5 Seconds of Summer Earn Third No. 1 Album on Billboard 200 Chart With 'Youngblood' Plus: The Carters bow at No. 2, Christina Aguilera & Nas debut & XXXTentacion's "?" and "17" return to top 10.
In a week where there’s no shortage of action at the top of the Billboard 200 albums chart, 5 Seconds of Summer debut at No. 1 with the band’s third full-length studio album, Youngblood. The set arrives atop the tally with 142,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending June 21, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 117,000 were in traditional album sales.Youngblood was released on June 15 via One Mode/Capitol Records. 5 Seconds of Summer finish ahead of the surprise-release album from The Carters (the husband-and-wife team of JAY-Z and Beyoncé), new entries from Nas and Christina Aguilera, as well as two albums that return to the top 10 by late rapper/singer XXXTentacion. The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new June 30-dated chart (where 5 Seconds of Summer debut at No. 1) will be posted in full on Billboard's websites on Tuesday, June 26. Industry forecasters expected a race for No. 1 between Youngblood and The Carters’ Everything Is Love (No. 2 with 123,000 units), though ultimately Youngblood pulled out ahead in the last couple days of the tracking week thanks to a surge in album sales. The band whipped its fan base into a frenzy via social media, pointing out how it was in contention for No. 1, and its fans responded by snapping up albums. (Even Niall Horan got in on the action, tweeting how the album “has got to be the number 1 record this week.”) Of Youngblood’s overall unit bow of 142,000, 117,000 were in album sales, 3,000 were in TEA units and 23,000 were in SEA units. Youngblood gives 5 Seconds of Summer their third straight chart-topper, following the Australian band’s first two full-length studio sets: 2015’s Sounds Good Feels Good (which debuted with 192,000 units, with 179,000 in album sales) and its 2014 self-titled album (259,000 in album sales, before the chart transitioned to a consumption units-ranked list). Further, 5 Seconds of Summer becomes the first Australian act with three No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200. 5 Seconds of Summer also extend their record as the only band (not vocal group) to debut at No. 1 with their first three full-length studio albums; it was already the first band to bow atop the list with its first two full-length studio sets. In addition to the three full-length studio efforts, the band has also charted with a live album (LIVESOS, No. 13 in 2015) and an introductory EP (She Looks So Perfect, No. 2 in 2014). Youngblood bows at No. 1 from a full seven days of tracking activity. It was available across all streaming services, and for sale on CD, digital download, vinyl LP and cassette. The album was also assisted by sales generated by merchandise/album bundles sold via the group’s official site, as well as a concert ticket/album sale redemption offer with its 2018 U.S. tour. Youngblood was announced on April 9, and slated for a June 22 release. By June 1, that release date was pushed up to June 15. Youngblood was introduced by the single “Want You Back,” which bowed on Feb. 22. The cut reached No. 25 on the Pop Songs airplay chart, and was followed by the album's title track, which has so-far climbed to No. 31 (on the most-recently-compiled chart, dated June 23). As for Everything Is Love, it arrives in the runner-up slot with 123,000 units -- of which 70,000 were in traditional album sales, 4,000 in TEA units, and 49,000 in SEA units. The album was surprise-released mid-day on June 16, and was initially only available to stream and purchase (as a digital album) through Tidal. By the morning of June 18, the set was widely available through subscription tiers on audio streaming services and to purchase through other digital retailers, like iTunes. It has not been announced if the album will be issued on CD or any other physical configuration. Beyoncé and JAY-Z’s previous solo albums -- 2016's Lemonade and 2017's 4:44, respectively -- both opened at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. And, like Everything Is Love, those albums had a unique release rollout, making it difficult to compare their debuts to that of Everything Is Love. Back on the new Billboard 200 chart, after the death of XXXTentacion on June 18, his previous No. 1, ? (which debuted atop the March 31-dated Billboard 200), vaults 24-3 with 94,000 units (up 397 percent). His previous top 10, the No. 2-peaking 17, in 2017, also rises, climbing 60-7 with 55,000 units (up 446 percent).Post Malone sees his former No. 1, beerbongs & bentleys, holding steady at No. 4 with 82,000 units (down 10 percent).Nas scores his 12th top 10 album, as Nasir starts at No. 5 with 77,000 units (49,000 in traditional album sales). The new effort is his first studio set since 2012’s No. 1-debuting Life Is Good.Christina Aguilera, like Nas, is also back in the top 10 after a long absence. Her new album, Liberation, bows at No. 6 with 68,000 units (62,000 in album sales), granting the pop diva her seventh top 10 effort. She last debuted on the tally with 2012’s Lotus, which debuted and peaked at No. 7.Rounding out the new top 10: Juice WRLD’s Goodbye & Good Riddance moves 7-8 (just over 43,000 units, down less than 1 percent), Cardi B’s Invasion of Privacy slips 6-9 (43,000 units, down 6 percent) and Jason Aldean’s Rearview Town bounds 23-10 (38,000 units, up 99 percent). The latter is boosted by sales generated from a concert ticket/album sale redemption offer with Aldean’s current tour.

