts. (The Beatles’ stretch of eight No. 1s in a row in the '60s did not include any titles that debuted at No. 1.)

Fifth-Biggest Week of 2018: As Ye starts with 208,000 equivalent album units, it logs the fifth-biggest week for an album this year. The only larger frames were earned by the debut weeks of Post Malone’s beerbongs & bentleys (461,000), J. Cole’s KOD (397,000), Justin Timberlake’s Man of the Woods (293,000) and Cardi B’s Invasion of Privacy (255,000 units).

Seventh-Largest Streaming Debut Week Ever: Of Ye’s first week units, 120,000 were SEA units. That sum equates to 180.1 million on-demand audio streams for the set’s seven songs during the tracking week (as each SEA units equals 1,500 on-demand audio streams). Ye’s streaming launch is the seventh-biggest debut streaming week for an album. That’s a pretty notable feat, considering Ye only has seven songs. Thus, each tune, on average, garnered 25.7 million on-demand audio streams. The only album to tally a larger per-track streaming average was J. Cole’s KOD earlier this year. During its opening frame, the 12-song album earned 322.7 million on-demand audio streams, resulting in a 26.9 million per-track average.
At No. 2 on the new Billboard 200, Post Malone’s former No. 1, beerbongs & bentleys, is a non-mover with 99,000 units (down 5 percent).

Coming in at No. 3 is rock band Ghost with its highest-charting album, and third top 10, Prequelle. The set launches with 66,000 units, of which 61,000 were in traditional album sales — the act’s best sales week ever. (The album’s first week benefits from a concert ticket/album sale redemption offer in association with the band’s spring U.S. theater tour, as well as a pair of arena dates later this year.)
Ghost previously visited the top 10 with a pair of No. 6-peaking efforts: Popestar (EP) in 2016 and Meliora in 2015.

Country singer Luke Combs nabs a new chart high with his This One’s for You album, as the set zooms from No. 39 to No. 4, thanks to a deluxe reissue of the album on June 1. The set, bolstered by five new songs, garnered 55,000 units (up 314 percent). The album blows past its previous best week, logged when it bowed at No. 5 with 43,000 units on the June 24, 2017-dated tally.

Cardi B’s Invasion of Privacy is steady at No. 5 on the new Billboard 200 (49,000 units; up 3 percent), Juice WRLD’s Goodbye & Good Riddance continues to climb, as it rises 8-6 (42,000 units; though down 3 percent), and The Greatest Showman soundtrack ascends 9-7 (just under 42,000 units; down 3 percent).

Shawn Mendes’ self-titled album falls from No. 1 to No. 8 in its second week (39,000 units; down 78 percent), Lil Baby’s Harder Than Ever slips 7-9 (37,000 units; down 18 percent) and Jason Aldean’s Rearview Town vaults 27-10 (34,000 units; up 117 percent). The latter set, like Ghost’s Prequelle, is goosed by sales generated from a ticket/album sale redemption offer.

I'm so damn happy for Kanye! After Eminem and JT had below expectations debuts, I realized how my childhood idols were falling in overall chart performance and that made me feel so bad. Now, with Kanye overperforming (I didn't expect 180M on-demand streams when the album was released) it's like there's still hope to see 2000s legends going strong in 2018/2019.

With Sales over 257,000 full albums to date, Jason Aldean remains at #1 this week with Rearview Town. The superstar’s album has sat at #1 for the majority of his seven week run, save for Keith Urban’s debut with Graffiti U five weeks ago. Urban has remained at #2 for the past three weeks and has scanned over 178,000 units to date. At #3 is the Gold-certified album from Kane Brown. The album has scanned nearly 400,000 copies, a downright remarkable achievement in a market where albums rarely sell full copies anymore when you’re a debuting artist.. At #4 and #5 this week is Chris Stapleton with Traveller and From A Room Vol. 2. The former has sold nearly 2.3 million copies while the latter is approaching 400,000. Stapleton’s From A Room Vol 1 is also at #7 with nearly 800,000 scanned.