Of note for Aguilera: the No. 3 sales ranking of Liberation tops that of previous effort Lotus.

Even though I had already started a thread for this chart, since this one seems to be the active one, I'll post this here:
6/24/2018 by Keith Caulfield
In the wake of XXXTentacion’s death on June 18, two of his albums return to the top 10 on the Billboard 200 chart.
The rapper/singer’s former No. 1, ? (which debuted atop the March 31-dated Billboard 200), vaults 24-3 with 94,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending June 21 (up 397 percent), according to Nielsen Music. His previous top 10, the No. 2-peaking 17, in 2017, also rises, climbing 60-7 with 55,000 units (up 446 percent).
The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new June 30-dated chart (where ? and 17 are in the top 10) will be posted in full on Billboard's websites on Tuesday, June 26.
? was the most streamed album of the week, as its songs generated a combined 116.3 million on-demand audio streams (up from 26 million a week earlier). 17 was the fourth-most streamed set, with 72.5 million on-demand audio streams (up from 14.5 million).
XXXTentacion made his Billboard chart debut in February 2017 and collected 16 hits on the Hot 100 and three entries on the Billboard 200 during his lifetime. However, his chart success was concurrent with consistent legal trouble. At the time of his death, he was awaiting trial on more than a dozen felony charges and allegations of domestic violence against his then-pregnant girlfriend.

Just something I’ve noticed: Why do black artists who generally produce hip-hop music, always have such high streaming and low album purchasing compared to white artists (generally pop and country).

^I think it is a matter of demographics, not necessarily only a matter of race. I would argue that the listening public for the former is generally younger and more inclined to stream music regardless of whether it is paid or not. On the latter public, I would also include rock and alternative as genres which fit the description, and would argue that it might be the same public that generally still listens to radio, which is probably the way it discovers new music.

Xtina's team could have picked any other week... It's still an OK start for the album, although it will probably crash hard next week.

Younger than 5SOS's fans? How is this not related to race?

It also has to do with other demographics than just race. That's my point. The younger you are the more likely you are to get your music via streaming rather than buying or listening to the radio. Emphasis on likely.

Emphasis on likely. I mean, sure. But even white hip-hop artists often pale in streaming compared to black ones. Unless you're Post Malone I guess.

^I was referring to the demographics of the listeners rather than the artists. But to some extent the race of the artist does seem to affect. But I'd argue that the style of the music involved is more telling. I think the explain well why few female artists except for Cardi B seem to be doing consistently well on all streaming platforms. Girls Like You only reached the top 10 of Streaming Songs thanks to the Cardi B remix. I Like It, Boo'd Up, Be Careful and No Tears Left to Cry are the most recent songs including women to reach that tier. I guess Ariana is a female outlier.

Emphasis on likely. Define "young". How old is Juice WRLD's audience, 11? So Selena Gomez is not big on streaming because her fans are old? I don't think age alone explains this.

My thoughts (strictly anecdotal)
The music industry still seems to see Hip Hop as disposable....so it throws most of its weight behind "singles" artists while somewhat ignoring album sellers who make more "authentic/organic" music.....I think they see guys like Cole and Kendrick as outliers, when in fact that's the direction that Hip Hop has been heading for at least 5 years now. You can say the same for R&B.....more content driven than singles driven. At least that's been the vibe within the respective genres. Guys like Vince Staple or Joey Badass sell tens of thousands more albums than the Uzi Verts of the world but get little to no airplay, even at Urban.
Record execs have never truly understood the pulse of "Urban" culture....they see it as a monolithic with no real substance and market everything within it to the lowest of the low denominators....moreso than any other genre it seems like.

Billboard 200 Chart Moves: Buddy Guy's 'Alive' Logs Biggest Sales Week for a Blues Album in Nearly a Year 6/28/2018 by Keith Caulfield
On the latest Billboard 200 albums chart (dated June 30), 5 Seconds of Summer notched its third No. 1 with the debut of Youngblood atop the list. The set earned 142,000 equivalent album units in the week ending June 21, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 117,000 were in traditional album sales.
The Billboard 200 chart ranks the week’s most popular albums based on their overall consumption. That overall unit figure combines pure album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). Now, let’s take a closer look at some of the action on the rest of the Billboard 200:
— XXXTentacion, Revenge – No. 30 — As the late rapper/singer returns to the top 10 with his two studio efforts (? And 17, at Nos. 3 and 7, respectively), his mixtape Revenge jumps back onto the list, and at a new peak. Revenge — which was his first of three charting sets — reaches a new high as it re-enters the list at No. 30 (16,000 units; up 386 percent). It previously topped out at No. 44 (June 10, 2017). Collectively for the week ending June 21, XXXTentacion’s albums tallied a 401 percent increase in equivalent album units earned (rising to 175,000 from 35,000). His song catalog claimed 226 million on-demand audio streams, up 357 percent.
— Rebelution, Free Rein – No. 41 — Rebelution’s Free Reign launches with 13,000 units at No. 41, and also starts at No. 1 on the Reggae Albums chart (10,000 copies sold). With their eighth No. 1 on Reggae Albums, the group breaks out of a tie with Matisyahu for the second-most No. 1s in the 24-year history of the list. Bob Marley leads all acts, with 18 chart-toppers.
— Buddy Guy, The Blues Is Alive and Well – No. 69 — Blues legend Buddy Guy clocks his 13th entry on the Billboard 200, as his new studio set, The Blues Is Alive and Well, bows at No. 69 (10,000 units). But, over on the Blues Albums chart, the set arrives at No. 1, granting Guy his sixth leader on the tally.
The 81-year-old first led the 22-year-old Blues Albums chart in 2001 with Sweet Tea. The seven-time Grammy Award winner also collected leaders with Skin Deep (2008), Living Proof (2010), Rhythm & Blues (2013) and Born to Play Guitar (2015).
Notably, Guy’s new set logs the largest sales week (9,000 in traditional album sales) for a blues album in nearly a year. The last blues effort to sell more in a week was the Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band’s Lay It On Down, which sold 13,000 when it arrived at No. 1 on the Blues Albums chart dated Aug. 26, 2017.
— Chromeo, Head Over Heels – No. 91 — It’s the third charting set for the duo but the fourth go-round on the chart for the title “Head Over Heels.” Previously, Paula Abdul (1995), Alex Bugnon (1990) and Poco (1975) all hit the list with Head Over Heels albums.
— Eagles, Greatest Hits: Volume 2 – No. 168 — The 1982 album returns to the chart for the first time in over two years thanks in part to sale pricing in the iTunes Store. The 10-song collection boasts seven top 40-charting hits on the Billboard Hot 100.