Sitting at #6 this week is Willie Nelson’s latest album for Sony/Legacy, Last Man Standing. The album has sold nearly 47,000 to date. Luke Bryan’s What Makes You Country sits at #8 with sales now at 293k to date while #9 we find fellow superstar Kenny Chesney with his double disc live album, Live In No Shoes Nation. He’s scanned 441,000 copies of the album so far so it’s a big achievement for the superstar (though it does still have concert ticket redeems affiliated with it’s yo-yo like sales position week after week). At #10 is Kacey Musgraves with Golden Hour. The album has sold over 78,000 to date, not bad considering it’s not a mainstream country radio chart record.

Billboard 200 Chart Moves: 'The Greatest Showman' Is 2018's First Million-Selling Album in U.S.

On the latest Billboard 200 albums chart (dated June 16), Kanye West racked up his eighth No. 1 with the debut of ye. The set earned 208,000 equivalent album units in the week ending June 7, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 85,000 were in traditional album sales.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the week’s most popular albums based on their overall consumption. That overall unit figure combines pure album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA).

Now, let’s take a closer look at some of the action on the rest of the Billboard 200:

— Soundtrack, The Greatest Showman – No. 9 — The soundtrack to The Greatest Showman becomes the first album to sell a million copies in 2018 in the U.S., as the set sold another 26,000 copies in the week ending June 7. Its sales in 2018 now stand at 1.001 million. The title’s overall sales -- as it was released in December of 2017 -- total 1.081 million.

2018’s second-biggest-selling album is Justin Timberlake’s Man of the Woods, with 399,000 copies sold, followed by Jason Aldean’s Rearview Town, with 282,000.

Through the same point a year ago (week ending June 8, 2017), no album had sold 1 million in 2017. The industry had to wait until the week ending Nov. 16, when Taylor Swift’s reputation. swooped in, selling 1.2 million copies in its first week.

2017 would end with only two million-selling albums: reputation. (with 1.9 million sold that year) and Ed Sheeran’s ÷ (Divide) with 1.1 million.

The Greatest Showman is the first soundtrack to sell a million copies in a calendar year since 2014, when the Frozen soundtrack sold a mighty 3.5 million copies (of its overall 4.2 million total).

The Greatest Showman also recently made news as the first soundtrack released in four years to sell a million copies.

— Maroon 5, Red Pill Blues – No. 11 — The set vaults 38-11 with 31,000 units (up 128 percent) thanks to interest in its single “Girls Like You.” On Top Album Sales, the record rises 56-30 with 4,000 sold (up 77 percent) — its best sales week in 2018.

— Father John Misty, God’s Favorite Customer – No. 18 — Father John Misty’s new God’s Favorite Customer starts at No. 18 with 22,000 equivalent album units. The majority of that sum (19,000) was in traditional album sales (enabling the set’s bow at No. 6 on Top Album Sales).

Notably, the title also debuts atop the Vinyl Albums chart with 11,000 vinyl LPs sold — the fifth largest sales week for a vinyl album in 2018. The only others to yield larger vinyl weeks in 2018

have been the debut frames of Jack White’s Boarding House Reach (27,000), Arctic Monkeys’ Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino (16,000), Justin Timberlake’s Man of the Woods (15,000) and Fall Out Boy’s MANIA (13,000).

— Lauv, i met you when i was 18. (the playlist) – No. 50 — Singer-songwriter Lauv hits the Billboard 200 with his first full-length release as the set starts with 11,000 equivalent album units. Streams largely power the debut, thanks to its breakout hit, “I Like Me Better.” The song collected 4.4 million on-demand audio streams during the tracking week, while another two cuts from the album landed over 1 million streams apiece: “Enemies” and “Chasing Fire.”

— Roger Daltrey, As Long As I Have You – No. 194 — The Who front man Roger Daltrey inks his first chart ink since 1992, as his new effort, As Long As I Have You, debuts at No. 194 (5,000 units, nearly all from album sales).

The mostly covers collection is Daltrey’s first chart ink since 1992, when he spent four weeks on the list courtesy of a featured billing on The Chieftains’ An Irish Evening: Live at the Grand Opera House, Belfast. Daltrey’s last proper solo album to chart was 1985’s Under a Raging Moon, which peaked at No. 42 (Nov. 23, 1985).
